Could be used for a yarn bowl by putting the yarn end through the hole and then the yarn stays in the bowl while crocheting. Neat bowl with lovely grain. 🥰
I had a chance to watch this video again, ( and glad I did) . The way it was finished was perfect. I didn't realize how it showed off just how spectacular the grain was and it almost slapped my face with the beauty of this bowl. I didn't notice just how beautiful the grain was the first time. Judy needs to be thankful that you were given a chance to turn this bowl. As you said (for all the world to enjoy). ♥ KEEP ON TURNING
I turned a bowl very similar to that once. I discovered inside a big round bug hole, it turned out that a Wood Bee had gotten in was trying to make a nest. The fibers were from the wood and what ever she had brought in for her nest. . It was quite deep and went out the side of the bowl. I also left it alone and made it a natural design feature of the bowl. The wood grain designee and color really stands out on this piece . Couldn't have (didn't) done it better myself. Spectacular results. KEEP ON TURNING
I love it when the natural imperfections in wood are allowed to showcase the piece. Certainly the case here and you have a knack for making that happen. Well done, Phil.
I like this bowl. Has a character hole. I like you rounded in on the lip. Sorry I’m so late commenting I’m on a cruise and get the internet when we port 😂. Thanks Phil for this turning as it is a little different with no live edge. Thanks for the show. Joel
Hi Phil, Loved the bowl with the hole in the side. It occurred to me that it would look amazing if you turned a decorative spindle to insert into the hole, sort of a tribute to the old ladles that were used to dip drinking water from a bucket on the old homestead 🤠
Hi Phil! I like it very much! The final bowl was not at all what I thought it was going to be. You got a beautiful shape and finish on it. Love the grain and figure as well. Cheers, Rick
Welcome back, Phil. Thank you for showing us why spalted poplar is in demand. (I looked up poplar wood for another, unrelated reason.). Is there just a hint of chatoyance on the outside of the bowl? It seemed like maybe I caught a wee glimpse of chatoyance. Do you know anyone who does knitting or crochet? This looks to me like an ideal yarn bowl for knitting or crochet. The hole would be feature instead of a flaw. Many thanks to Judy for sending this.
All that beauty in that little bowl. Love color and figure of the woods. I’d use it as a phone charging station, the hole is perfect to run a cable through. ❤❤❤❤
Hello There! Surprise! I’m here. Did you miss me? 😆 I really, really like this bowl! (Yay F&W!) The more I look at it, the more I like it! It kind of reminds me of Native American pottery. I want to say I could feel good energy from it, but how would that be possible days later.? Well, you know me. You never know. 😂 I’m mostly good. I now am just taking care of my 93 year old dementia Dad. He is going to go with me on my yearly trip to Colorado. He is excited about it. After my mom passed, pretty much all he wanted to do was go on a trip to see “the kids”. Hopefully I’ll see you next video. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼! Take care and have a wonderful week! Phil, I always enjoy your tunings. I like today's turning, it looks great. I've learned a lot watching you. I've used your technique for marking the base for the correct size for mounting it on the chuck. It works great, thank you. Keep turning!
I really enjoy your videos...just say'n. I'm not a wood worker so I may be speaking out of turn but I believe the real artist here is mother nature...you do do a great job of displaying her...just say'n.
That feed n wax really brought out the grain in that wood, really gorgeous! Plus, I'm gonna go where no man has gone before and declare that Phil Anderson is one very smart cookie! You have now been officially accused of supreme mental aptitude. Wear it proudly Phil! 🤓 Rick
Oh WOW, Phil! I love love love this little bowl! The figuring and spaulting are gorgeous and that hole just adds to the character! Its a very beautiful piece! Well done, Phil, thanks!❤❤
Hi Phil what a magnificent piece of wood its beautiful the grain and spalting is wonderful. I really like how you let the wood do what's natural. The bowl is magnificent and unique I love it well turned Phil. Amanda xx
Phil. This bowl reminded me a lot like a bowl I had earlier this spring. The hole went in about 4” in and finally flew apart. I’m glad your bowl did not fly apart. I like projects that have natural defects in them
This is so Unique AND Beautiful. It looks satin smooth as well. Great imagination on your part to help this piece of art emerge from a piece of wood. Very well imagined into reality!
Great to see you back on the stage, you said you had hurt your hands, did you come off your E-bike, I told you about Trail blazing 😂, The Bug 🐛 heard about you putting things on the lathe, what do you like doing?, Spinning them up to see how far you can spin them out, Luckily, managed to get out before you started , 😂, great looking 👀 Bowl , definitely Beautiful grain in that there Bowl, stay safe,

Nicely figured piece Phil. That turned out very well. I did not realize that poplar would spalt like that. On vacation so am a bit behind watching videos this week.

I love it Phil - such a beautiful piece of wood and you made the most of it as always! I love how Poplar wood gives you so much to look at - I have a really big piece of black poplar about 20" diameter x 5" thick you've put me in a mind to make it a natural edge end grain bowl now! Good to see you looking well Phil - all the best!

Holy smokes Phil that is going to be a popular Poplar bowl. I would say that hole was meant to be there and sure adds to it. In the first pattern shop I worked at the boss bought 10 times the amount of kiln dried poplar as he meant to. I hated using the stuff but but this piece you have was meant to be turned. There is some real character in this piece of spalted Poplar wood Phil. This converted into some VERY nice grain & character, character added to by the hole you discovered. Fortunately it did not present a 'hole' lot of problems during turning. I love your choice of Feed & Wax for the finish because I think it shows up the character of the wood SO well. A well conceived bowl mate. Stay well my friend, cheers, Don from South Aust.
What a nice piece of art to be able to display. It might serve other purposes but it doesn’t need to. It is a work of art just as it is. Thanks for bringing out the beauty of that block of wood.
I kept waiting for a bug coming out of those holes. nice bowl at the end you made a good decision about the bevels on the outside, nice bowl looking real nice.
Thank You Phil, Thank You Judy from Woodland California... OOOH a mystery cavern somewhere inside???...At 16:20 I was expecting some big ole black legs to come crawling out of that mystery pit...I was thinking Phil (Oh no here it comes). In machining, sharpening drill bits are only very hard the end 2+ inches. Much softer as they are ground back. Could this be the case with your shorter gauge having lost its hardness with so much grinding back giving the impression the wood is much harder than it really is? (just a thought)...Another FUN turning today Phil and as always I look forward to your next adventure (please take care of those thumbs) TM
I was expecting something nasty in that hole, too, Tuffy! The problem with my short gouge is, the fixture that holds it for sharpening has a knob that tightens down on the flat on top of the flute. The gouge is now so short, the fixture fits back onto the round shank, not on the flat. It's difficult to tell if I have it in the fixture with the flute straight up. I can mess with it and get pretty close, but, it's time has come! Thanks, buddy, I'm glad you enjoyed today's video! 😊
Very unique shape Phil. An awesome piece with a hole, so neat!! I liked when you were doing the excavation into the holes. Kept expecting something to jump out.
Good to hear your voice Phil. There’s so much to see in this bowl and I love it! It has beautiful color and grain. Lots of charm in the imperfections. I always wish I could hold and feel the pieces especially when you describe how smooth they feel. Take care of those thumbs!
Beautiful bowl Phil. I was hoping you would find a lady's diamond ring or a civil war bullet at the bottom of that hole. Looked like it might have been a hidey hole for some small treasure. Great job, I love it.
Always enjoy spending time with you Phil 😊. Beautiful little bowl. Amazing looking grain pattern. Thought for sure you would find a bug in that hole. Thanks for sharing.
Look at those grain patterns! Had another turner say that Poplar wasn't good for turning. Obviously, he has never gotten a piece as beautiful as this.! I like turning poplar it darkens up as it ages and looks lovely.
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil great to have you back so me week is complete again. A beautiful bowl I suspect it is one of your favourites, due to all features created by mother nature. Hope your thumbs heal up soon they did look swollen and painful. 👍👍

Haha, I did too, Laura! 😊
Good to hear your voice Phil. There’s so much to see in this bowl and I love it! It has beautiful color and grain. Lots of charm in the imperfections. I always wish I could hold and feel the pieces especially when you describe how smooth they feel. Take care of those thumbs!
Thank you, Susanne, I'm really glad you like it! Thumbs are much better, workin' on the next piece! 😊
Beautiful bowl Phil. I was hoping you would find a lady's diamond ring or a civil war bullet at the bottom of that hole. Looked like it might have been a hidey hole for some small treasure. Great job, I love it.
Thanks, Jerry! That would have been cool! 😊
Man, that has some figure that I didn't see af first. Awesome looking bowl. Perfect choice in finishes, too. Well done, Phil!
Thank you, Steve! 😊
Beautiful work Phil.
Thank you, Bennett! 😀
Always enjoy spending time with you Phil 😊. Beautiful little bowl. Amazing looking grain pattern. Thought for sure you would find a bug in that hole. Thanks for sharing.
So did I, Scott, so did I! 😊
Good to see that your back turning. And only 1 week off. Never thought about Poplar but it looks great.
Well, this one is alive with spalting, Rick. I think it's rare to get figure like this in Poplar. Sure surprised me! 😊
Look at those grain patterns! Had another turner say that Poplar wasn't good for turning. Obviously, he has never gotten a piece as beautiful as this.! I like turning poplar it darkens up as it ages and looks lovely.
Exactly! 😊
Very nice the bug holes and the hole in the side a lot of character to a beautiful bowl.
Thanks, David! 😊
Beautiful. Love the figuring.
Thank you for commenting! 😊
I like that bowl ... kind of all over the place! Another fine job Phil.
Thanks, Joseph! 😊
Another interesting piece Phil that quirky shelf is filling up, subtle colours and unusual grain patterns, good job Phil. 😁
Glad you like it, Lewis, thanks! 😊
Holey poplar, Batman. That's a cute bowl. Thanks
Haha, thanks, Garth! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil great to have you back so me week is complete again. A beautiful bowl I suspect it is one of your favourites, due to all features created by mother nature. Hope your thumbs heal up soon they did look swollen and painful. 👍👍
Thank you, John! Much better now! 😊
Welcome back, Phil! Cute little bowl. Per usual, you remind us that beauty does not equal perfection. A bowl with hole can be beautiful, too. Thanks!
Sure enough, Greg! 😊
