Having a more useable outside screen should reduce the times one opens, and closes it, thus reducing stress on the hinge. Smart idea.
Another smart idea for you. Just use normal phone.
@1stRanger Why? If they can afford it, it's their money to experiment with.
@@1stRanger you do you ma’am, I’ll do me.
Or increase stress by being even more hooked as everything is so easily accessible.
@1stRanger sure.
But it's not as cute though.
Ive never had a phone this nice and fun. I'm not a huge tech person, but as an everyday consumer i absolutely love how i can use the outside screen for everything. Its quick simple and easy ❤
Hi how is the battery life?
@Mimi-gw7hy it's pretty good for me. I'm someone who uses their phone constantly, like for hours. And I end up charging like once towards the afternoon/evening. So if you are someone who is a casual user you'll have no problem with the battery life.
You can use the screen of non flip phones for everything and it's right there all the time
@@cowarddonnie-ji5yzy’all love bringing up other phones that don’t flip but you need to understand people miss flipping open their phones and want that aesthetic back without using an old generation phone
You don’t want to flip open a phone, that’s cool but I do cause I loved that back when I was a teen
So is it durable ?
For those using a Fold/Flip (and dont know about this yet): You can use two fully seperate launchers on the two screens using an App called Tasker. Its a bit annoying to set up, but once thats done you have another big option to customise the device to your needs.
Personally I used Niagara Launcher on the outside and Hyperion on the inside screen of my Fold 3
niagara launcher is amazing, very clean minimalistic. It works great on the fold z5 too if anyone is interested.
You actually don't have to download another app. You just side swipe and add your next screen using the double screen icon
@@ashleyholz9071 but using tasker allowes you to have the launchers switch automatically when switching displays
I dont get it what does it do?
@@senorr2387well simply using its potential to the max
I've been using a Zflip3 for almost 2 years and the feeling of separation you get when you close it is one of the best features. It's like closing your laptop at work and giving something else your full attention. It makes you a lot more conscious of when you are spending time on your phone and when you are not which is a really good thing.
I think we underestimate how powerful that is. Our attention is so fragmented and scattered because of electronic devices, it's important to have a psychological cue for ending one thing and beginning another. Plus, you can slam it shut when annoyed, and that's just a joyful stress reliever.
Try and buy me some, so that me too i can use good phone
YES and thats why really messed it up now totally unnecessarily. Really dont know what samsung was thinking. This is their most important phone for getting people to switch rn. Really dont understand.
using the phone open or close is the same as a traditional cell phone.
no difference of time spent on phone
Or how about, putting your phone in your pocket? Wild concept. Much separation.
Its so crazy how in just a few years we went from those wonky "foldable" screens that felt like folding a rubber mat, to practical and usable folding screens.
And if you go a bit further back, everyone wanted flip phones because of how cool they looked. My first one was a motorola with digital external "buttons" to play/pause and change songs or radio stations.
And the tech is only going to get better from here.
no its still overpriced, overhyped, and underutilized
@@gwthrpain How is it overpriced? It's literally the same price as other flagships.

I'm giving it a try how do you find the camera quality?
@@abtatti I love it
hii!! i’m planning on getting it but i’ve heard mixed reviews about durability! how has it been holding up for you?
The production quality on these videos is higher than the actual product advertisement, goes to show how much effort is put into these reviews. Great stuff!
I have a flip 3, and find the half-open is super useful as it's essentially a built-in camera tripod. Honestly one of the biggest positives of a folding phone.
Have you had any screen issues?
Still love my flip 3 ❤
@cr9179 kinda. The screen protector that Samsung applies by default sucks (starts cracking a few months in). I got that replaced about a year in with a high quality one, and have had no issues since.
Yep
My phone is still under 2 years contract and i got few more months left, but the actual screen cracked about 6 months ago. Anyone has that issue?
I'm probably gonna be sticking with the Flip style phones for a long time. My favourite "feature" is that they fit in my pockets while also being big enough for modern standards :)
Thats what she said 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This! I have a Spigen case on and still it gets so small compared to my old S21.
yea i got the fold which is cool but also huge and not so compact and easy
How's the battery on them? Main thing for me is camera and battery usage, but I also loved my moto razr and I kept it 😊
I like my z flip and I'm an old lady
I really appreciate your sensible approach, super informative without over explaining, and really well edited reviews. Thank you.
Yep he is fantastic a wonderful person also kudos to him💯👍
@@chadchivrell2606 imo he's kinda biased towards iphone
probably because he's an iphone user himself
I really respect the fact you did a follow up review. A lot of reviewers only talk about the flavor of the month, jumping from product to product (for their reviews and blogs) and you never see how the product they're reviewing ages. Seeing someone change their opinion or saying how they feel about it months or years later is great and more useful for the consumer than the "first impression" videos.
Love that he was able to admit he was wrong initially. Real man.
He admitted because samsung provided this phone for review. Check the description 😂
@@richardjones9951I’m glad I’m not the only one that caught that! Yea it’s a good phone all of a sudden and not at all a repeat of the last years model. Sell out
@@richardjones9951true but he was honest about the review
He still says 'kinda'. His remarks really irritated me.. There was no settling by Samsung
Ez money
I’m glad he admitted he was wrong. That outside screen is awesome
No, it's not.
@@1stRangerI really don't get the appeal. It's so underwhelming
What is so fantastic about it? The flip mechanism creates a problem that did not exist before and then a second homescreen is installed on the outer wall so that the actual homescreen does not have to be used? That makes no sense at all. Just use a smartphone without flip function and you also have a homescreen on which you can quickly answer your messages xD
@@mrdiamondhands468 This phone solves a huge issue for me, I can't use any phone 6"+ because my hands are small and phones shouldn't in my opinion be a two hand ordeal. This is finally a reason for me to upgrade, since basically no one makes phones under 6" anymore.
Just for transparency, are you also commissioned on sales of this phone you are praising?
I NEVER comment about this stuff but your video creation is top notch and not is that harassing ultra high tech way. Your design details are minimalist but offer a feeling of easy comfort. Your tone and content are cool calm and applicable. You don't get us lost in all those tech bullet points that always try to sell us. You reveal it to us as a thoughtful user in a professional way. I like how you say," here's what it offers BUT here it's real world application and usability" from personal experience. Nicely done. It's like the difference between taking a condo stroll with a friend versus sitting in on a time share mow down.
I'm a motorola loyalist and bought the Moto Razr when it came out but I also just purchased the Z Flip 5. The Razr closes flush and I dont have a crease on the inside screen. I do, however, like the Z Flip 5 outside screen functionality compared to the Razr. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Great vid btw.
MKBHD is such a unique watch for me because I personally don’t really care much nor understand much about this tech, but I’m always finding myself on his channel waiting for his opinion on a product I didn’t even know existed.
How his opinion about things you don't care nor understand much is any different for you than opinion of literally anyone else?
@@1stRanger because I don’t watch anyone else. That’s exactly why it’s so unique. I don’t watch tech TH-camrs. But he is one of the few TH-camrs I’m always finding myself watching.
@@divinemattress Are you in love? That's the only explanation I can see with such a solid reasoning as yours.
I remember when the folds and flips first came out, I dismissed them as useless toys that would probably break in the hand. However, I gave the Flip 3 a chance and it was a solid little phone for me for two years. So far, I'm enjoying the Flip 5 immensely. I'm looking forward to great things from Sammy's flippies and foldies.
No, your correct. They are useless, more fragile toys.

You either die a foldable hater or live long enough to try a foldable and end up liking it 🤣
I love how thorough this review is. Can you please do one for the fold? I'm thinking of getting that one, but not really sure between 4 and 5.
I've watched you talk about various phones on and off for several years. I look at most reviews on the phone I want to buy, but yours are by far the best. Your reviews are both insightful and interesting and help me to make the final decision on which phone to go with. You have a great personality for this kind of work!
There's a number of other specs that weren't mentioned in this video that I thought would be mentioned since the video noted he was wrong about how important the changes were from the flip 4. The most important hardware changes include the NITS went from 1200 to 1750, UFS storage speeds went from 3.1 to 4.0, USB-C port went from 2.0 (no idea why it was still on 2.0) to 3.2 and Wifi went from 6 to 6e. Obviously a number of performance improvements but those are side effects of the faster cpu/gpu.
Great info 👍
Also it now has Bluetooth 5.3 instead of 5.2 like the older Z Flip 4.
Still a useless toy.
@@DemonSlayer-vh8uy That's what my dad says about all smart phones. 😀
@@brianv2871 i think your dad's right atleast for these folding and flipping toys
I got mine yesterday and so far it's been great. I recently dropped youtube premium and missed the ability to close my z flip 4 and leave a video playing just to listen to. Being able to run it on the outside is fantastic. I'm one of the people that use the device in a half folded mode all the time, so the better hinge is always nice to see. Considering promo credit I had and trade in of the Z flip 4 it only cost me $50 to upgrade and I doubled storage to 512G so was a no brainer for me.
Why did you drop YTP - I cannot fathom living without it

Thanks for the great review Marques. I do have to agree with your order of importance. I just got my wife a new flip 5 and the hinges is the biggest improvement. I had four Flip 4's and had to warranty 100% of them for the screen bubbling at the hinge.
I like my Flip 5. It's convenient to use like when checking for notifications and replying text messages. It also fits easily in the pocket. I don't mind watching TH-cam on the cover screen, but of course, not Netflix 🙂 I also make calls from the flex window. I like that I can decide when I want and have to use the bigger screen. When it comes to the battery, it would be really nice to have a long battery life. At the moment, you can make a routine to protect the battery when it's at 100%.
Another thing I like about marques is that I watch the videos for the charisma and the snappy editing, the phones are the side character 😂
I concur 👍🏾
I like to look at things I'll never buy 😅
Love my Flip 5. The outside screen is a huge upgrade, and I use a ton of apps on it, including watching videos. I just love the small form factor.
Me too. I mean I loved the form faction of the square, compact, 6th gen iPod Nano with its display. The Fold 5 and Motorola Ultra+ remind of that device but obviously a much larger form factor and incredible functionality. I'm actually excited to get one of these.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
Question for you that have one, seeing you won't have it in a wallet case or anything like that. It's designed to go into your pocket, how badly does the outside screen scratch? That would be my main worry having it in my pocket with my keys and what not (current phone is in a leather case along with my cards).
Bro, do you think you could have the tesla app working on the outside? Thx
I miss smaller sizes. I hate the size of the iPhone in your pocket (clunky, falls out etc…) I like it in hand but hate it in pocket. Every year I’m thinking about the flip and this one they came out with is nice for sure
as someone who uses a lot of early 2000 nokia phone with the same resolution as the front of the z flip 5 this is a blessing
I’ve been waiting, pondering when to make a switch to the flip and the 5 makes me want to but I’m so use to using apple. No question I like the size/ form factor over a stationary rectangle. The other thing I like about it is having the option to stand it up and you can record what you are doing like art. Not sure why I’m still hesitant to change from an apple product when I went from Sony Ericsson to apple phone. Thing that worry’s me the most is; I go to the beach a lot like 6 months out of the year and the phone goes to the beach (music, reply to emails or messages and sometimes scroll online)
i love the tiny keyboard i love not having to open my phone for just random checks the front screen is a blessing/ adhd friendly(mostly) i seem to do most things on the front screen which like someone mentioned is to protect the hinge from over use and overall protects the phone and being the millenial that i am i love the flip action its quite nostalgic i think personally the one caveat is i wish google wallet was compatible with the flex window hopefully one day
I love the flip series. Started with the 4, now with the 5....as long as Samsung keeps improving on them I'm all in!
I appreciate your positivity about this, I am rooting that it gets better and better! 😊❤
Flip 6: Screens on front and back side of the phone when folded shut
I've actually noticed better battery life. Not a huge difference but it's noticable. I've also noticed the crease is not as pronounced as the flip 4. This was definitely a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you're coming from a flip 3 or older.
thank you for this feedback! i held off on the 4 b|c i just didn't see enough reason to upgrade but after this review + feedback from folks like you in the comments, i think i'm ready.
It's a newer chip with better efficiency and of course the crease is slightly better. I wouldn't call it a worthwhile upgrade based on two minor improvements that we already expected. If you have a flagship phone, this is a downgrade.
The crease from 3 to 4 was dramatic. I can imagine that leap from 3 to 5 is impressive in the grand scheme of things.
A lot of people are talking about the crease but that's just a downside of a folding phone I definitely notice it on my flip 3 but I don't think it's a reason for upgrading (personal opinion)
I also have the 3 and ive made my phone last longer than everyone i know i averaging 10 and a half hours to 14hrs in a day the most just from txting was 1 day and 12hrs
This man will always have the best reviews. I have to say I was on the fence about jumpin off the Apple ship and going back to Android/Samsung, after like 10 years with Apple products, and this might have been the best argument for me to go ahead and do it.. I don’t know if it’ll be the Flip or the Fold, but those are the two finalists for me…
@@terence.j tell me more brother … any personal anecdotes?
I’m in the same boat! I’ve been using iPhones / Apple products for over 10 years, I currently have the iPhone 12, and I’ve hated it since like the day I purchased it, which was over 2 years ago! Been contemplating on whether I should stick with an iPhone and get the iPhone 14Plus, which is a little bit bigger than the regular 14, therefore the viewing screen is a little larger, or change to the Samsung Flip 5, which I believe when flipped open, the viewing screen is the same size as the iPhone 14Plus. I loved my razor flip phone back in the day, and so far I’m really liking the features and versatility of the Flip 5! I always just never really cared for an android /Samsung phone, or I never really cared to take the time to learn and get used to using one, but this one may be an exception! I’m just not 100% sure yet, and don’t want to regret it!! 😅

I don't use the outside screen on my current phone much because it's rather small, but I could definitely see myself using it more on the Flip 5. Got my Flip 5 yesterday. Wow, definately better than my Flip 4. So solid & opens & closes so smoothly. Great for checking notifications, messages & emails without having to open. Probably won't use coverscreen for most of the apps but honestly that's why it has big screen watching Netflix, utube etc. The fact that it's so compact is the main draw card & Samsung has nailed it. Would never get the Motorola Razr Ultra..

@@idcman6692yes it is. I owned the flip series since it first started out and Samsung is partnered with Google (owns android) and now has 7 years of garentee OS upgrades. Yes! Me too. And it just looks so darn cool. :D I love the Motorola Ultra+ too.
It safer to carry in your pockets too, as you can shove it down far enough without it poking out your pocket and so someone passing close by cant easily snatch it out of your pants or whatever.

Im on my 3rd replacement fold ... the screens just go bad.. you get a crease in the center at some point that becomes a permanent wrinkle the a separation bubble happens at the hinge that works its way up the center of the screen till you have a wide white air gap up the center of the screen... Im not a power user so the first time in the first year(luckily I have insurance) I had that happen... Second... maybe 8 mos later same thing happened again... now its happened again and Im going to have to replace it again.. Yeah, money poured by Samsung
To be able to have a larger screen on the front means being able to use it one handed quickly when on the go or quickly checking something then having the larger inside display when you're relaxing is a great idea. I'm a 13 pro user i had the 11 pro max before this and before that the s9 plus and s7 edge even further back so not new to Samsung phones but bored of the slab design and tiny upgrade Apple offers every year! For my use case this was the best option and i can't wait to get it on Monday and try it out 😊 being able to link to windows suits me as i've never been a mac user and the fact it comes with the free starter kit and buds 2 is also great. I will miss the Apple watch i think Apple wins with watches but the Galaxy watch isn't bad by any means.
Thanks for the review. Very informative. Any comments on the camera?
I use the Z Flip 3 for over a year now, for me I actually like how small the cover screen is because of the privacy. At work even if I'm busy I just double tap and check the notifications if there is something important and if there is then that's when I open my phone. Same as like changing the music I don't have to open it. It's very helpful and I'm not using that much battery by doing this.

My first phone was the Sony Ericsson Xperia mini pro, whose screen was 3 inches. It was a charm to use, and somehow it's a wonder that the keyboard on the outside screen, which is a 3.4-incher, is unusable. I'm amazed at how far we've come.

I appreciate you giving this a second look. I have supported the Samsung flip project since gen 1 and I can say the flip5 has really hit a home run. I looked at this flip phone and it has three times the amount of memory available. Plus the fact that they are giving me the same amount of money as a trade-in as the flip phone cost how can I go wrong? But your review assured me that it is a good move. Thank you
The intro transition is one of a kind. I like it😊
the first thing I noticed was how much subtler the crease was than the flip 4. comparing them side by side it is about 50% as noticable. you barely feel it now when you swipe your thumb up across it. I’m surprised more people haven’t mentioned it.
This is true. I tried it out in Samsung store and was surprised. I’m not switching back to Samsung anytime soon though because of their terrible customer support in my country.
I see quite a few reviews saying no decrease in the crease, but there definitely is. Will be nice when they figure out how to get it completely flat.
They've always had a minimal crease when they're brand new. After keeping it folded for about a week it goes to how you usually see it.
Source: I own a Flip4
It's like buying a new car and getting a bump on the hood just for opening. But that's ok cause the previous model was worse.
Seriously people, you need therapy.
@@douglasladd9478completely flat means go back to straight phone.
Had a Flip 3, then a Flip 4, now a Flip 5. From the 3 to the 4 because the screen protector started to detach, just in time for the 4 to come out and Samsung's trade in program made it a no brainer. With the 5, same situation - and maybe when the 6 comes out I'll be doing it again. That said, got my Flip 5 yesterday and was up and running in no time. Absolutely a huge difference. I don't live on a phone, just use it for basic things. Now I don't need to open it that often, particularly with the Good Lock Launcher. Very impressed - glad MKBHD gave it a follow-up.
Talking about screen protector... I bought one ahead of receiving my Flip 5. I read in a few places that I shouldn't replace it, unless by an authorized tech. Any comment?
@@hiramsanchez4912 don't put it. It will destroy your screen
I agree. A screen on the outside is not necessary and averts from the distinguishing factor of the phone. Not to mention that screen will constantly get scratched in my pockets. As well as accidental clicks.
the outside screen is basically a modern phone, in the classic iPod nano form factor.
I would not be surprised if companies start releasing "mini phones" in the next ~6 years, that are basically just this outer screen, but are a fully functional phone in it's own right.
Whoa! I just watched your Flip 5 & Fold 5 video and wundered why you haven't made an exclusive video on Flip 5 because I was more curious on that.. and you just uploaded this exclusive video! That's a nice coincidence :)
Very precise review, much appreciated. I just received my Z-Flip 5 yesterday. I LOVE the small size combined with a large inner screen. It's the first phone to take me off of the Note series in YEARS!
I only miss my s-pen!!
I'm considering trading my note for this too! Kind of nervous though.
Your reviews are appreciated!
Such a helpful and overall great review! Thank you!
I have the Flip 3 and what I loved about the smaller screen was privacy. If my phone was out, not every could see my notifications. But I hated that I could not initially a call from my favorite list without opening the phone. I will upgrade to Flip 5 because being able to add my MLB app and access my tickets for entry scan on the outer screen is great.
I have all notifications switched off 100% for years. You can only see a whatsapp message for example when opening whatsapp. I don't even have any notification showing on the apps that something has come in. You can switch it off per app or for all of them. I love it.
I have a normal phone and you can just use the feature to hide notifications or hide their content, you still have privacy
@noveliayuki Normal phone? Stating my choice of phone is abnormal?
@@fourthgirl i never talked about your right to state your choice or the action of stating your choice, I talked about the choice itself without being rude, though being abnormal doesnt necessarily need to be a bad thing. Having non foldable phones became the normality 10 years ago, so yes a normal phone is a non foldable one
You are the apple of my eyes. Literally and figuratively. Watching your videos is like watching an artist perform their craft. Apple can't even put out better presentation than you!
It would be cool if they added a trigger button to flip the screen open, for when you only have one hand available, basically for accessibility
Let's talk about how accessories work with this device. I have the z flip 4 and have settled on a ring outer accessory on the top half on the back of the phone, but now with the flip 5 it seems I won't be able to put a ring. The rings are kind of like popsockets but they make it very much easier to hold in certain positions. So with the flip 5 now apparently will only be able to use accessories that stick to the bottom half on the back. I get it we could put a case on it but it definitely makes it bulkier and I wound up just removing them altogether because I tried like three or four of them and prefer the lightweight feel of the phone. How will you guys manage with this? Get one of those bulky cases with the holders pre-built on the back? That's been the biggest challenge with this form factor is that space is very limited and in fact as Marques pointed out now we can only put a dbrand skin on the bottom back half. Dbrand will love to charge an arm and a leg for only half the coverage and I'm sure they'll be happy to rip us off for almost $30 just for a little square!
That transition at the beginning of the video is so smooth.
Great review content-wise, and perfect production value! I can't even start to imagine the amount of work that would go into such a high-quality video. Thumbs up all the way, mate.
One handed use on the outside display is super nice for quick one handed texts
This is great, very clear and informative. Awesome job! Helping me to decide if i want one.
Damn that transition was smooth af 🔥
I've been getting the bigger foldables like the Galaxy Folds and Pixel Fold, my spouse has the z flip and using his for a short period made me buy the Z flip 5 this time around. the bigger cover really makes a difference
So I've been wanting to get a foldable phone recently (I'm probably gonna get the Razr+ tbh), but I do have a question about it. If you close the phone hard, could it damage the screen?
I have owned Flip 3 for 2 years, and my opinion is "great concept, bad hardwire". The main problem is that the hinge causes severe "scrathing" on the screen, both in the actual hinge area and rest of phone(it's not very noticeable in dark rooms, but still visible (and looks terrible in sunlight)). Now, it is possibly I could have prevented this by applying a new screen protector (after the original one wore off), but if so, they should have been included in the box with a warning that they must be used.
Another infamous issue is of course the battery life, especially when you get down to 15% and it's a matter of a few minutes before it's dead.
It looks like Flip 5 have improved some of these areas, but I feel like the previous phones were full priced prototypes which have made me lost trust to a degree.
Dude your production quality is just insane. You are singlehandedly driving youtube towards making T.V look ages behind in quality. Keep it up 💯
The editing on this channel has got it’s on update! 😉👍✨
Nice sincerely review as always! Someone's comment for flip 5 was always need to open it for taking photos. This is a really good point! to avoid it, Samsung please put a little screen on back of the phone (i mean on wireless charging side) to be able to see the view of the photo. Not open the phone, means more durability. What a good idea!! Simple is the best. Marques, I hope, Samsung is following your videos and comments for their product improvements😊 Another point is no need to put inside selfie camera anymore Samsung!
Excellent review. I'm even more on the fence weather or not to get this phone soon.😮
I needed this. I preordered the 5 after having my 3 since launch. I was excited and feeling great about the long awaited update since 4 wasnt a big jump. Seeing all the first look videos and then yours came out and I was like shit dont tell me I should just keep the 3 lol.
how was is ur 3 holding up? like any real issues or anything
Same... I love the bigger screen so I just went ahead and updated. We will see when I get it..
@@wagyu_beef Never one issue ! It has literally been a champ. No cases or anything either ! Besides the slippery glass its perfect. The 5 is going to be a dream in comparison.
Did you do a trade-in?
Just buy an s23 ultra at that price..just my opinion tho
7:18 “a flipping phone” 😂
I was not expecting him to show Thao in this video. Love her reviews!
Great video marques really love the flip 5 absolute upgrade right there wish they could upgrade a lot in the fold 5 but the flip 5 challenged the moto razr a lot competition is arising a lot in the flip and foldable phones a lot anyways your review in this phone is top notch now i am tempted to buy a foldable phone just by watching your videos
