Watch this car review before you buy! 2023 GWM Haval Jolion review (Jolion S small SUV test)

  • This car looks so good on paper, but is so disappointing in reality
    It has all the right ingredients to make for an impressive small SUV - a five-star ANCAP safety rating, a spacious interior, decent styling, sharp prices, a long warranty and lots of tech. But it's like they handed the recipe to a six-year-old and asked them to bake the cake, because this is a flop, in my opinion.
    For this test I spent a week with 2023 GWM Haval Jolion S, which is the newest addition to the small SUV range from the Chinese brand - it has more power and torque than the standard models, a black exterior styling pack, and revised suspension.
    But just like the other Haval Jolion models I've tested, it is a really annoying car to live with. If only the brand spent a bit more time fine-tuning the technology and powertrain before it released this car, it could well be a great option. But as it is, I am convinced you can do a lot better.
    Watch this (rather long!) video to see what I'm on about.

    Just bought a S. Best value for money suv in the market. The finishes are premium. Styling is awesome. And I was pleasantly surprised with the power it packs for a 1.5. Within 5 minutes of the test drive, I said to the salesman that I was convinced. We had to go back to choose a color. Chose the red, just like one in the video. But would probably go with the grey if I could choose again. It looks quite edgy with the black rims.

    I own the Jolion Hybrid - I like, but not love it. The price was right, and the features very good. Here in Thailand, the only competition for a hybrid in this range was the Toyota Corolla Cross, which has a crap interior in comparison, and costs US$8K more. Frankly, I can live with the quirkiness. Who needs volume buttons, when they're on the steering wheel or backwards/forward steering wheel adjust, when you can simply move the seat? Today, I do 90% freeway driving, so I don't get the economy from the hybrid, but it's still averaging 8km/100km. It has great pick up even in normal mode, and a smooth transition from petrol to EV. Gripes would be mostly associated with the overbearing safety system, which can be moderated from the screen. Matt is correct about the climate controls, which are far too hard to get to. I've gone 7K km, and find the Hybrid to be great value for $$. I bought it with a view to keep it at least 2-3 years, and then see, but so far so good.

Corolla Cross is 10k more and good luck getting one in the next 2 years. Is the Jolion perfect? No but no car is. It is certainly much better than this review and worthy for consideration.

Is it really sensible to wait a year or more for a car especially knowing that when you get it youre not going to pay the price you booked at but more? @@therightcar I know you will agree, the ASX is a very old platform that has been refreshed to the end of its life, the Puma is so small and the Venue doesn't sell for a very good reason. But as a reviewer, I expect a fair review and it is clear you are reviewing a car you hate. It is clear you are biased with Haval or Chinese cars in general. By the way, I don't own a haval yet but it is top of my list. It is certainly not perfect but a much better proposition to the competition.

    As usual Mat, another great review, but I do think you were a little too harsh in relation to the driving experience. Yes, that DCT can be jerky at very low speeds, but that can be said for pretty much every other manufacturer featuring said gearbox. Also, what drive mode were you in? I can only assume ECO mode as that does dampen the engine response purely for economy. My (non-S) jolion performs admirably in NORMAL mode and when put into SPORT, is quite the rocket! Price wise, it has no true competition, for to get the same features (HUD!!) will set you back mininum $40+K. I love mine and only wish I knew about this upcoming 'S' model 6 months ago.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for your comment mate - but with respect, I disagree. This car isn’t as good as it could be. Simple as that. I’ve driven every single one of its competitors - literally, EVERY ONE - and the Jolion, in simple terms, simply isn’t as good as it could be when it comes to the drive experience. I bloody hate that DCT - it’s a terrible example of the breed. Go test drive a T-Cross and see what I’m on about.

      @@therightcar One of the amusing things about this, is that if you do the research, the vast majority of these Chinese DCTs are direct copies of the VW DCT. It seems it's more to do with the software they use. I've driven some pretty bad DCTs from EU makes too. After driving a few Chinese DCTs and CVTs recently, Chery seems to have the most sorted DCT of the Chinese brands. They even admit they copied the transmission from "the Germans" and they hired ex GM, Hyundai and VW engineers to assist them. I hate CVTs, but the Honda, Kia and Subaru ones seem to be getting better. DCTs just take some getting used to. My guess is Haval haven't sorted out the shift logic yet. When they add turbo lag to a DCT you're going to have that odd lagging and surging. I've found if you set all these Chinese DCTs to Sport mode, the take off from the lights is more smooth and predictable. I was surprised how good the Chery DCT was, even in normal mode, but eco it also was laggy. The smoothest Chinese car I've driven was the Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV. It's got some sort of "hybrid" transmission, which I think is a CVT, but it feels like a normal hydraulic transmission.

    • @autopathos
      @autopathos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tlevans62with you on this. According to what I've found, even from Chinese sources (or Europeans that are working in China for these OEMs) it sometimes isn't even a straight case of copying. VW is just ridiculously huge in China and these manufacturers buy from the same providers. ZF and others have made a killing setting shop in China. It's in the fine tuning where they are having a harder time getting the stuff to play together nicely. I find Changan is doing a better job these days even though they're a smaller player than the huge GWM concern.

    Just came across this review dec2023, very interesting to hear about the DCT in this brand, I have an MG 2023 model, and that too has DCT, and yes.... the same lag and jolt forward when moving from stationary, It is also the same for reverse. so I have been happy with my MG HS excite apart from this engine issue, but having just heard it seems to be like this on other brands, makes me feel a bit better. I just can't understand why they can't sort it out so it does not jolt. if you are stationary then the DCT should already be thinking you are going to need gear 1 and then gear 2. for example. thanks, good review. :)

    This video was an odd one with recommendations to buy other cars that are not even able to be delivered for some up to 12 mths approx . When mentioning extras in different grades some extras were missed like heated seats , wireless charging 19” alloys m, head up display etc
    Said Toyota Corolla x was nice inside when myself and everyone I know who test drive one couldn’t get over how cramped it was and how much cheap hard plastic was throughout its bland interior . Kia seltos is so much smaller with cheap interior once again and still much more money
    I have seen Jolions with standard plates and all cover those holes so not sure why this plate was placed so high on the rear.
    The mention of the badges on rear was also odd when you have the same thing on Skoda, Volvo, Range Rover, Lexus etc
    The info screen is not hard at all and silly comment like you will bump buttons because u wanted to rest your hand on them was hilarious when that wasn’t even a gesture in this car , seems reviewer hasn’t seen most new modern cars have less disks and buttons these days
    They have shortcuts to all setting with one swipe of the screen or one click on ac button .
    The gear selector does stop at each selection so not sure what that was said for .
    Also this guy failed to realise most cars these days do not have genuine leather seats .
    Glad to see he had to admit on many of the positives even with mentioning some stupid biased comments about why would u want to have haval on your seat if you drive one . Yet does he say that on premium cars who have their names embossed in their seats
    Dct is smoother than most I’ve driven and haven’t experienced any turbo lag apart from the same amount any turbo engine has.
    Watching the parking was embarrassing I have never had anything like what he made it look like .
    Omg even spinning his tyres , and droning in about lag lol. What was the motive to post this video ??
    It sounded like you just hated this car before you got in it and made it hard to watch as you seemed to have been forced to make this video just to throw crap at the brand with more than one promo for Toyota Corolla x to but that instead .
    I belong to most haval fb pages and have never heard most of these issues he seemed to go on about.
    You can turn off the fatigue distraction monitor so no big deal .
    So much more negatives ive experienced with other similar cars but sadly theirs negatives strangely were omitted or said to be what you expect

      @mindfreeze0838 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A bit harsh but yeah I get your points. To be fair the excessive nitpicking is something I see most Australian and European car reviewers do, argue over the finer parts like all vehicles are meant to drive and look like Mercs, Beamers and Audis. To quote a prominent European Car Journalist "You dont pay for those things so you wont find them here" . Brands like Haval, Mitsubishi and Suzuki want to give you aspects of those higher end vehicles without the much higher asking price and other compromises(like rapid devaluation). That is the point alot of them do not get and therefore judge the vehicle with the same measuring stick they would with those high end marks(least we forget they are Luxury brands, not Volume brands). Reviewers in other jurisdictions appreciate that point and view the car for what it is, not what it isnt.

    It's incredibly stupid this car's steering wheel is not telescopic. Same goes for every other manufacturer that skips over the feature. I can't stress enough how important it is to find a perfect arm position. Especially for us long-arm folk. It increases control/safety and severely reduces fatigue, especially during long-distance driving.

    For me, screens are exactly what is wrong with how the automotive world is heading. Tactile buttons should be used for commonly used functions. The more we whinge about them the more manufacturers listen. Removing buttons is a cost saving but its honestly not worth it. I would avoid this car due to the lack of volume knob etc. It seems like a form over function decision for me. I would take function over form any day of the week (even if it costs me more).

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you mate. I call it out in everything I film or write when there isn’t suitable tactile control of key and crucial functions. It might look great on the showroom floor, and it might be cheaper to implement those functions via a screen. But there is a broad backlash, and it’s starting to take effect.

    To be fair I have heard other journos complain about the dct and its tyre squealing ways, but its something you can live with. You dont have to have a turbo to get that shove btw, even a base spec Vitara with the 1.6l NA engine can do that, not as much as this mind you but it can do it. The suspension will be firmer as its meant to be the sportier version(hence the power bump). My largest gripe with this car is the impractical boot, yes litres(which means nothing in the real world btw)wise its a good size but dimensions and features wise I would go with the Suzuki S Cross(it gets a split level floor, light, removable side partitions and bag hook) . Trim wise, I wouldnt go for the full fat or the hybrid version(that boot is even further compromised and NO SPARE WHEEL) but the mid spec Lux without the Sun Roof and full digital drivers display(the smaller TFT is nice, not like the ones found in a Suzuki these days but its allright, its not Honda bland), that has everything you need these days like a proximity key, android auto, led headlights.

      Tell me something, what was wrong with a simple 3 rotary dial (distribution, fan speed and temperature) with 2 button (AC on/off and recycle on / off) HVAC system of the past? Nothing, but they are trying to WOW you with the touch screen stuff, which fails after a while as its cumbersome to use.

    These Chinese vehicles offer great value for money and warranty
    But they’re not without their issues and build quality is well average.
    That’s why you see so many second hand ones for sale even MG
    They look cheap and no doubt as you said they feel cheap.
    Yeah Toyota is way more expensive but you’re getting build quality.
    Walk in Chinese made no name shoes and then a pair of quality made Nike Adidas etc and you appreciate the price difference.

      that depends as Toyota factories are being pushed beyond their limits also and stuff ups happen down the production line: paint and body alignment on some vehicle range.
      That said Toyota petrol/hybrid tech is near bullet proof, the engine in Atkinson cycle mode (basically it's in 50% operational mode at all times) is so under-stressed that even without the battery feeding the electric motor/s (depending ifs tri motor for eAWD models) has enough to keep the vehicle moving and also recharge the battery to the point where the battery can power the electric motor/s again, its pretty seamless also save for the engine noise.
