I love watching these amazing creatures! I honestly think that given enough time and an average squirrel or two, there is no such thing as a "squirrel proof" bird feeder. Eventually the squirrel will win.
I can design one... But it's gonna cost plenty. 1) pick a location far from any jumping spot. 2) a twenty foot long, three inch diameter pole is erected... with three umbrella-shaped canopies (2 meters wide) positioned at five, ten, and fifteen foot levels 3) at the top will be the bird feeder. 4) to reload birdfeeder, the pole can be tilted up and down like the flagpole where Steve Rogers got the flag.
@@erichanastacio9695 I think the two 6ft canopies might turn some people away unless there's a way you could make them aesthetically pleasing and it seems it could easily get blown away considering the thin structure combined with the very large canopies. What about just a taller version of a bird feeder made out of a smooth material? The squirrel wouldn't be able to get a grip and the underside of the bath part on bird baths are typically sloped which would again prevent grip and act as a barrier

There's a whole set of woods back there for him to find some food so I don't know if I agree with you completely on that. Squirrels are a little s**** and I don't like them. I hear they make good eating though.
What a remarkable video!!!! Two slinkies, one small and one perhaps a half-inch larger diameter over the first one, both running all the way the bottom where the feeder is attached to the deck should work. with the present arrangement the squirrel has too much of a running start, and then his paws can step between the more tightly wrapped slinky. I guess the designer did not want to make it impossible for the squirrel! Of course, the additional strategy is to make the diameter of the first clear plastic food plate under the canopy even smaller. This entire contraption is ingenious!
Did you notice in his fall he tried to hang on the main plate were the food is... and by doing so he managed to get food on the ground...! bingo ! he managed anyway to solve the problem...but at a high price 🐿🐿🐿

To make the plastic hood slippery go to a music store and buy some Finger Ease spray. Spray on and wipe off - Mr Squirrel will slide off of the top every time.
The squirrel is hooking his back claw on the wire or the groove in the top of the dome, so I don’t think that would make a difference. Plus, I’d have to keep reapplying it everytime it rained. But, thanks I’ll keep it in mind!
The domes are the best squirrel defence. I've used them for years and never seen a squirrel get past one. The ones I use have a much more hemispherical dome that extends down further.
I once had a feeder hanging from a stand-alone pole, with a squirrel guard on the pole. The squirrels finally figured out that if they took a flying leap from a nearby bush. They could knock the whole feeder to the ground. Squirrels are pretty dumb, but very persistent.
I've had two complete feeders vanish; found one down the hill behind my property, at least 50 years away. The other was much larger, still haven't found that at all yet. I now use plastic-covered wire to tie the feeders to the hooks
Squirrels are so amazing and clever. I love watching them figure out things like this. I know you're only trying to keep it from eating your bird seed, but you're also providing incredible enrichment that helps them learn. The best part (to me) is that the other squirrels will watch and learn how the first one finally succeeds. We have a rope bridge from an oak tree to a mini-picnic table by our window and the first one was a little hesitant in crossing, but within weeks, they were running across it, leaping from mid-bridge to the tree. So clever! :)
Get rid of the bird ledge/shelf, that only makes it easier for the squirrel to hang on to. The birds are fine balancing on the tiny sticks, plus it teaches the smaller birds balancing skills.
But, the Cardinals and blue jays prefer sitting on something flat. Otherwise I would just only use the squirrel proof green feeder in the other videos.
