Definitely not a soup bowl. Maybe a chip or cookie bowl? Beautiful wood, even if hard as nails. Thank you Dan! Congrats Phil on passing 50 thousand subscribers!!!! Whoo-hoo!
Wow so so so beautiful. Olive wood is one of my very favorites. BTW there are olive orchards all over California. Even wild olive and the bushy Russian olive. The climate is very similar to Spain and Italy so you can bet we got that going on. I've got some Greek ancestry so I've always been a little partial to olives. I'm growing my own little baby tree now actually. Thank you so much for this video. This bowl is so beautiful. It should be an art piece but if you have a home full of art pieces It could also make a yarn bowl. No matter what it's gorgeous. Thank you so much for the videos and for keeping the wood and the tree an essential part of your turnings. I especially liked the story about hiding marbles and proof of life. Phil is the one that recommended you to me and I love his resin work but the life of the tree is the root of my obsession with wood turning. Don't ever stop keeping the bark. It will be a sad day if we lose the live edge. And thank you for recommending Kimsey I love his fearless approach to any shape he's determined to keep the natural form alive.
...that turned out amazing...olive wood is just such a beautiful wood...well done...👍 I also follow Steve Kalogerakis...I believe he's near the Mediterranean and seems to have an unlimited supply of olive wood...does some beautiful turning with it... But I'm happy to see you're back at it...love all your work pieces!...
Hello Phil. Hearing the clickity clack of your 5/8” swept back bowl gouge cutting the corners off of this awesome piece of wood is music too my ears. The bowl is gorgeous, too. Sensational video as well. Take care. 😊
Awesome. Hope your doing and feeling well. Glad to see your in the shop. For me it's the best therapy. I have been leaving a lot more of the natural edges lately. I guess you have inspired me. Thanks for posting the video I really injoy them.
Beautiful and very informative on your view of working with the wood. I'm a pen turner looking to move up to bowls. I've gotten olive wood from Spain, Italy and Israel. Thank you very much and be safe.
Wow, sounds like you have some great turning blanks, Troy! Moving from spindle turning, for me, was difficult. I always wanted to turn bowls but it's such a different discipline. Still, I had to give it a try. Now, I hate spindle turning and I'm no good at it! LOL! Which ever way you decide to go, just enjoy yourself, that's what's important. 😊
Your philosophical ethos of nature and how you relate to it with your wood turning is beautiful, Phil. This is yet another stunning art-piece you've so skilfully mastered out of an odd piece of wood, everything about this bowl is gorgeous. Take care of yourself and try not to over do it! Be safe, thank you for just being you, Phil! 💛🫂😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil I guess I must be totally cool because I love watching your channel. But in all honesty it's fantastic to watch you at work, and I liked the clip of you working at the lathe. It's amazing how you can see which way to mount the wood to get the best out of it. Thanks Phil. 👍👍
297th!! Well, maybe not that many. Hey, anyone can be 1st, you know! LOL! That is a beautiful piece, Phil. You never cease to amaze, buddy. With all the sharpening you were doing that must be incredibly hard wood. You certainly showed who the boss is, my friend. It didn't really have a chance once you got it into your shop. Great work! Thanks for sharing! Happy turning, .....Gord
Oh my gosh Phil. This olive wood bowl is stunning. Sooo beautiful. You did an incredibly awesome job. Well done Sir. Thank you for sharing your talent with us. 💕🤗💕
!!!!!BULS EYE!!!!!!! Again. you nailed it I'm so embarrassed my pieces don't look as good as your. I Wii keep on trying be as close as I can to your results. I hope you are doing well and keep on showing us beautifull pieces. KEEP ON TURNING.
I mustsay Phil, You haven't missed a beat my friend! Glad you are feeling well enough to get back in the shop with such a tough piece! Came out beautifully I might add! Who knew we could go from a woodturning channel to a horror channel in a split second lol. That was funny.
Holy cow, Phil…that is gorgeous! So much interesting to look at, and I wish we could all feel it. I especially like the circular grain where the branches were. Glad you’re feeling up to working in the shop. :) Take care, Marcia
I just love how you always make sure that mother nature is your most important thing that you capture. I'm always looking forward to your next piece of work. I myself will always take another wood turners artwork for reference to how I would challenge myself for my next project to make sure that something is left of nature. Sometimes it doesn't happen and you end up with a salad bowl. Then again some of those kind people want a fancy salad bowl. Either way happy turning my friend and it's awesome to see you in your element again. 😍 now it's time for me to get back to work.
Funny you should should say that, Edward. I'm working on a piece, now. Started out as a half log, then a live edge bowl and now it's a small dish! LOL!
Phil, When the video started, I was thinking “No way he is going to get that to work”. Happily you made it work extremely well! Happy you are back! Best Wishes, Kevin. PS seen grands lately? We are sitting our 5 month old granddaughter. It’s fun to see them change when they are that small!
I like your post. When I first started watching Phil I thought the same thing. There's no way you can make that work. But I've learned that he always comes through. And he taught me how to make things work.
the grain is the star for sure, and that shape that you achieved if fabulous! Really enjoyed seeing you at work. Thank you Mr Phil for sharing that beautiful piece, and I totally agree why put anything on that side? The woodgrain is more than enough all on it's own. Ax in the Head, you crack me up. and I love the thoughts of days that as kids we would have placed a marble or toy there in the knoock,, POL spot on Mr Phil!
Had to work hard to get that piece of olive wood looking nice, Phil. When I start roughing a piece like that, I use a well-swept back 5/8 bowl gouge and lower the handle so you get an easier slicing cut. I see you're using HSS bowl gouges. You'd be surprised at how much better an M2 or better yet an M42 or CP10V gouge stays sharp longer on hardwood. I love breaking the turning rules of leaving piths in. Those branches make the piece. Great job! Thanks for sharing.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Get's the job done. I keep a few M42 gouges nearby for finish cuts. The price is steep so I don't want to waste them. My worst gouge is a Hurricane. ❤❤❤, Phil! I absolutely LOVE watching your videos, I can't say that enough! I have a small crotchless h piece of Applewood that I'm going to do like you did for this piece of olive. When I saw the piece of wood at the beginning, could not figure out how beautiful it will turn out, great work as always Sr. GM, GA, GE. Glad to see you.
Gorgeous centerpiece for any table. I can imagine a beautiful autumn colors arrangement as a spectacular eye-catching centerpiece or on a mantle. ♥️👍🏻🇺🇸
Hello Phil you can almost never go wrong by turning olive wood the beauty of the nature its there and ready to be revealed .Great work Yiannis (Athens Greece)

I know your videos aren't exactly an instructional how to, but I've learned so much from watching. We have a similar way of looking of looking at peices
Hi again Phil ,we have lots of Olives growing in our district, I have turned quite a lot of it over the past 8 or more years, 1 large root from a tree more than 100 years old, beautiful wood and lovely to work, maybe it's the climate, for all our Olive Wood is dense but mid range of hardness, tending to soft, thanks again George Lomas NZ
Thank you for the great video Phil I've also noticed at a low speed it's wobbly and a medium speed it levels out and at a high speed my lathe walks away LoL 😂😂😂 so a medium speed does the trick take care of yourself 👍👍👍👍
Hi Phil. Found you quite by accident but love to watch your work. You're our favorite turrner. Good luck and smooth sailing. Kepp up the good work and "Don't let the old man in".

Agreed, Yiannis! 😄
Is it just me or is the sounds of turning a soothing white noise? Unexpected side benefit of lathe work.
It's just you, Richard! LOL!
Wow! That is another amazing piece! Someone who crochets can use that with their yarn with that deep valley on it. Man, I wish I could do turning! That is stunning! Darn.
😄

😊
Very well done, It looks like a yarn bowl! So not just an art piece. 😉
Cool, thank you! 😊
I do know there is Russian Olive as well as this Olive from Las Vegas. I suppose there are other varieties as well, George. 😊
The chips at the start looked more like sparks. Gorgeous wood and a very cool bowl.
LOL! Felt like it, too, Shane! 😊
I like how you added some new camera angles! Glad to see you back in the shop, beautiful piece of Olive Wood indeed!
Thanks for noticing! 😍
My that's a lovely piece. Thanks for sharing your art with us, Phil.
😍
Thank you for the great video Phil I've also noticed at a low speed it's wobbly and a medium speed it levels out and at a high speed my lathe walks away LoL 😂😂😂 so a medium speed does the trick take care of yourself 👍👍👍👍
Yeah, it doesn't always work but, sometimes it does! 😍
olive wood is one of the most beautiful woods
No doubt about it, William! 😃
Well you've done it again...another gorgeous bowl!!! The inclusion looks like a cave entrance to me with the bark. 😉
Cool! 😊

My second viewing of this: simply gorgeous! Olive will grow well in central and southern California, having a Mediterrainean type climate.
