As much as I like the sound of that, I’m gonna have to assume that the company upon finding out what two of its employees did to a customer, they thought was one of their employees would immediately concede and want to settle before any lawsuit could reach the courts. There’s no reason!either of those people should still have a job or be allowed to walk free at this point.

Karen AND the casually clad big boss both need to be summarily fired. Her for openly chastising an employee (assumed or otherwise) on the sales floor. Personnel issues are not something to be discussed in public. I am pretty sure that is something that should always be handled in private, behind closed doors. Then she crossed another line when she put her hands on him ..... simple assault right there. And THEN, siccing the big guy on OP, again discussing a personnel issue on the sales floor, putting his hands on OP, taking his cell phone, etc. OP should have called the police. There was a store full of witnesses. And then a phone call to corporate should have effectively sealed their fates.

I'm definitely aware of small towns looking suspiciously at outsiders, and every community has their crazy people. But I moved to a small town from Chicago about a year ago, and the people have been pleasant almost to a fault. Again, your mileage may vary, and I feel for you if you've had nothing but bad experiences in small towns.

Small town pettiness and small town kindness can and do coexist. The same town that bullied me to oblivion for being different was also the town that came together for my family to make sure we didn't starve after my step dad lost his job. They shunned us for not being Christian, but they always made a Christmas care box for us to make sure we'd be able to enjoy a good dinner over the holidays. There's something to be said for a community that would make sure that even their least favorite family can survive their hardships.

Free Fruit - Okay, I work in the Produce department of a grocery store, and we do have a bin, where we place an assortment of bananas, apples, or oranges. Basically -
    1. Sometimes there's a bunch of single bananas (why do people just rip off the ones they don't want instead of either finding a smaller bunch, or grabbing the single ones instead?), or -
    2. We get a bag that has a few bad apples, yet the rest are good - if we had it in bulk, like say a Red Delicious, we'd put the good ones in the bulk bin. But, if we *don't* have it in bulk, like say Pink Lady, and there's only 5 apples that are good (and we don't have more bags in the Scan Out/ Recovery bins), Welll -
    3. Oranges (and most other fruit) following in the same path as the apples -
    4. Someone ordered a few too many new fruits, and the old ones aren't selling too good (and aren't at the Rescue/ Reduce Stage) -
We place said fruit in the Free Fruit bin. This is mainly for children to have something to snack on. Sometimes we decorate it up a bit - I like making the bananas look like a fence/ cage, that's protecting the apples and oranges. Now, not to worry, we tend to get credit for the apples and oranges, and there isn't much of a loss on the bananas.
That being said, we try to Rescue if possible, such as the apples - 6 in a weighed pack - over-ripened bananas for banana bread - weighed - and wrapped, and either via weight or count, get a price that's like half the regular price. - $4 apples are now $2 for instance, so, overall, we try to keep the waste down.

It seems to stop kids from stealing cherries and grapes, and keeps kids busy so parents can shop without kids wandering around complaining that they're bored or hungry. Additionally, I've seen grown middle-aged men taking the fruit from the basket which probably keeps them from stealing the far more expensive cherries too.

The fourth story reminds me of something that happened to me very early freshman year of college. Don't judge me until the end. I was standing in line at the cafeteria. Serving us was a man with a dark chocolate complexion and very tightly curled hair that formed a large dome all around his head. Sitting lightly on top of that dome was a baseball cap. One person next to me in line commented on the hat. Another person next to me laughed about it. I said, I guess that's how they wear their hats in Africa." All of a sudden the woman who laughed lays into me, "How dare you! He may be more American than you." I was pretty stoned on good ol' MaryJane, and paranoia kicked in immediately. I was ready to crawl in between the drink dispensers. Fortunately she asked me to justify myself and actually waited for an answer. Fortunately the line moved closer to the serving station, and I was absolutely certain now who was wearing the hat. I was hit by long moments of doubt while being berated, since she should have known who he was too. We were all talking together in his room a few hours ago. I managed to squeak out, "But that's Samuel, he lives on our floor. He's from South Africa." And indeed, as I had realized before her, it was Samuel. I had talked with him a lot in the week or so we had been there and knew this was his first time out of his home country of South Africa. The person who made the hat comment was his roommate, and jumped in to defend me. The liberal outrage directed at me a moment ago was directed at tirade girl (who turned out to be an awesome person). And in case you're wondering, my skin tone varies from pale as a ghost to red as a tomato. And red as a tomato was the color of tirade girl's face, usually a very light coffee color as she apologized. She looked so funny with her almond shaped eyes closed down to slits, I had to laugh and forgive her, with some additional teasing throughout dinner. Oh, and I asked Samuel about the hat when I told him about the incident. He just didn't want to mess up his 'fro. (I didn't really think that's how Africans wore their hats, just a stupid comment).

The manager hauled off and backhanded her so hard she fell. She grabbed her phone to call 9-1-1 and the manager grabbed her phone, threw it down so hard that it shattered and said he was "tired of employees refusing to work" grabbed her by the hair to drag her out of the store shouting she was fired.

There was a picture of him in the managers office as a be on the lookout kind of thing. His pic gave off this feeling of ick that i just couldn't forget. Well she was working front counter and i was working back drive at the time. I had gone up to the front to refill my drink when i saw him walk into the lobby. She's standing there focused on counting out change for a customer and he's just leering at her like she's a particularly juicy burger or something. Well i got the attention of a male coworker and asked him to cover front counter for a bit because "the gm wanted to talk to her in the office." The coworker said yeah sure and walked over to her telling her to head to the back. She headed to the back and i followed after her. When we both got back there she went to ask the gm what he wanted but i stepped in and said i was sorry for lying but i had to get her out of site because HE (i pointed at the picture) was in the lobby. The gm immediately called the police and she looked like she was about to have a panic attack. I asked the gm if she could learn headset and stay in back drive until the police came and took care of everything. Gm said yes and i took her to back drive while the gm headed up front to be there when the cops showed up. Well he had apparently been trying to demand he be served by the girl but the coworker did right and said he didnt know who the creep was talking about. Cops show up guy gets arrested for violating both orders against him as well as a slue of other charges and apparently a couple of warrants. Plus creep gets banned and trespassed. She had to quit a few months later because she was accepted into college a few towns over. Hope creep was sent to prison for a long time and that she's flourishing in life. She was a nice girl.

The electronics shop story: If I were in OP's position, I'd have pressed charges on the management for attempted kidnapping, assault, theft, and racial discrimination. I'd have also filed a civil lawsuit. Why settle for a measly graphics card when you can lawyer up and squeeze the management and company for every cent you can?
The Walmart story: It's actually ILLEGAL to make an employee work off the clock. It's a liability issue and it's also time that the employee isn't being paid for. I work at a Rite Aid and I never help customers when I'm off-duty. We're actually not allowed to help customers when off the clock AT ALL. I can't even so much as direct them to X, Y, or Z section of the store. I've told some customers that whenever they accosted me for help when I'm on my breaks and they got all pissy at me for it. I don't make the rules! Just because I work somewhere doesn't mean I'm always on duty!

Story 2: My local Schnucks has some free fruit (I think oranges, bananas, and apples) located near the cashier checkouts. They also have a table with some drawings that are for small children to color in. No need to be demanding about it.

10 minutes for a milkshake? That's nothing. I once went into a Steak-n- shake, ordered ONLY a shake, and proceeded to wait for close to 30 minutes while watching people who came in after me get their orders first (and every one of those people ordered full meals)... Needless to say I never went back

The grocery store down the street from me had free fruit for a while. It was for kids to take one while parents shopped. They only did it for a little while because people kept wanting other things free instead.

Start banning people like this from stores and maybe they'll eventually learn and behave in public. Or they won't be able to shop anywhere. Win/win either way.

Story 4. Absolutely scorched earth. Assault, theft, kidnapping, and anything else they could make stick.
Story 6. That supervisor needs some charges as well. Reckless endangerment, maybe for what she did at work. Then maybe stalking and/or harrassment for after OP quit.

Story 4. I would have had not only an expectation of them being fired... but also charges of assault, battery, theft, intimidation, and attempted kidnapping. I would also have a lawsuit against them and the company...

Stories 1-1,000,000: I think if someone threatens to get me fired like that, my first response will be "Who are you? Where do you work?" and flip the script on them.

Woolworths in Australia has free fruit for kids, and I remember seeing it in a Coles or two as well, but not consistently. My kids love it, especially the 11yr old.
