I have to wonder if those who claim feeling a difference in performance when installing an aftermarket intake are removing a dirty filter when they install the aftermarket intake.
Coming from 7 yrs in a 98.5 24v I cherish the relative quiet of my '07 5.9. Just a word of advice. Hearing loss is incremental. I'm 73 and do to loud noise have serious hearing loss. If I did put an aftermarket intake on mine I'd get the S&B. Removing the silencer simply allows a high pitch noise to emit. It's tough on the filter. Good job Justin. I love your videos.
I had S&B intakes on my 6.0L Super Duty and '97 12-valve Cummins- liked them on both. Solid product, easy to install, looked good, sounded good. Audio recording doesn't do the sound change justice, it's much more apparent in person. Your turbo will have a real nice distinct whistle that you can hear from in the cab with one of these intakes. I noticed exactly zero change in fuel mileage. Also, anyone that claims they can feel a ~5-10hp increase (at best) on a ~7,000-8,000lb truck is either a liar, has the placebo effect, or has the world's most sensitive butt.
Your last comment is fact. The difference is way too small to notice in every day driving, but that doesn’t make them any less fun to add for the noise!
Definitely worth it I love my S&B intake in my 2005 Cummins 👍🇺🇲 I do daily drive it and have mbrp resonator 4" turbo back and I think it sounds just right.
Try taking of the box for a filter interval, after that youll ditch it . The filter stay way cleaner as dust isnt forced into the filter once sucked into the box also sounds way better
Thanks for the good info on the fresh air intake I'm still on the fence on purchasing one. A question I have is in reference to your headlights, are they stock or after market? if so, a brand name please. Thx enjoyed your vid.
Ok so I dont have a diesel, but I do have the S&B kit on my 2013 Tahoe. It sounds great and the 5.3 in my Tahoe seems to pull harder in the top end. Sorry, for sharing feedback on a Gas Powered Truck!
Same here...Don’t feel bad at all.Have both: 06 Dodge Ram 5.9l and an 03 6.0 suburban. Weather gas or diesel we’re still trying to get the most bang for the buck. Glad it’s working out on your Tahoe. I have a banks on my 03 suburban and it has made a difference . Still debating whether to go Banks are S&B be on my diesel.
Been running a Banks cold air since 2007(0n a 2002 GMC 2500HD LB7)...personally, when doing an "enclosed", it's a horse apiece, with the most notable difference being $$$...
I've resisted doing this as well so will have to add something similar in the future! I have added a Banks intake that i found on CraigsList and found it to make only a slight difference in power but a big difference in throttle response but do your research if you are thinking of an intake elbow as they are not all created equal !!!
I have a 2017 Ram Cummins 6.7L 4x4 and I had a tune done to it by EZLynk and straight pipe, but the drone was very loud inside the cab of the truck that even the radio at high volume it was hard to listen to the radio, so thanks to my wife & neighbors, I had to put a cherry bonb muffler kind of a thing, now does your truck sound super loud with the straight pipe?
If you want my 2 cents they’re a nice addition, but in no way does the 2k price tag ever pan out in fuel savings or parts savings! That said, they’re a fun item to have and are WAY beefier than the stock units. They also reduce wear on the front driveline, and make a very slight improvement in fuel economy since they reduce drag on the front end.
The original owner of the truck put them on actually. They’re cool, but I’m not sure I’d pony up the cash for them on my own. I can definitely make a review video though!
Hey man! I enjoy your high quality videos and to the point dialogue. You convinced me to get this CAÍ that I had been on the fence about. I have another for you; which radio head unit are you running?
I've put CAI on the last like six vehicles, pretty much stock or bolt ons, but still noticed some in drivability. My question is; do you notice any throttle response like I usually have with mine?
Maybe my butt dyno lacks accuracy, but I noticed zero performance change. That’s a very platform specific thing though. Some vehicles will have a lot more to gain than others!
@@JustDiesels ok, I was wondering, cause I’m looking the same intake, with dry filter, for my 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 truck and I have an aftermarket exhaust, carven tr with 5” tips and wanted the intake make the exhaust sound a little louder! Thanks
I took the Ring out of my Turbo and I don't think it's any Louder...I think I'm going to put it back in....I have a 01 Dodge with a 4" Aftermarket Exhaust. It had a Half-assed muffler on it and I took that off and welded in another piece of 4" Pipe so it's all straight 4" now... I have a Edge Comp tuner...I have the Stock Air Box with a KN Air Filer...I bought This Truck New and it was loud then....I live in the country and get looks for being to loud and for Smoking to much.....I drove it into the City the other day and most people HATE IT.....I LOVE IT AND F THEM ELEC CAR MOFOS...
If you want the turbo to be a little louder you can take out the Silencer ring thats right in front of your turbo,it pretty simple to remove,a pick or a flat screw driver and pop of the snap ring.
No egt comparison? No boost difference? No IAT comparison? No DYNO #s? The difference would be more apparent with other mods. You should tell folks the difference on a stock truck is X but the difference on modded ( turbo, intake tube, exhaust size etc) is Y.
Yeah let me just bust out my driveway dyno and controlled lab really quick haha. IAT is impossible to compare outside of a lab, but I saw zero change in EGT or boost because the factory intake on these trucks flows just fine! I’d imagine there’s more to gain on a high HP truck, but on a mostly stock 5.9 truck like mine an air intake is pretty much entirely for sound.
@@JustDiesels ok cool smart ass response. Doesn’t your edge measure IAT? Lots of local dyno shops will let you run for less than $100 ...... doesn’t your edge do data logging? You ran the same road on back to back days I’d say the ambient air temps were prop with in 5-10 degrees on those back to back days. Not to hard to do a more in-depth before/after comparison. If you saw no change you could address that in the video. Or maybe you did and I missed it. Just a little constructive critique. Did you not ask for comments?
@@jason328d6 Dude...the difference a CAI alone makes on a stock truck is just increased turbo sound and looks... What you asked for is ridiculous and there are plenty of videos/articles that will deliver the info you asked for. Spoiler alert- they all say the same thing...the gains a CAI provides on a stock truck are extremely negligible. The difference a CAI makes on a modded truck would vary from truck to truck based on the mods each truck has and environmental conditions it's not even worth guessing. I can tell you though, horsepower wise, a CAI makes very little difference unless you're pushing crazy amounts of fuel and air. Guys have made WAY more than factory horsepower with a stock intake, lots of fuel and nitrous can overcome a lot. The factory intake isn't that restrictive.
@@JasonWaterfalls13 yea I get that. I’ve had a CAI on my 06 5.9 since 07. I’ve had it dynoed dozens of times with multitude of programmers, filters, nozzles, boost foolers, cp3 mods, injectors, cam, and turbos. I fully understand the difference a CAI can or can’t make. It’s not all about HP, some folks might want to see cooler egt, or higher boost based on change in air density. Not that a SB CAI would make that on a stock truck. I’ve seen an intake set up make a difference in spool up on my old WSB in my 04 with a quad I’ll programmer ( was brand new in 05, lol) I was simply saying he could have covered those things in his video. increased air flow helps sounds and drops temps....if you want power ya gotta burn more fuel....
Have you done any videos comparisons on intake horns?
@just diesels, i noticed you giving boost numbers in the 30’s. What mods did you use for that boost? Btw awesome channel. Subscribed!
Only thing different from stock engine wise is a Smarty Jr on eco, the intake, and a Diamond Eye Cat back exhaust!
Just put a K&N on my 06 with the 6 speed and my lord it sounds like a jet. Also which of the 3 generations is your favorite 1 2 or 3?
That's THE worst filter you can put on a diesel. Look up at the sun and see the pinholes letting light through. Dirt comes through those same holes.
Project Farm found the K&N to flow the best and clean air the worst. Chuck it.
