- A few weeks ago I turned a sequoia (redwood) bowl, cut from a large log. A lot of you requested I do it again but this time turned the other way up so it had a natural edge. How did I get on? Well you had better watch and find out. Will it be an Unbelievable Redwood Transformation?

That is beautiful, the fact that you saved the branch jutting out gives it so much more personality.
Thanks Tessa, it would have been a lot easier to loose it but where is the fun in that 😀, all the best, Mike
These two bowls are fantastic. You really brought out nature's beauty in them. As far as that log cabin goes - they'd both go great in the living room, with either of them being used as a fruit bowl.
Haha thanks my friend 😀
Beautiful bowl I love the knot left in. It looks like it was starting to be a handle or something. Congratulations on all your subscribers and I’m glad to be one of them
Thank you very much Dave, must admit I have started to look for a piece with a longer branch coming out to do just that
Isn’t nature wonderful, your vision and talent make for another gorgeous piece. 😊
Thank you very much Bev and you are so right, I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with pieces like this 😀
Your work is not only of the highest quality, it is beautiful too.
Wow, thank you Mick 😁
Incorporating the branch area was genius! This beautiful bowl looks alive.
Thank you very much! 😀
The wood whisperer strikes again. Amazing work.
Haha thanks Bruce 🤣
Yup, my favourite thus far. Just shows that bowls do not have to be symmetrical, but can flow with nature beautifully. Exceptional vision made real - well done sir.
Thank you very much Neil, I love turning pieces like this and when the grain is this good it's the icing on the cake 😊
This piece is spectacular!! The branch really tells the story that this was part of a tree. I really enjoy the sanding montages. It does give the impression that it’s a lot of work, but in a quick, entertaining way.
Thank you very much Ted, I was wondering when someone would mention the change in sanding video. Thanks for the feedback lol
I'm pretty sick right now but still watching you make beautiful art.
Sorry to hear that Nana, I really hope you get better soon, all the best, Mike
It is really cool seeing similar blanks turned 2 different ways. I can see why folks tend to go to live-edge for crotch pieces, and why woodturners like them so much. Also, my wife thinks that it is hilarious that woodturners fight over "crotch" pieces.
Haha thanks Jerimiah, just wondering if I would fight for a nice crotch, probably lol 😂
I like the natural bowls. I also love the two tone of the wood. Wow wood turners have to have so much patience. I enjoyed watching you today for me it was very educational and fascinating.😊❤
Glad you enjoyed it Deborah 😀
W O W, this turned out to be just stunning! I’m so glad that you left the natural edge.
Me too, I just love the way it came out 😀
The General Sherman Sequoia in California, at 2200 years old, has the most wood (by column) of any tree on Earth- this piece is a regal representation of the beauty of these trees beautiful work Mike😊
Thanks so much Judy, they are the most beautiful and amazing trees 😀
Stunning.. I’m a Redwood, so this piece is extra special ❤
Haha good to hear 😁
This has got to be a "Braw +"......you have taken it up a notch with this half of the log......thanks for sharing
Haha thanks Andrew 😊
Mike really glad you turned it this way, I agree with you this is my favourite. Leaving part of the branch was a great idea.
Glad you enjoyed it Paul, the branch made it quite a bit harder than the first one but so worth the effort. 😀
The moment the shellac goes on it comes alive. Another great piece Mike, beautiful 👍
Thanks, and I completely agree, this one was just so beautiful 😍
Both bowls were beautiful, the one with the live edge is my favourite too. Congrats on reaching 20K.
Thanks so much Cara 😊
It's really beautiful. The grain, the colours, wow!!!
Thanks Paul, come for a closer look, ther grain is just amazing! 😍
Your reaction is better then anything I could even think about saying. Congrats on the 20K🎉
Haha thanks Teresa 😀
This is a lovely bowl! I do agree, that this natural edge bowl, is nicer than the other.
Thanks Stephanie 😀
I thought ur first bowl was beautiful, but this piece of live edge Sequoia is just gorgeous & to leave that knot in place was brilliant 👏 l really do enjoy watching & listening, whilst u create such beauty 😊
Thanks Karen, it made the turning quite a bit harder but so worth the effort 😀
I loved the first sequoia bowl, and this one is equally beautiful, leaving the high side of the know was the right thing to do, loved it
Hi Rena, I'm glad I left it as well, it made more work but it was worth it! 😀
A beautiful work of art, stunning. Love the wood grain and color. Thanks for sharing all your hard work, on both sides of the camera.🌿 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you so much 😀
😂gorgeous again. Mike you are so talented. The way you turn a lump of wood into a fine art piece is amazing. Congratulations on the 20k subs you will be at 200k subs before long. ❤
Thank you so much Shelley 😀, that make take a little while but you never know!
Absolutely beautiful wood. I always love uncovering what’s hidden inside. Very nice job.
You and me both! Best part of the job and it never gets old 😂
Thank you so much for listening and turning a natural edge. It turned out ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! Just look at all that beautiful natural beauty created by nature ❤
Thanks Mary, I'm glad I did what I was told as well 😂 I do love this piece, there are a few more pictures on my Instagram and Facebook pages 😀
@@MikeHolton I don’t do Facebook or Instagram. I’m sure they are amazing pictures
@@marybethhuson295 that's ok, you can see them here, no need to sign up ko-fi.com/mikeholton
❤ love the natural edge finish, nice to see something clever done with the knot as well. Out of the two bowls this one is definitely my favourite. Thanks for sharing again Mike.
You aer welcome Colin, I do love this one, the knot made life a bit harder but definitely worth the effort 😊
That piece is amazing Mike, now that is what we turn wood for!!!!!
You are so right Steve, I kept on getting distracted by the grain, it really is that nice!!
I love a sequoia when alive, and it's stunning when dead too!
It really is, I've just bought two more pieces of this 😁
I love the wavy colors of the grain of this wood and you picked the perfect finishes for it. You really picked out the perfect location to cut the natural edge of the bowl Mike and I was a little worried that a piece of that branch was going to be too loose and pop out, but it was joined in with the rest of the piece very nicely. Spectacular bowl!
Thanks, this was so much fun to turn 😁
I love Sequoia wood when turned with skill. You have shown your skill Mike with this half of the the same crotch as the 'sister' bowl. Leaving the knot was a touch of genius I think & as I said in my opening, you have handled & preserved it with great skill & sensitivity. The ripples from the crotch look amazing too & add a touch of class to the already beautiful grain. An amazing piece & I think with the knot & the natural edge put this just ahead of its 'sister' bowl which is also so beautiful. Well done my friend, Don from South Australia.
Thanks so much Don, I really try to work with the wood to keep as just of it's character as possible. I can force it into any shape I like but it would never be as good. All the best, Mike
Another two beautiful bowls Mike, the rippling really makes the bowls pop,the way it goes through deeply into the heart wood is brilliant.
You are right about that, I could not believe how deep they went and I'm so glad they did, all the best, Mike
That sequoia was a great investment. Both pieces are absolutely beautiful. I love the live edge you left on this one though. Great job as always!!!
Thanks William, I still have two more pieces from this to turn 😉
Gorgeous 😍! Yes, I think it is more beautiful than the first one. But they are both amazingly beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
Wow, that really is beautiful and so unusual with the way the branch goes up the side. I also love the way it’s finished and it looks as smooth as silk
Thank you so much 😀
I really admire your abilities to bring out the best of the grain.
Thanks Stephen 😊
Love it. The branch protrusion makes it absolutely unique . Shame it is not the 20K give away, but who would not want to keep such a beautiful piece.
Haha I'm on making the 20k bowl now and if it does not go well it still might be 😂
Woohoo! 20k! Nice work. Beware the invisible spinning knot. From now on, I'll tell my people I'm putting blue tape on my tool rest, meaning "go no further, buddy". Lol
Haha, it works I promise lol. Honestly I just could not see where it was and the last thing I wanted was a rap across my fingers from it 😂
Gorgeous! The grain is stunning and those ripples are mesmerizing.
Thanks Karen, I completely agree! All the best, Mike
That wood is amazing, love the colours and grain pattern and the shape of the bowl is very unique
Thank you very much Donna 😊
😍 stunning Mike, and definitely the second bowl edges out the first 😉 but both amazing in their own right.
I loved that someone called it a lava bowl as it does look like lava running down.
Another masterpiece Mike, thank you 🤗
Thanks so much Fiona and this is certainly my favourite of the two although the grain on both is just amazing. I think I'm going to refer to it as the lava bowl from now on, that was such a great idea. Talk soon, Mike
Really beautiful wood, beautifully turned and finished.
Thanks Duncan 😀
I could look at that piece for days the colours and the grain ripples etc are just amazing and I really love what you did to bring out their beauty
Thanks so much Julie, you are so kind 😊
24:32 It's a glimpse of the inside of the tree, the history of it's growth; so inspiring.
This is one of the best things about working with wood 😀
Wonderful. I am amazed by your ability to see the final piece from the start.
Thanks, just experience I guess 😀
This is great - a beautiful end product, but the commentary on your thought process and why you are doing things the way you did was hugely helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it Steve, I try to gave as good a picture as I can about what is going on and what I intend to do. I'm hoping its the nest best thing to having you next to me while I work. All the best, Mike
These two bowls are a fascinating pair! I like both of them, but the live edge is so gorgeous, I love it. For me, the fact that you left the branch in which "explains" to the viewer why the colors are the way they are is a big reason the live edge is my favorite of these two.
Congrats on the 20k+ subscribers level!
Thanks so much Susan and thanks again for your endless support 😀
Stunning Mike my favourite so far.
Thanks, there is something about this one I just love 😀
Amazing piece of work. The wood grain is beautiful. I've learned so much watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much and that is so good to hear, all the best and thanks for your support, Mike
Absolutely beautiful. Love how it looks next to its sister piece too.
Thanks so much 😊
Simply lovely. I thought the first bowl was wonderful, but the asymetry of this one adds so much more interest.
Thank you very much Victoria, this one was a lot harder than the first but so worth the effort 😀
Another beautiful bowl from that log. That reactionary wood is great.
Thank you very much Doug, the grain is just mind-blowing!
Definitely a unique piece! Beautiful!!!😎👍👍👍
Thank you kindly, the grain in this is just beautiful 😀
Yet another marvellous looking bowl, lovely grain.
Thanks so much 😀
The colors! 😳 Both bowls are amazing!
Haha I know, it's a bit beautiful 😀
A couple of beautiful pieces. I turned a bowl once for my woodwork CSE back in the 1980’s. My woodwork teacher actually did most of it. That’s probably why I got a half decent grade 😂. I’d love to have another go one day. Keep up the great work. 😃
Hi George, you sound similar to me, I did a chess set for mine (1985) and then only took it up again when my wife bought me a lathe for our wedding anniversary nearly three years ago. It's never too late my friend
Mike!..... that bowl is just superb! beautiful work!
Thanks so much Steve 😀
I agree, the second is my favorite as well. The branch really adds to the natural edge. Thanks for sharing..
Thanks Ron, I'm just so glad it worked 😀
Again Mike just a amazing piece.. the coloring and pattern of the wood are so special, I understand why you were kinda distracted by its beauty 😅😊. Your channel is now growing by the day.. Keep it up, and I love your work.
Thanks so much Wendy, I'm enjoying the ride but still find it really hard to believe it's all happening 😄
Very Nice, another great bowl, this one is even better than the last one.
Thank you and I completely agree 👍
Very lovely piece of artwork! I love your videos and mellow sense in talking with us! Thanks from Kentucky.
Thank you so much Larry, I do try to create a friendly atmosphere, all the best, Mike
Gorgeous piece, amazing, beautiful work thank you 😊
Thank you very much! 😊
Beautiful wood makes a beautiful bowl.
Thank you very much and I completely agree 😁
Being from California this sequoia turning is amazing
Thanks, I do love this wood 😀
Beautiful work! You have such a great eye for how to use a piece of wood. It is amazing to watch.
Thanks Bob, I try to do my best for each piece 😀
Really like the second bowl. Both are great. Great job👍👍
Thanks so much Roger 😀
Very awesome, Mike. Your channel is one of my favorites. Always inspirational.
Thanks so much Archie, that means a lot to me, thanks so much for your support, all the best, Mike
Beautiful as always Mike! ❤ it!
Congrats again on your continuing success !!
👍😁🎉🍾🥂
Thanks so much Terrie 😀
Nice work Mike. The bowl looks fantastic and I think it was a good decision to keep the branch. Thanks for the video.
You are welcome Mark and thanks so much for watching 😀
If the 2 bowls from this piece the natural edge is my favorite 🙂
Thanks I think it is as well 😃
Hello Mike. When you turned the first bowl I was stunned by how beautifully it turned out. And I am really pleased you have done the second quite quickly, so those who watched the first are still able to make a sound decision as to which they prefer. To me, this one certainly takes this piece of wood to another level. It is fabulous and you should be rightly proud of it. Well done!
Now …. The next question …. What are you going to delight us with when you turn the cut off ends from both pieces? 🤔
Thanks so much Angela and that is a very good question. The end pieces are not as interesting (although my prove to be) so not sure, I guess the obvious thing to do would be to do the same, turn on standard and one natural edge. But I will give it some thought to see if I can think of something more interesting 😀
Do we have to prefer one? 😅
@@lornacy not at all 🤣
Those ripples interrupt my thoughts too. Beautiful work, as always. And congratulations on reaching 20k!
Thanks Ronnie, I'm very easily distracted as well when it comes to wood like this!
Love the bowl with the branch end sticking up.
Thanks David, it made it harder but so worth the effort 😁
Another beautiful bowl escapes from the tree it was locked inside! ❤
You need to be a poet Louis, you have such a beautiful way of phrasing things 😀
@@MikeHolton I work with words a lot. I have dabbled in poetry and story writing but mostly I edit other peoples literature. 😊
@@louisjackson4634 Wow that is so cool! You have a gift 😀
@@MikeHolton Thank you Mike. Just need to get on my lathe or get the whittling knives out a lot more 😊
@@louisjackson4634 😁
Really nice wood, can wait for the third piece to be turned.
I have to more to do from this, thinking of ideas as we speak 😀
Another beautiful piece Mike.
Love watching your productions.
Many thanks Bill, I really appreciate your support 😀
20,000 subscribers! Congratulations!!
Thank you!! 😀
I really enjoy watching you work. My dad loved being in his shop, making things for friends and family. Watching you brings back so many happy memories for my husband and I.
Thanks so much for letting me know how watching my work makes you feel, it gives me great joy to know I help evoke memories of loved ones. I would have loved my father to have seen what I make but I'm afraid we lost him before I started my turning. All the best, Mike
Absolutely stunning! Your videos never disappoint!
Thank you so much Jeff I try my best 😀
Such a beautiful bowl. Lovely wood.
Thank you very much! 😊
Beautiful! The live edge really sets this piece off.
Thank you very much Dana, must admit I love this one as well 🤭
Thank you for discussing and showing the tool processes more. It really is an amazing wood
Thanks for watching Rachel, all the best my friend, Mike
Yes, you now have 20,000 subscribers, and congratulations. As always, Mike, you have produced a lovely piece. I do like to see the first coat of finish bringing out the beauty of the wood. 🌞
Many thanks Ray, that first coat nearly took my breath away!
@@MikeHolton I’d noticed 🌞
🤣@@raydriver7300
Mike this bowl is beautiful! I adore this wood. The colour variations are stunning 🤩
Thank you very much Donna, you have another piece of this same tree
@@MikeHolton i did wonder if it was the same tree. I thought the initial shape looked the same 😍. I love my chunk of this tree 😁
@@donnagreen7386 Yep, same tree 😀
@@MikeHolton mines the best though 😁
Beautiful bowl. That is an impressive scraper!
Haha thanks, I picked it up off Facebook Marketing, it's a monster 😂
Love that bit of branch sticking out, inspired bit of thinking there 👍🏻🏆
Thanks Chris, it made it hard to turn but so glad I tried 😀
Beautiful bowl, Mike. Congratulations reaching 20k!!
Thank you so much Tracy 😀
Such beautiful work. I love getting inspiration from your videos. I’m newish to wood working and have only been turning for 2 years and your videos help me understand the process.
Hi Ladonna, so glad my videos are helpful. If you ever have a question or problem let me know and I'll do my best to answer. All the best, Mike
Intense turn beautiful result…well done Mike!
Many thanks Ron, I had a few issues hollowing but certainly worth the effort 😀
Wow Mike another stunning piece. While both bowls from that log are amazing, I agree that the live edge and keeping the branch edge really makes this bowl stand out.
Thanks Dan, I do love the way this one came out 😀
I knew you do it its gorgeous , quite often i cut a y branch in half and turn them the opposite way and show them as a pair 👏👏👍nice one Mike
Thanks Vini, this was a challenge with the protruding branch but I do love the way it came out 😁
I love the live edge. With that protruding branch, it looks like the red is flowing into the bowl and puddling up.
Thank you! Cheers and you're right, it does!! 😁
I agree with you, the live edge is my favorite as well. The branch gives it a lot of character.
Thanks Rex, it made it harder to turn but really worth the effort 😁
I love Sequoia and I think these were wonderful choices for these projects.
Thanks! I still have 2 more ends to do something with 😀
I await them with what is probably way too much enthusiasm!@@MikeHolton
What a beauty! Thanks for sharing your talent and expertise!
My pleasure! thanks so much for taking the time to watch 😀
Another beautiful piece Mike. And you still have some left over for some smaller bowls. Love this one.
Thanks Tim, I have started to ponder what to do with the rest.
Now that is a lovely bowl 🤩
Thanks Michael 😊
