I found of you started a request with "I know you don't work here, but if you're not busy, could I borrow your height and ask you to get me xyz off this high shelf please?" And do you know what? Every single man, or tall woman, I asked helped me. Every. Single. One. Not once did I get "I don't work here" or "I don't have time" or just a flat out "no". A group of Japanese friends was coming to visit me, here in Texas. They had the normal layover in Houston and decided to get a bite to eat. They'd never been to the U.S. before... Or any large city with tourists, for that matter. So they were very much experiencing massive culture shock. When they had to make a trip to the restroom they did the normal Japanese thing and left all their belongings at their booth. From what they told me, they didn't get two steps before a couple of the biggest men they've ever seen tell them that they needed to take their stuff with them or it might get stolen. Only one of the guys spoke English understood and that encounter lead to a long conversation and they even helped get them to the correct departure gate. They commented on these massive men with cowboy hats and how kind they were to strangers and how weird it was for them to just strike up conversations with perfect strangers. They were the first face-to-face introduction to Americans and Texans at that. Much different than what they were expecting. Also, they just couldn't get over how much distance they had to go, just in the state. They did determine that Texas is both huge in size as well as the personalities.

It could have gone horribly wrong, then leaving their belongings, if it wasn't for those men, they might have come back to all their stuff being gone! In the UK, when at an airport, we know not to leave our stuff alone/unattended, for airport security reasons as much as anything else, but when we're in cafes, restaurants etc, we can at least leave our coats, scarfs gloves etc at our table. Though we know not to leave handbags or phones on the table, that's just asking for trouble. It's sad that you can't leave things atyour chair/table nowadays. You could when I was little. I used to work for a pizza shop that had a "wall of shame".
Most of the pictures on the wall were from before I had started working there, but there was one series of pictures that got put up because of some suspicious behavior that I witnessed once.
I was working register, taking/handing out orders and taking money. We had a communal tip jar sat next to the register that was decorated with dollar bills folded into origami hearts and taped onto the jar with double-sided tape. One of the folded dollars had fallen down, but we were busy and I hadn't stuck it back onto the jar yet. A couple whom were next in line step up and order. I turned around for no more than 2 seconds to ask the pizza makers how long for the order, and when I turned back, the man had his hand in a weird position on the counter in front of the register, sort of slowly dragging it away from me palm down and partially cupped. Also, the origami dollar that had fallen was gone. So I complete the transaction and they go to wait for their pizza. I went in back, called my boss, the owner, and told him what I had seen. 10 minutes later he's at the shop and we're watching security footage. Sure enough, as soon as I turned around the guy stole the dollar, but I turned back before he got it all the way pocketed and I seen him. His wife had apparently used the same dollar, unfolded, to pay for a soda while I was in the back calling my boss. We put them on the wall of shame. A few days later, a different guy showed up claiming to be the thiefs lawyer and saying that the guy who took the dollar was a prominent pastor at a local church in the area. Like that was supposed to make it better. He said if we didnt take down his picture he was going to sue. We didnt, he didnt, and we never saw him again. I should also mention he paid for his order with a crisp $50 bill that he thumbed off a pile of crisp $50 and $100 bills that could have easily been up to $1000 in cash. Some people are ridiculous beyond comprehension.

Oh the depths some people will stoop to. Here’s a brief but unexciting example. This was before the pandemic and I was in a pharmacy buying medication which I paid for with cash. When I got handed the change I noticed that I had a couple 1and 2 pence coins. I suppose the US equivalent is a few cents. They’re practically worthless as I’d have to collect 100 1 pence coins or 50 2 pence coins just to get £1. While it’s true if you keep all those pennies it’ll eventually add up but it’s a long time to save up.
So, I asked the woman who’d served me if she could put the 1 and 2p coins in the charity pot. (Most stores have them for that exact reason. To allow customers to donate their near worthless coins to a good cause.)
The woman looked at me and apologised because someone had stolen the store’s last charity pot and they hadn’t gotten a new replacement in yet.
So I kept the coins in my handbag and put them in another charity pot in another store a few days later. And I marvelled at how scummy and desperate must someone be to steal £ 3-5 worth of low denomination coins, get them changed at the bank before use. (Technically it’s legal to pay in small coins but it’s frowned upon.)

If a person has shopped for any length of time, they soon realize that many stores are laid out the same. And to find something, they just have to go in the general direction until they start seeing other similar items or related items.

Just to let you know, housecats are both predators and prey, and they know it. They freak when something in their immediate area changes without them noticing it change, as it could easily mean death for them to not notice something approaching them. It's instinct, and quite cruel of their humans to do that to them.

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

As one who has had cats all my life and studied their behaviour I have to agree with Sontar. Pulling the cucumber trick on a cat is cruel. I saw one video of it and got so annoyed it was borderline anger.
Even if you don’t know the psychological process and survival instinct behind the cat’s reaction, it’s still clear as day that is really does frighten the cat.
Why would anyone deliberately terrify their pet that loves and trusts them? It’s not like you can even tell the cat “it’s just a prank, bro!”
I don’t understand humanity. We’re brilliant enough to create whole cities, we’ve used technology to conquer nearly every corner of this planet. We can make heavy metal machines fly through the skies. We can even reach the moon and if we really wanted, Mars.
And yet, we also have the stupidity of “Karen’s” and idiots who torment their pets.

Not 5 minutes after we left the restaurant, a waiter came running out of breasdth , having searched everywhere for us to return our tip. Re: the last story in Japan & the lady telling the manager what a great job the staff did.... having worked customer service (on phones, not usually in person), I know how important it is to give positive feedback -- negative feedback is just too common! I was at the flagship Nordstrom store in downtown Seattle. A young Black man helped me with shoes. I've got humongous feet & Nordy's always has shoes that'll fit me. I was getting ready to move to northern Mississippi, where there's no Nordstrom (big surprise). I told him, and he gave me his card and said to contact him if I was in need of shoes again (this was before a lot of online shopping choices). After we were done, I went to their CS department & asked for a manager, I wanted to give props to this young man. The lady had me fill out a customer service card and I said how helpful he was, even offering help from across the country. FYI: Nordstrom started out as a shoe store, so they still maintain that exemplary service to this day. Sorry so long, but I think everyone should offer positive reviews/feedback when appropriate. Makes a customer svc rep's day so much better!

I have a sort of r/IDontWorkHereLady (/in this case, /Man) story from today. I work for a big media house in customer service. We are completely separate from the newspaper ads department and the actual journalists writing articles, there's a clear boundary. The only thing we do is handle subscriptions and bills. However, everyone had gone to lunch just minutes earlier and I was the only one scrambling to finish a newspaper subscription case one minute before my lunch break, when I heard the doorbell. After me opening, in stormed an elderly couple, where the husband screamed at me "I'LL BE GODDAMNED IF I HAVE TO USE THAT DAMN INTERNET TO PUT IN AN AD!!! HAND ME A PHYSICAL FORM TO FILL OUT!" Usually the ad department would handle this but the couple arrived exactly when everyone had left for lunch. I sort of panicked and just handled them an empty A4 paper for the elderly man to write his ad. I was sort of trembling the whole time, both from "oh god how do I handle this" and extremely low blood sugar, not having had the time to eat even a small snack up until then. Then he went on a 20 minute rant about how the sports articles were "so bad and full of gossip", while standing very close to my face, spitting while talking. I luckily managed to usher them out after what seemed to be an eternity and by this point my blood sugar was really low. Right after they left, my boss came in and asked me why I looked so distraught. I explained the situation and she told me to take it easy and forward this to the ad department. I then went for a light sandwich snack on very shaky legs. After eating, I managed to collect my thoughts for a while in a dark closet in the office and went back to work. Some customers are just so... INTENSE.

Anyway I got so caught up in the lecture because what I was learning was fascinating and the lecturer teaches well. At the end of the lecture I reached down to pick up what I thought was an empty cup to go wash it up in the kitchen and to my surprise there was perhaps a bit less than quarter of the cup of tea left at the bottom!

It's a bad choice to wear a red shirt with kaki pants in target. I had a Karen experience in a Target. Some lady assumed I worked there. She came up to me demanding me to help her. I was being nice and told her I didn't work there. I'm sorry but she needed to find an actual employee. She didn't like that answer. She loudly demanding I get the manager. So she can get me fired. Again, told her I do not work at any target. I'm a customer trying to buy kitty litter. Some employee came over and called a manager. That lady yelled about me to both the manager and employee saying I should be fired on the spot becauseI refused to help her. And to give her my name. Since I wasn't wearing a name tag. Again, manager said she isn't an employee but can I help you with something? That just annoyed her even more. Now demanding corporate number. So she can get all of us fired. I just turned to the manager and told him good luck with crazy lady. I'm checking out now. Just keep her occupied for a few minutes so she can't follow me in the parking lot.

I'm a short person who often has to ask for help getting something from the top shelf. But I ask ONCE, and if I get a "no," then I look for someone else. And if the person isn't an employee, I say, "I know you don't work. here, but you're tall enough to reach that." And employee, or not, I say Please and Thank you.
Not bragging, just pointing out how ridiculous these Karens are.

Just a note: I didn’t know they were called Karens at the time. The term didn’t even exist back then. It’s only in the last year and a half that this designation came into existence.

No asylum. Prison, general population. Let her try it in prison and she'll learn the hard way via wig-splitting or getting shanked

On the rare occasions I have to go to one of the stores around where I live, I simply have one goal. Get in, take care of business, get out. Reduces the risk of a nuthead encounter. It’s worked for years (for me at least)
