  • Black Oak! Even carbide couldn't cut it. I struggled with this piece, inside and out. It does have some great features like "lace wood" characteristics.
    Finished in shellac.

    Black Oak to me is the timber that rises up to the surface as the fields are cultivated in the Fens in Cambridgeshire, England. The timber was Birch forests that were supposedly felled by the Romans to allow access to the Fens, which was a large area of low lying wet land in eastern England, where populations of Celts proved stubbornly difficult to subdue. The trees were left to rot in the boggy ground but instead became partially-fossilised. When the Fens were drained in 1600's the land proved to be especially rich and fertile but as the peat dried out the trees gradually emerged, much to the annoyance of the farmers who found them very difficult to dispose of. With considerable effort they can be cut to create logs for burning for which they are superb, burning with the vigor of seasoned wood and the long lasting nature of coal.

      I think you're thinking of bog oak Clive.

    • @clivewilliams3661
      @clivewilliams3661 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@BogwoppitBruceWe used to live on the edge of the Fens and burnt quantities of this in our Rayburn and it was known locally as Black Oak, being black and a dense extremely hard timber. I understood that bog oak was indeed the common name for timber that was part fossilised in peat bogs and what we had may have had that as a common name but to us it will always be black oak (not the American hardwood).

    • @nobodyshome8726
      @nobodyshome8726 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are talking about Bog oak. Trees that were dropped thousands of years old in peat bogs for preserving, not necessarily one species of tree. Black oak is a species of oak....nothing to do with the color.

    • @clivewilliams3661
      @clivewilliams3661 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nobodyshome8726 I am fully aware that I am talking about the timber globally called bog oak, but locally to the Fen region in UK it is called black oak due to being black and exceptionally hard, it is not even oak but the remnants of the birch forests that were supposedly cut down by the Romans 1600-2000 years ago in pursuit of dissident Fen dwellers. Black Oak (Quercus Valuntina) is an American hardwood and has nothing to do with what the Fens are giving up and is not common in UK. The irony is that American Black Oak used to be Yellow Oak until the Americans changed its name.

    I think you were turning what we call in South Texas …”Black Jack Oak”. A tree the size you were turning if dead, can burn up a new chain by the time you fell it and buck it if you’re not constantly touching the chain up. Not quite so bad when green. I’m sure there’s a lesson in there somewhere😏. Great job as usual Phil. Beautiful piece!!!

    Hi Phil, another beautiful piece showing off your excellent workmanship. You are so right! I am retired and still manage to run out of enough time to accomplish all I want to. It's like the old adage of one step forward and two steps back. I just put all my tasks in an order of priority to try and get a times table of all I am up to. It's almost like punching the time clock again, except it mostly all a labor of love. Why are the things I do not really care to do seem to always find their way to the top of the to do list? I'll get to do the good stuff all in due time, I guess.
