My E39 M5 has all the power you need. 400bhp, rear wheel drive ,manual gearbox and a decent chassis.. These super cars will never be driven more than 30% of their claimed potential.
@@ihateyanks321 I would agree with E60. No manual option in Europe and the E60's pretty crappy build quality aside, the E60 M5 was fantastic. The F10 was the first duff M5 - ugly sound, too much power, not enough traction and it's the size of a school. The E39 was perfect though.
Hello, Harry. The key is a ‘display key’. The car will also come with a conventional BMW plipper and a ‘blade’ key. BMW also offers an app called ‘Connected Drive’. Hope that helps!

Hmmm...for the same money as the M5 I can get a decent 4 door like a Quadrifoglio, an Evoque for the GF and have enough left over for a few charlie fuelled weekends!
I’m a BMW owner and a fan, but I got to admit that Project 8 is quite special. I’m glad that you got rid of the obnoxious rear spoiler. Now looks so pure.
You get two keys one electronic brick and the other a normal smaller one same as on my i8 Roadster - the bigger one I never use as it's frankly a bit embarrassing !
M5 is quicker around a track than a DB12. But yes, it's no good despite everyone else saying how amazing it is and the M5 is one of the best cars ever built. M5 is not a drag machine, it's lateral stability and grip is the best in class, it even beats the RS6.
F10: nice. Project 8: nice! There's nothing like a Project 8. It's a bespoke car. With an F10 5-er, an Alpina or a 911, you'd always be wondering if you'd bought the wrong one. With a Project 8, for a collector's car, it's unique - it's useable, involving and very fast! Great and entertaining Review as always Harry. Many thanks.
The project 8 is one of the most fantastic cars visually and I am sure it's an absolute riot to drive. Certainly up top on my 'dream garage' list. Great video as always
The two cars aren't really directly comparable. As Harry Himself pointed out, Project 8 is the size of the 3-series, and therefore, smaller, lighter and more agile than the M5. Added to which, Project 8 was designed to be more track oriented than the M5. Anyhow, he sure moaned a fair bit about the car, which has (rightly or wrongly) received a lot of praise elsewhere!
We are comparing a special vehicle with extremely limited production with a car that anyone can go and buy to any dealership. I don’t think it even makes sense. The M5 was, is and will be one of the best 4 door performance saloons ever. Period! And for 50.000£ less
Bless you Harry. You stir up my farfetched dreams of one day having a garage full of desirable cars just like yourself. This of course will never come true but it's still a thrill to see you living the dream for me. 😍👍

@@RS-nq8xk I agree. The E39 M5 is one of the best cars ever made, in many 'experts' opinion, and many car fans too. Cars which try too hard, don't age well.
As a base M5 owner I know what you mean but I love the ‘Sleeper’ thing, the day to day practicality and the fact I paid much less than half of the Project 8...oh and the steering wheel is on the correct side. The Project 8 is a piece of exotic art, never sell it!
In fairness the older Jags do too. I was lucky to get my hand on a (at the time) 3 years old XF-RS. These were limited build and I still got it for less than a new Audi A4. Totally converted me to a Jag addict 😅.
No one in their right mind would pay list for an M5, so bad, but not quite as bad as it seems. But still at a year old and around £60k it makes much more sense.
After almost 5 years in my Giulia Quadrifoglio I wanted to swap for something with more space and more luxury, but still quick and engaging. I tested a 2 year old F90 M5, the non competition version, and I was left quite stunned at how dull I found it. Impressive but not fun at all for me, an engine lacking character and dead steering. After looking at some other cars I surprised myself and went for a 2020 F Pace SVR. I'm loving it so far. The engine has so much character and it's much more agile than you would think, loads of space and comfort too. It's so much more of an event. The cabin is very similar to the Project 8, would love one of those but it's way out of reach for me.
Have to agree. BMWs just don’t seem special. No matter the power, the tech etc there’s something lacking. It’s the difference between a premium and a prestigious brand.
All the Beemas look very samey. The Jag looks different both inside and outside. At least the Audi's RS gets a wide body... This is a bit too stealthy for something that has a competione badge.
Yes it has the power and the go but they have lost what a M car is .... im not a jaguar fan but i must say your Project 8 is something special. No play station dash sound's like thunder and clearly a better drivers car. One of the best M car's ive driven is the old 535 M with the straight six on throttle bodies and the dog leg gearbox.
I love Harry's reviews -knowledgeable, enthusiastic, straightforward and honest; BUT I've noticed a lot more ads breaking in recently and I have to say, that whilst we al want to make money, it's getting really tedious and a bit of a turn off.
Two cars that are evidently developed in different classes and with different purposes in mind. The project 8 is in the M3 class and geared for track use, the M5 is meant to be a fast daily driver. Btw, if you can get an X5 + a sports car for the same cost, what can you get for the far higher cost of the project 8? 😊
I knew the switch to 4WD would bring some Audi numbness to the M5, BMW have been making cars that are impressive stats wise but have been lacking in drivers involvement for a while now (M2 aside), they are too busy trying to please everyone that they are now abandoning their core principles, M cars always put the driving experience first, now they seem to put the Tech first and it’s completely diluting the brand, this is the first time in my life that I’d rather have an E63 AMG rather than an M5, at least the AMG has character and soul, love your honesty Harry, most reviewers wouldn’t dare say anything bad about the M5 because of its cult appeal but if people don’t speak out then we will end up losing the M cars of old and just end up with More Audi’s
@@TheDoosh79 They should know what car they want to be selling. They have very good test drivers, they can set up the car properly! There's also a problem with speccing the car. Madness!
Owning a E30 and E34 (both not M cars) where the steering is immaculate and responsive, I would hate driving the newer BMW's. Jag all the way here, such a nice car! My dream car still being the E34 M5 Touring... Very nice review Harry, keep these coming.

Your idea of the X5 and perhaps something like an E46 M3 is looking like the smart alternative. Now let us know what you think of your new V 12.
The e39 will always be the perfect m5. Sleek looks, manual gearbox, great exterior and interior, beautiful v8 sound and engine characteristic. A timeless car
VAT is 20%... were you expecting it to be less just because the price? What's worse is the road tax will be inflated for like 5 years because the car is over £50k (or whatever the figures are)... that's a deliberate wealthy tax.
I do kinda like putting those functions on the key fob tho- you can be reasonably assured then they will still work in 10 to 20 years time when the app isnt supported anymore
I really like Harry’s reviews, unfortunately I can’t comment from a personal perspective as I’ve only driven the E39 M5, but all I will say is it’s just Harry’s opinion, Joe Achilles seems to absolutely love it and I’ve driven cars Joe likes before and normally agree with his reviews, hopefully one day I’ll find out for myself as far as the M5 comp goes 👍🏻
I used to really like his reviews Ian but he comes across more and more like a rich playboy telling us plebs that all the (semi) affordable cars we could maybe dream of at a stretch are rubbish compared to the really special limited edition things he can afford... I agree re the Joe Achilles comment too - I thinks he's 'one of us' and therefore I respect his opinion more.
In the past I too loved BMWs. But they have sold their soul to the devil of conspicuous consumption, and the people who drive the current ones have never known how exhilarating the driving experience can be in an engaging car. Hell, today's Bimmer pilots can't even drive manual transmissions.
I agree. The wheel arches are no longer that flared. After 15,000 miles though ... I really like it, it’s lacking in looks and perhaps a bit in sound (compared with aftermarket exhaust GT500 that is). It’s still a drivers car, it handles way better than expected, but it’s heavy ... need to brake earlier than the rest of the car give impression of ... weight is hidden till you brake hard. Steering is a bit lack luster ... but the totality of the car make it all worth it. Yes the fan keep going for a long time ... they don’t want the turbos to fail early. Just fans are louder than most car engines :) seats are awesome ... The key is a bit pointless .. connected app does it all anyhow, so just use the smaller key instead. I do love the fat steering wheel, but agree it’s numb ... precise but missing the steering from the M3 E9x
The fans will be going as the turbos are watercooled so it'll run air over the low temp radiator. Also the pumps for the cooling will run too. They do that to not coke up the bearings in the turbos. Particularly important when they run THAT hot in the V.
I much prefer my E34 M5 over my F10 M5, the latter is seriously quicker but lacks the feel. Seems BMW have moved further away from a real driving experience with the F90
I feel there is a bit of bias here, but also is a generation thing. The younger buyers love the new gadgets and the specs and the fact its the fastest thing out. The older buyers like a bit of more connected feel less electronics and dont mind that the car is not as fast as a tradeoff. I enjoy the new M5 because of its stealth and no drama to pass pretty much everything on the road.

@@DaleSteel why on earth would you buy a 5 series as a dedicated track car? For anyone spending the majority of their time on public roads, the Alpina's suspension makes much more sense. I can understand a very small subset of BMW owners wanting a no compromise track suspension, but the Alpina should be the degault choice for those wanting a "performance saloon" with the M competition cars being more akin to limited edition track toys.
Harry was wise in comparing the project 8 to the new M5 competition, neither are "traditional" performance road cars
Imagine the bills this thing will start throwing up a few years down the line.
If it is anything like my F10 then no issues after 4+ years and 44k Mile.
Issues shouldn’t show up at 44k miles. It’s 100k, 150k... etc
Well,if y dont have the money, just stick with a Opel or something.. :)
That's why so many people rent their cars from the finance company these days. Also why so many nobbers are driving cars they couldn't have dreamed of once.
70k miles is the magic number for BMWs. When it hits 70k, get rid.
Project 8 for me all day long and for Harry by the look on his face. Great video, thank you.
The wheels on the M5 are gorgeous.
smh
Great content yet again Harry; lapped up the written reviews at Evo and really enjoy these video reviews. I’m in my thirties and I live my motoring dreams vicariously through knowledgeable and insightful reviews like these - I can’t stand content by rich kids without a clue. Kudos for dropping £168k on a Jag too.... wow!
Thanks for kind words. Only dropped £162k on P8, not £168k, so not so bad..
;-)
Excellent, dinner time viewing for tonight in a bit, perfect timing :)
Very interesting review.
I had the M5 Comp as my current favourite BMW without having driven one based on reviews of many.
This has turned my world upside down :)
Thanks Harry
Drive one and tell me it doesn't make you smile !
Finally someone who comes down on the HORRIBLE new BMW instrument designs. Its twrrible! I want the round dials ans red needles as the M3 E36!
my m5 same as this but a 2019 model they have the nicer round virtual dials and i saved a lot of money
@@leekindell9937 Yes pre facelift that is so nice and classic!
They really do suck!
Great videos Harry - keep them coming! Currently down from Scotland for a few days and drove to meet up with friends in Charlbury. Daughter: “this is the best roller-coaster road ever”. Me: “Funny you should say that...”
These are nice but we all know the E39 was the last true M5...
E60?
My E39 M5 has all the power you need.
400bhp, rear wheel drive ,manual gearbox and a decent chassis..
These super cars will never be driven more than 30% of their claimed potential.
100% right
Hell yes
@@ihateyanks321 I would agree with E60. No manual option in Europe and the E60's pretty crappy build quality aside, the E60 M5 was fantastic. The F10 was the first duff M5 - ugly sound, too much power, not enough traction and it's the size of a school.
The E39 was perfect though.
Harry has such a great way of presenting the cars . Long videos seem short . This again is brilliant. If you have 100k plus to splash about.
The M5 has always been a high performance executive saloon whereas the Project 8 seems more like a track car.
Yeh spot on mate he should be comparing the project at to an m4 gts or cs not an m5. The m5 is probably a closer competitor to an xjr
You get into one of these feeling jaded, and you get out of it feeling "Stunned!"
The newer BMW's just leave me cold. I couldn't care less how good they are.
Front = Bugs Bunny eating a pair of ass cheeks!
Harry I miss your car reviews in Evo Magazine but thank God you have these video reviews. Cheers 🍻 for another great video.
Hello, Harry. The key is a ‘display key’. The car will also come with a conventional BMW plipper and a ‘blade’ key.
BMW also offers an app called ‘Connected Drive’.
Hope that helps!
Just give me a fucking key
Harry started smiling when he got in the Jag. That says it all.
Even big H can’t make a BM sound interesting.. dozed off before he got out of Burford..
It's all the faffing about the settings I was nearly in a coma. I'd love it to be big and scary all the time 😀
Styling is a bit numb and boring. 70s and 80s BMW will always be classy.
Oh and project 8 I'd pick easy
I scrolled to the Jag comparison, that woke me up 🙂
@@iangillett2488 boy it sure did 😀 it could be a tonne heavier I'd still pick it. It has charecter and I can't believe I said that being a classic car guy.
Oh and also listen to his driving impressions and words compaired to BMW Love, wild, enjoying.
This thread put me in coma.
I always enjoy the opinion of Monsieur Metcalfe. A mass produced BMW vs a limited edition of a pure British spirited Jaguar. Naturally, the Jag wins, especially for those who value art vs mass industry. A true pleasure to watch your vlog Monsieur Metcalfe. Merci Monsieur
I was thinking about a cheap four door run around like a Mondeo but you may have changed my mind...
Goaty you should watch old top gear episodes instead, you can feel like you have throwaway money
Goaty Orion 1.6i Ghia? Made me feel like a king when I was 17......30years ago. The only problem was, everyone else thought I was a complete knob head👍
Hmmm...for the same money as the M5 I can get a decent 4 door like a Quadrifoglio, an Evoque for the GF and have enough left over for a few charlie fuelled weekends!
What about a Montego... they run and run but their bodywork lets them down. Still, you can always sort that out with some chicken wire and filler...
Is Cadillac CT5-v Blackwing avail in UK? 650 bhp, awd, will run with these and has styling that is at least as nice.
I’m a BMW owner and a fan, but I got to admit that Project 8 is quite special.
I’m glad that you got rid of the obnoxious rear spoiler. Now looks so pure.
The massive "intelligent" key has to be the most ridiculous thing I have seen in a car for quite some time...
Imagine walking around with that in your pocket. People would think you had a hard on.
Many thanks.
it's a rattle can, you'd go deaf driving it across a pebble
The project 8 is one of the most fantastic cars visually and I am sure it's an absolute riot to drive. Certainly up top on my 'dream garage' list. Great video as always
I’ll take the project 8 all day long ,that purple 😍,nice one Harry 😉👍
I've come to accept that Harrys smile tells me more about the car than 1,000,000 words from Harry.
I would like to add that you can now use your phone to unlock the car or you can use the 2nd smaller key.
Good to know and what I would do as an owner. That monster key was a right pain to pocket!
Harry's garage would be a pain in the arse for a back pocket.
You didn't need to explain Harry .. Your face said it all as to which one you like the most .. great vid as usual ..
I thought that too. Also can you still actually buy a P8?
How many people actually spend their own money to get in an M5....love the laid back relaxed Harry in the P8 ...keep it up.
Harry looks healthier now than he did in the early videos.
I wonder if he tweaked his diet or something.
Watch for a "Harry's Body" channel...
Haircut?
The eyes. Look at the eyes 👀
He looked a bit scarecrowish in those early vids.

We are comparing a special vehicle with extremely limited production with a car that anyone can go and buy to any dealership. I don’t think it even makes sense. The M5 was, is and will be one of the best 4 door performance saloons ever. Period! And for 50.000£ less
It's not just me then : )
Project 8 every day of the week over the M5, the 8 is proper petrol head weapon
Bless you Harry. You stir up my farfetched dreams of one day having a garage full of desirable cars just like yourself. This of course will never come true but it's still a thrill to see you living the dream for me. 😍👍
Yawn! It's just so boring looking. That car is lacking emotion or passion. The Project 8 is entirely more special.
Some people will prefer the 'sleeper' looks.
The Project 8 looks too much for me personally, more does not mean better.
Nik Gnashers
There’s a difference between boring, lacking passion and a sleeper.
@@maskito4256 E39s, E60s, hell even Accord Euro Rs we have here look civilised and it is like 4000 times more impressive looking. And looks good 20 years after they were made too...
@@RS-nq8xk I agree.
The E39 M5 is one of the best cars ever made, in many 'experts' opinion, and many car fans too.
Cars which try too hard, don't age well.
That’s because you don’t really understand what this car is
As a base M5 owner I know what you mean but I love the ‘Sleeper’ thing, the day to day practicality and the fact I paid much less than half of the Project 8...oh and the steering wheel is on the correct side. The Project 8 is a piece of exotic art, never sell it!
Coming soon, the look on Harry's face when has the Espada back with it's 8K rpm pistons.
Incredible review. Harry is a true master of his craft...
M5 depreciation is breathtaking great as it is
In fairness the older Jags do too.
It’s now almost 2022 and used 2019 M5 competitions are still almost 100k 😐
I kept chuckling during this review.. Brilliant!! Harry is a Genius, just what I needed. :-)
u make the best reviews period
The Project 8 - the BMW may have more power but it will never be as exclusive as the Jag.
Keep your Jag, put that M5 in my driveway please!!
Technology overload
Hyper overload 😂. The key is a damn tablet.
Most people's definition of modern luxury, unfortunately.
I love Harry’s Garage videos but he has got to iron the collars of his shirts! Haha. Keep up the great reviews.
simple, informative and just plain proper analysis
I've had/have both Jaguars and BMW's, my impression when driving them is that you sit on a BMW and you sit in a Jaguar. Great review and comparison.
The F90 M5 looks pretty dry next to that project 8. The E39 and E60 V10 were the hardest looking M5's.
Besides E60 sounded like a supercar rather than sports sedan/muscle car.
Great Vid Harry and thanks. Out of the 2 I know where my money would go and that's the Project 8 by a large margin, looks like an epic car!!
Harry, can you please ask your connections at BMW exactly what was wrong with two round gauges that move clockwise?
Love your vids, just fun to watch and hear you describe these cars from your perspective. Thanks!
All these setup options and tweekery would give me a headache. No thanks.
You set it up once, store it in M1 and M2, and that’s it. Not that headache inducing, really...
@@Anders_HeymSR30 except I couldn't even be arsed to set it up the once. they should just set it from the factory and give you the option of M1/M2.
boomtard
@@TheDoosh79 They should know what car they want to be selling. They have very good test drivers, they can set up the car properly! There's also a problem with speccing the car. It's like "we won't bother, just print all the possible combinations" and let the customer loose his mind chosing the colour of the stitching on the front left and rear right seat bolster separately. Madness!
Owning a E30 and E34 (both not M cars) where the steering is immaculate and responsive, I would hate driving the newer BMW's. Jag all the way here, such a nice car! My dream car still being the E34 M5 Touring...
Very nice review Harry, keep these coming.

Currently running an E46 manual coupe and 2014, 3 series touring, I so wanted to hear the M5 was a bonkers jigger with traditional BMW great feel at the wheel. Having owned previous sedan and touring 5 series had the expectations way high. I felt the E39 had a superb chassis. Thankyou as always Harry for the balanced review. Your idea of the X5 and perhaps something like an E46 M3 is looking like the smart alternative. Now let us know what you think of your new V 12.

Great review. The Project 8 is very special. The M5, I couldn't be arsed with all the setup options, doesn't excite me at all.
Anybody else wince at the amount of VAT in that price breakdown?
Not really its not that much in the netherlands its more than double a mustang gt has a starting price of 120.000€+ for reference
It's a wealth tax. Better than America where the roads are falling apart and working-class people are sleeping in their cars between shifts.
Good point
I love BMW's, I've owned 4 but that Jag is in a different league. And what a noise 👏
In the past I too loved BMWs. But they have sold their soul to the devil of conspicuous consumption, and the people who drive the current ones have never known how exhilarating the driving experience can be in an engaging car. Hell, today's Bimmer pilots can't even drive manual transmissions.
I feel, if you want a fast BMW 5 series with a V8, get the M550i. 67k vs 90+k.
Yes, or go Alpina if you can afford it
I like that the body enhancements were kept subtle but attractive. The M5 is at its best when its style is subtle and elegant, like the E39.
The M5 doesn’t have that sexy mean look anymore, not sure why.
*Only the first 2 are proper M5's ,if it's not built by BMW Motorsport at BMW Motorsport*
*Remember that*
The fans will be going as the turbos are watercooled so it'll run air over the low temp radiator.
I'm afraid so. F10 M5 will still be a classic M5 for me, though, as that engine is a stunner. (and yes, I know it has reliability issues..)
How long have you had it and what miles have you put on? How are you finding the quality and reliability?
Hydorah which M5, E34 or F10?
@@Kevinpayneuk Sorry, F10 I didn't realise you had a whole stable full of them
I feel there is a bit of bias here, but also is a generation thing.
