Great review, Harry. BMW need to pluck whomever the lead was on this car and make him or her the top boss, particularly on the M cars. Just when I believed BMW was too far gone, they released the M5 CS. It’s hard to believe this is from the same marque that that makes the XM, iX, and some of the other abominations. This car is what BMW and M of old are supposed to be about: usable, daily performance, and unmatched dyanamics. Granted price is starkly different to the past. Big win for BMW, but we need more like it.

Thank you very much for this review Harry, I will certainly looking forward to it. I also am hopeful that you were going to do a head-to-head review of the P8 versus the CS. You did end up selling me on the P8 over the CS, by the way. Here in the US, the P8 was selling for basically the exact same price that the M5CS. Because all of the M5CS sold with a dealer markup. Jaguar’s smaller size is definitely a big advantage in my book
Anyone that pays that dealer markup or "market/price adjustment" is a Moron even for a car like this or anything. The dealers that do it should be punished by losing that car franchise too. Artificial market manipulation is against the law, but I know Porsche has been doing it with their crazy 911s for like forever.
What a strange world where to get the best dynamic M5 you have to give up things like interior storage and folding bench seats in the back. I understand they want the CS to be the most hardcore M5 out of the box but you should at least be able to option things like that back in, it's still a 5 series not a Caterham ffs.
Its one thing i like about BMW M cars and M-Lite cars, they are generally not overly loud. When driving hard sure they make some more noise, but when cruising around not beaning it the cars are generally pleasant sounding, but not annoyingly loud. I understand the drama of noise, but it would just irritate me over time if i had to live with it constantly. A mate of mine thought his number one car would be the Subaru WRX STI he bought back in late 90s, but he sold it within 12 months and got a BMW 330ci because the noise irritated him after a few months, because it was all the time.
Hi Harry, could you do a review on the Maserati Quattroporte/ Ghibli Trofeo 2022. Probably the last of the classic super saloon cars with analog dials and a cracking V8.
It's funny how I can watch Harry go on and on about fixing up a 40 or 50 year old Lancia or Jaguar and be fascinated and just not give a crap for this dull green German rich guy machine...
For me the most impressive thing is the kerb weight. 1850kg is only fractionally heavier than an E39 M5, and this is a physically larger car with 4WD and a ton more performance. This might be the last good combustion car BMW ever makes.
I’d take a B5 Saloon/estate all day long. So much more versatile - and unless you are a seriously talented driver wanting to go balls out on the public highway, the CS will be no quicker. Alpina’s are better 95% of the time. And SO much cheaper. Horses for courses.
Indeed, although even the Alpina is so fast, you can't enjoy wringing it out and that's part of my issue with all these modern performance cars, they are so fast, that 99% of people do not have the skill to ever exploit them and you cannot safely do so on the road, at which point, for fun at least, many older models are far better bets, especially if you do things like modernise the brakes. They have steering that talks (where electric systems don't), the chassis talks, they don't have loads of electronic nannies you need to switch off and the performance is more than enough to allow you to dispatch slower cars easily and safely. It's why I'll stick with my E46 coupe, even though it's the diesel, great chassis, good steering, good gearchange, looks beautiful compared to the modern ones and even sounds nice and not once, have I ever thought, you know what, I need more grunt.
A really great review I think and fair to its rivals, even though they are both a class down vs the M5. I am sure M5 CS will gain value when looking at the prices. But what I really love in this Video how Harry wears the Panerai (is it?) on the left arm and Apple Watch on the right. How backworldly was I to refuse to buy an Apple watch because I didn‘t want to swap it against my automatic. But Harry shows it - just wear both! I honestly never thought of that- stylish and modern at the same time - love it!
I honestly can't see how it can be worth (regardless of resale price) £40'000 over the regular M5, seems the " I want/ need one" factor is something BMW built into the list price.
@@KRAEMERP2010 yeah then you realise how wooden they feel and they break down on you almost weekly. Ex m5 comp owner here, couldn't get rid of it quick enough, complete lightweight it would have problems every time I spanked it.

I was fortunate to have tracked this car and then compared it to the M3CS. While an amazing car, I feel the mass is just too great, too big to drive the way it was intended to be driven. The M3CS, for me is the ultimate current BMW M Car. Make no mistake, it is incredible in every way, shape, and form but too large.
I really agree with the size of this car being an issue. I enjoyed my M5 but I found I was constantly having to slow right down on UK B roads to avoid a wing mirror clip, and I always worried when I left it 'shoe horned' into a car parking space.
Nice and early on the power through your favourite bit. The car mags used to talk about Q Cars a few years ago. Not too showy, very capable. It’s a handsome car in a company that has lost its way, again, stylistically
Jaguar P8 is a very special car and it’s extremely fast but it’s Nurburgring ring time will be closer to the M5cs and Alfa GTAm if its gonna be tested by an independent magazine. I think the Nurburgring inserts on the headrests simply implies that the car has been developed on the ring it’s got a sort Jekyll and Hyde nature about it.
Thanks for another video Harry. A DCT doesn't have the refinement of the torque converter box, but it feels so much more sporty. However, the refinement suits the M5. My take on it is that they might have gone this route to accommodate both two and four wheel drive models with the same box. Perhaps ZF already had this in place where a DCT equivalent was not available or very expensive or had to be developed.
The rev-matching interests me. I have my first auto now, a 2016 530d MSport, with the ZF8 Sport, and considering selling because I’m fed up with an auto, and one thing I hate is the lack of rev matching. As someone who rev matches every downchange in a manual, it really grates on me every time I drive if. I just assumed a TC auto couldn’t rev-match.
5:34 well, actually, that is done to make the power curve really linear as depicted there too. The throttle response must have shaped that torque graph, not the gearbox
I don't really agree with the seats BMW used for the M5 CS. Regardless of whether we're talking about an M5 CS or Comp, people use the M5 as an everyday super-saloon, not a track toy, and I think those seats will get old very quickly. Also, why seal front center console and delete it in the back? Again, this is not a Porsche RS...
thanks harry , we know it takes time and a lot of effort to make these videos but please keep on with them ;;; also be careful of too many sunday lunches when trying to squeeze into those carbon seats ;;;
Big fan for years Harry - a request that you might ignore because your insights data may tell you different. Can you test a few more classics. Apart from your own cars the last year has seen a drift towards more new metal. All your content is top quality tho, but I do like your reviews of classics.
Have to agree, a lot of this very new stuff leaves me a bit cold personally. Always enjoy getting Harrys' well qualified take on older cars I've often wondered about.
Great review, but when talking ring times it’s worth taking into account that the CS time has come from Sport Auto's test driver Christian Gebhardt and he’ll typically be 10’s off a factory driver who knows the car.
That is a great looking car. The ultimate super saloon. I hazard a guess in not too distant a future, petrol heads will miss cars like this. Great vid as always Harry. Edit: re the comparison with the Alfa GTA and the Jag Project 8, it would be fair to point out that the M5 is from the next class up, and therefore a larger and heavier car. It's the M3 which is more directly comparable to the Alfa and the Jag size wise, if not price wise.
Not for me, like somebody mentioned here I would rather have an Alpina for this kind of money. And if you want a track car you can do much better for way less money.
The big problem I have with the BMW range is that from 50 yards away it’s impossible to identify whether it’s a 3 or a 5. They’re very generic now and have lost all their style from the earlier years. No M5 should have to have internal engine sound enhancement.

Depriving the center arm rest of a much-needed storage bin underneath makes no sense in a 4,000 lb. sedan.
F80 M3 CS review would be great to see. The CS models so far have been praised very highly.
Love the M5 CS, but the ultimate M5 for me remains a choice between the E28 or the E39.
An e28 with its M88 tuned to the M1 procar race spec of 470bhp would be a dream. An M5 CS would make a sick pair
Shows how good the Jag P8 is when you swap it for a Bugatti.
🤣🤣🤣 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, made feel great! I am lucky to own a P8.
Good 'ol Tata.
Luv the Spinal Tap reference, “ turned up to 11.” You da man Harry👍
Lovely car .... and great editing work to the person keeping Harry under 60 MPH throughout the video. I salute you !
Love the look of these in that green with bronze accents, so smart
Hi Harry, could you do a review on the Maserati Quattroporte/ Ghibli Trofeo 2022. Probably the last of the classic super saloon cars with analog dials and a cracking V8.
Wow! 11:14. Ferocious acceleration! The M5 CS is such a snarling beast! Excellent video again!
bit slow nowadays th-cam.com/video/j7YqdGt19tw/w-d-xo.html
It's funny how I can watch Harry go on and on about fixing up a 40 or 50 year old Lancia or Jaguar and be fascinated and just not give a crap for this dull green German rich guy machine...
Fanchracing is a legend for leaving the pur sport with you
I love it and I feel this will become a classic, but the price jump is too much to bear for alot.
Agreed. B5 Touring, and an M3 CRT from the change. The best sports saloon bar none.
Another wonderful video Harry. Thank you! Now for the Chiron
Pretty mega car, great review as always. I know they are quite different animals but I would personally have a B5.
Lovely.
Compared to last weeks electro-van this one looks rather pretty. 😊👌
Even Edsels look pretty compared to that thing last week. I saw one in the flesh today and it didn't change my opinion.
Love the way your friend has borrowed your car whilst the petrol prices are high, hes got the timing right there haha!
This engine in E39 M5 would be EPIC!
I honestly can't see how it can be worth (regardless of resale price) £40'000 over the regular M5, seems the " I want/ need one" factor is something BMW built into the list price.
-just until you test them!
@@KRAEMERP2010 yeah then you realise how wooden they feel and they break down on you almost weekly. Ex m5 comp owner here, couldn't get rid of it quick enough, complete lightweight it would have problems every time I spanked it.
In 20 years the CS will be worth what it was bought for adjusted to inflation.
it's clearly much more special and is built in limited numbers which will make it a rare modern classic in less than 10 years. do you see it now? fact is, they're selling out, so.. :)
@@fakevirus8828 My God man, give it a rest. We get it. You had a lemon. Boo fucking hoo.
2:49 *Just received some M5 CS Stickers from EBay and it's added 48.6 MPH to my '04 Punto but sadly only now does 19 MPG - am returning to sender next week after a full test ! PS @ **3:20** I am prepared to haggle over a PX provided signing 'as seen tested and approved' statement and no Return !*
Fully agree, what's next, a 7 series CS? Sometimes too much is too much
Nice review!
The Alfa lap-time however wasn’t for the GTA, they never released any. 7.32 was for basemodel Quadrifoglio.
Exactly, my point too!
I think I heard you growl more loudly around one of those turns than the M5 CS engine did. You must have enjoyed it! Great review Harry.
Great review.
Always very educative, pure, and clean.
Fantastic colour. Your right I thought especially being a V8 it would burble a bit more. Great vid again.
Love the look of these things especially in the green. I'll put my lottery on this week and hope for the best.
Harry for all of us who returned their M5C's, wish you had one back to back with the CS..
I'd love to have the same friends Harry has, the kind of friend that kindly lends you a Chiron Pur Sport... Great video btw!
That's a very good looking BMW, and it's been a while since many have said that!
It's an amazing car, and the colour is fab - deep green...love it.
Thanks for the video!
This is the only current BMW i actually would want exactly in THIS spec well done Harry
I really agree with the size of this car being an issue. I enjoyed my M5 but I found I was constantly having to slow right down on UK B roads to avoid a wing mirror clip, and I always worried when I left it 'shoe horned' into a car parking space.
Plenty of us hustling round in 520D’s ! I think Id argue that you “adjust”.
bad driver
Nice looking BMW! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Nice and early on the power through your favourite bit. The car mags used to talk about Q Cars a few years ago. Not too showy, very capable. It’s a handsome car in a company that has lost its way, again, stylistically
Fantastic review Harry
That Bugatti bombing this review has me really intrigued me for the future review ❤️
Correction: the Alfa that did the 7:32 on the "N-ring" is the "ordinary" Quadrifoglio, the GTAm has to be significantly quicker.
Great review Harry - seems you’ve started a trend with Green since your Jag Resto! 👍
The M5 has lost a certain magic for me when it went to 4WD. I actually prefer the Alpina B5 now. I hope you can review that please, Harry.
a man of exquisite taste, chapeu!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video 👍
Motor Trend road tested one.
0-60mph in 2.6 secs and 10.7 secs @ 129 mph quarter mile.
What more can you possibly want, than an M5 CS. Great review. Thanks.
th-cam.com/video/j7YqdGt19tw/w-d-xo.html
What a stunning car!
So pleasing to see that 182 trophy at the back, countering the beast
The rev-matching interests me. I have my first auto now, a 2016 530d MSport, with the ZF8 Sport, and considering selling because I’m fed up with an auto, and one thing I hate is the lack of rev matching. As someone who rev matches every downchange in a manual, it really grates on me every time I drive if. I just assumed a TC auto couldn’t rev-match.
The ZF 8-speed rev matches in almost every BMW application in manual mode; including the non-M cars.
@@yt0500323022 I get a lunge/jerk on every downchange with mine. It feels nothing like rev-matching in a manual.
To be fair, the CS ring time was not a factory one and had a few mishaps during the race. The car is capable of a much quicker time.
5:34 well, actually, that is done to make the power curve really linear as depicted there too. The throttle response must have shaped that torque graph, not the gearbox
A Project 8 for a Chiron Pur Sport... Harry would crush on that flipping traders show.
Very nice Review Harry, love that spec!
This is the only BMW in my garage & the first buy after more than a decade
I wish Harry could test drive the new Cadillac Blackwings I think he'd really love them.
"Light bronze" that 10 years ago would have been called "oyster gold"...looks naff to my eyes but that is the nature of such things.
They’ll be bringing back hearing aid beige and varicose vein blue next.
I think it looks stunning. Pair that with the green and the amber DRLs and there isn't a better looking sedan.
Will any M5 CS really be used as an everyday car? Cant be many, I would think... So thats the answer, probably.
thanks harry , we know it takes time and a lot of effort to make these videos but please keep on with them ;;; also be careful of too many sunday lunches when trying to squeeze into those carbon seats ;;;
Sounds quite good from the outside under maximum acceleration.
the last of the decent BMWs...
I'm over here in Canada. I'd go with a CTS-5 Blackwing and keep a lot of money in my pocket for petrol!
3:23: I really need to change my circle of friends
such a beautiful car
Great video,and review
Love the Panerai & Clio Trophy, the M5CS isn’t bad either.
The big problem I have with the BMW range is that from 50 yards away it’s impossible to identify whether it’s a 3 or a 5. They’re very generic now and have lost all their style from the earlier years. No M5 should have to have internal engine sound enhancement.
The 2018-2020 M5C were doing 3 second 0-100 kmh. This is somewhere around 2.6 to 2.8 seconds
Great video, just fyi CS stands for Competition Sport. 7:32 was a time of standard, 2015 Giulia QV not the GTA/m
