- This piece was covered in mold and mildew. Lots of soft, punky areas. I got something out of it, but, was it worth the time? You decide.
Finished in shellac.

I'm not likely to have a turning video next week. I'm about to start on changing from old computer to new and I have a ton of files to move. I'm sure it's going to take days and days! I'm also quite nervous about it so, wish me well, please! LOL!
Phil
Best of luck.
I moved all of my files (including movies) in a couple of hours. The software is really better now. Good luck.
😊
😊
Today I'm watching you in bed on a Friday evening instead of from my bed on Friday morning so I'm a bit discombobulated! That sounded like a windy day at Shady Acres when you recorded that Phil. As always you made something good come out of that ol' bit of wood.
I'm going to save the e-bike videos for when you're wrangling your computer. Good luck, hope it goes well, see you on the other side of the terabytes! 👍
God doesn't make ugly wood!! I like what you have done to show the beauty of the piece. 🙃
Thank you, Frank! 😀
Phil, you may not like the piece that much, but(and that’s a big but), you still do some mighty wonderful work with what you’ve been given! Thank you so much for the video. Scott
Thank you very much, Scott! 😊
All in all , I think it turned out pretty neat ! It's always better to turn than burn . Thanks for sharing Phil
😊
Phil I think you brought out the very best in your work. I think you and papa1947 have the best channels on the. I like to watch you turn a vase once in a while because I can see you are not quite as comfortable doing it. More like me. Good luck on the computer, and keep turning. Thanks
I appreciate it, Dave, thank you! 😊
Good evening, Phil.
Butternut makes a nice wood bowl. Thanks for bring us another turning adventure from Shady Acres Woodshop.
You bet, Ray, thanks for watching!😀
Don't be so hard on yourself Phil this is still a beautiful piece of wood that you turned into art! Pleasure to watch👍👍
😊
You always get out of the wood what the wood gives you, Phil. Listening and watching you make your way through it is what makes your channel so appealing. Thanks for bringing us along! Have fun with your new computer!
Thank you, Greg! 😊
Nice piece. When you do all you can you just stand. You always do the wood the best you an.
You worked hard on that manky piece of lichen covered wood, but you won. A good result, Phil.
Thank you, Richard! 😀
At the very least it's a pleasing shape and has interesting coloration and grain. I still think it's a win!
Thank you, Brian! 😊
I think it’s beautiful! I love butternut! Thanks Phil!
Thanks for watching, Brenda! 😊
Well done Phil, sometimes mother nature says "This is life, get on with it!" and we've got no choice in the matter.
I've just spent days with my wife's new computer, I even spent over 5 hours solid with online support and it's still not working right. It's being packaged up with letters and paperwork and we want our money back. Please God, bring back Windows 7, what a great system that was!
Yes, I love my Windows 7, John! 😊
I still learned from you, as always! You pointed out challenges and how to work with what you have. Even though the piece is not the most beautiful that I have seen you make, I learned a lot about the wood, and how to work with it. Don't view it as a failure, or less than desirable, but rather as a great learning experience!! --Ed
Good points, Ed! 😊
Oh Phil, it may be older or damaged wood, but the subtle grain coloration I find quite appealing. Additionally, it challenged you a bit too, and if you are even a little like me, you still enjoy conquering a challenge. You gave it a chance to be something other than moldy wood. It is a unique and usable piece.
Thank you, Vicki! 😊
You have been an inspiration to me. I try to find the ugliest bizarre piece of wood to turn and bring out its beauty. Wish me luck. I'm submitting 5 weird wood bowls to a jury to be evaluated to see if I'm skilled enough to display in their facility. You helped me understand how to take chances as such by using wood usually relegated to firewood.
Excellent! Good luck! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil another trip into your workshop and a story you have told. Different wood from what you expected and several obstacles in your way, but never the less you did it. It's not all about the finished piece but when they are on display you can tell all the different woods and the problems you had to overcome to finish the pieces. I hope you get your new PC working soon my week won't be the same without my visit to your workshop. Take care Phil.
Thanks, John! 😊 Everything is set up, lots of moving about to get there. Now I just have to let Windows do it's thing and then start adding programs, etc.
Much better than letting it disappear in the fireplace, and it does look good standing on its edge and on its base.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Thank you, Jim! 😊
A new computer with tons of RAM and a good video card will absolutely blow your mind Phil. You'll save so much time in the editing process.
It's got 64 gigs of RAM, four times what my old computer has. Still, I wish it had more! 😊
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop and you need a good CPU. I think Intel is here a good choice.
@@didman1971 I7, 13th gen, I think.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop that's a really good choice.
Have you tried using a file storage unit that just plugs into your computer. Saves on your internal drive but works the same for saving files to.
That's still nice, Phil. You're your own worst critic. That would look good on a table with some live cactus or flowers in it.
Bill
Yeah, that would be a good use for it, Bill! They would hide a lot of the flaws! 😊
I think it was a nice save. So many chonks flying when you were doing the bowl. The crotch feather on the bottom is great.
Yup, the bottom is the star! 😊
Hi Phil, We moved into the farm this past week and the work load is enormous but everyone is making a huge effort to make it beautiful. It is outside of Port Rowan, Ontario about 3 miles north of Lake Erie. We're already planning the wood shop in the barn but it will probably take a year before I will be turning anything. Keep inspiring me.
George
New beginnings, sounds wonderful, George! Just enjoy the process, you'll get there! 😊
An attractive piece Phil and as always fun to watch.
Thank you very much, David! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Valerie.... Wood in all its forms is always interesting to me. Punky wood, extremally hard wood, it is all interesting in it's own way. Nice turning Phil, I enjoyed watching. ... New computer great!!! (get a 43'' monitor, ha, I am watching the buttons on your shirt 11/2'' diameter, omg)... Until next time ... TM
Haha, 1 1/2" buttons, huh? 😊 My old computer has a 28" monitor and I thought that was big. I just bought a new 32" curved monitor for my new computer. You must get a suntan every time you sit down in front of a 43" monitor, Tuffy! LOL!
I think it looks pretty good to me, Phil. Love it.
Thank you, Laura! 😊
Phil, it's ALWAYS a JOY to spend time with you. Although we're not physically with you we are with you in spirit. The piece of Butternut you had was NOT good to look at BUT, in typical Phil, 'never say never' you decided to give it your best shot AND YOU WON. This bowl is brilliant when one considers what you started with & it certainly would make a great 'key bowl' & I am sure many other uses could be found for it. I too would get nervous having to change anything to do with computer files so I feel for you. Good luck with it my friend. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Thank you, Don! Today is the day for the computer switch. I have a good handle on how I'm going to do it, just have to get started! 😊
Doesn't matter what you make. You made it with your own talent. Thank you
😊
Phil to be fair it turned out much nicer that what I thought it would, it was really punky and the bark was in bad shape. So well done for persevering on it, well done.
Thank you, Alan! 😊
Phil, I think you made the best that could be with what you have.
Thanks, Jean!😀
It’s a beautiful bowl, Phil! We all have a little “rot” and undulation in us! And butterbut! It’s very hard to come by here knowing NH. Seven years ago I volunteered to build an ADA ramp for an elderly couple who couldn’t afford to have it professionally built. I was admiring his beautiful butternut trees. The husband scoured his yard to give me a handful of butternuts to plant. That was a “payment” money can’t make. Now I think of this every time I see butternut.
Wonderful story, Daniel, thank you for sharing! 😊
The shape is great -- overall, I think it turned out pretty good -- use as a utility bowl for somebody say a catch all it's just right for. Some pieces are for showpieces and some for work pieces so don't be unhappy about the product is still turned very nice and very useful. Still enjoy your videos thank you for continuing to share.
Great point, Lynda! Yes, it is at least, useful. Thank you! 😊
I think the piece turned out very interesting!
😊
Thanks Phil, Great lesson again. I always use my 100mm jaws instead of the 50mm jaws whenever I can, even with the wood screw. More stability is always an advantage.
Thanks, Bob! 😊
That might make an interesting table clock. 😉
😊
Every piece I've watched you turn has been a Masterpiece, Phil, and this is no exception. If this was on your table at home it would be unique. Nobody else would have a bowl anywhere like it. Don't run yourself down, Mate.
I wish you all the luck in the world with your new computer. I've just got Windows Crap, sorry Windows 10 on my lap top.what a technical error that was!!!
Thank you, Cliff! New computer has Win 11. I have it on my laptop and don't love it! 😊
WOW PHIL u deffinetly know how too make a great bowls.
Thank you, Manjit!😀
Hey you rescued it from the mulch pile stopped the decay process all in all nice turning
Thank you, Rene! 😊
I think that looks awesome,Phil.thanks
Thank you, Jack! 😊
Hey Phil enjoyed the video. Punky wood is hard to work with. Hard to sand and to get a nice finish. Good luck with the data transfer. Used computers daily before I retired. That is one of the things I don’t miss. Have a good weekend. Dan
Haha, thanks, Dan! I'm getting there but, slowly! 😊
This is still a beautiful piece Phil. U always do a fantastic job. Good luck on the new PC 🤞. Thx and take care.
Thank you so much! 😊
I have a fascination with Butternut and I just can't help myself from turning it. Just finished up a black Walnut bowl because all I've been turning lately was Butternut. Good luck with technology I'm terrible at it. Happy turning my friend 😊
Oh, I bet the black Walnut is pretty! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop yes it is and I also love turning that species just as much. The smell of Black Walnut to me is a pleasant smell with a mask on of course. Safety is always first along with education of what I do for the first time on what I'm doing. My biggest problem is I have more wood than I can could ever turn. I think? But if it's a species of wood that I haven't turned. I'm heading out with my chainsaw to get some. Just can't help myself.
Well I like it , its different. Love the shape.
Thank you, Denise! 😊
I am afraid the old saying "you can't make a silk purse out of a Sows ear came to mind" fair play you stuck with it and did the best you could. not read any comments yet so no doubt some people will love it will check now. 😁
Yes, I have a very diplomatic audience, Lewis! LOL!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop we all love you that's why. 😁
Phil I like what you made out a piece of fire wood. You always turn the not so good piece of wood into something awsome. Thanks for the tip on sharpening the mortise tool I have the same one and have been using some of my wife's finger nail emery boards . Will have to find one of those Dimond cards. Thanks again !!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Terry! 😊 I think you will find the diamond card works very easily, just a couple strokes.
It's perfectly imperfect!
😊
You may not like it, Phil, but I think it looks just fine. Not every piece is going to have a shiny finish... or needs to, for that matter. But you know this.
Thanks, Billy! 😊
I think it's awesome! I really like the way it looks...
Yay, thank you! 😊
Hi Phil this piece ofButternut is really wonderful I like the grain and colour and the markings in it I totally love this wood. The bark is awesome it looks lovely. The key, coin live edge dish is magnificent and unique. The finish you used really made the wood and bark stand out I really love it well done Phil. Take care all the best with change over of computers from Amanda xx❤❤
Thank you, Amanda! 😀 Cheers!
Ya know Phil,
This Butternut piece is an example of variety in choice for all sorts of different folks. It’s like a purple car or a royal blue house. Someone loves it…. Right? You might not love this one but, there’s lots of folks out there who may…
True enough, thanks! 😊
I think it's great. Not every piece is going to be museum piece. You did a fantastic job with what you had to work with.
Thanks, Dennis! 😊
Still looks beautiful Phil
Thank you, Clyde! 😀
Well it is a bowl and it shows your determination to make some thing nice! This one looks different and it might be good for storing some odds and ends in it! Anyway well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
Thank you, Al! 😊
I think it's a great unique piece. Would make a great fruit bowl.
Thank you, Mary! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop You’re very welcome Phil.
That piece of wood was quite challenging. You did an admirable job with what it provided and the bark does have some interesting features. I agree, the bottom looks quite nice; I think it would look very cool with a clock movement in it -- the size of the recess is about the right diameter for something like that.
Best of luck with the computer upgrade. I remember when getting a new computer was an exciting event because of all the new features and capabilities that came with the upgrade; it has now become more traumatic than exciting. I will say that upgrading has become less traumatic after migrating to the Apple environment -- the last several upgrades have been really very transparent and painless.
Thank you, Mark! I agree, it used to be fun to get a new computer and now it's just dread to make the change. I'll get it done, though! 😊
Glad to see you kept going to the end, and didn’t throw it in the burning pile. Sometimes we all get that piece of wood that just isn’t the best. But with a lot of determination, in the end it turns out good. Great job Phil 👍. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you, Scott! 😊
It turned out very beautiful! Of you were selling it I would buy it. Thank you for this video!
Thank you! 😊
Patience and determination gave you success unknown to the common man. I had my doubts when I first saw the piece of wood at the beginning of the video. It came out nicer than I imagined it would.
Thank you, Douglas! 😊
A good result from a piece of firewood, Phil. You redeemed it, to show it interesting structure. It will look good on someone's mantlepiece.
Or under it, Richard! 😊
I have carved butternut, looks dull but the minute a finish is put on it, it just looks amazing.
😊
I use a lot of punky wood making my keepsake boxes. What I do is use a watered down poly and apply it to the wood before I get into it. It absorbs the poly and makes it stronger to work with. Maybe apply the sanding sealer to the punky parts and see what happens with the cutting.
Thanks a lot, Cabman! 😊
Brave effort, Phil, but your skill and dedication was insufficiently rewarded this time. I've had my own share of overly-punky wood, lately, and it can be very frustrating. Onwards and upwards, brother.
Thanks, Don! 😊
You took a very rough piece and made it shine. I like it! Good luck with the computer!
Thank you, Steve! Today's the day, I hope to be up and running by dinner time. Not finished, just running! 😊
I don’t know whether this is sad or not take it as you are, yellow bellied sap sucker, I thought I remember seeing this before, but it was around two years ago and I actually just found it, And the same piece of wood came from the same person, Valerie, And I think, if you look in the bottom of the bowl when you hold it in a particular way, you can see your purple birds flying especially you can see the heads and beak,
I have a very vivid imagination , I still think it is a piece of art and it turned out, alright, I’ve actually just watched this just gone 2 o’clock in the morning, I started laying my waterproof OBS flooring yesterday but after lying about eight or nine boards, I twisted my back, I think the word not as young as I used to be, And swinging a piece of 8’ x 2’ flooring grade boarding around it taking its toll on my back, I laid on my settee last night and I fell asleep there. 😂, and yes, I did watch loads of refuse on E-bike, I did think about getting one, the problem is I think my mountains hills will kill the bike within 15” min, So I purchased a HOG instead, I have still got to pick up, it is another reason why I’m trying to get my workshop garage sorted out, I’m even thinking of building a elevator lift in my 4 story Mill , nice one Phil, great piece of art at least it didn’t go on the fire, And yes, I know what it smells like. I’ve had some wood laying around with a lot of mould on it very similar last year., not very good for the lungs,
Wow, take it easy, don't over do it! 😊
Keys, rock collection, just toss 'em in there. LOL
😊
Phil, sometimes it is about the challenge, not so much the results. I will say, you did much more with it than most folks would have. On a different note, I want to thank you for doing the video about the sound you had with your lathe and what you did to correct it. I also have a 1840 Jet and yes mine started making the same noise as yours. I did as you did and that corrected
the issue. I had to tighten my handle a bit mor than you did, but that fixed it. Thanks a lot for sharing that with us, as it made
my issue, thanks to you, a simple fix. The E-bike reviews were interesting, as I ride a regular bike daily.
Great! Thank you, Gerald! 😊
Standing on end & looking at the back, you could cut & put a picture of you & the missus in it. Ty for taking us along
Cool idea, thanks! 😊
Hey, you showed that Butternut who was boss! Turned out pretty nice!
Thank you Phil!
Thanks, Kelly! 😊
Hi Phil...
As others have said... you definitely got the most out of that unpromising piece of wood...
Nice job...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thanks a lot, Andy! Have a great weekend! 😊
Thank you, Phil, for another great video, I saw your 3 reviews yesterday. Lol❤❤❤
Thank you so much, Jeanne! 😊
It's very interesting Phil.
Haha you are so diplomatic, Sue! 😊
Turned out really nice ❤️
Thanks, Diane! 😊
I like it, Phil. Both sides look good. It shows that you can always do a good job with a chunk of wood that is less than ideal. If you look closely at the crotch grain, you can see the feather in it. I just cut a large crotch piece of Honey Locust and then cut it down the middle. I have 2 lovely pieces that each have a feather in the grain.
Sounds very nice, Carol! Enjoy! 😊
Hi Phil, Great work! I really do appreciate your dedication to your pieces. I actually like the color of this wood and the contrast where the wood meets the bark. Always enjoyable to watch your expertise unfold. Good luck with your computer project!
Thank you very much, Susanne! 😊
Phil, I think you don't give yourself enough credit. It's another great looking piece! Art out of firewood is always a good thing, especially in your skilled hands!👍🙂
Thanks, Ron! 😊
Well honestly as you would say , I'm not in love with it lol . But it is nice . Good turning Phil 👍
Thanks, Lionel! 😊
Not the nicest wood but still an enjoyable watch, Phil. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! 😊
I was excited to see the crotch figure in this piece! While it’s a beautiful turn, Phil, it is a little disappointing with regard to wood grain character.
Eight weeks ago I turned a cracked and pithy piece of hard dense wood I still cannot identify. I’d glued and epoxied cracks. Taped the outside tightly when I hollowed it. After taking the tape off, it needed to be refinished because of the sticky residue it left. I went back over and sanded to 800, used sanding sealer, and then micro shine. I even took out a wool bonnet to buff the micro paste. I noticed the lid fitting needed just a tad better clean-up so I reached past my mask to grab a negative rake… POW! The bowl blew in three pieces.
Thirteen stitches in my cheek later, a concussion, nerve damage, and a seven inch scar later I can talk about this stupid mistake. The laceration went clear through and wood chips came out when the cut was irrigated.
Tomorrow is the first time I’ll use the lathe again after this accident. I got an airflow mask now. Every time I hear you say, “Mask and face shield on” I reflect on your reminder. That one, last, itty-bitty micro clean up on a lid setting almost cost me my life had that bowl hit my forehead of eyes.
Thank you for your talents and reminders each week Phil!
Oh, my goodness, Danella! Oh my gosh, this is just awful! And, painful! I'm so grateful it didn't do more damage but, it sounds like it did enough. I know you will be careful getting back on that horse! Just think of how long you went without such a problem. You will be fine, just take it slow and easy. 😊
I like it! Both sides now 🎉
😊
Morning Phil.
I could see it was very punky by the dust that was coming off rather than shavings.
I like the end result end great work getting it to a finished state.
Good luck with your new computer, I don't like the process of moving everything over from one to another either but once it's done you'll be happy.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
I sure hope so, Huw. Today's the day! 😊
...pull your hard drive(s) from your old computer and pick up a hard drive docking station...plug them into the new computer and use them as an external drive...transfer the files whenever it's convienent...
I still like the bowl...whenever you can save a chunk of wood and transform it into something useful, it's a win...👍
Matt
Good advice, Matt, thanks! 😊 I do have a backup drive. It's just that it is huge and takes forever to move everything. Also, lots of my old programs won't work with the new operating system so I have to buy and download, then learn, new software. Not fun! LOL!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 😂😂😂
Well, what I'm suggesting is just use the old hard drive as an external drive...you really don't HAVE to move files...just access them when you need them...
Now, upgrading the programs to run on the new OS...yep, no gettin' 'round those painful learnin' curves...😆
Matt
Watching you produce such lovely work gives the rest of us amateurs hope. Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend 🌞
Cool, thanks, Ray! 😊
It’s still very nice looking.
😊
I had a piece of maple that had a nice little feather inside. The other half is still sitting on the pile. Maybe I'll grab it this weekend.
😊
A silk purse out of a pig's ear. Maybe not, but it demonstrates you can make something from nothing!
As for the computer storage, you may want to consider an external hard drive that you just plug into your new computer's port. Then when you get your new computer you will have everything all safe and secure. Good luck, my friend, and thanks for the great videos!
Thank you, Robert! 😊 I have a new 18 terabyte external hard drive and a new 12 terabyte NAS. I should be good to go!
I'm afraid that I would never have even started to turn this one.
You amaze me when you turn wacky wood
Wacky is as wacky does, Dana! 😊
I just started it, and I see sapsucker holes. That means it's probably butternut. Awesome
There used to be a lot of this wood in Oregon, but those birds think it's quite tasty. In Minnesota, Carpenter ants like to make nests in the trunk. It's just too sweet to ignore it. This is bad, because it's my favorite carving wood. All the beauty of walnut, but it's soft and still holds good detail.
😊
Fine job!
😀
Well, that old log deserved a chance and you brought out some nice features in it. The grain on the bottom really is pretty.
I have to tell you that I've got a picture in my mind of you "slobbering" that sanding sealer on the piece. There really aren't many better words for it. Perhaps slather. Daub or smear really don't convey the idea very well. Because I have a dog who is a champion slobberer, I think your depiction of putting that sanding sealer on gets the message across the best! 🐶
Thanks for taking us through the turning of that difficult piece of butternut. 😊
Hahahahaha, you've made me laugh out loud, Gwynn! I don't usually use that term to describe applying sealer but, I couldn't think of the word slather! LOL!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 😄
I think it's lovley 😊
Thanks, Colleen! 😊
Phil, You took a nasty piece of wood. I wasn't sure what would come of your effort. I think you got the best out of what you had to work with. Good work.
Thanks, Russ! 😊
Love your show! And all those holes are sapsucker woodpecker holes🙂
Yes they are, Betsy! 😊
Woodpecker holes? I kinda like it. It has a funky look to it. That'd be Funky Punky ? ! ?
Yup, Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, Brock! 😊 Haha, Funky Punky, I love it!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Never seen no Yellerbellys around here, plenty of redheaded woodpeckers though, and I've seen that same pattern of holes.
Beautiful bowl, Phil. 😊😊😊
Thank you! 😊
It's interesting. I like it.
Thank you, Shanon! 😊
Looks good from here! Im glad most of the punky wood was able to be removed. Might’ve been better without the bark.
Yes, it might have been, Christine, thank you! 😊
This is the best piece of firewood you have turned to date. Reminds me of being set up for a blind date and told "she's got a great personality". Put a bag over her head and then she's downright pleasant. Honestly Phil, this piece isn't just ugly, its OOOGLY! You know where it belongs.
LOL! 😊
Hello mate, When I get pieces that punky I also use yacht varnish softened and watered down so it soaks in, let it dry and re do until im happy. loved the work put in by you. Keep well.
Thanks, Max! 😊
I like it a lot! You always give a voice to the wood so it can tell you what it wants to look like. Im happy you didnt cut it to be a circle and you managed to keep the bark on it. I love the extra touch that the woodpecker put on the bowl with all those holes! It was a great touch, Im really pleased you left the holes!
Thank you, Phil for another beautiful and unique piece!❤️❤️🤎🤎
Thank you so much, Texana! 😊
Oh come on Phil, there is no bad piece. So the bumps bruises and scars is what makes it 1 of a kind and unusual. Lol. Didn't look bad to me. I like it. It almost looks fake. But good luck on your computer and have s good weekend
Thank you, Bryan! 😊
Fully understand what you’re saying about this piece. I like butternut a lot but can’t seem to find any locally. That double cathedral pattern in the grain is lovely. You weee u fortunate to he given a piece that was pretty well gone. Great job with what you had.
Yeah, this one tried my patience, Doug. Thanks a lot, my friend! 😊
