Flip. The S23 is at 630 CHF versus 880 for the Flip but very soon, the Flip will be at 100 CHF or Euro from the S 23 and I think it is really so unique for a little bit more that it is a no brainer for many.
As someone who doesn't take selfies, I went with a Flip 5. It's not about the selfies. It's a more fun phone. But practicality wise, the S23 would be the better option.
I went with the Flip 5 because I want the disconnection. I find myself so often when unlocking my phone mindlessly scrolling on youtube, tik tok, or twitter. The flip has allowed me to disconnect and get what I need at the front so I can stay on task and stay in the moment.
I went from an S22 to a Z Flip 5. Battery life is better and it's so satisfying to just "flip" the phone closed after a call. Takes me back to my high school days.
this video was really helpful, i already ordered my z flip5 but was having second thought, in the end its the fact that its different from the usual phones that is so magnetizing, it's becoming so unexciting to see all the new smartphones look the same
The greatest thing of the Flip is it's cover screen and how limiting it can be. The fact I can reply to the more frequent items I receive like texts, emails, FB messenger, makes it so I handle one task and then move on with my day. I'm not caught in going to another app to doom scroll through things or window shop. Paying with my phone is much quicker.
The Flip5 really caught my attention but I think the appeal has been more emotional than practical because of the novelty. Your comparison helped get me grounded again, so thanks.
Doesn't that depend on the use case of each customer? If you are a person that is making a lot of selfies, or a content creator that makes videos, even if you are used to make a lot of video calls, the flip 5 is the more practical phone than the S23. You could probably also argue that it works better for people that do sports or fitness, where the form factor has clear benefits as well. For the older generations that grew up with flip phones, there is certainly an emotional factor as well, but I think this especially makes sense for the younger, social media oriented customer base, simply for practical reasons. Personally I am interested at flip phones as future computer replacements. With AR glasses coming up now, the combination of a small form factor phone, with the high performance that it offers could be a more practical and mobile combination as well.
@Saji310 S23 Ultra which Best Buy is offering at an identical price would be significantly better for content creators and would be very simple to get tripod accessories for that would have more future proofing
Having a flip is way more handy than these journalists are giving. For me it has nothing to do with nostalgia but daily functionality. One of the things (i cant be the only one here) is in meetings at work. The smaller footprint is less obvious during meetings if you get phone calls, messages etc.. Rather than pick up a mini computer and read my message. I can discreetly just look down without having to pick it up. Another plus for me is driving. I can leave it on my wireless charger and keep it to where it's not on the charging portion if my phone doesn't need to be charged or slide it back to make the connection if it does need charged. For me the flip is perfect for my lifestyle and my needs i have for a phone. In this day and age people get too far into cameras and specs. The vast majority of phones out there today all have better than average cameras and are completely fine for most needs. Those who are hard core into videos more than likely have a designated camera. I wouldn't get too far into the weeds when it comes to specs because you won't even notice that much of a difference in real life.
It is a lifestyle choice rather than a value choice or for practicality or longevity. You really must think that having it flip is more than a novelty that soon wears thin. If that is you then the flip phones will be fine.
I was a 13 pro max user and have been on iPhone for years. I bought the Z flip 5 for a secondary work phone bc the trade in deals with a Flip 4 i bought used was too good (only $400 net total!!). I seriously love it and have barely touched my iphone in the past 1.5 weeks that now I dont know if I'll actually get the 15 pro max even though ive been waiting for it to have USBC for years. My main sim is in the Flip 5 now bc I can use imessage via Beeper app. It's a dream, no longer held back my the chains of imessage! This phone is just so fun to use, it's not something you can really explain bc on paper sure it might seem like gimmick but theres actual utility in being able to prop up the phone open and especially with the cover display like for taking selfies with the best cameras you have instead of the front. Also, android and especially samsung's One UI is sooo much more refined now, runs so much smoother and isn't janky like it used to be. There's also so much more you can do on android that iPhone users didn't even know was possible
I have both. The main reason I got the Flip 5 was that it takes up less real estate in my pocket. I agree with this review, and I love both phones. I couldn't care less about DeX and never used it. I probably never will.
Thanks for the video. My wife switched from S10 to Flip 5 instead of S23. The question is: did she get less for more money? From her perspective she got much more for more money. She loves the form factor of Flip5. She no longer needs a case, it takes much less space in her bag, she can put it in all those tiny pockets of her clothes when she does not want to carry a bag, and she has a bigger screen now. And on top of that she finds it to be the most beautiful phone she ever had. The answer to the question of the video is probably a very individual one.
The fact you can use Goodlock and use most of the main apps on the outer display, and the fact it folds in half beats literally, anything. I switched from the flip 3 and love the phone.. I love the flip series. You have to treat it like a baby and replace the screen protector every now and then, but overall it's an awesome phone!
How often do you change the screen protector 🤔 was thinking of finally switching to android because I was highly disappointed with what Apple did to this year 15, and the flip touches upon one of my main problems with phones these days-too damn big for my hands and pockets
@@murasakiflowers I had my flip 3 for 2 years till I upgraded to 5......changed the protector once....the replacement seemed to last longer than the original....at first I thought the screen had cracked along the crease till I realised there was a protector on it and it was this that had worn.
The Ultras are so big heavy. Unless you're using your phone type professional camera work you don't need them. Had the S22 Ultra hated the shape. Now have the S21 Ultra which is better but still to big sand heavy really. I just don't need it. Next phone will be the Plus.
@@bradavon bro... 1stly- the s23 is WAAAAAAY more than that, you're obviously someone who doesn't actually use the power of the device you purchase so if that's your logic... buy a Motorola razrr. 2ndly- it being heavy is dependant on its user or a comparison- if you use ultra or pro model phones: it's actually lighter than most
Oh I see what you did there Edit: also the crease is mostly a non issue. The real issue with foldables, is the inevitable breakage, poor repairabilty, and poor warranty/customer service
I personally would choose the S23. Its just more complete and you basically get it all for $800. The Flip 5 isnt bad at all but the Galaxy S23 gives more of a flagship feeling.
@soul-the_argonaut5211 You're right. I did say the S23 is more of a flagship, but I didn't think the Fold/Flip were midrange based on reviews and samples I saw in spite of them missing some of those key features.
What about having that barrier against doom scrolling? I think that one more step of flipping the phone open is enough to stop most people from getting sucked in. Also, one-handed use on the cover screen of the Flip5 is just too good.
I disagree, I have activated all the social media apps on my Flip5 but the Flex Window is to small for me to doom scroll. Using it mostly for essential apps like banking apps, verification apps, and occasional sporting apps to check scores.
@@MatthewMoniz I personally disagree as well and I think it is a great barrier from doom scrolling, especially against the biggest doom scrolling app for me, tiktok. The screen is great to reply to a message, do a quick check on some social media or whatever. But for other apps, like tiktok, the screen is just too small or has some formatting issues. I've definetly felt me doom scrolling less after I got the flip 5 because, to me, the flip 4's screen was almost a gimmick and offered nothing more than a smartwatch. For (almost) EVERY notification, i still had to open the phone, so as a barrier against doom scrolling, it was almost useless in my use case.
I've been wanting the flip5 purely for aesthetic and nostalgia reasons but this kind of grounded me. My current phone is part of the Galaxy Note series, which is discontinued and I basically want everything the note has to offer but with some upgrades so the s23 makes sense lol.
I decided to switch from S23 to be Z flip 5 too. Im very happy to use it, it comfortable , small size and light weight, and cover screen is big enough to use app and any fuctions. I love it.❤❤❤
I made the mistake of getting the Razr plus and the flip 5. You are 100% correct. Flips and folds are not for me. I end up opening them 90% of the time. It's just more time and effort and decreases efficiency and productivity. These will be my last flips. On the other hand the S23 family is very nice.
Flip certainly looks good and appeals to person like me who's a fan of compact phone. But when I think of the shelf life - I'm not sure if flip 5 lasts longer than s23. If s23's camera and audio are great enough, the only question I have is which one is more solid. I'm still using my 6 year old phone. I'm getting a new phone only because my workplace asked us all to install an app that won't install on such an old phone. I want to use the same phone for 5 years or more.
ooh I found my fam here. same case for me. I need to change my 8 years phone haha. it still works fine but limited in memory and apps to use. I've been eyeing to flip phone since the day 1 it was born but the reviews never get better. do I really have to stick unflip phone then?
For me, I've found that 512gb is sort of the ideal amount of space in something that doesn't have an sdcard slot. If the s23 had a 512gb version it would be in the running for me. Right now my choice is between the Asus Zenfone 10 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5. I keep my music collection on the phone and that consumes a decent amount of space. I live in a place without cell reception and on my drive I'm not going to have cell reception for the first part of it into work and the last part back so streaming isn't really ideal for me and I tend to like to listen in a manner that is better suited to having my collection available so that if I want to listen to a given album in its entirety I can. Apps also keep getting larger and larger and photos take up a lot of space as well. For me, space is a big selling point and kind of a deal breaker for me with the s23. That said I realize I'm an edge case and most people don't want or need as much storage as I might. Coming from the S10e I've found that for a lot of things its about as big as I would want and the s23 is a little bigger in the hand having held one...the flip has the outer screen that would make one handed use in the grocery store or on the run a bit better I'm thinking. If I need to open Color Note (which I've used on a 2.9" display before and it was usable there) or my preferred to do list app (2do) it seems like that would be ideal for that IMO (or at leasat I'm hoping it will be). Ideally I'd love to have a 4.7" to 5.5" phone (I felt 4.6 or 4.7 inches was the sweet spot but we are long past that...I miss my Xperia Compact phones). The S10e is the longest I've owned a phone as my old Xperia Compacts didn't get support for as long so I ended up getting a new phone every 3 years or so (with one of them getting replaced sooner as the Z5 Compact has some overheating issues and I wanted more onboard storage so I went with the XZ1 Compact or whatever....the S10e has lasted me over 4 years and I would have upgraded earlier but options were limited. I'll likely upgrade whatever I get after 3 or so years so I've decided that I'm willing to sacrifice a little durability. My S10e's battery life is starting to get bad so I don't really feel like waiting until 2024 to see if the S24 turns out to be good (and doesn't end up growing larger which seems to be the sad trend with phones). I tend to use one handed mode a lot with my S10e and lately I've found split screen mode to be very useful for one handed stuff and I get the impression that the flip 5 might do well with splitting the screen. I have reservations about the less durable screen that you can't put a glass screen protector on (not to mention the screen protector you shouldn't remove that it comes with among other things), but the zenfone 10's one handed mode doesn't work quite as I like and I believe its split screen stuff isn't quite as slick as Samsung's along with a couple other things I'm forgetting that have me leaning toward the flip. Cameras aren't as big a deal for me as I see a cell phone camera as the camera you always have with you that meets the requirements of "is a camera" and if I'm wanting to take good pictures I'll usually bring my 90D or R8 with a good lens on it if not multiple lenses. I've found the S10e's camera to be sufficient so if the flip is as good I'll be fine with it. If the s23 had more storage it would be in the running. Having run into a lack of onboard storage in the past (with my Moto X gen 1 years back) and juggling apps I found that I don't like dealing with that constantly so going back to that sort of issue is a dael breaker for me right now. Edit: I'd add that the headphone jack has kept the zenfone 10 as an option in my mind so far as having to carry around dongles or put them on all my wired headphones is a pain and where I work we can't use bluetooth so dongles are my best option. Having tried a couple out I am finding they sound slightly better than the onboard sound in some cases so I'm warming to the idea and dongles are cheap enough that I could just put them on the couple sets of headphones I'd need them on and keep a couple extra spares on hand. The convenience of the headphone jack makes its loss from most brand's phones a bummer and I'd love it if we still had flag ship phones with 3.5mm jacks and microSD card slots in them. If Sony made a smaller phone than they normally do I'd probably go back to the Xperia line.
It sounds ike both moving ur music into apps, or having them available offline, and online for your most songs would save you a lot of space as it's cloud based, and the photos being sent to a cloud automatically without consuming space on the actual phone would be the best deal 😊 Like i currently use a s21 FE and it's perfect for my use, but for some reason i cant get this phone out of my head. It's just too sexy 😅🙏
true, i was tempted to get s23 but it has only 256gb which is not a good deal for me. so i was thinking the flip but the photos mp is much better with s23
Thanks for listening and taking the time to do this comparison while everyone else is doing the moto thing. I had a flip 4 with the idea being that my screen would be more protected if my phone fell. It was a good phone, especially when combined with the samsung strap case. The length of the phone and the crease would be my only complaints. Yes, you don't really see the crease, but you do feel it. We are on the 5th iteration of this phone. It's time for that crease to get iron out. Have an S23 now.
I traded in the Flip4 for the S23 back in march, I plan to keep for at least 3-4 years, I don't think I would've kept the Flip 4 in a perfect condition that long.
Okay this was actually the comparison I needed to see 😂 coz I’m planning to switch back to Android with the Flip5 so I’ve been watching flip phone comparisons when i should be watching whether i should even buy one in the first place
The z flip5 is a good phone for someone who has it for 1 to 2 years at most… For the long run i agree that the s23 is the better choice for most… Not to mention you get more features on the s23 - Dex is a really good feature to have and having an extra camera for 3x telephoto is very handy… The z flip is for fashionistas . I would never trade my s23 ultra for a z flip not happening… Only if i wanted a secondary phone while keeping the ultra . You have to be lucky and live in a country that Samsung has a good customer service because if you’re not the z flip can turn into a real nightmare in the months to come… The screen protector begins to peel off and no store has any idea what to do about it. I had a z fold 3 and i sold it because the lack of support by Samsung was atrocious . So if you’re anxious don’t buy a fold… We never know what might happen with them in the long run - i ´d rather play safe than being stressed all the time…
@@tangojulietfoxtrot Screen protectors were always applied to all z flips since gen 1 . The problem is that they start to peel off. I had a few foldables from Samsung so I’m quite aware… If you live in the US you should be safe. Samsung provides excellent customer service there, you should be fine. In some countries in Europe if you remove the screen protector even if it peels off and re-apply with another one they say you lose your warranty…It should be Samsung to do that for the costumer. Can you imagine this?… Different realities.
I'm trading in my s22 ultra for the flip 5. All the bells and whistles with the camera is more than I want to figure out. Zoom always looked like crap. Plus it's frickin heavy and the big battery lasts only a day,
@@Francis_CruzHere in Indonesia, u can just pay $1.6 to change the screen protector at every Samsung Service Center if ur warranty ran out. I suppose you could do the same thing there.
Personally i still think folding phones still need to mature a bit more. I wish the 23+ was 6.4 or 6.5 and with a 1440p screen. That would be ideal for me but if i had to choose between the two, it is the s23
On the battery life aspect you have to think about how a lot of your time with your phone will generally be spent on the smaller front screen which will conserve battery better.
Interesting points raised in the video and good advice to think about what you really need and prioritise with a new phone. However I think you've missed the main point of flip phones for many people. Yes some just want to be cool. But for me, it's about portability. Phones have just got ridiculously big and app interfaces have got clumsier to use up the extra screen size leading to even bigger screens, etc. Modern phones are simply too big to carry safely in a pocket or even a belt holster. So, unless you live in a climate where you wear a big coat with big pockets, you have to hand carry the phone or get a man-bag. If you're happy to do that, then go all the way and get a tablet or a laptop with a SIM and a nice bag and forget about a phone. Flip phones finally allow us to stick the phone in a front pocket again, and for some of us, that really is a massive deal. I should probably stop there as it is the key point. But... It also means you're far less likely to drop it, have it fall out of a pocket, or smash it on your desk while pulling it out. So it might just survive 4 years better than the s23. But I do also wish, for the money, they'd provide a better camera and I'm shocked there's no Dex. PS I wish someone would release a flip with a simple hinge and two separate displays rather than adding the cost and other issues associated with bendy tech. A small bezel across the middle of a screen would be a compromise worth living with to get a compact phone at a decent price. And yes many will disagree. But it's back to what you prioritize and what compromises you are prepared to make.
S23 base is only 6.1 screen size though with very slim down bezels, the flip is kinda cool but it's still to huge when opened with that long 6.7 screen! As he points out harder to reach with your thumb etc, I'm using regular S20 & it's just right all the base model S series fit in pockets etc easily, It's those ultras and plus models etc that don't so much..
Thanks for making this video. So after switching carriers i had to buy a flagship phone to get a "deal" so I chose the s23. Which I have currently. I've have has the notes and ultra's until the s23 so the downsize was something to get used to. I recently considered trading my s23 for a flip 5 but after watching your video I decided to stick with the s23. And again it was simply for the flip aspect of it but the lack of battery did it in for me.
Great vid, Matthew! I only missed a comparison between the selfie camera on the s23 vs the main camera (as a seflie) on the flip. This makes so much difference, because, for a lot of people that just wants better selfies, Z flip 5 is the deal. Regardless, thanks!
To be honest, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 caught my attention when they improved the cover screen to make it more useful, and before I watched this video I still wanted to buy the Z Flip 5. But when I watched this video I thought again. The reason is because as you said "if you want to use it for 4-5 years" yeah! Every time I buy a cellphone, I want it to last a long time and not have to spend money every year, whereas the Z Flip 5, as people say, has a folding screen problem that really makes my heart uneasy, even though it is guaranteed to be replaced twice within a certain time, it still won't be as long as the S23 in terms of usage. Of course the Z Flip 5 in the next 2 years will force me to spend money on anti-scratch which is quite expensive and there could be damage to the screen creases in that time. and the next reason is because the camera on the z flip 5 is not the same as the S23, so that's what makes me doubt it. 12MP for me is not enough for Android FLAGSHIP. maybe I'll wait next year to buy the Z FLIP 6 which I hope has improvements. but for now I will definitely buy the S23+ as a smartphone for watching and playing games, while later I will use the Z flip 6 specifically for SOCIAL MEDIA and PHOTOGRAPHY and messaging/call.
I have the Samsung galaxy Z Flip 5 in lavender 512gb and its well worth it. Beats other Samsung phones easy. I have had so many different Samsung's and this is by far the best
I have the S23 coming from a Z Flip 3. My plan was to switch to Z Flip 5 once it is released but my Flip 3 flex screen got broken in exactly it's 13th month, a month after the warranty expired. I am in an fb group with flip users and they all had the same experience even on the Flip 4. I hope they fixed this issue on the Flip 5 because I really enjoyed my Flip 3 when I had it. But I also really enjoy this S23.
Dude same here Broke just over a year and the warranty was over Doesn't seem to matter though since there are so many stories of rejected warranties anyways. They should not have released the flip 3
I just traded in my S22 for the Flip5 and my GOD the Flip5 is so much better... battery life is WAY WAY better; camera is comparable; and it just feels more premium. Super happy I made the switch (for only $70!)
@MatthewMoniz Thanks for the video, this was pretty useful to me. I would just like to give feedback on the weighting things with your hands which I think it's a bad idea because you are not equally strong with both hands so your dominant hand will always find things lighter than your non-dominant hand even if it's just a bit. And in cases like this, where the difference is just a few grams and you're holding the heavier phone, maybe in your non-dominant, the difference will be even more noticeable. Hope that makes sense.
To me the camera comparison is the back one on the flip5 x the front of the s23/s23 ultra, most times I use my front camera to record myself and take pictures. I see no reason to use the front camera on the flip5, unless you are using both at the same time. Personally I am going with the flip5 also because of that and how how narrow it is/it folds, making it the only samsung phone I can fit in my pockets and how useful it is in recording myself outdoors without the need to carry any tripods everywhere.
Thank you for the Video. That being said, I don't think you're really going to feel the weight disparity of 19 grams between the 2 phones is even mildly significant. What you're probably feeling is the physics of Density and Weight distribution do to the obvious difference in form factor between the phones.. For me this is a Non factor. Additionally, the s23 is a 6.1 inch phone and that's all it will ever be. While the Flip 5 has a 3.4" Flex screen and a massive 6.7 inch Front Screen (when unfolded) phone which for a miniscule 19 grams is a major WIN in my book. To compare these two phones is like comparing apples and oranges in that the Flip 5 is literally 2 phones in 1 and the s23 is not. I believe a more fair comparison would be the 6.7 inch Flip 5 against the 6.6 s23 (still only a 1 for 1 phone) PLUS. The longevity of the Flip 5 has been well documented on another TH-camrs Hinge and Screen challenge against the Razr Plus. It was tortured with Flips, Sand and Dirt along with being submerged under water 30 minutes. It lasted for days and well over 400k folds. SO I'm not really worried about it breaking down on me over a 3 to 4 year period. The only reason I would choose any of the s23s over the FLIP 5 is the cameras and maybe the battery life and that yet again is a non factor for me as battery life can be tweaked and I'm an average dude, I don't take a lot of selfies or a lot of pictures and when I do the Flip 5's cameras suit me just fine.
That stress test was not practical as it was under a controlled environment, not real life over a prolonged time with fluctuations in ambient temps and the hustle and bustle of daily life. It is well documented that flip phones have a high breakage rate and this is one reason why Samsung offers great trade-ins, to get them off the street after a year as that is when they start failing more.
There are so few phones now that are small or compact. That's the main draw with the flip phone, compared to the regular ones. The S23 among others are huge and bothersome to bring anywhere imo.
With at&t you can trade in basically any iphone and samsung galaxy, S, and Z series for 1000 off zflip 5. As long as you have a unlimited plan, plus my 11 pro max had a cracked back and they didn't care.
I appreciate the transparency and honest review! I got the flip because I liked it that it was smaller in my pocket and that it was something different than the usual "brick" in your pocket/hand hehe. The battery was a minus and still is but I hope it will at least get me through the day. In the end, I'll check it out and if I won't like it, I'll return it and get the S23.
The flex mode does look pretty cool though on the flip! Pros and cons 🤔
I have the s23 and i ordered the flip 5! had it for 48 hours, and I ended up returning it! I found my s23 to be a far superior device then the flip 5! also it is compact enough for me! Better cameras as well!
Im currently in the market for a new phone and I thought the same exact thing you mentioned about these 2 phones. Im so glad my thoughts were validated. I think with the Z Flip, you're paying more for the innovative "flip" factor. The s23 is def the way to go
My Flip 5 arrived today, can't wait to play with it. Got it for the smaller size and leaving it in my pocket 80% of the time and doing texting and short calls through my watch. 15% more using the front screen and the last 5% I'll need to unfold it occasionally. Should last me 5 years. But your points are probably valid for most phone users. In two years I found that I wasn't even fully using the capabilities of my Pixel 6 Pro and the trade in value was to good to pass up.
i was such a samsung hater in the past. i had the note 9 for a bit. decided to buy the s23 and give samsung another try...wow i love the s23 now. what an amazing phone. i may go all in on samsung ecosystem and get a s9 tab.
I agree with this review considering the price of flip 5, it's only worthy for the esthetic of flip phone. Other than that for slightly cheaper price, S23 is more all rounder.
I still don't get the point of clamshell folding phones. Just more friction with having to open it. It's also a lot thicker than a standard phone so there isn't really much size advantage. Plus a phone like the S23 is easily pocketable.
I have both and one thing I've noticed is the S23 looks better when you're outside. When I'm at home, I'm definitely using the Flip. Battery is slightly better on the S.
@@elturkito33did u choose ??? Obviously if u want better phone in term of camera and display etc... S23 is better phone overall ... but the main goal of flip series is how much smaller it is ..doesn't bother u as much as normal phone ... outside display Obviously...and it is smaller and more practical ... I have flip 3 for more then 2 years now ... nothing bad happend ... I did drop it like hundreds of times ( with cover on ) and no problem in this regard ... and I can never go back to bulky big phones ... it is always about how u use it ..why u wanted it ... I hate big phones .. this fit in any pocket ..feels light and smart ...
Have a s22 ultra. Just bought the Z flip 5. I like the flip and wanted something smaller. I know I am sacrificing some perks but I will see if I can adapt.
I bought Flip5 because I think it is cool and have been considering for a flip phone since Flip3 but I did not plan to use it for more than 2 years. I change my phone every 1.5 to 2 years anyway. After 2 years with flip5, I will assess if I want to continue with another Flip phone or not.
Honestly, right now I'd go for the Flip. I go to the gym 6 times a week and Spotify playlists are pretty much part of my life 12 hrs a week+ Add to that, dog walking 2 x a day , easy access looks good on the Flip.
I had the flip3, just got the 5. I just think the form factor is neat, its been a conversation starter, great size for the gym too, feels like a dedicated mp3 player from way back. also i find they help keep you off your phone more, checking notifications etc without properly going into the phone and getting tempted with other apps. i think the 5 will be even better for that, as now you can properly reply to messages and makes called etc from the front. get goodlock and you make all the app you might needs quickly, wallet, maps, messages etc available right there and keep yourself from being tempted to doom scroll I actually had the fold 5 for a few days before returning it for the flip, partly because i knew i was going to use the phone too much again (the weight and awkward front display was the main reason though, i just hated using it closed, it was 100% going to get broken at the gym, my shorts could not contain it.)
Thanks for the review. I wanted to get a flip, i have the S23. The camera is most important for me. So staying with the S23. THANKS kept me from making the wrong choice.
@Matthew Moniz I think the Galaxy Z Flip5 is a lot more durable than it gets credit for. I think Samsung might as well have rated the Galaxy Fold and Flip IP68, or IP58. Because all the durability test show it handles dust better than expected.
I feel like the Flip could possibly look better with a metallic exterior, thinner bezels and sharper corners like the Ultra... ultimately the glossy exterior with the very round corners caused me to buy a different phone.
Excellent video, regards from Argentina! One quick question, if you want to chose one of them, why you chose and why? Thanks for your help and for your video!
I have the S23 and the Flip4. In my comparisons, the S23 produces better vdo and zoom photos. I use the phones for different occasions. Since the Samsung hasn't upgraded it's cameras from the Flip4 to the Flip5, I decided for the Flip traded-up from Samsung. I got $900 for my Flip4 in a trade-in. For the pre-ordered promo, they discounted the 512gb, and the Flip5 cost me a whopping $47 for the upgrade, and the support clock resets.
dam US trade ins are wild, in the uk we are getting £420-£440 depending on storage That being said, they gave me £240 for a flip3 with a damaged screen (my fault, thing go drop a few times, once down a flight of stairs, the fact it only had a small fracture along the crease is actually impressive.)
@MarkDe94 £240 doesn't sound bad for a damaged Flip3. The $900 trade-in for newer Samsung models didn't last long. It ended on 11 August, then dropped to $600 for the Flip4. My carrier was only offering $500.
@@sjanusheske1 yeah it's not terrible for a phone that's technically beyond economical repair because of the high screen price, but if it wasnt damaged, i would only have gotten £100 more.
I'm stuck between the 2 right now lol, the offer from my carrier makes the Z Flip free for me with my trade in. The 23 Ultra will be $11 with my trade in lol. Idk which one I wanna get, but I'm leaning towards the flip just cus it's cool looking lmao.
On the z flip 5 you don't have to reach up high to get your notifications down etc just change it in settings then you can Bring it down just by scrolling down anywhere on the phone i prefer the slimmer size of the flip 5 i can just use my thumb to do most things one handed being a woman with smaller hands it works well . The front cover screen is now so much better i lov that i can do most things on the front without having to open the phone .For a lot of women this form factor and smaller compact size is what we have been waiting for, the larger slab phones were just getting to Big but each to there own .I sill own the old vintage Motorola v3 flip phone in hot pink and it still works im so glad the flip phones are back ❤
the only thing i care about is whether the user interface and settings are the same, and you didnt even mention that. the regular galaxy is NOT small, its gigantic and barely fits in a pocket. i need something small enough to fit in my pocket that works exactly like the regular galaxy so i dont have to go crazy trying to figure out how to do things
@@droiddevx03 i installed good lock and i put almost every app on the cover display which i use 90% of the time. it consumes waaay less battery this way
great! I love Flip 5, and the clip increased my admiration for it..but I don't know if it is available in my country (Iraq) or not, and the price as well....how much is it??
Can't properly put it into words, but watching content, for me, feels more immersive on the Fold inner screen than the slab type screens. Maybe that same feel to a lesser extent extends to the Flip.
Samsung does not have a brand value like Apple. S23 looks exactly similar to a budget Samsung phone. If you are spending for a flagship you expect some royalty. I wanted to buy S23 but choose Z flip as probably other specs are similar but I am paying a little bit more for an additional screen and glare i can get with it.
Hmm, spec wise, the flip5 is a bit in between the S23 and S23+. Therefore, some gaps are gonna be different (weight, price, etc). Your point is valide neverthe less. I have the S23 since 6 month and now testing the flip5. It's just you seems to neglect the pros of the flip.
Even if fold was cheaper than S23, I would pay more for s23.. That stupid horizontal line in the middle of the screen and the inconvenience of carefully opening it and closing it everytime I want to use the bigger screen is horrible...
you people who have no marketing skill will never undersand what you are buying !!! Every single product has its own target audience !!! PERIOD! those who will buy the flip care more about its compact slick look, than its features !! they are paying to get that feature and not to get better camera or better storage or battery.. UNDERSTAND THIS SIMPLE THING!
Watching this on my S20. Have no plans of buying any phone now. However that nerd boy in me always enjoys while watching these clean tech videos. Thank god, youtube, creators and internet exists. 😊
Just got my new Flip 5. Got it at my local best buy at a super great deal. Free upgrade to 512GB and only paid $900 CAD including tax, with a $200 gift card. I did trade my S20 FE but that phone was really showing a bit of its age and some damage. Super happy for the price i paid with.
What would you pick the S23 or the Flip5? Also, if you enjoyed the video feel free to like and subscribe! Thank you for your time.
S23❤
S23
I went with the Flip 5 because I want the disconnection. I find myself so often when unlocking my phone mindlessly scrolling on youtube, tik tok, or twitter. The flip has allowed me to disconnect and get what I need at the front so I can stay on task and stay in the moment.
I went from an S22 to a Z Flip 5. Battery life is better and it's so satisfying to just "flip" the phone closed after a call. Takes me back to my high school days.
I own an s22 and I feel you. I'm on battery saver mode 90% of the time.
Similar story for me, I went from an s22 ultra to a fold 5. I have no regrets!
S23 ultra has the best battery life
Z flip b3 guy is on other level
How's on this date? I'm still on s22 (2 1/2 years), battery is solid.
It was me who asked to compare . Thanks for doing it and I appreciate that you value feedback 😊
Anytime!
I literally wanted this too so thanks
Me too, thanks guys!!
this video was really helpful, i already ordered my z flip5 but was having second thought, in the end its the fact that its different from the usual phones that is so magnetizing, it's becoming so unexciting to see all the new smartphones look the same
The greatest thing of the Flip is it's cover screen and how limiting it can be.
Don't get the Flip phone...it works great but it's just a Flip phone and the novelty wears off in about 2 months for me
Doesn't that depend on the use case of each customer?

The answer to the question of the video is probably a very individual one.
its completely subjective! As long as your wife is happy then thats all that matters. Happy wife happy life!

I have to agree after switching from Pixel 5 to s21
I love the Flip 5. I had the S23 Ultra, and I love it too, but it was too heavy. The Flip 5 is so much lighter and smaller.
I really want to do it. Same problems as you, its just so much to lose if anything goes wrong..
Why not get the S23 then, which is even lighter?
These are 2 very different devices, buying the s23 ultra in the first place was a mistake if you don't miss anything about it when using the z flip
The Ultras are so big heavy. Unless you're using your phone type professional camera work you don't need them. Had the S22 Ultra hated the shape. Now have the S21 Ultra which is better but still to big sand heavy really. I just don't need it. Next phone will be the Plus.

I personally would choose the S23. Its just more complete and you basically get it all for $800. The Flip 5 isnt bad at all but the Galaxy S23 gives more of a flagship feeling.
The flip and fold only have flagship chips... everything else is mid range

The flip lost that barrier with flip5. You can now use any app on the cover screen
I disagree, I have activated all the social media apps on my Flip5 but the Flex Window is to small for me to doom scroll. Using it mostly for essential apps like banking apps, verification apps, and occasional sporting apps to check scores.
maybe put it face down on the table? or get a case with a cover?
@godcandy777unfortunately not everyone has enough self control to do that.
Been using S23 for six months now. The selfie camera and nightography are so great ❤❤❤
I've been wanting the flip5 purely for aesthetic and nostalgia reasons but this kind of grounded me.
What I don't get is, why Samsung markets the Flip as a selfie and video phone and then doesn't built in a better camera...
This is exactly how I feel about the S23. It needs a 512 GBs option in the US.
Holy smokes!
true, i was tempted to get s23 but it has only 256gb which is not a good deal for me. so i was thinking the flip but the photos mp is much better with s23
Thanks, I didn't know about the dust restance. I usually keep my phone for 5+ years, so durability is definitely important to me.
So if you’re anxious don’t buy a fold… We never know what might happen with them in the long run - i ´d rather play safe than being stressed all the time…
You do realize they now make screen protectors for the flip phones?.

I traded in a s7 edge with att and basically got it for free and i LOVE IT! I'll be buying the 6 when it comes out
Interesting points raised in the video and good advice to think about what you really need and prioritise with a new phone.
You will wait for z filp 7, and you will buy z filp before you die.
I guess i was just a small plan out of this broken screens, green light..
Better just wait for Flip 6 and enjoy your flawless S23👌🏻
Dude same here
Broke just over a year and the warranty was over
Doesn't seem to matter though since there are so many stories of rejected warranties anyways.
Got any reviews about it 5 months in Stew?
That's disappointing that the z flip 5 doesn't support dex, but I'm glad you pointed it out.
Which phone do u advice for me : iphone 13 or s23 or zflip 5?
S23 base is only 6.1 screen size though with very slim down bezels, the flip is kinda cool but it's still to huge when opened with that long 6.7 screen! As he points out harder to reach with your thumb etc, I'm using regular S20 & it's just right all the base model S series fit in pockets etc easily, It's those ultras and plus models etc that don't so much..
Hi im' in the same situation! could you help me adding more details or experience why you chose finally the S23? thanks!!!
😮
Im currently in the market for a new phone and I thought the same exact thing you mentioned about these 2 phones. Im so glad my thoughts were validated. I think with the Z Flip, you're paying more for the innovative "flip" factor. The s23 is def the way to go
then get a boring iphone they are better at
I would go to a galaxy s23. Yeah the flip factor is "cool", the s23 is a much more capable phone for $200 less
Great video. I just wanted to point out that having a larger sensor does not necessarily mean that you have more light.
I loved my note 4. I didn't like my note 8 as much, too big. I love my s23 as it's the same size as note 4. Size matters
Nice video - you communicate in a natural and engaging way. Thanks for the summary of the two and the verdict based on a pragmatic approach..
I thought I wanted the Z flip4 but now that I've been using it for about 7 months...I'd rather have a S23 or S23 plus
I think people are getting the foldables because they are free and to be able to trade in for the next one.😊
Agree
Exactly. One of the main reasons to try one is you'll be able to get the Flip6 next year for like 3 bucks. 😂
Who carrys the same phone for over four or five years I'm lucky to get two years out of one
The only phone from Z line up that doesnt have Dex you mean?
I agree with this review considering the price of flip 5, it's only worthy for the esthetic of flip phone. Other than that for slightly cheaper price, S23 is more all rounder.
I still don't get the point of clamshell folding phones. Just more friction with having to open it. It's also a lot thicker than a standard phone so there isn't really much size advantage. Plus a phone like the S23 is easily pocketable.
I’m glad you made this video because that’s what i needed to compare.. I’m trying to choose between the two
I buy S23 256GB only
I have both and one thing I've noticed is the S23 looks better when you're outside. When I'm at home, I'm definitely using the Flip. Battery is slightly better on the S.
Hi I am in the same situacion comparing both phones, could you help my whith that?
I have the Flip 4 and my main gripe is the aspect ratio. Videos don't fill the screen completely.
Honestly, right now I'd go for the Flip. I go to the gym 6 times a week and Spotify playlists are pretty much part of my life 12 hrs a week+ Add to that, dog walking 2 x a day , easy access looks good on the Flip.
I use the S22U for work (construction) and my Z Flip 5 on weekends, I always look forward to getting to use the Z Flip 5!
I went for the flip 5 just because of the physical fingerprint scanner. Cannot go back to on screen fingerprint scanner ever again.
I had the flip3, just got the 5. I just think the form factor is neat, its been a conversation starter, great size for the gym too, feels like a dedicated mp3 player from way back.
also i find they help keep you off your phone more, checking notifications etc without properly going into the phone and getting tempted with other apps.
i think the 5 will be even better for that, as now you can properly reply to messages and makes called etc from the front. get goodlock and you make all the app you might needs quickly, wallet, maps, messages etc available right there and keep yourself from being tempted to doom scroll
I actually had the fold 5 for a few days before returning it for the flip, partly because i knew i was going to use the phone too much again (the weight and awkward front display was the main reason though, i just hated using it closed, it was 100% going to get broken at the gym, my shorts could not contain it.)
I have s21 ultra, i wanna see what s24 bring before upgrading. S21 still does it for me at the min.
Thanks for the review. I wanted to get a flip, i have the S23. The camera is most important for me. So staying with the S23. THANKS kept me from making the wrong choice.
Thanks for doing it! Wanted to see this difference.
No problem!
Flip is for those who want something innovative, but for most normal smartphone is a default option
I like both but upgraded to the Flip 5 from the Flip 4. Otherwise it would have been the S23.
Matthew, you deserve more subs. Videos quality and contents are getting better and better :)
I appreciate that!
They got me, i need a small phone and I probably won't be flipping it that much because i want a small phone......am sold
I went for the flip5 mainly due to the form factor. No more plaguing issues related to large phones in jeans pocket!!!
@Matthew Moniz I think the Galaxy Z Flip5 is a lot more durable than it gets credit for. I think Samsung might as well have rated the Galaxy Fold and Flip IP68, or IP58. Because all the durability test show it handles dust better than expected.
Kinda crazy that it can scratch from a fingernail though.
For the pre-ordered promo, they discounted the 512gb, and the Flip5 cost me a whopping $47 for the upgrade, and the support clock resets.
dam US trade ins are wild, in the uk we are getting £420-£440 depending on storage
That being said, they gave me £240 for a flip3 with a damaged screen (my fault, thing go drop a few times, once down a flight of stairs, the fact it only had a small fracture along the crease is actually impressive.)
@MarkDe94 £240 doesn't sound bad for a damaged Flip3.
I hated the under display finger print sensors..I still like the physical finger print scanner.. be it side or at the back..
I'm stuck between the 2 right now lol, the offer from my carrier makes the Z Flip free for me with my trade in. The 23 Ultra will be $11 with my trade in lol. Idk which one I wanna get, but I'm leaning towards the flip just cus it's cool looking lmao.
I am in the same boat but I've also been thinking about switching to the dark side of Apple
Man, a 6" screen being called "small" is just depressing. Bring back the 4" screens for people who want tools, not toys.
I hate hate hate fingerprint scanner on the screen! what a bad idea!!! only bought the s23 because it's obviously better
Going to Z Flip from S21. Just for the flip nostalgia. Great vid.
i have the s23 ultra and the flip 5. flip 5 is my first foldable and i think i'll never get back to ordinary phones
Appreciate this video & the person who asked for it! Everyone focuses on the Ultra
That’s my point. Why would I pay more if I’m not getting more? Yes they fold but that’s the main attraction.
Portable is awesome. For me personally, I will never go back to carrying a roof shingle in my pocket.
I had a choice between iPhone 15 plus and the flip 5. I got the flip 5 instead and totally worth it 🥰 in love with the phone 😍🤳
