    The 'pter' in pterodactyl is a pretty common Greek root meaning 'wing' or 'feather', my favorite instance of which is in the word 'helicopter'. It can be broken down into 'helico' (spiral) + 'pter' (wing).

    • @RaistlinMajeren
      @RaistlinMajeren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Anti-jackal... or possibly a jackal-ception, I don't even know which anymore:
    Modern crossbows fire arrows, and it's only because of Dungeons and Dragons that you believe otherwise. Both bolts and quarrels were only used for a specific purpose that have been outmoded by technology: bolts had blunted ends so as not to cause too much damage during hunting; quarrels were shorter and heavier so as to be more useful in crude medieval crossbows but even back in the Renaissance we figured out how to make crossbows that could be long enough to fire a standard arrow.
    Gary Gygax even admitted, in retrospect, that he shouldn't have added the differentiation, as it set people's idea of medieval weaponry back by quite a bit (as is proven by this video); but he wanted to make crossbows sound more exotic. There was also the small fact that he worried about crossbows being overpowered, and, hilariously, couldn't get the idea that players tying 50 of the things together, trigger-to-trigger, in the back of a wagon and going dragon-hunting out of his head. Assigning different, more expensive ammunition to crossbows helped alleviate that.

    • @JamesCalbraith
      @JamesCalbraith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yeah I'm gonna need some citations for that, because it sounds urban-mythy and crossbow missiles have been called various relations of "bolt" in languages other than English (Bolzen, bełt) long before Gygax.

    • @danielgehring7437
      @danielgehring7437 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JamesCalbraith I wish I could, but sadly this channel blocks links. It's easy to google, though: "do crossbows" even auto-completes with "use arrows". By modern definitions, a 'bolt' is less than 16" long and/or has no vanes (feathers), both of which would make them unacceptably inaccurate for modern competitions or hunting.

      I think the correct answer is all of them. No Corrections episode is solely on its own because of how many corrections are based on previous corrections, to the point that now there's a whole Corrections Universe and you need to see the whole progression to truly understand and appreciate the jokes and callbacks. For instance, you can't truly appreciate the Shoemaker impression unless you've seen the earlier episodes with Mikey the Shoe. Plus, they're all fantastic, so it's no hardship to watch this hilarious segment!

Even if you physically kill them they don't die, their spirits still go to Valinor, they just go to the halls of mandos to reconstitute, and then they can rejoin the elves. However time moves differently in Valinor so when other beings like hobbits, or dwarves go to Valinor they age faster but they can be healed of their pains there and die peacefully, it's the only way for a living ring bearer to find peace. So it's only a euphemism for death for the hobbits but for the elves and Gandalf they literally can't die so or them it's just another life on a beautiful and peaceful continent with their gods

This is because she is supposed to be a sort of cyberpunk character, making it a nod to the author William Gibson, who is a pioneering author in the cyberpunk genre. You don't sterilize your hands (or at least you shouldn't), you sanitize your hands. Sterilization removes all microorganisms and typically requires treatment with incredibly high heats or gassing a sealed off room to be achieved (common procedure for operating rooms in hospitals). Sanitization reduces the amount of microorganisms present to a safe level. This is what we see with standard handwashing and use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
    Let's just say that if you attempted to sterilize your hands, you would not experience the tactile feeling of an old letter.

    Your less/fewer switch was an example of a super common linguistic phenomenon called "hypercorrection," which is when you incorrectly apply real or imagined grammar rules in the wrong context - i.e., trying to be correct and being incorrect as a result. Robert Menner described it as "leaning over backward to be correct," and basically said it doesn't occur when you trust your instincts. Aren't our brains amazing? Without realizing it, in that split second before you said "less," you were participating in a vital part of the process that allows human beings to communicate with one another and form connections. If we can't experiment with language as a means of connecting, language will become ineffective as it fails to adapt. Of course, we all know what someone means regardless of whether they use "less" or "fewer," but our ability to connect with one another is built off of tiny instincts like the one exhibited here. Fun!

    • @judylevitt4555
      @judylevitt4555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The "hypercorrection" classic is the misuse of "I" and "me," using the subjective "I" in the objective position, "She invited Dave and I to the party." To my ear, very ugly. You wouldn't say "She invited I to the party."

    CORRECTION: Stan is actually the eponymous character of the song, as he is the one lending his name to the title. Titular simply means "relating to the title."

    “Fewer” is for anything that can be counted and numbered - i.e. “I need two fewer guess who’s backs.” “Less” is only for an innumerable concept, something that can’t be counted, as in “There’s less mystery after he tells us who is back.”

    • @Tao_Tology
      @Tao_Tology 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      'Less' is when you are describing an overall quantity of something and not counting individual items in the group.
      'less water'
      'fewer water molecules'

    To answer Seth's question about the ending of Stan I always thought of it as Eminem still writing the letter and as he figures out the Stan on the news and the Stan he is writing to are the same he just stops and says "damn" to himself. Kinda like we see in the music video.

    To be fair, even though pterosaurs aren't dinosaurs, that wasn't a Seth/Late Night mistake. That's a mistake toy manufacturers have always made, selling them in sets and calling them all dinosaurs. Seth was just accurately stating what the product was, not taking a stance on archosaur taxonomy himself.
