    - I have never watched an NFL game in my life, but I never missed an episode of corrections. So maybe that Pizza Hut sponsorship wasn't such a bad move after all.
    - You can pronounce "Tintin" however you want. It's only fair, you should see how french-speaking people pronounce "Mickey Mouse".

    I have to call out the Jackal with the "bee facts" having grown up with bee hives. The photo was a honeybee, NOT a wasp, for one. (A lot of people call hornets and wasps "bees" incorrectly, so that's no surprise.) Secondly, when a bee stings you, its stinger is pulled out as it flees, leaving the poison sack attached to continue pumping the painful venom into the victim. They do die afterwards. It's the wasps and hornets that do not lose their stingers which means they can sting multiple times and are more dangerous. Honeybees will only sting when threatened; yellowjacket wasps (usually confused by people with bees) are the little angry insect assholes that will attack you and sting repeatedly just for any perceived threat. Sort of like Jackals.

    • @kameramoerder
      @kameramoerder ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Take that back, sir, immediately! The majestic wasp is nothing like a jackal. Even jackals aren't like jackals, because both wasps and jackals get rid of a lot of stuff (other dead animals and stuff), while we Jackals might have tried to get rid of Seth's mistakes in the past, but for a while now we've added more than our fair share to the pile.

      I've been a beekeeper for well over a decade, and I agree with what you say. The only minor quibble is I have is that honey bees will also sting if they believe _their colony_ is threatened, which is why it's wise to be wary about approaching bee hives too closely. Another point worth mentioning is that, as you say, the contracting venom gland is usually left behind with the attached stinger when the bee is swatted away or flies away, and it's best to remove this and the stinger as fast as possible to limit the dose of venom injected. Usually, this can be done by simply scraping it off with a fingernail.

      @@allanmason3201 Please correct me (alcohol, plenty & often) but I got the impression that in the original bee-off sketch, the queen is the one stinging the bee-man. I always thought the queen is incapable of stinging as her role is one of egg factory. Cheers.

In the 1979 film, the character portrayed by Klaus Kinski is named Count Dracula. The reason why he is named Count Orlok in the 1922 film is because that film was actually an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula, so names were changed to avoid lawsuits. #correction never has it been said that big bird is a canary. In a 1981 episode of Mister Rogers Neighborhood When Big Bird visited the Neighborhood of Make-Believe on the show, he told the owl character that he was a golden condor, a fictional bird species.
    Later in the episode, the character King Friday XIII asks Big Bird if he’s related to the cassowary. Big Bird tells the king he’s more like a condor. Here we can see that big bird is not a canary but rather a fictional bird species related to a condor. ;)

This is the sort of magic that greats like Arsenio Hall and Johnny Carson put out- the comfortable, conversational style, the drink, the rhythm and pacing left to the host (as it should be). There's some great talent in Late Night TV, but Seth wears the crown, and rightfully so. It's easy for the discerning eye to spot a person who loves the art of comedy for its own sake.

    Correction of corrections: Queen honey bees *can* fly, but they only leave the hive to mate or during a swarm. Queen bees have stingers, but they only use them against other bees. Workers (sterile female honey bees) raise a new queen when a queen dies, not drones (male honey bees). Bees actually have been sent to space (and survived), but in a special astronaut hive (1984).

    • @allanmason3201
      @allanmason3201 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You left out a gruesome detail: a queen honey bee only uses her stinger to kill her sister-queens. This is normally done when they haven't yet emerged from their queen cells, so the queen repeatedly jabs her stinger through the wax and into the body of the trapped, unemerged queen. There are normally several queen cells in a hive (I've seen up to a dozen in our hives), and I have read some beekeepers who say that workers will fend off a rampaging queen from at least one closed queen cell as an insurance policy (mating is a very risky task, and not all queens which set out on a mating flight make it back). Oh, and the stinger of a queen is smooth, not barbed, which allows her to repeatedly stab her unfortunate sisters.
      Also, you're correct about workers raising a new queen when the old one dies (this is only possible if there are any unhatched eggs), but workers will also raise queens when they detect that the existing queen is failing and laying fewer eggs that she should. This is called supersedure in beekeeper terminology. New queens are also raised when the honey bee colony collectively decides that conditions are right for swarming, the old queen eventually flying out with the swarm, and the unemerged new queens being left behind in the old colony.

    I never thought I would be a Jackal but here we are:
    When a honeybee stings, it dies a gruesome death. The bee's stinger is structured in such a way that once it punctures human skin, the bee can't yank it out without self-amputating.

  • @farrokhsoltani6043

    Correction: bees wouldn’t be able to get to the sun to be burnt, or even fly to outer space to suffocate. At altitudes higher than about 30,000 feet, the air becomes too thin for their wings to function well enough for flight (that’s according to computer simulation of bumblebees and NOT honey bees, by UC Berkeley scientists - there seems to be the typical lack of information about what kind of bees are involved in the plot so I’ll just go for the highest estimate). So they can never get close even to the stratosphere, let alone outer space.

      @Ewr42 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      how would they even be able to fly that high up? how many calories is that?
      10g of honey woukd have about 42kcal
      if a bee weights 0.1g, and to move it 1m it takes 1/1000nds of a Newton, wouldn't the bee not be able to fly more than 420m up?
      when they go around on the ground they are constantly eating, but upwards? unless they can get to 11km/s basically instantly without burning up, how would they even get to 30,000 feet?
      Guess we'll need GMO algae bees to start our bee space program, probably throw in a few tardigrade genes for good measure and yeah, then it'll just take violating a couple laws of physics and then bees could get to the sun.
      it's not even that hard, it's not like what Seth said makes no sense whatsoever... it just takes a tiny little bit of imagination and suspension of disbelief on reality itself!

    • @farrokhsoltani6043
      @farrokhsoltani6043 ปีที่แล้ว +4

       @Shakhter Siren' True - the research cited above (Dillon and Dudley 2014) only analyses aerodynamics, not metabolic rates. It can tell us that if you let off a bee in a high altitude it'll be able to fly up until about 9000m, but doesn't tell us how it gets there.
      I suppose they could get close to high altitudes close to the ground - for instance, by traversing up the Everest - before their final majestic jump. Or fake a passport, get on a plane, wait for the take-off, find an open window somewhere and sneak out. Or hitch a ride on the back of a particularly persistent acrophiliac kestrel. Or the GMO thing - although that way madness lies...
      In general, I think here I was trying to compensate for Jermaine's shoddy scholarship by giving the scenario the benefit of the doubt as much as I could. #notalljackals

    I have to say, thank you for corrections Seth, I, like a lot of people, was dealing with a lot of depression and isolation through the pandemic and corrections just reminded me so much of me and my friends hanging out, laughing and making bad puns that it has been one of the few things that got me through all of this awfulness. I love your show and I love you (no hetero) and if I ever get to see you in person I will give you the biggest hug. Like, one of those hugs that's starts out friendly, but then lasts longer than you expected. Then you try to back out of it, but the other person won't let go. You think about calling for help, but they're twice your size and you don't want them to get upset. You start to wonder if you'll ever be free again, or is this how it all ends? They don't seem malicious, but this could be like Lenny with the rabbits. Finally after what feels like hours, you're free, and the other person is still smiling and acting like this was perfectly normal. You immediately vow to never let a Jackal that close to you again, and wonder why that wasn't already your policy to begin with.
