How to Save 3rd Gen Cummins Injectors With Fuel Filters and a Fass

  • Follow along as I take on one of the key flaws of the third gen cummins platform: fuel filtration. 3rd gen common rail trucks suffer from poor stock fuel filtration, which over time leads to injector failure and expensive bills. I opted to install a Fass lift pump on my 3rd gen Cummins as it improves fuel flow, removes air, and most importantly lets me mount a 2 micron fuel filter.

    I had to replace injectors in my 06 2 years ago. I had 168k miles. My symptoms were noisier than normal engine, and rough cold starts with grey puffs of smoke. No engine damage, my mechanic said I caught it at a good time. Truck runs beautifully now. I’m looking at this after my front end rebuild.

    I bought my 2006 5.9l G56 QC SWB 4x4 brand new. Even has the same color as yours. I’ve got 390k miles and original injectors. No extra filtration. Change fuel filter every 10k miles with NAPA Gold filter. Still running strong.

      I neglected the fuel filter for a very long time. To the point it would cut out randomly with medium throttle. I’m doing the same now and the truck runs good.

    Another good option if you don't need the lift pump aspect is to buy a dual screw on filter setup. You can mount the same kinds of filters. The kit I have on my 06 is from a company called trc. It's been working great

    • @JustDiesels
      @JustDiesels  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve personally felt like in line filters with the stock lift pump is asking for issues as the stock lift pump can barely move fuel as is, so adding more restriction is only going to worsen that. I’d drop my fuel pressure at the cp3 down to 2psi with the stock lift pump and no extra filters! Not sure if you track fuel pressure, but I’d be interested to know where you’re at with those filters and the stock LP in the name of science!

      @Just Diesels can't disagree with that. For me it's a temporary solution until I get a Fass on my truck. Had to replace 4 injectors from dirty diesel and just wanted a quick and cheap safety net to prevent that again.

    I have a ‘03 HO six speed with 201K, never have had to change the injectors. Has stock fuel filter canister which I change every 15K using a Baldwin filter. Truck is running great, starts right up every time, even gets 22 MPG daily.

    • @The_MM_Life
      @The_MM_Life ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same here. The cost of the fass would cover most of the cost for new injectors. One nice thing about the 03 is the lift pump is super easy to replace if it goes out while on the road, I always carry a spare.

    • @JustDiesels
      @JustDiesels  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 201 you’re definitely towards the end of the lifespan of the injectors, but early third gens last longer than late. 06 trucks seem to have the shortest injector lifespan in my experience. Lots of people go the whole life of the truck with the stock filters, I just prefer the extra filtration and insurance.

    • @stevenanderson6658
      @stevenanderson6658 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Next u change your filter. Look down in the filter bowl after u take out old filter and before u put new filter in. My bowl was filled up with sand and dirt. Which in turn took up space for fuel then that allowed the pump to start to run dry and it started eating itself and passing that metal through the injectors. So eventually injectors and pump went to shit. Parts alone were like 3 grand plus. Then at the same time I put a fass on.

  • @terrybearden3550

    Sorry to bust your bubble but, always a bit right ?
    I’ve had two stock 03’s, first one had 300k on the clock when I sold it, 2nd my current daily driver and pull truck has 256k miles. I’ve been told and heard 100’s of time about adding extra fuel filters, sorry I don’t buy it. Tiny bit of my back ground, worked motors and mech. on offshore drilling rigs for 29 and 1/2 yrs. Re built many v12’s and v16’16 EMD motors. Our rig engines ran 24/7, every 3 week we changed the fuel filters. We would get 35k to 40k hrs. before a total rebuild on an engine. Very rare we would have an injector problem. Totally agree with what you are saying about a good filter system. The engineers that designed know a little about filter systems and how much the 5.9 needs as far as psi. As stated above both trks having 300k miles +- I never changed an injector. Only thing ever done besides general maint. is a few clutches. The main reason I never had injector issues is that I always changed the fuel filter when I changed the oil and oil filter, every 7k miles. Bottom line the 03 before April 04 had a perfectly good stock filter system. It’s just that you have to change fuel filter at half the interval that Dodge says.
    Oil and filter kits from Genoa Garage is all you need and service those 03’s every 7k miles.

    Do you have any thoughts on the Fleece Powerflo lift pump? To me it seems like the perfect super clean setup, drops right in place as factory lift pump. I’ve already added cat fuel filter and baldwin water seperator, just tapped directly into the fuel line on the truck. So since the fleece doesn’t have the filters it will work perfectly for my setup

    So having worked on diesels for the past 25 years I can point out one thing that is completely and entirely wrong in what you said. There is no air inside the commonrail system, if theres even a tiny airbubble in the system the truck wont start. Air is compressable, so just like in a brakeline youll lose all the pressure in the line if theres air in it meaning your injectors wont open and the engine wont start.
    Personally I think the whole liftpump debate, be it airdog or fass is a bit overhyped. If your truck is stock and you change your fuelfilter regularly you wont have a problem, obviously depending on where you fill up and what you put in the tank. Sure its not a bad thing to install a liftpump, or a water separator like both airdog and fass. Im going to do it on my Silverado for sure, Im just saying it isnt an absolute necessity
