Valve springs help with boost blowing the valves open on a diesel. Most people don't spin them that much faster than stock to worry about floating the valve train. Push rods make sense if you stiffen the springs but critical if you have an aggressive cam. Agreed that lift pump, head studs, and transmission are a must. The Fleece bypass is what I will install when I replace my clutch.
Even though I don't agree with everything in your vids, you gave the highest quality and knowledgeable content online. Always interesting to watch. Keep it up man.
Andrew, another awesome video. What a beautiful truck you have created. Great advice for a solid tune that will support reliability and power. I love my 03 HO with many of the reliable mods you talk about. Many thanks to your thoughtful knowledge. Patrick
Great build list! I basically have all the same stuff on my 3rd gen! Let me know when you get tired of 500hp tho 😁 I got a great recipe for 800hp to 1000hp!
Just got my 2004.5 Cummins a few days ago and people make then sound sluggish stock but truck came with a 4" exhaust and S&B intake installed and I think it rips really good stock. I wanted a 650 HP truck but having finally driven one I think 400-500 is plenty!!!!! I'll be able to save a lot of money only doing 400-500 HP vs 650 now :D
Exactly my thoughts as well. People forget they are still heavy duty trucks meant for pulling. Not race cars. Power to weight is a real thing. These things make horrible race cars lol. 400 to 500hp is perfect though. Pull like a freight train
First upgrade I did was all new front suspension: linkage upgrade, shocks, ball joints, and replaced the collapsed coil springs. Followed by the egt/trans/boost gauge because I tow every weekend. Then for an additional 5hp and 10 ft. lbs. of torque I slapped on a South Texas Low Fence Hunting sticker. lol
I had a white '99 1500 that was that nice. Almost. I was the 2d owner, and Dad knew the first one. CR regarded that year as best of BRs. Almost. I clay barred it, and it literally glowed. It had the Driftwood lower quarter panel and Laramie SLT trim, with a 318, Quad Cab 4x4. More comfy than my 05 2500.
I have a 2012 with 3.5" banks boost tubes, banks intercooler ,Banks monster ram with plate and grid heater relocation. Banks ram air cold air intake. I took out the thermostatically controlled valves on the transmission lines. It also is tuned. 4:10 gears. What a difference just those modifications made. I average about 22mpg around town. I love the truck now its like a totally different truck now. Its on 35x12x20 tis 547 and Mickey Thompson Baja boss A/T's. The truck goes pretty good
I like seeing a guy that is happy about not seeing smoke lol. I personally decided to go the 6.4 hemi route in a 3/4 ton but now I'm looking into doing a g56 swap on the truck. Mechanically the g56 should fit and the swap will be similar to a cummins however I will need to make new fuel lines. The factory lines go over the transmission right where the g56 shifter would go through the floor. Did you know that before the lines cross over the trans the are plastic? Cost cutting at it's finest I guess.
Honestly never knew that, but sounds like typical mid 00s Chrysler! Daimler was basically just gutting the poor company to flip it when these trucks were made.
@JustDiesels actually this truck is a 17 power wagon so fca era. But yeah still makes sense lol. I wish we could get the mopar brands back to the US. We would probably have some real badass stuff.
I have all the bolt ons and firepunk stg 2 trans with edge tuning due to being an 04 and on level 5. An sti was tailgating me and when we lined up at a light he couldn’t get by until 110 😂 would have like to see the look on his face. Want compounds some time.
One note to add, I’m not sure what you are seeing for consistent manifold pressures, but I was seeing consistent 27-32 psi under load. This isn’t much, but it was enough to cause my stock intercooler to leak. I’m not sure if mine was just a fluke- as I’ve seen them handle much more abuse and survive, but fwiw, I’d consider an upgraded intercooler and boots a worthwhile investment as well.
Early 04 305hp Cummins 6spd. My plan has always been about the same as you for the support mods, minus the valve work (I don't hardly push 2500rpm), but the power addatives are going to be hardware in the forms of mild turbo, injectors, and the minimalist of tunes. Have had the truck 19 years and still not very far into the list. Lol
@JustDiesels Head studs definitely need to happen. Tune wise, I've had a Smarty Jr paired with a Quadzilla box all set fairly low for so long the first Avatar movie came out afterward. Have had a FASS on it since 07 (the fairly loud one). Turbo wise have had HE 351 (good power, lost mpg), HE 351VE, and back to the stock HE 341. S&B intake. The first real step in support mods for the current plan is the clutch hydraulics...just because the original failed. Pretty much the money spent on this truck lately is maintenance, repair, and upgrades for hauling a truck camper is all.
I have same truck. 450,000km on it. Smarty Jr on performance tune and no issues at all. Going to a smarty touch, diesel Dr where I live says with my mileage studs are necessary until you go monster turbo. Already have stage 2 south bend clutch rater for 525 hp. The only time head studs are needed is if you have a low mileage truck. Otherwise the head is pretty much welded in place after 300,000km. Did a bd iron horn 361 turbo kit. No problems with it at all. Mat it all day for two years. No blow no valve float nothing.
I would do a second Gen swap with a Steed Speed exhaust manifold and a 62 turbo and the clutch south bend and head studs and 103 valve springs and push rods and while trans is out a Fleece by pass cooling and a tuner but I do have a Fleece intank lift pump and with 3 fuel filters .
I agree with everything in here if you want to make 500 hp. There is a big difference between 400 and 500 though. If all you want is to bump a 305/555 or a 325/600 truck up to 400 hp, you really just need a tune and gauges. A lift pump will make your CP3 last longer but the stock pump will make 400 hp as long as it lasts.
625’s are definitely overkill for that level of power. However a great base for when you get bored and go for more at some point. L19’s are a more economical option for stud that is stronger than the typical arp 2000/425 stud that most people opt for the first time around.
I got a very similar setup on my 06 but running an auto. I am battling high egt's when towing and in traffic and the tranny holds till I am bellow 1400 rpm's or lower. Every other vehicle I have is a manual and I didn't want to push that heavy clutch pedal in a 100 time on a trip. . . . . Love the vids too
I’d highly recommend working with someone on some custom tunes for the truck. Should really help with egt management, unless there’s something else causing your issues like a clogged air filter etc.
@@JustDiesels I just went thru the intake/intercooler system, No leaks and filter is good. My tranny (RE48) is only a 4 speed so it can hang on to 4th all the way down to 45 mph which i believe is 1200 rpm. I put in a stealth 64 turbo which moved the turbo power band up a couple of hundred rpm. The stock turbo run out up top but actually has good bottom end. I will see if we can tune it up a bit. It's actually too fast at times . . . . . . . . .they arn't sports cars!
That's what I did to mine. You missing an afe stainless steel manifold (keeps the turbo in factory position and helps to get the exhaust gasses from cylinder 4 and 5 out easier) and a 64 stealth turbo .
I got an edge evolution CTS3 and I was super happy until I realized how dirty the tune was. I’m hoping it leans out once I upgrade the intercooler and monster ram intake
This was a great informative video. Do you know what the cost is for doing the Star the Val Springs and the pushrods the coolant bypass And the tune that you were running in this video
Great video! Can’t wait to do the same for my 2005 Ram. Like you said get the front end done first with the T style steering, carli ball joints, carli steering stabilizer, unlocking hubs bearing races etc, I’m super close to Hemet would you recommend Maximum Diesel to install those components? Thanks again
I have a blown engine and tranny in my 05. What custom engine and tranny builder would you recommend for towing up and down the grapevine and tehachipi grades reliably?
When you do the video about the Voltaire clutch, please compare the noise level to the South Bend dual disc. I have the South bend and it is a bit loud.
I've driven a NV5600 with Southbend's dual disc and it sounded like a rockcrusher. I have the OK-HD in my G-56. It's silent but the trans growls quite a bit in 2nd driving down my residential street.
@@davidanderson8469 my G56 was loud in 5th until I changed the fluid to 50 weight synthetic and added an extra quart from the top. Much quieter now but shifting into 1st when cold noticeably more stiff.
What about air intake turbo size injection size and cam+exhaust size what have you done in terms there things i wood like to know to complete the recipe for Power and Talk??
You can maintain stock turbo, exhaust, cam, and injectors for 500hp. The only items needed are tuning, head studs, a lift pump, and ideally push rods/valve springs too.
I'd recommend transmission first. That gets you a good base to build on. You can then go for a basic tuner. if you want more, that's when head studs, valve springs, push rods and custom tuning come into play.
Andrew.... Awesome videos. Agree with everything you did. But I'm curious. Why not an upgraded drop in turbo such as the Calibrated Power Stealth STR or even a Stealth 64 since you're at sea level. And when you're throwing on a mild upgraded turbo, why not an upgraded manifold such as the Steed Speed? And lastly, since you were already into the head/valve train, I'm curious why you didn't just go ahead and throw in some very mild BBI or Exergy injectors/tubes? I would really like to know your thoughts. Thanks again and keep the great videos coming!
The only reason I didn’t is so I can make separate videos on those upgrades and document changes/improvements. Normally it would be more cost effective do it all at once while you’re already in there.
The head studs are WAY overkill, I'm running my early 04 with a 67/67 on stock fuel making 50+ psi on a completely stock motor. It makes 470 to the tire and it has been doing that for the past 100k with no head gasket issues.
I highly recommend studs. Always better to do that than blow a head gasket and be on the side of the road with a trailer. It’s just so easy to prevent.
nice videos and I have come to trust your videos, so do you know the most reliable Hemi 5.7 06 channel? I would like to perform some upgrades to it, nothing crazy just to give it a little umph. thank you.
Have a 08, bought 2 years ago its 5500 6.7, they derate the motor, previous owner deleted, put 50hp turbo, had it hardwire tuned to feed that turbo, has asin transmission, dont know the hp out put, i pull big skidsteers. Thinking i should be safe, what you think??
Love the channel. I been watching alot of your videos recently because I'm trying to get a dodge ram cummins 4x4. I still can't decide on a 2 or Gen 3 or maybe a 1st gen. I've been learning a lot about diesel for you and I just want to say thank you very much still can't decide on which gen Ram I wanna get.
Glad I could help! If the truck is a toy, go first or 2nd gen. If you’re going to be daily driving and working it, go third gen. At least that’s my vote!
Why don’t you change the cam that keeps intake and exhaust valves open at the same time for emissions to return some of the exhaust it to the motor and it’s not good for soot in cylinders and oil ?
It's just not worth the hassle. No reason to pull the cam out unless you're doing a full overhaul as the gains aren't there. Totally makes sense if you already have the engine apart though.
Love watching the videos and following your builds. I have a 05 and really wish EF Live was available for it. I have hp tuner but no SOTF. What was your reasoning for going FASS over Airdog? I see this question all the time and no one ever really has a great reason lol.
Honestly, Fass has just never let me down. My last pump had 140k miles on it trouble free, and I now have two more that have been flawless. They’re also super nice to work with.
Did you add the steel "mesh" plate with the square holes in front of the radiator/Intercooler? My 2007 5.9 doesn't have that. It just happened to catch my eye in the video.
2nd gen manifolds do flow air and sound better, but I have plans for some big shock towers and an over the engine brace. I'll need to get that on to see if everything would clear. I may be limited to a stock position turbo, which isn’t a huge deal since those still make more power than I’d need!
I ended up having Russ at maximum pull the head and do a fresh head gasket along with the studs. Probably overkill for a 40k mile truck, but oh well. Then I know it’s going to be solid!
@@JustDieselsI feel like head studs aren’t worth it unless your putting a new head gasket in. I’m currently running an 06 auto with 45% over injectors and efi live tunes on stock head bolts. Have not yet blown a head gasket yet but won’t be surprised if I do eventually.
@maximumdiesels Russ is really good people. He knows what he's doing. He's very honest. If you're in the area, he absolutely needs to be your mechanic.
Was your truck always geared so high where you could go 65 mph in 5th? My 2004 2500 5.9 6 speed is geared super low, I have to be in 6th if I even want to go above 45 mph, im like the 3rd owner so im not sure if they ordered the tow package or something when it was bought from dealer.
No that’s how these trucks are! On 37s I now do 2k RPM at 70 so I can just barely keep up with traffic. On stock tires I’d be screaming at 2500 RPM to keep up haha
05-07 G56s (those behind stock 5.9s) have a final OD of 0.79. Those G56s behind the 6.7s (07.5-18) have a 0.74 OD ratio. Granted, we're just talking 150-200 rpm, but it all adds up.
Your tuner's page no longer exists. 37's sure lower your rpm's. With 285-75-17's I'm at 2000rpm's at 65 mph on my 2007 5.9 What fluid are you using in the trans?
Hey Andrew you should make a video on a 6.4 powerstroke, I’ve had awful luck with mine but it would be cool to see what you think or the owner of the truck
Don’t need anything other than a tune. Guys convince themselves they need all sorts of stuff but a bone stock truck with a heavy tune and trans or clutch will not blow a gasket and won’t drain the lift pump all the way.
@@jd7ncoke77I have an early 04, 305hp stock. With tune 5 on the Edge Juice, the truck feels like a completely different animal. Edge says tune 5 adds something like 175hp I think.
@@JustDiesels i have the exact same truck 06, 3500 qcsb. I have custom tuning via mm3, but up here in Utah my tunes smoke a bit more than others say down by sea level

Add some 100hp injectors for that extra hard pull! 👌
It’s from Geno’s garage! www.genosgarage.com/category/condenser-guards
@@JustDiesels Thanks, small insurance price to help keep those condenser fins straight!
Agreed! I have one on my 2nd gen too. Really cleans up the look of the front end.
I wish I could do this for a living
Me too lol.
Do you have a playlist for just your 3rd gen? I just bought my first truck (03 Dodge RAM 2500 with a 5.9) a few weeks ago. Thanks in advance.
Yep! All the videos are on that playlist!
another awesome video man
What kind of a/c condenser guard do you have?
Have you looked into a 2nd gen exhaust manifold swap? Curious what the benefit is if any
2nd gen manifolds do flow air and sound better, but I have plans for some big shock towers and an over the engine brace. I'll need to get that on to see if everything would clear. I may be limited to a stock position turbo, which isn’t a huge deal since those still make more power than I’d need!
What headlights do you have on your truck?
How much weight could you tow comfortably with a build like this?
My dream truck
Do they have those tunes as well for 6.7 3rd gens? I really like the tune 3 and want that for my 6.7.
Yep! NRE can do EFI for 6.7s too.
Do you think this motor will last as long as a stock motor ?
What are you getting for mpg after all these Upgrades?
are we able to get the same custom tunes with nick?
Yep!
Were the headstuds done 1 by 1, or a head off install? Looking for guidance on this topic with my obs 7.3. Thanks Andrew, love the videos.
Yeah you can definitely get away with it for a while depending on how you drive, but it will get you eventually haha.
How much did all that cost in the end?
Next the 24v 2nd gen?
It’s definitely in the plans!
@maximumdiesels Russ is really good people. He knows what he's doing. He's very honest. If you're in the area, he absolutely needs to be your mechanic.
He’s the only shop I trust with my driveline and tough diagnostic work!
Does anybody make a high flow water pump for the 5.9 ?
How did you retrofit the tune switch into the cig lighter spot?
I covered that in my original video but forgot to post links here! It’s a longhorn fab 3d printed mount for the csp5 switch.
So I have an 03 what tuner would I need to get the single injection tune
NRE should be able to set you up with some tunes!
@@JustDiesels do you know what the gearing ratio or whatever its called is for yours, so i can compare it to mine
My 2003 HO is 3.73
Mine is a 3.73 factory gear ratio truck with a G56 transmission.
05-07 G56s (those behind stock 5.9s) have a final OD of 0.79. Those G56s behind the 6.7s (07.5-18) have a 0.74 OD ratio. Granted, we're just talking 150-200 rpm, but it all adds up.
did you get those rear window stickers up yet?
No….. BUT thank you for the reminder haha
Andrew why do you only need to do a clutch if you have a manual?
The rest of the transmission can handle 500hp no problem if you drive it with some respect.
Your tuner's page no longer exists. 37's sure lower your rpm's. With 285-75-17's I'm at 2000rpm's at 65 mph on my 2007 5.9 What fluid are you using in the trans?
Thanks to 37s I’m 2k at 70 now. As for the transmission, I’m using Hotshot fluid.
Link to that ac condenser cover/ guard?
Here’s a link! www.genosgarage.com/product/wd-cond-gr-0307/condenser-guards
Will the 48RE trans hold 500hp reliably?
Not stock! Built it will hold that no problem.
Where can i get your tunes?
They’re from NRE Performance: www.nreperformance.com/
Did you film your tuned truck in Mexico or California?
Uhhh… Northern Mexico? Haha
Hey Andrew you should make a video on a 6.4 powerstroke, I’ve had awful luck with mine but it would be cool to see what you think or the owner of the truck
two words, cummings swap
@@timyanke9559one word: Cummins*
Don’t need anything other than a tune. Guys convince themselves they need all sorts of stuff but a bone stock truck with a heavy tune and trans or clutch will not blow a gasket and won’t drain the lift pump all the way.
Lol unless you wanna lift the head ya better throw it some studs.....
@@lemjohnson6798 No stock truck with a tune lifts the head. Period. Never happens junior
We need one for the 4th gen’s how to make 550-650 hp reliably.
All this power can be achieved on a stock turbo?
On an he351 yes. I dont think the he341 will make this power.
@@whitebanditwagon9309 I have an 03 High output, is that what's on there?
@@jd7ncoke77 i believe 04.5 is when they made the switch
@@jd7ncoke77I have an early 04, 305hp stock. With tune 5 on the Edge Juice, the truck feels like a completely different animal. Edge says tune 5 adds something like 175hp I think.
Does it not smoke much at all?
No it’s pretty sweet! You can see in the gopro view but even in tune 5 there’s nothing
@@JustDiesels i have the exact same truck 06, 3500 qcsb. I have custom tuning via mm3, but up here in Utah my tunes smoke a bit more than others say down by sea level
If they’re custom tunes, just have them back the fueling off a bit!
What kind of mileage do you get? I've seen as high as 25.5 hand calculated on the highway. My truck smoked a bit even on stock tunes
Step 1 chop exhaust off
Step 2 cold air intake
Step 3 smarty tnt revo
The builders say no to Fleece bypass system !
If I had the money I would have you build up my truck.
What the heck I know Russ he's a friend of mine and I use the same machine shop he uses
He’s such an awesome guy!
Why would you test the power on the top end ? Don’t really get that . Be a man boost launch that thing in tune 5 and send it sideways …
I’ll send you the bill for my tires and clutch haha
Buy the truck for $15k, add $15k for mods if an automatic to look like this.
I mean yeah that sound about right dude. Diesel ain’t cheap but it’s so worth it and it lasts forever
For best reliability replace with gas motor.
Fast, reliable, cheap... pick 2
The fundamental law of vehicle modification haha
Now with A load
Promo-SM 💐
Sadly manual and automatic even at the same power is such a different feel
It’s true. An auto always feels so much faster than a Manual.
Do this but again but on a 2nd gen
That’s the goal!
