2023 GWM Haval Jolion review: S | Chinese small SUV's sporty variant targets MG ZS and Chery Omoda 5

  • The 2023 GWM Haval Jolion is officially a popular small SUV, having amassed legions of fans thanks to its strong value-for-money proposition. But other Chinese models in the segment are also on the rise, with the best-selling MG ZS recently joined by the ambitious Chery Omoda 5 - so the pressure is on.
    It's no surprise, then, that GWM has taken the opportunity to inject a bit of life into the Jolion line-up with the release of a sporty new variant, the S. Yep, this new family member is aiming to offer a more engaging driving experience with the addition of independent rear suspension and an upgraded 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with 130kW of power (+20kW) and 270Nm of torque (+50Nm).
    So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Tom White hops behind the wheel of the new Jolion S to see if the 'S' really does stand for 'sporty. And as he finds out, the small SUV is a lot more fun to drive than most people would give it credit for. But it has some serious flaws on the safety front...

    It seems this guy maybe friends with Matt from ‘the right car’ just some complaints about things that don’t matter to people who own these cars .
    The seats in the same material as almost every new car these days is not thin at all and is more hard wearing than genuine leather which hardly any new cars use these days
    The badges are the same as Volvo Skoda Porsche Range Rover and lexus
    U simply swipe right on screen and have all the shortcuts including volume control no need to go through menus .
    The radial shifter lets you know when you move to d or r , u can easily feel when you change through the knob
    Also the transmission is so smooth and you don’t know your moving through gears as it’s so seamless

  • @mrredfox5
    @mrredfox5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    If you swipe left there’s shortcuts… including volume on the left side of the screen for the passenger.
    With the rotary gear shift, it’s not that difficult to use. From park, rotate clockwise once for Drive. When in drive rotate left twice for reverse. And since it’s electronic, you can just turn the engine off… the gearbox goes into park automatically - as mentioned in the manual.

      No excuse for not having a manual volume knob. It's stupid engineering.

    Gotta say, this is the most critical OZ review of the Haval Jolion, period! I was in the market for a small SUV, with a strong warranty, roomy interior for me and the 6 foot plus footy boys and decent turbo performance. I trawled the local Toyota (18mth waiting list), KIA (37k buys nothing decent) and MG (dodgy infotainment) manufacturers and stumbled across this, GWM from a recommendation. Strewth!! How great is it?? To say, GWM have already upgraded the power output and re-configured the rear suspension for a supple ride, this thing just blew me away! HUD, panoramic sunroof, digital screens and interior space for ages, had me grabbing the cheque book out! Plus, it looks great. I'm getting thumbs up in traffic, people on the street asking me what it is and how good it looks etc...Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Oh, and the kicker..$37k drive away..

    My wife has now had her Jolian Vanta for 19 months, we both love it. Once set up the systems have worked flawlessly. We get under the quoted fuel mileage most of the time in Adelaide suburban traffic, though if you drive it hard it increases quite quickly. Overall, the best smallish car i have driven in my 72 years. And one should compare this car with others of like equipment, not like one reviewer who compared it with a similarly equipped Toyota cross which costs nearly $20k more. Couldn't give a stuff about the number of badges, there's a volume control on the steering wheel, plus easy access through the screen. Once the media screen is setup you barely touch it again. I guess time will tell how durable this car is 10 years on.

    "There is no volume knob that can easily use", except for the one that is on the steering wheel just where my hands are. I will also complain about the safety features but wait I can turn them off, what a deal breaker! Oh, Look, GWM who the brand Haval the makers of the jolion have put the 3 badges... woe is me!
    This shows the preconceived ideas that Aussie reviewers come with when it comes to Chinese cars, it's more of a "what can nitpick and complain about "than an actual fair review. There is nothing fundamentally wrong or a so-called "deal breaker" here, just great value for money.

  • @wcrash9361
    @wcrash9361 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The comment was ridiculous that you have to turn all the safety features off before you drive. Also quite irresponsible to suggest doing that .
    Lane keeping assist only nudges your wheel slightly , the fatigue monitor can easily be turned off and only turns on when u turn it back on .
    Your ignorant comments about your data being recorded was just ridiculous.
    Also the rear window is not tiny or letterbox like at all, I have driven Kia and Mazda suvs which are all similar, you can see all of the road behind you and more
