2020 Subaru Legacy Review - The Best AWD Value?

  • I review the all-new 2020 Subaru Legacy in its Limited trim. See below for time stamps! With prices starting at just $23,645, it undercuts its competition by a good margin. Add to that a very high-tech and comfortable interior and the value gets better. But with a comfort-focused, less sporty driving experience than its competitors and annoying EyeSight driver assist systems, the Legacy has some flaws in my mind. Some may enjoy its relaxed driving setup, but few will like the overreaching safety systems. What do you think of the new 2020 Subaru Legacy Limited?

    FYI: I later discovered the lane centering can be turned off independently of the lane departure warning via a steering wheel button, therefore eliminating the steering wheel nudge without displaying the orange warning in the gauge cluster.

    You made a great point that so many people online seem to forget or just don't realize is that we as car enthusiasts are a huge minority when it comes to the automotive industry, most car buyers just don't care if a car is fast, fun or cool. We are the minority.

    I was considering this car and possibly the Outback. After watching this great detailed review and Savage Geese's Outback review I think there are too many deal breakers with these 2020 models. The weird cvt behavior, the auto start/stop, the driving nannies, the yellow warning in the dash, the big screen with no dedicated buttons for climate and seat heat etc.

      Randy M The eyesight integration and CVT are what pushed me away from Subaru as well when I was shopping around. I ended up buying a Golf Sportwagen instead and have loved it so far. AWD, turbocharged, manual or dual clutch transmission options, loads of space, no annoying lane keep/auto start-stop and fully defeatable traction control. If you like the outback, the GSW/Alltrack are worth a look if there’s any local to you. Unfortunately they’ll be all gone soon

    Thanks for sharing another good one Matt. I am 37 so I actually have a varied taste when it comes to certain things, some old school and simple I like and others more edgy and fun, it all depends. Subaru definitely does play it "SAFE" when it comes to design, more evolution than revolution aside from jumping out with all those safety tech features. I have sat in both the Legacy and the 2020 Outback and I do like the interior design and quality, aside from a few quirks that you and Beth pointed out, but they are not deal breakers. I am like you in that I wouldn't want all the Nannies, some of it is okay like the distracted driving monitor, but it just seems to take it overboard. I am glad that you can shut most of it off. Hopefully they do make an STI Legacy in the near future, personally I would love a Crosstrek STI (which I know is a lifted Impreza not a Legacy).

    Matt what do you think about the stop start set up honestly when I drove one I don’t think it belongs with the flat engine it just doesn’t feel right what you come to a stop in the engine shut off and try to start back up, I totally agree with you on all the driver assist recently my parents just got a new 2020 Acura MDX and my poor father was getting so overwhelmed by all the tech I kept trying to help them out over Christmas trying to help him learn all the telematics different functions and the first thing we did was turn off the steering assist to keep you back in the lane ! When I bought my 13 legacy eyesight was an option I think it was at that time was $1000 option I didn’t get it though I’m that type a driver that enjoys driving doesn’t try to get distracted a lot like you are Matt!

    Haven't seen it on the channel, but do you have any plans on testing a Legacy XT? Would be curious if some of your issues (handling, accelerator, etc.) would be addressed in the XT vs. the NA.

    • @BradMaiden1999
      @BradMaiden1999 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually own a 2021 Subaru Legacy touring XT. Much faster 0-60 time but I am more impressed with the 30-80 time. As far as handling, i would say it’s about the same. I had a 2020 Subaru Legacy rental for about a week and a half.

  • @Blue6Romeo
    @Blue6Romeo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Honestly, I would have preferred the 2020 exterior but the 2019 interior. I like the simple and straightforward look of the previous generation on the inside, and the fact that the screen is much more reasonable in terms of size and the HVAC has real controls. The safety features of this current generation is ridiculous and really is going to make less competent drivers. At least in my '19, I can turn off every single safety system and it doesn't do anything without me enabling it; your comment about it trying to steer for you in every situation is very unnerving. And facial scanning to keep your eyes on the road? Damn, big brother much?
    I bought my Subaru for it's AWD and the fact that it was made in the US, which were two very important factors for me. And I tried to get a very basic model because I didn't want all these 'features'. I'm very glad I didn't hold out for this new series and I think I dodged quite the bullet.

  • @MrMomo0529
    @MrMomo0529 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s called lane centering assist and does not work until you turn the eyesight on. The eyesight monitors the road whether it’s on or off but the lane centering assist only works when you cuts it on. Also in normal daily driving you cannot tell it a CVT but when you step on the throttle you will know which most people won’t do.

  • @Eeaotc02
    @Eeaotc02 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I completely agree with you on the CVT on the Legacy. It's unpredictable of how it's going to respond. I had a loaner car from dealership and they gave me the Legacy. It was a wonderful car to drive on long drives however when it comes to handling/cornering, yep I agree with you as well. It's just not enjoyable to drive for sporty terms. Even the steering feel was just meh. It made me miss my 2017 Impreza a lot. I enjoy taking more Impreza on corners a lot because it handles well and the steering feel is pretty good when I'm turning. Not WRX level but good feedback.
    The CVT on my car is also better despite it's not a speed demon. The CVT ratios on my car drop immediately when I press the pedal (depending how much throttle output I want to put out). My car has 65,000mi so I guess it's already knows how to respond because how I trained it? I don't know. The Legacy, when I press the pedal, the CVT ratios aren't predictable. It tends to have a mind of its own and I didn't like that. I love the Legacy and but the lack of handling and steering feel is a huge drawback from me. I think the transmission behavior can be trained depending on the owner but for me it felt like a different transmission than the Impreza CVT.

      @Blue6Romeo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know if you were fishing for a reply but here's one if you're interested. The Eyesight system in my opinion works about 80% of the time. Sometimes it'll yell at me that there's an obstacle in the way when the road is clear, and other times something does jump out in front of me and it doesn't say a word. But when it works, it does do a decent job. And it can all be disabled so at least there's that. I personally lowered the volume on it's warnings and I barely notice them anymore.

    And besides Land Rover Subaru is the car that won against the rugged Australian Outback, hints the name.

    I feel like Subaru is becoming Nannybaru, and they're getting out of their lane for some reason. They're going to lose the formula that got them where they are. I simply would not own one of these Legacies having seen this video. Eyesight was all the rage when it came out but it seems to be too much nowadays. I hope they don't wreck the WRX with all this stuff.

    Toyota and Honda have gone to far to the extreme end of design, and it doesn't work. Subaru is 'trying' to keep it subtle, but it also doesn't work. Subaru needs to get a good designer to really flush out a great, timeless, subtle design. Here's a hot tip Subaru: Design the exterior without taillights or headlights. Get the body to look really good without these elements - ESPECIALLY the middle of the car. Then go back in and do the lights. So many cars have ornate, over the top headlights and tailights that are stuck on the most boring of bodies...

    the title should be "my opinion on the CVT and acceleration of the Subaru legacy, with a little of everything else while i continue to complain about the CVT". seriously you just droned on about it for over half the video. I personally prefer a smooth shift, so the CVT worked for me. u gave SO little to everything els about the car outside the CVT and safety systems, that this is turned into 1 of the worst car reviews iv ever seen. we did not even see the back seats or trunk, maybe about 10 seconds of hood time, no mention of headspace, or all the buttons to the screen and climate controls. no mention of the spare tire availability, no view of the backup camera situation. all of this missing content for a 26-minute video. iv watched half a dozen other video reviews that covered twice as much content in half the time while covering many important and beneficial points that this vehicle seems to have. it doesn't seem to be the best in anything and it doesn't need to be at its very low price. but it does do everything very well for its price bracket, even beating many higher-priced cars in allot of these areas.
