I tow with a 2001 dodge 5.9 4x4 2500 so3 tuned usually setting 3 or 5 trailer is only 7k pounds bumper pull love the 5.9 , we are retired so usually 63 mph . We live in Arizona
I'm a trucker, and if I tried doing 65-70 in Cali it wouldn't be long before I saw blue lights. 55 is the speed limit for anyone towing, including RV's, but somehow you folks seem to be golden as as the highway patrol is concerned. Haven't seen my first RV pulled over for speeding. Good on ya, and be safe.

I have found if you keep them Screaming and out of overdrive and the turbo spooled up they stay pretty cool pulling mountains . But I have melted down a few engines 😂 ...mainly due to getting bad fuel though .
What settings are you running? My 03 came with a smarty touch and I know nothing about mechanics. Have no idea if anything was done to the transmission but mine feels like a slug.......especially watching this video
I am looking at a 05, with 310,000 miles, brand new automatic transmission in it. 3500 dually truck. If I buy it, keep the motor stock to keep the trany alive? And can I get manual hubs for it? -- buying it to tow 20,000 pounds ISH. (I have a 40' goose neck, plan on hauling hay). Equipment (over mountain passes).
I just ordered this setup from you and I'm super excited to give it a try. Your EGTs in the video are downright "chilly" compared to mine. I can't seem to get mine to go down from 1250. I have +50 injectors, exhaust and intake. Otherwise, stock 2005 G56 6sp manual. I've been using the good ole Smarty S-06(?) that I bought in 2009. Worked great on the #5 tune, but since adding the injectors, I'm down to #1 or #3 (no difference in EGTs between the two) and it's just hot all the time. Really looking forward to this new setup and your custom tunes.
Im pulling a 2 car trailer with the bed filled with tires, 2005 5.9 cummins 2500 bone stock, stock auto trans, pulling roughly 10k pounds. Used to pulling around 6k and i go through a tone of giant hills here in Québec Canada to get to the race track.. im a little worried with the 10k pounds cause i do have to give her a lot to pull up the hills with only 6k. Am I worried for nothing or should i be good?

Towing is great especially with the tuning. These trucks were born to pull. 5th wheels tow so nice you can forget they are there, very smooth. Our trailer can sleep 6. 2 rear single bunks, dining room table turns into a bed, sofa turns into a bed and a queen in the bedroom.
how easy and necessary is this tuner to install. I have a 2005 Dodge with a 5.9 and am planning a drive that will take me over the rocky mountains. Also do you allow the the tow/haul do the braking down the back side of the mountain or do you assist it with normal braking. Do you find that when you brake it is the ideal amount or would you suggest a braking module as well. Ill be towing 10000 lb travel trailer.
Trent the tuner is very easy to install, plug and play. If you get your mm3 or touch (get an mm3 if you're going to get my tunes) I can get you tuned up within 24 hours. Ive had nothing but pleased customers so far. I do use tow haul to brake a bit, but without a pacbrake installed it's only mildly effective. Make sure your trailer brakes are working well on all axles and keep your speeds low.

I love it, but I'd like some tips how to keep them egts down. Just changing the timing advancement and rail pressure and what not. There are very limited options, but I can't use much power before I hit 1200 degrees. Any recommendations on that tunner settings? Its an 06 3500 ccsb g56 3.73 on 34s. I do have a banks exhaust brake and s&b intake, and mbrp 4inch high flow muffler, no cat.

That's a totally reasonable coolant temp for towing up a pass. Also if you can keep your trans cool by locking the TC it won't be dumping that heat into the coolant through the heat exchanger...
@@thatdudewonu Yea 200 is not bad from what I have seen towing. The only time I saw more 210-230 was when I was towing a steep grade with lots of switch backs. The trans floating between 1st and 2nd and the torque converter never really locked up. I had the extra deep pan from ATS so my trans ran very cool most of the time 160-180 even towing highway. You don't want them to cool from what I have heard. They need to get warm enough to get any condensation out.
Adam that's normal. I wouldn't start to "worry" about the trans temp until it hits 230+. Of course if you know it's slipping you want to stop that right away regardless of temp.

The edge probably didn't do much timing adjustment in the mid rpm high load region of the timing maps. The result is fuel is injected late and exhausted while still burning sending your power out the exhaust pipe.
One thing to keep in mind is the touch won't alter your transmission at all. MM3 Tuning will and will give you the same power levels the touch has... www.mm3tuning.com
Mine is a Smarty Touch but I recommend the MM3, they are very similar but the MM3 is intended for use with custom tunes and includes all hardware for shift on the fly tuning👍
Diesel Camper one of my friends has a 06 5.9 with a 5 inch turbo back straight pipe, he spent an extra 3-500$ sound deatonating it and is way more dailyable, he uses it for towing construction equipment and materials atleast twice a week and says that you cant really tell its been straight piped

Diesel Camper i have a rebuild tranny so how high is you transmission going when you pull a camper? I was driving today and my transmission was on 195 with out pulling.
Usually 220ish going up a pass. If you can keep your TC locked it should stay there or lower. If your 40mph or below you can manually shift into 2nd and it will lock the TC.
On the mechanical side of things, did you perform any modifications to your transmission setup? We have a 2005 1-Ton Dually Crew Cab that flashes incredibly quick and your transmission tuning (software side) is superb. I believe you have a longer final drive ratio rear end (ours is the 4.10:1). Hoping that I can use my HPTuners on our truck this year, but it might not give as much flexibility as your Smarty MM3 setup.
I did a mild build with red eagle clutches, shift kit, low stall TC, Kevlar front band and billet accumulator. My tunes won't work with hp tuners, but mm3 is good to go.
With a shift kit it will have better clutch holding power. The input shaft should be fine unless you're doing boosted launches or racing. Just for a 100hp uprate you should be fine if you drive with some sense.
I just recently went to sw3 on the smarty. No racing are launches its my work horse. Anything else i should change on the sw3 setting? 4inch exh,cai and thats it for mods

Why do you doubt it? The 6BT Cummins from Chrysler can easily gain 100hp by tuning alone with no hard parts. Major injection timing changes and some minor fuel changes.

The drone of the Cummins and the spool of the turbo is so intoxicating. This one sounds better than my 6.7.
Remove your silencer ring and it will sound better, 6.7s in general sound a lot better than the school bus 5.9s

Hey bud. What tuning and/or trans upgrade are u running to be 65 mph @ 1700rpm.
Man do I need to regear for my tires... With a mild turbo and injectors, I'd be hitting 1400+ if I held 65 mph towing uphill.
It's the tune... you need a better tune.

Scott Bickford If you’re towing at all 3.73 is a good middle ground. My 2500 gets about 19-20mpg at 80 mph ish (125-130 km/h) on 3.73s

Define cool trans temps.. for example @200 ect. 80°f outside temp . Roughly where should they be?

Yeah you can use a resonator or a calculated section of pipe t'd off of the main pipe to help with the resonation.

210 is just fine. The stock trans temp dummy light doesn't even come on until 265. I'm not sure about the torque, I may have meant stock.

J M yeah as long as you don’t mash the accelerator going up, and ride the brake the whole way down. This is what they’re made for.

No that's not a 10000 pound trailer I'm guess he means its tagged for 10000 pounds capacity. That means It can hall 10k not that it weighs 10k

I think youd be ok at SW5 and long as you don't burry the pedal towing up a grade. What year is your truck?

You may already know this, but towing with someone in the trailer is not only illegal but incredibly dangerous/deadly.
It's actually not illegal in many states, including mine.
Look it up on good Sam’s website it will tell you which states allow it. Lots of states actually do.
