Haval Jolion 2022 review: What's the cheap GWM Chinese small SUV like to live with in Australia?

  • The Haval Jolion has taken Australia by storm, largely because it's one of the best-value small SUVs on the market. While competitors like the Honda HR-V and Kia Seltos seem to be increasing in price on a monthly basis, and suffering from major stock shortages, there have been plenty of new compact SUV customers looking at what's around that isn't from a mainstream brand.
    GWM Haval has pitched in with the Jolion, with eye-wateringly low pricing, extensive equipment lists, long standard safety tech lists and interesting looks, not to mention levels of practicality that belie the size of this model.
    But what's it like to live with? Andrew Chesterton spent three months in the mid-spec Lux model, which comes with the same 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and found there were lots of things that were enjoyable about the Jolion, but a few that really frustrated him, too.
    Watch the video for an overview, or read his three monthly instalments at the link below.

    If you swipe left to right on the infotainment screen you bring up short cuts to heated seats, drive settings etc. I have had move for three months now and I am very happy.

    Seems these reviewers need to read their manuals if they don’t know how to work something and make sure all updates are done on their vehicles. The acc had an update before Xmas so it works perfectly now . I’ve never had any wheel spin or issue with gearbox finding correct gear .
    Also an easy swipe to the right uncovers all shortcuts to heated seats, volume , drive mode etc . No need to go through menus.
    If he’d known about these shortcuts and had updates done this review would be almost perfect. Will stick to reviews from actual owners

    We have the manual version. What I don’t understand is why the gears are so long and far geared from each other. You have to rev it to 3000rpm in certain instances to make sure you’re at 2000rpm and on the turbo when you engage the lower gear. Is the DCT the same? That’s definitely gotta have a negative impact on it’s economy. I don’t think the engine is at fault

    I have owned a Jolion for just over 9 months and have clocked up just under 10,000k's. Most of the Reviews by so called EXPERTS leave me more than a little bemused. Most of my daily driving has been done around town, with most return trips being less than 10 kilometres and I do not bother too much about fuel Economy. My extended Road trips have ALL been between 500 and 1000ks each way. On these trips I use 98 RON Fuel, find the engine runs cooler and the Fuel Economy is FANTASTIC, usually EXCEEDING 36 MILES PER Gallon, at an average speed of 105 KPH. Parts of most extended trips have 110 KPH Speed limits for extended periods here in Queensland.

You're talking in KMs when referring to distance, but with efficiency, you choose MPG... which has zero baring in Australia and to an Australian audience... after a quick Google, this Australian' finds that means 6.5L/100kms, which indeed is great... don't mix units...

      I disagree, I’ve driven my partners Jolion for 2 months now and everything he has mentioned is pretty accurate. I will however say that my partners has not yet had the adaptive cruise control fix that others have talked about. The swipe right for controls is something he missed but I really wish that they did a software update that moved it to swipe left and shifted the home button to the right hand side for the Australian market to make it easier to reach.
      The car is constantly caught out of gear and has a big delay before the correct gear kicks in. Perhaps I’m too used to the refined engine in my Mazda. A local tune could improve this car greatly I reckon.

      Hi OG, I just got my Haval Jolion Vanta 2 months ago. Let me tell you more bad news what I discovered. You're right, wtf why we are getting 1 Smart key fob. Now if I may ask you did you get a Key Number Tag as in owner's manual Page 18? If so, it could be last 6 digits in brackets are your Smart key fob security codes and that raise a concern of security risk. I contacted Haval Australia and asking for Key Number Tag otherwise I will escalate it to ACCC/fair trading. After that they agreed to change the complete key set and gave me a Key Number Tag but was different numbers. When I first asked the dealership where I bought my car they told me is the last 6 digits of the VIN number and that was when I raised my concerns with Haval Australia and that's when they said they will changed my car complete key sets then only they can give me the Key Number Tag because they can't order just the Tag. To cut the long story short, I suspect the car fob security codes is the last 6 digits of your VIN number, saying that why Haval don't give you the key number Tag and suggesting is for security reasons. According to the owner's manual, you have to give the Key Number Tag to the new owner and who is Haval trying to BS? Please let me know if you got the Key Number Tag?

    @aaronjones1561 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I’ve seen quite a few reviews on this model, but this is the first one I’ve seen that raises all the issues I’ve had when driving my partners Jolion.
    I can look past the annoying quirks, like an excessively loud indicator, clunky infotainment system and annoying driver fatigue system; what would stop me from buying one for myself is how aggressive the breaking is on the adaptive cruise control (though I hear there is a fix). It’s so aggressive at times that I’ve actually been frightened someone behind me my run up the back of me. While that can be switched off, what can’t be fixed is how much this car gets caught out of gear. Most times if you accelerate from a crawl it will be so sluggish that you have to put your foot down to get any momentum, than suddenly it’s like it’s dropped back 2 gears and you’re taking off so quick the tyres sometimes spin and the engine is revving like crazy.
    Sports mode improves this but than the car is way too sensitive making it really difficult to maintain a cruising speed anywhere between 0-60 without it jerking every time you lightly press or depress on the accelerator.
    I’ve test driven a Haval H6 and experienced similar if not worse performance. Though I am very curious to see how the upcoming Haval H6 hybrid will perform. I’m hoping the electric motor will provide a smoother and more immediate acceleration, because it’s undeniable that these cars offer very impressive tech and interior comfort for the price.

    • @rahul20061982

      Bro same thing with me. I went to test drive Haval H6 and some how couldn't absorb all the quirks. Was not satisfied. The dealer tried his best. But I really wasn't happy. For starters the steering wheel is too thin for my liking. Secondly the basic features like rolling windows up and down. The ematedial used is cheap and gives you a feeling as if glass is scratching against debris ,I even stopped the car to clean the window liner thinking something is stuck. But it's just the material. Third the engine is always ready to go. Tires screech and spin event time I start from stop. Really needs tuning and linier acceleration. 4th. The seats behind are too squishy as if they gonna sag after 3 or 4 years of use . I mean there are so ma y points I can write. Like turbo sounds like a fan flapping .U name it I have it. Good for budget buyers but not good for ppl who have come from quality cars like Hyundai , Subaru and Volkswagen etc

      @aaronjones1561 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@rahul20061982 I mean I wanted to like it but just too many things bug me. Another thing we discovered is that the sensors under the back seat, middle seat in particular are extremely sensitive. Every time a passenger would lean over to chat to me by putting there hand even lightly on the middle seat, the seat belt warning would go off. It was driving us nuts.
      Another thing is that it takes for ever to kick into drive after reversing.

      You know ppl don't realise this thing and defend this car and maker. I have nothing against it. They are like Kia and Hyundai 10 years back when no one bought them. Again I would say good for ppl on budget who don't wanna buy a hatch back they can move up and also keep ini d the issues cause initially all these issues will be ignored as car will be new and the driver and family will be excited but slowly slowly these issues will start getting on your nerves. Just like a new couple lol. TBH I think if I would shave spent 10on more I could have come up with 10 more issues. But I actually sat in the car for 5 min and decided not my money's worth m. It then again it's us. Ppl might hate us for saying all this as there is a huge population who doesn't have issues at all lol.
