    297th!! Well, maybe not that many. Hey, anyone can be 1st, you know! LOL! That is a beautiful piece, Phil. You never cease to amaze, buddy. With all the sharpening you were doing that must be incredibly hard wood. You certainly showed who the boss is, my friend. It didn't really have a chance once you got it into your shop. Great work! Thanks for sharing!

    Your philosophical ethos of nature and how you relate to it with your wood turning is beautiful, Phil. This is yet another stunning art-piece you've so skilfully mastered out of an odd piece of wood, everything about this bowl is gorgeous. Take care of yourself and try not to over do it! Wow, sounds like you have some great turning blanks, Troy! Moving from spindle turning, for me, was difficult. I always wanted to turn bowls but it's such a different discipline. Still, I had to give it a try. Now, I hate spindle turning and I'm no good at it! LOL! Which ever way you decide to go, just enjoy yourself, that's what's important. 😊

    I just love how you always make sure that mother nature is your most important thing that you capture. I'm always looking forward to your next piece of work. I myself will always take another wood turners artwork for reference to how I would challenge myself for my next project to make sure that something is left of nature. Sometimes it doesn't happen and you end up with a salad bowl. Then again some of those kind people want a fancy salad bowl. Either way happy turning my friend and it's awesome to see you in your element again. 😍 now it's time for me to get back to work.

Thank you Mr Phil for sharing that beautiful piece, and I totally agree why put anything on that side? The woodgrain is more than enough all on it's own. Ax in the Head, you crack me up. and I love the thoughts of days that as kids we would have placed a marble or toy there in the knoock,, POL spot on Mr Phil!

    Sort of a newby to your site, but there's drool all over my tab screen. Beyond excellent turning. Somtime in the distant future I'll try something similar. I have a question concerning the wall thickness. On this project, could they have been thinner, or did you choose this thickness for preference or safety. Once again, fantastic piece.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, John and welcome! 😊 Most of my pieces have thicker walls than one might consider normal. I do it for a variety of reasons depending on the piece of wood I'm working with. In this case, as I indicated in the video, I wanted to preserve some of the bark and nature in the void so you could still run your fingers in there to feel what once was, while the tree was alive. Had I turned thin walls, much of that would have been lost.

    Had to work hard to get that piece of olive wood looking nice, Phil. When I start roughing a piece like that, I use a well-swept back 5/8 bowl gouge and lower the handle so you get an easier slicing cut. I see you're using HSS bowl gouges. You'd be surprised at how much better an M2 or better yet an M42 or CP10V gouge stays sharp longer on hardwood. I love breaking the turning rules of leaving piths in. Those branches make the piece. Great job! Thanks for sharing.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My gouges are M2 steel and cost 1/4 that of M42. I can sharpen in less than a minute. Works for me, Greg! 😍

    • @JamesBondDZero7Mi6
      @JamesBondDZero7Mi6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Get's the job done. I keep a few M42 gouges nearby for finish cuts. The price is steep so I don't want to waste them. My worst gouge is a Hurricane. It's just HSS and not M2. I question if the heat treatment was done correctly. It seems to not hold an edge very long at all. Happy turning.

    California is loaded with olive trees, many of them in orchards for commercial oil production. For some reason though, you can hardly ever find it offered as turning stock. The trees are long-lived producers so I guess once planted it isn't often that an orchard is taken out.

  • @nicoledegen4173
    @nicoledegen4173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow so so so beautiful. Olive wood is one of my very favorites. BTW there are olive orchards all over California. Even wild olive and the bushy Russian olive. The climate is very similar to Spain and Italy so you can bet we got that going on. I've got some Greek ancestry so I've always been a little partial to olives. I'm growing my own little baby tree now actually. Thank you so much for this video. This bowl is so beautiful. It should be an art piece but if you have a home full of art pieces It could also make a yarn bowl. No matter what it's gorgeous. Thank you so much for the videos and for keeping the wood and the tree an essential part of your turnings. I especially liked the story about hiding marbles and proof of life. Phil is the one that recommended you to me and I love his resin work but the life of the tree is the root of my obsession with wood turning. Don't ever stop keeping the bark. It will be a sad day if we lose the live edge. And thank you for recommending Kimsey I love his fearless approach to any shape he's determined to keep the natural form alive.

    B-E-A-UTIFUL bowl! I am new to this and I'm curious to know - was this fork piece kiln dried? If you know, does it have to be kiln dried, or might it be safe to use wood that has been dried under a tarp, protected from precipitation?

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of any wood like this that you can get kiln dried. This, like most natural turning wood, is air dried. The best way to dry wood is put it somewhere out of the weather, uncovered, and where there is a breeze. Or, if you're in a hurry, you can use a cardboard box open at both ends, a fan at one end to blow through and maybe add a light bulb for heat if you are really in a hurry. 😊

      I have a J tool rest, Lewis. My wife paid almost a hundred bucks for it. It's a Robust. I've tried to use it a few times. It never works! I think from the top of the post to the top of the rest, it's too tall and then from the bottom of the rest to the top of the post it's too thick. It hits the lower part of the bowl and is too tall by the time I get my gouge on top of it. It irritates me every time I think about it! LOL!

    OMG PHIL I can't say enough how beautiful that olive wood is. its a shame here in UK wood like that is very expensive. o well

      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I'm sure it's expensive here, too, Manjit. I'm just lucky Dan had an abundance of it and wanted to share with me and my viewers! By law, they had to cut down much of what was growing in Las Vegas due to the mess they make, I think. Not really sure, can't remember. 😊

    Very nice, Phil! There are probably many varieties of olive. Russian Olive is grown extensively in southern Alberta as windbreaks.

    Great to see ya Phil! Happy Turning! Lived in Vegas for 18 years prior to moving to Central Texas! I pruned so many olive trees back in the day was fun they are fruitless and great for turning! Can you hook me up with a piece from your source. That would be awesome! Let me know

      I wouldn't know how to hook you up, Douglas. Dan was coming this way. I doubt he would be coming your way too, but, you can ask him. Find his comment and reply. 😍

    Top notch work as always and oh my, that is beautiful wood. One question for you,, what do you do with all the sawdust and shavings 🤔.
    Very best wishes. Derek.

      I live on acreage and have a bank out back that I throw the shavings over, Derek. Once in awhile I might dump some in a low spot on the property but it doesn't seem to do much good. 😊

    While I appreciate your skill and imagination, I am not partial to this style of bowl. I prefer the “solid” bowls, without the large gaps and cracks. The wood is beautiful though.

    My second viewing of this: simply gorgeous! Olive will grow well in central and southern California, having a Mediterrainean type climate.

    Great piece Phil. I didn't realize olive trees grew in Nevada but do think they grow well in parts of California. Sure don't grow here in NJ!. Too bad, I'd like to get some. I've turned pens and bottle stoppers out of Bethlehem olive wood and they look great.

    I love turning Olive wood. It turns smooth and has amazing grain (and it usually smells good as well). This was very helpful to watch since it is not a easy blank to turn. I have a similar piece in another wood and now I am inspired to try your approach. I'll do it as soon as the temp in Central California drops below 105 and the Governor says we can use electricity again.

    What a lovely, and interesting, bowl! I am also leaving features on my bowls. Why not share some history, of the tree, with the viewer? Such bowls are a challenge to make, but always interesting! Thank you for the stylistic inspiration!

    This Saturday a crew is coming to cut a widow maker limb off of a Wild Cherry tree, cut down one Live Oak that died of old age and four widow maker limbs from two giant Water Oaks. Living in hurricane prone Florida I have to keep up with the tree maintenance. Every three years the woods get a thorough checkout. Pay the price now to save paying a heck of a price for tree damage repairs after a bad storm. A lot of folks get complacent with tree maintenance and wind up with unhealthy trees. I'll be shipping all the downed wood up to your place so you will be able to do wood turning for another 50 years or more. It should be about three to four tractor trailer flatbed loads. Your Olive wood bowl turned out beautiful.

    That wood is so pretty ..... when you put the sealer on that outside branch just came alive ! Like a Polaroid developing !
    I hope my brand new grandson will like wood work, he will have a lot of tools .
    That inside looks like you put some chocolate syrup and started to stir it in milk !

    Hi again Phil ,we have lots of Olives growing in our district, I have turned quite a lot of it over the past 8 or more years, 1 large root from a tree more than 100 years old, beautiful wood and lovely to work, maybe it's the climate, for all our Olive Wood is dense but mid range of hardness, tending to soft, thanks again George Lomas NZ

    Hi Phil. I think this is an absolutely delightful piece ranking up with the best of your lovely work. I am not sure but I think this is the first piece of Olive wood I have seen turned. The grain effects around the Crotch area are superb. Yeas, the wood has to take a lot of credit for the piece produced but it takes absolute talent to make the decisions about how the piece is going to be turned, what to take off, how far is far enough, how much nature can I leave on, what finish should I use to get a great surface finish, etc, etc.? These things are not physically or mentally decided by the piece of wood, they can only be determined by the skill, knowledge & craftsmanship of the turner. He or She only can determine the final outcome, only he or she can make or break the piece. Superbly handled sir by a master of his craft, it is truly beautiful. Well done mate, stay safe & well & catch you next time. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

    Another conversation piece. A good bowl for Halloween! I like the comment you made regarding being a "bark" guy. Keeping it really makes the pieces more natural and interesting and no offense meant to the resin artists, but it IS wood and was once alive.

    Howdy Phil, was wondering is this Russian olive or something else? It looks similar grain wise but the pieces I have are darker. I would send you a picture of my meager turnings but can't do that here.
