Personally, I really dislike the binary nature of the debate: ICE v electric. Surely there is scope for both? Taking a simple analogy, we don't couch the debate as car v horse (at least, now), we use the car for the commute, and ride a horse for fun and enjoyment. Personally, I see something similar being the case with the electric v ICE issue. The electric vehicle is ideally suited to the daily commute (I commute 110 miles, round trip each day, and my current electric car handles this without any issue). They're comfortable, very easy to live with, cheap to run, better for the environment (they really are), and (incredibly) you can buy electricity whist out and about (with each generation of electric car accepting this at increasingly far rates). Whereas, in my opinion (pretty much evidenced from watching this video), the ICE vehicle is the perfect weekend/fun car. Earlier in the year I ordered a Mustang Mach E (one day I'm sure it'll arrive), which will be perfect for the daily commute. However, I'd still absolutely love a traditional coupé style Mustang Mach 1 for the weekend (thankfully, my wife doesn't fit the standard gendered cliché, so there is hope...). There should be room in the world for both, as both have their positives (albeit in different circumstances). Absolutely nothing wrong with being a "petrol head". But perhaps we should see that appreciation in a wider context. We need to understand that we should try and amend our approach so that is possible to be a petrol head, yet also act in a way that mitigates the impact of the daily commute, which is dull and boring, irrespective of the car that you drive. It's amazing what Audi has achieved with its first run at an electric performance sedan. I have the non-RS e-tron GT and it also is an amazing machine. Of courses the M5 is the pinnacle of ICE performance sedan engineering. But it all gives me hope that the future can still be fun for those who like to drive.
Now that they have done the work on design and development, maybe they should consider a separate model, same body, for this EV and plant a V6 500hp twin-turbo engine in it. That way, those of us who admire the design but are wary of EV's and the almost total lack of infrastructure could have one while waiting for battery technology and therefore range to improve.
@@felixdiaz893 Actually it's not, most EVs have a decent range. Anyway the range argument is rather irrelevant as most of the car drives are under 100km. And how long do you drive without a stop anyway? You should have a break every two hours or at least every three hours. Modern EVs with fast charging can charge up to 80% in under 20 minutes. But I guess you're mostly doing long trips and pissing in a bucket to save time, right? ;)
@@cypog8479 Well, it depends on how fast you're driving and where you're driving. I have refuelled conventional cars about every two hours before. Stopping for 10 minutes every two hours isn't really a problem (although I know people who will blast for 4+ hours - usually, they do long distances a lot and have no patience). If you're just munching kilometres on highways, it's doable. It's really not the car that worries me. Although range at higher speeds isn't briliant at all. That's laws of physics. Consumption at 200 km/h is just a lot higher, it can't be any other way. And using 350 kW Ionity chargers, Audi quotes 23 minutes to 80 %. Slower than I would like but doable - I don't drive long distances that often. No, the biggest worry for me in general is the infrastructure. On one hand, I shouldn't have too much charge left. But on the other hand, a charger can be out of order or they can be all occupied. And they are so far apart that leaving a reserve to reach the next charger is significant (even regular fuel stations can be quite apart on a highway). But that's still the good scenario - a highway. It gets really bad if you just want to enjoy a car on some backroads. I have crossed Europe like that. That's why you buy a fun car. If I've got the time, I will go have some fun, explore new roads. You're not going to find a 350 kW charger in some village in the middle of nowhere. Or even a small town. Currently, you won't find them in many big cities. They belong on highways. Even with a conventional car, refuelling in boondocks can entail some planning and searching. But they have enough range for me to have fun and then tuck my tail and go look for a station. This usage pattern is very different from what sensible people do. You stick fast chargers on highways, destination chargers to hotels, resorts and shops and wall boxes to homes and residential areas and ordinary people will be happy. But it doesn't cater to enthusiasts who avoid highways because they are plain boring. I really wouldn't fancy driving from Vienna to Nice on backroads in an EV. In a Cayman GT4? Yes, please. And I can't imagine it will change anytime soon. Simply because you need those fast chargers in completely different places than most people.
Chris. I bought the B5 RS4 because of you, B7 RS4 because of you, C7.5 RS6 because of you, and now I might maybe get an RS E-Tron GT cause of you 😜 Best motoring journalist ever. Period.
I rent the eTron RS for a day, never driven any Sportcar like it and it was the best day ever. The speed was just making my hands shake, I was so nervous. The accelleration was unreal, it didnt feel right for a Car to be that fast. Feels like the start of a Rollercoaster that catapults you, absolutely crazy feeling.
I'd take the M5 CS over the E-Tron. The M5 drives better, looks way better and is pure understatement. I'd take a Taycan Turbo S or Panamera Turbo S over both though, or even the CT5-V Blackwing
"What a magnificently pointless fast saloon car." That sums up the engineers at M. Pity, they would be working on batteries rather than V8s and inline-sixes in the future.
Trust me, the M brand will disappear if they won't let atleast the sport cars be combustion engined. Now electric is the fashion, wait for when everything will be powered by approssimatively the same power plant.

I recently did the full track M driving school and the M5 blew me away. As a fast road car I was really impressed and the V8 sounds so good. It's a weapon. The Audi is very good looking though.
The modern electric car is revolutionary. I myself have a Polestar 2 and love how fast, quiet, comfortable, safe and cheap to run it is. And even then there is something missing. This is a pivotal moment in time that is going to give us, in most measurable ways, better cars... yet it makes me sad. Growing up in the 90s and seeing (and later driving) all the 80s and early 90s cars, the way they felt, drove, made noise... Nothing replaces that. The noise, the way it builds power, the turbo lag, the flutter, the noise of high-rev N/A... Not even new performance cars feel that way - drove the seemingly (according to reviews) GR Yaris and it felt... fine. Afterwards was given a ride in an old WRX STI that was slower and it was much more fun. Keep your old cars, at least one. Keep your 90s Civics, BMWs, Audis, Alfas, Toyotas, whatever else you like - there is nothing coming that will beat the way they feel.
Thank you for still doing these videos. I know this isn't part of the marquee Top Gear material, so perhaps putting these up is a bit of concession to certain types of fans.. but please, please never stop.

Of courses the M5 is the pinnacle of ICE performance sedan engineering. But it all gives me hope that the future can still be fun for those who like to drive.
Yes 👍

Love that M5 CS, any M5 is still the best Family Saloon money can buy 👏👍❤
I own an Audi, and I like Audis but man... this M5 is a beauty.
That Audi is an absolute stunner! Great video.
@@lefuedebout current range is pathetic on most of these EVs.
Yeah
That E-Tron GT. Stunner 👌
The final comments of Chris make me so emotional. Automotive joy will never be the same. Sadly, end of an era.
Everything stops when I see “Chris Harris Drives”
Chris. I bought the B5 RS4 because of you, B7 RS4 because of you, C7.5 RS6 because of you, and now I might maybe get an RS E-Tron GT cause of you 😜 Best motoring journalist ever. Period.
You're hereby instructed to live the rest of your days in an Audi 80, sell your house and leave your life
i love that Chris is already drifting at the start of the vid
I rent the eTron RS for a day, never driven any Sportcar like it and it was the best day ever. The speed was just making my hands shake, I was so nervous. The accelleration was unreal, it didnt feel right for a Car to be that fast. Feels like the start of a Rollercoaster that catapults you, absolutely crazy feeling.
I'd take the M5 CS over the E-Tron.
The M5 drives better, looks way better and is pure understatement.
I'd take a Taycan Turbo S or Panamera Turbo S over both though, or even the CT5-V Blackwing
I like the E tron design more than the Porsche
@@sneaky_krait7271 I don't, the Audi looks way to busy, especially with all the holes and patterns and cameras in the front, the Taycan is cleaner

Dear Chris, that, at the end, was the best answer/decision.
Thank you
There were some incredible shots in this video. Wow
"What a magnificently pointless fast saloon car." That sums up the engineers at M.
Pity, they would be working on batteries rather than V8s and inline-sixes in the future.
They need to sell whatever the majority want in order to survive
Trust me, the M brand will disappear if they won't let atleast the sport cars be combustion engined. Now electric is the fashion, wait for when everything will be powered by approssimatively the same power plant.
4:28 I like how the Audi is thinking it's going to crash and puts the hazards on. Lol
...standard reactive hazards engineered into the car for the safety of others behind...I like this feature and wish it was in more cars...

I'd like to point out that the reason the petrol engine is "nearing the end" is much more regulation than demand. It's an important distinction.
Over regulation. Koeningseg valveless engine are a good direction. But green religion is too big. Not to mention Euro7
You haven’t driven a performance EV have you? Absolutely the only benefit of the petrol engine is the noise.
@@davebway6371 You haven't watched the video, have you?
@@davebway6371 I'll race you with my RX7...from Chicago to Dallas. I'll show you another. Plus involvement in the process for another. Nothing wrong with EVs, but if they are so great why do we have to bribe and force people to buy them?

The e-tron GT is drop dead gorgeous.
Thank you for still doing these videos. I know this isn't part of the marquee Top Gear material, so perhaps putting these up is a bit of concession to certain types of fans.. but please, please never stop.
Nothing beats the feelings that you get through the sounds of an internal combustion engine.
EVs are not cars and never will be.
Surely the heart is missing in EVs !
Yeah true because I don't care if EVs are faster
I love watching Chris drive M cars! Love his excitement
The CS is a perfection, maybe the end of era, like Chris said, it's more fun, with more sensations, things we don't have in electrics cars.
The RS e-tron GT is actually more fun than an RS7, so an electric M5 CS would be roughly the same fun imo.
I think we'll still have 1 or 2 gen of conventional fast saloons and sportcars before the electric revolution is prime to go high performance.
Yet.
sensations? i get that one aspect of the sound bit - no gasoline-explodey sounds (well, not really but to each their own of course) but what other sensations are missing from an sport EV?
@@cabasse_music engine vibrations too at high revs, gear changes, proper pad to disc brake feel, proper hydraulic steering feel with the need for lower power electric steering racks.
