I loved watching this video. I've been fascinated by watching Squirrels since I was a little kid. Some years ago I lived on a big estate with tall trees. One day I was sitting in the yard and I heard a Hawk cry and a Squirrel's loud noise at the same time. I looked up to see a red tail Hawk flying away with a Squirrel in its talons that it had just grabbed from an Ash tree branch about 70' feet up. The Squirrel was screaming and wriggling around madly. The Squirrel finally fell from the Hawk's grip and landed on my lawn. I thought that it was dead but after about a minute the little guy stood up and slowly looked around 360 degrees. He saw me and looked at me for a while then did another faster 360 look around and then he gazed at me again for a while. Then he scurried off into the bushes. I felt sorry for the little guy so a left him a big pile of shelled walnuts and a bowl of water at the edge of my patio. When I came back home the nuts were all gone. Then later, I noticed that a Squirrel would be waiting for me at the end of my driveway when I came home from work and it would race alongside of my car as I drove down the driveway and at the end where I parked there was a maple tree and he would beat me to the tree and run up the tree real fast just ahead so I could see him. He did that day after day and my driveway was 400' long so that was no little sprint for the Squirrel. Then later I was out in the yard picking Wine Cap mushrooms from a wood chip bed to cook and I noticed a squirrel watching me. I brought the mushrooms inside and then went back out and then found a Russula mushroom in the grass. I picked it and tossed it toward the Squirrel since I knew that they could eat them. I walked more and found another Russula and the Squirrel had followed me and it was even closer so I tossed the next one to him as well. On another day there were more Russulas sprouting but no Squirrel in sight so I gathered a bunch of them and left them in a pile at the edge of my patio where I had previously left the walnuts. And the next time I looked they were all gone. But now here is the funniest part of this whole story. My primary entrance to my home was by a wooden staircase that led from my driveway up to a second floor deck. One day I was leaving to go to work and as I was walking down the stairs and I felt something drop onto my shoulder. I looked down and there was a piece of a Russula mushroom bouncing down the stairs. I looked up and there was a squirrel sitting on a branch right above me on that Maple tree at the end of my driveway. I thought "Oh what a coincidence". And then a few days later I was on my way to work again and going down the stairs and something bounced off of my head. I looked down to see another piece of a Russula mushroom again and I looked up to see the Squirrel on the branch again. I had a real good laugh and I realized that I had made a friend and that my friend was playing with me.
I recently raised 2 orphaned baby squirrels. I’d never really liked squirrels before, but these 2 little monsters changed my mind. They are very clever problem solvers, and very acrobatic. These have talons that would make Freddy Krueger jealous. I called my babies The Krugerettes, but they did adapt to my lack of fur and the scratches and cuts decreased. Those talons are their secret weapon when it comes to the amazing jumps and ability to climb just about anything. I now have to carry nuts with me whenever I go outside. The male will meet me at the car and demand a cuddle and a nut. The cuddle is negotiable, the nut is not. Good luck outsmarting them, and thanks for not hurting them.
Wow couple of them really went at it. Rolling all over the place fighting. It really amazes me how determined they are to get through these obstacles. You would think they would give up. The pole dancing squirrels are pretty amusing to watch.
Its all day every day lol...they really get annoyed when they can't get to the food....they usually figure it out...but not so far on this one :-) There you are w/ the pole dancing again! haha
Squirrels steal from my bird feeders, scare off the birds, and a big mess, so I quite putting out bird food. Squirrels steal from my chickens so I have to stand there while the chickens eat all they want and then I take their food bowls away. Crows get leftover table scraps, what they don't eat raccoons come by at night and clean up. I've seen possums, too. I don't mind the crows and possums, but squirrels can go elsewhere. Don't worry, they don't starve. Just over my back fence, my neighbor puts out peanuts on a regular timetable. I see them going along the top of the fence back and forth back and forth with nuts one way, empty the other.
I put cooking oil on my pole. I watched them go up……….and then slide down. It was hilarious! But it was a little expensive so back to the drawing board. I think those little thugs like a challenge.
Yea, I need help... 😂 I've got 6 squirrelies running around here, in the middle of the city burbs, they are quite entertaining... "King of the hill" gets crazy between six hungry fluffballs.
two years since your video....How long did it take the squirrels to get around it? I am really impressed! I have been trying to outsmart them, (but still love them) for about 40 years. I am 72. Even built them an entire circus in my yard with Copper pipes (when copper was afforadable) and hanging swings and teeter totters, and even a ferris wheel. That still didn't deter them from the bird feeders. The circus was a sweet diversion.
It's amazing how much time, effort, money and sweat a human will use, to prove to the world that they can outsmart a squirrel. Kind of rates up there like all of the equipment people buy to catch a fish.
We loved this, and your creativity. We're ordering slinkys today. We have a squirrel feeder 10 feet from the bird feeders, you'd think they would leave the bird feeders alone. We love watching the little furry creatures. Thank you for posting!
I used a 4 inch square PVC post from a big box store, big enough that they can’t bear huge it and shimmy up to the feeder, lasted for years until one tenacious squirrel decided to go all beaver on the bottom of the post and over a few days was able to damage the post enough that it fell over, never underestimate those little a- holes
I have two bird feeders about 5 feet apart sitting on small steel post in the ground. One feeder is compromised, as one or two of the squirrels can climb up on it. The other feeder’s pole is new, smooth and every so often I clean it and spray cooking oil on it. No squirrels on that feeder. I’m happy they are happy. I am a kind, generous and gentle man (mostly).
Great fun to watch their antics! I had pretty much solved the squirrel problem with a 30" piece of tin wrapped around my nine foot high 4X4 feeder pole and cutting back the nearby limbs they could jump from. But raccoons were much more challenging. I tried a number of things before finally installing an electric fence. It has worked for several years now. The squirrels pick up the sunflower seeds the birds drop and don't even try to climb the pole. The raccoons we used to see frequently don't even bother any more.
@@getin3949 I'm not surprised. The one I'm using for the bird pole is pretty mild, but some people want to install something that could stop a person's heart if they think they might be burglarized. Our property could easily be called the middle of nowhere. Our sixty acres is heavily wooded except for the two we keep mowed. When our grandchildren were small, we'd turn the fences off when they played outside. We have another more powerful fence around the carport where we park our pickup, and I've found dead toads, frogs, snakes, and crawdads on it. I'm never happy about it. In a two-month period several years ago, something ate the wiring to the truck's transmission twice, disabling it and costing several hundred dollars. We learned that others in the area had put electric fences, and ours has worked. The bird pole came later.
Oh, I remember these days. Of course, when you are trying to keep tree rats off your bird feeders, it's not funny at the time. However, I was never quite this industrious, so I found this video more entertaining than anything I have ever seen before. (^_^)

Obviously the squirrels quickly learn how to hug smaller diameter PVC and pull themselves up. I've found 4-in. diameter PVC to be fairly effective because squirrels can't get their arms around it, so to speak. With a standard metal rod feeder stuck in the ground, add a four- to five-foot length of the 4-in. PVC over it. On top of that I have also affixed a standard plastic squirrel baffle, and on top of that another foot or so of 4-in. PVC. The added piece on top helps keep the baffle flat which frustrates the occasional squirrel with sharp toes from getting around the baffle. My bigger problem is that deer find the tubes of birdseed at mouth height make for an easy cleanout.
Had a utility locate flag in our yard, drove the squirrel nutz. The flag includes 12 inch plastic wire with square yellow flag. The squirrel would reach up and bend over the flag to reach the flag then jump off so it flung upright. Squirrel would attack the flag from different sides. Watched that crazy squirrel play with the flag a good 5 minutes.
