For those who wonder about the ethics of the situation, let me say that this one squirrel came back no less than 8 times (so far). If it was so awful, she'd leave it alone. From what I can tell, they love it - it's like an amusement park that pays food.

@Brian Landers Whatever grease I tried (years ago) had to be constantly re-applied or it lost lubricity but a delight to watch at first.
I don't know why, but seeing squirrels having a hard time makes me lol.
they are too successful at foraging and breeding, they should be given a hard time at every opportunity

I had a squirrel who was able to leap from the base of the tree onto the squirrel feeder. He wrapped himself around the feeder like a doughnut and his mouth ended up where one of the feeding holes were. Amazing. Pissed me off though.

LOL This would be a better product if the doors to the seeds closed when the rotation and squirrel chucking began.
Excellent modification idea. Also, I'd like to add some very hot pepper sauce to the pole and spinner ring to discourage them.
eastportland That doesn’t work-I tried using a mix of cooking spray and hot pepper flakes applied to the sunflower seeds for about a year. Didn’t even faze the squirrels; they just kept right on robbing my bird feeder. I finally had to drop $40 on one of those fancy feeders with the spring-loaded doors that slam shut when anything heavier than a bird lands on the roof or perches. Haven’t had any trouble since-with the bird feeder, at least. They’re STILL digging in my flower pots!
@@dragondancer1814 i just build a howl nest in my house, no more squirrels.
The ones my family has are of a better quality than this and don't spin because the perches are separated into 4 equal parts....and yet it still doesn't prevent the friggin black bears from destroying the shepards claws we hang the feeders on...our last one got bent completely by a bear while we were asleep, and worse yet it was when we taken the feeders in for the summer/spring when the bears are more active so there was no reason for the bear to go near the damn thing.
Yes, I have a birdfeeder that closes when a squirrel steps up, and it’s metal, so I have hopes on this one. Dome tops didn’t work. They were relentless.
Looks like those squirrels know what they are doing.... got the seeds on the ground where they can eat them without the merry-go-around !! WTF!! I bet that feeder cost $50 bucks Hahahaha

I own one, broken now, and I'll just replace it with one that closes access to the seed when a squirrel is on it. Plus, the need to charge it is a pain. Should have solar charging built in.

I have squirrel proof feeders and it's always fun to see them try and get a meal. If they get some seeds, it's okay. I love my squirrels too. They are so fun to watch.

Best squirrel video I've seen, and no one can say "how mean you are to the poor squirrels!" They do the same thing on my brand new feeder, and get it spinning as much as they can. Then it's banquet time and feasting on the ground, and they keep coming back for more. I think they like this crazy stuff, like riding on the rides at the state fair! As you said: "at least they have to work for it!"
And I even feed the squirrels on the ground... does that make a bit of difference? NO!

The yard was suddenly full of beefcake squirrels and they attracted more squirrels and inadvertently changed squirrel dynamics forever.

I bought this "squirrel proof" feeder. Only thing i didnt realize, any squirrel smart enough would figure out that he can shake all of the seeds out onto the ground just by landing hard on the feeder, and he gets a free ride too. Maybe I will put nail spikes under the feeder and hope the squirrels land on them.

It's an ingenious birdfeeder, but an improvement would include a line of centrifugal force-activated sliding doors that would shut off the seed-feed openings. The current design just encourages Rocky to keep going on the ride to enjoy the subsequent ground-level buffet.

the fact that a Squirrel is semi smart its easy for it to learn that it can get the feeder to drop plenty of food to eat by repeating the cycle.

It's very entertaining but a lot of seeds are spilled as the squirrel twirls. It would be worth the ride for the squirrel if they figured that out. Great feeder regardless. 👍👍👍

Haha! Nice video - I just bought one of these after having lots of my bird feed go to the squirrels and not to the birds. So far I've only seen the squirrels go on the feeder once after having it up for 2 days. It's saved me probably 1.5 lbs of seed already.
The designers should devise some doors that close on the seed ports when the spinner motor starts then seed won’t get spilled on the ground as a free snack for other squirrels while they go for a ride!!!

The squirrel has succeeded and spinning enough feed out of the feeder to feed him and his friends. I used to have one of those feeders and figured it was just basically another toy for the squirrels.

biggest problem is the insane amount of seed that falls out as the squirrel is playing with it. It's worth it for them to get flung to then pick the seeds up off the ground.

Yes, some seed gets dropped but the great thing is that the squirrels are very smart....after getting flung into the ground a few times, they give up and leave it alone. The only time they bother ours now is when it is full of fresh seed....then, they are blinded by greed and forget what it did to them....then, we get few days of fun watching them get flung around again!
He's spilled so many seeds on his little ride that he doesn't even need to get into the feeder

This bird feeder worked for my squirrel problem. The squirrels here rarely ever get on it once they've been flung. The most they do is sit on the top of the thing and look longingly at the seeds.
The longer he held on, the more seed spilled on the ground! 😁

from what I've read, you close up one or two of the holes, so there are still 2, like on either side of each other, to lessen the spillage, but it is so fun to watch! those pesky fuzzbuckets
The amount of seed that's scattered on the ground every time a squirrel does a twirl makes this self-defeating. All they have to do is fall off and then they can eat all they want off the ground. It may be amusing to watch them twirl and fall, but it still scares all the birds away and is a massive seed-waster.
