The 2021 Haval Jolion is much cheaper than most of its rivals despite packing heaps of features inside. So, is the new Jolion cheap for a reason? We take a critical eye to the new Jolion Lux, which costs just $27,990 driveaway here in Australia. No sponsored content here: just an honest look at whether you should buy a Haval Jolion.
Rivals to the Jolion include the Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Toyota C-HR, and Hyundai Kona.
Should you consider the Jolion for your next SUV? Or is a more established badge worth the extra spend?

Be good for you to drive and review the MG range which must have some credibility as the numbers I’m seeing on the road indicate rapid uptake of what is a visually appealing range - a MG ZST or HS seem like particularly competitive vehicles

Thank you Tom. There is a shortcut to get to some settings by swiping from the left edge of the infotainment screen to the right and you can find seat heating, a/c and driver assistance setting. I am a Jolion owner and happy with it so far. Clearly the best value for money option in the market.

For a car that is the same price as a Hyundai Venue but 400mm longer with more spec on every front, this Jolion appears on paper to be a really good value small SUV. Especially good for small families as many small SUVs in Australia don't consider comfort or practicality for the second row, but this does. Very impressive for the budget shopper.

Thanks for the unbiased review Tom.
I must say that Haval has really improved here in SA. When we give kudos to Hyundai and Kia, we almost forget that just a decade ago, South Africans had nothing good to say about the brand, but today, with the help of their imported designer (Peter Schreyer), they are really a fierce force to be reckoned with. In fact, we used to deride anything Chinese/Asian except the Japanese products (Toyota is huge in SA).
Unlike Hyundai/Kia... I predict Haval will compete with the big guns within the next 5 years with Phil Simmons at the helm of design.

After driving an Hyundai1X35 for eleven years I wanted car that would drive me. I found it in the Jolion Lux. The safety equipment such as emergency breaking, blind spot warnings, lane assist, reverse and 360* camera, etc. made the car feel very well monitored. I also test drove others such as the Seltos and Konos, but the Jolion had a solid feel on the road. I went on the same roads with each test drive, over some pretty bumpy sections. The Jolion suuspension was smoothest. It did not have the vigor of the Konos, but for a sedate drive it was far superior.

Bought mine 3 weeks ago and I'm loving it so much. Its really spacious and smooth to drive. Not good in fuel economy as they claim in their advertisement though. But for the price of 27k, the car like this is just great.
But few drawbacks about the cars that i noticed are:
    1. There's no Automatic AC temperature control(not in Premium model that i have). I had a car previously which was 11 years old, even it had a feature of automatic controlling the temperature. But for 2021 Jollion i would expect to have it on its basic model atleast.
    2. There's no volume up and down on screen. Its all on the steering wheel. If your passenger has to turn the volume up and down, they gotta use your steering wheel while you're driving.
    3. Temperature readings on AC goes from low to 12(12 is the heater). So you have to fiddle around the temperature that you would like but can't reslly set a specific temperature. And also you have to change the temperature on screen by bringing the notification screen down, so during the drive it could be a bit dangerous.
    4. When you put your car in reverse, it still moves forward. Also, on a hill if you are stopped and then drive then your car moves backwards so you gotta be careful.
    5. Sunglass holder doesn't fit any type of sunnies. Only aviators or same sort but not sports or any other one. Its a bit smaller.
Please let me know if someone has same issue or its just me. I would love to fix them if I could. Apart from that, Jollion is just too great.

I am have been looking for a medium SUV with some urgency for about 10 days. Taking into consideration that I have ignored some brands with a currently very long delivery time my short list is the Jolion, Haval H6, MG HS and the Skoda Karoq. Some like the X-trail are just getting too big, the original x-trail is less than 4 cm longer than the Jolion but the current one is much larger. The Karoq is smaller on the outside but still with impressive boot space and unique features but the bas model is about the same price of top of range H6 or HS and much more than the Jolion. Test drove both Haval’s just a couple of hours before latest lockdown and I liked the feel of the Jolion more than the H6. I think I will end up going for the Jolion, I keep changing my mind about which I like best of the 4 on my short list, and the Jolion is by far the cheapest.

After all that experience, I've come out the other end preferring hardware controls for precise, fiddly interactions like volume, temperature, fan speed, and navigation inputs.
