Remington 870 VS Mossberg 500 - which one is better?

  • Today I will be comparing the two most popular pump action shotguns of all time, the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500. While I can compare these shotguns and give my personal opinions, only you can decide which shotgun works best for you. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

    I have both the Remington 870 and the Mossberg 500. I have experimented with many different stocks, forends, sights and barrels, and both brands are equally reliable. Both are of equal quality and durability. Mossberg has a two-sided extractor, which is good but Remington’s single extractor is perfectly adequate. My preference is the Remington 870, and like most gun nuts, I can’t point to a specific reason. The 870 is used by countless police forces, but there is no claim that the Mossberg shotgun is in any way inferior. The US Military uses both shotguns, although the military requires the Mossberg 590 model. It has a heavier barrel, which the Navy requested for on-ship combat, so I have read. Remington has a huge aftermarket of parts and tacticool widgets, but Mossberg also has a large aftermarket. So, friends, take your pick and you will have an outstanding shotgun.

    My parents gifted me with a brand new Mossy 500A combo (it came with a bird barrel, and a slug barrel) for my 21st b-day. Over 40 years later, it is my go-to shotgun, and I took another deer with it this year. It's a smoothbore slug barrel that prints a standard paper plate at 100 yds every shot; less than 6" groups with open sights. The action is smooth as butter, and I can cycle it one-handed (which I don't advise). I love that gun, it's a keeper. YMMV, and invariably will...

    Just purchased a 500 over a 870 today! I've owned, hunted with, and shot both shotguns over the last five decades and found the 500 to be the better shotgun FOR ME. I'm looking forward to next years deer, bird, and small game season back home in South Carolina where my 500 will be put to good use I'm sure. Great video as usual! Keep 'em comin'!

    I've never seen a Mossberg. My Dad, three friends and me, own Remingtons. Two of them have the 1100, the others including me have the 870s. I have three 870s in 12, 20 and .410. The 12ga 870 is a Wingmaster that my Dad gave it to me 30 years ago. It belonged to my uncle, later my Dad used it a lot, then me and now my sons. I shot thousand of rounds with it, and it's still in the original condition. They are really good shotguns.
    I also have an Ithaca 37, Winchester Model 97, 12 and 50, Baikal O/U, Silver Eagle SE17 and a Savage 775A.

    Cant choose? Typically if you're an objective first time buyer this is a HUGE decision with tons of mixed information. I was professionally trained and carried the 870 while working and personally own 2 mossberg 500's so ive used both guns a lot. The single biggest difference for a new shooter will likely be the ergonomics.
    The safety on the mossberg is located on the top of the receiver while the 870 places it near the trigger guard more traditionally. The difference in the safety placement will make the mossberg favored by most left handed shooters. While you CAN get a left handed 870 they are often more rare and more expensive. The second difference is where the carrier release is located. For shooters with large hands the mossberg offers a very comfortable carrier release where the thumb rests but for men with average sized hands or females the remingtons carrier release is located right infront of the trigger guard which is often more accessible. This is an especially important consideration if you're purchasing a tactical variant of one of these guns - the mossbergs carrier release on a tact shotgun is especially clunky when placed beside a pistol grip. The third difference ive noticed is the shell gate on the remington and the absence of the gate on the mossberg. Often new shooters will find they pinch their fingers while trying to load shells into the remington. This can be a very big issue for females with long finger nails.
    Realistically this is a preferential choice that is incredibly hard to make when you have no gun experience to draw from. As a default I would suggest left handed shooters, males with large hands and shooters with opposite ocular dominance to the dominance of their hand to consider mossberg and make an effort to study/shoot a mossberg first. I would suggest female shooters (with short finger nails) or shooters who intend to buy a tactical variant to consider purchasing a remington.
    Another note that I often hear from people unfamiliar with these guns after shooting 2-300 rounds straight is that the mossberg feels "cheaper" and tends to rattle more than the remington. This is on purpose and youll notice that after a few 100 rounds the mossbergs action stays very smooth while the remington will start to get a bit stiff until cleaned. That being said the remington does feel more sturdy and of higher quality for the first few hundred rounds. This difference of "feel" is preferential as it really wont effect the quality of performance that either gun boasts during a day of shooting. This difference does impact the shooters enjoy-ability while shooting.
    The performance of these guns is virtually mirrored and almost any inadequacy either gun offers can be compensated for with some sort of mod as the availability of mods for these two guns are endless. Any gun collection worth its salt will find a home for both of these classic guns.

Esstac six shot velcro side saddle, aluminium follower, Wilson combat safety and extended mag spring, Remington tactical choke, picatinny rail. Non-mim extractor. Magpul stock and forend. One piece, six shot magazine tube. 18 1/2 inch barrel. QD mount on stock and on replaced mag cap. Streamlight tlr-1 mounted on forend with Magpul cantilever mount.
    Strictly a home defense gun, loaded with #4 buck. Purchased in 2014. Runs like a champ.

    People that think the 870 has bad rust issues, that's not a problem as long as you clean and lubricate your firearms ocassionally. All you got to do is coat it with some clp on the outside and let them metal soak it up good, and it won't rust. Just take a paper towel, put a dab of oil on it, then put a thin coat across every surface of it after you're done hunting every other time, and you're good to go. That's really what you should do with every firearm you own.

    Good video. As a longtime 500 user and a factory-certified 870 armorer, I can find no fault with the information that you provided. Viewers might be interested to know that while Mossberg likes to tout that the 500 was the "only" shotgun to meet the 3443 standard, that's because Remington never submitted the 870 for that particular testing. I have no doubt that the 870 would meet that standard as well. From experience, I will say that the 500 will never be quite as "smooth" as the 870 when it comes to operation, but that's a fairly minor point. They're both good shotguns and it really is a "Ford vs Chevy" type of decision.

    I have had a Mossberg 500 Regal in 20 gauge since 1982. It was the first shotgun I bought with interchangeable chokes. (it takes Invector chokes). It was my main grouse hunting shotgun in the 80's and 90's when we still had grouse populations. It still is a good, solid shotgun. The Regal was Mossberg's premium Model 500, and when I bought it I thought it compared favorably with the 870 Wingmaster for significantly less money.

    I got both of these at Walmart. The Remington 870 Express for $287 & the Mossburg 500 for $254. I noticed at the store the 870 had some surface rust starting. So when I got home I rubbed it down real good with some 0W-20 synthetic motor oil till rags were clean. I had the same deal with my Remington 700 SPS. It started rusting the 1st week I had it. I think their quality & control has gone down hill. The Mossburg with the Aluminum alloy reciever it should never rust. Went out and shot both of thd yesterday for the first time. Both performed flawlessly. The 870 is a bit heavier because of the steel reciever. I do believe I like the Mossburg a bit better. If you are looking for an inexpensive entry level hunting shotgun, both are a good choice and Wal-Marts price cant be beat.

    I have a Maverick 88 and a Remington 870 Classic Trap. That's the lowest priced and highest priced of each. I shoot trap and skeet with both of them. They're both excellent shotguns. The Maverick is basic and doesn't have anything fancy on it. The Classic Trap is all about fancy and has a Monte Carlo stock and a 30 inch barrel. They both shoot great.
    I bought the Maverick as an extra gun, on impulse. I bought the Classic Trap because I wanted a dedicated Fancy Pants Trap Gun. The prices were $180 and $800. Good deals on both.
    The only difference in function that I notice is that the Remington stays cleaner longer and I think the action is a little smoother. Nothing that's a deal breaker.
    It's really funny when I use the Remington for skeet, nobody bats an eye, but when I use the Maverick, someone always asks about it because it looks like a tactical shotgun with 28 inch barrel. I'm shooting in the 20's with a $180 shotgun and they're using $5000 Beretta's shooting the same scores. I think they're racist against black guns!

    As a gunsmith of 40 years, building many guns lock stalk and barrel, the 500 is best. It comes a part with a ballpoint pen and every part can be replaced esaly on the kitchen table. The 870 on some parts needs to be replaced by a gunsmith or the factory. I've worked on many though the years. Have owned both since a young fellow and there both great proven guns, can't go wrong with either but for me and hunting with and working on both, I'm a Mossberg man and a fool for small game hunting.

I still don’t consider myself an expert but I have around the 870 and the 500 quite a bit since they are the most popular ones I’ve seen due to price point. I’ve witnessed more failure to fire from the Mossberg 500, and 590 than the
    870 due to light primer strike and
    zero from any 870. I ended up buying a $200 870 for my son and it never had a failure to fire no matter how many rounds fired or how poorly it was cleaned. I had to inspect ever one that failed on the range for safety of children and I don’t recommend Mossberg for that particular use. I’ve owned both and only still have the 870.

    This is becoming the most drawn out rivalry in the gun industry!
    If you like a gun that fails to eject once every 50 rounds but it's heavier then get the Remington.
    If you like a gun that ejects everything all the time but is a little lighter then get the Mossberg.

    I own an 870 and my friend owns a 500. The biggest difference I see is the quality. The 500 has a lot of excessive wobble. Its never as solid as the 870. Holding the 2 you can feel a real difference. However, due to the safety placement and action button, the mossberg is superior when using a traditional stock. If you use a pistol grip the the 870 is the clear winner as it's button layout isn't effected by different stocks.

      Brian Healy the 500 was designed to looser tolerances because of its military trials

    • @elche1976
      @elche1976 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brian Healy As mentioned, it's constructed for that loose tolerance. The 870 is prettier but in my experience, I've experienced and also seen way to many jams when cycling. Never had that issue with a 500. Maybe it's the dual extractors, maybe it's the loose design. either way it works and gets the job done every time.
      If you want to shoot a pretty gun that jams, buy an 870. You want something that works, but a 500.
      If I were forced to buy an 870, it'd be an older one from 10 years ago or older. their quality has gone downhill.

    As much rabbit hunting I've done in 30 years ... At one time I've owned both Mossberg 500 and Remmy 870 in different gauges , I've owned over 40 different shotguns in different makes and gauges through out the years .... Mossberg 500 is crude ! Like aiming a 2X4 or left handed golf club ... But it get job done ... Let's talk about Remington 870 express... Same as Remington Wingmaster ? No, and ...yes ...Same metal parts yes , metal finish rough and stock is cheap , I've owned 4 of 870 expresses , beat living shit out of all 4 of them in brush ! Wood was battered so bad , I had take stocks off replace them with plastic stock just to sell gun ... But both are good hunting guns !!! They get job done , Remington 870 pointed better , felt better than Mossberg 500 , so my pick out of the 2 guns ,I'm going with Remington 870 express ... I'm more of an Ithaca 37 fan ! That a fine slick pump shotgun , I do own a few Remington Wingmaster (12,16,20GA) they are way smoother and slicker than cheaply made Remington express...

    • @hquiller
      @hquiller 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jabshier1980 True. I have one Wingmaster, and the action is way smoother than the Express. But the price between the two is way different. Anyway, both get the job done! I won't sell any of those 870s, because they are gifts from my Dad. The sentimental value is higher that the price of the gun.

    I’ve owned both in basic (express) versions; have a wingmaster now... Remington 870 express have been poorly made since the early 2000s. 500s have always been cruder by comparison to pre-2000 870s. Both will go bang and kill ducks. Get whatever fits better. If you have money and want a pump: a browning bps, wingmaster, or nova/super are better made.

    If they made a Remington 870 wingmaster of the quality it had back in the day but they got rid of the shell lifter, made the safety like mossberg, increased its stock shell capacity and out a coating that could resist the humidity and saltiness of a tropical environment.. I'd have the perfect shotgun. I love the thoughtfulness of the dexterity in the controls of the mossberg. But I love the fit, finish, feel and sturdiness of my wingmaster

    I like the Remington 870 way more than the Mossberg 500 for a few reasons.
    After shooting thousands of rounds through the 500, it starts to eject loaded shells out of the bottom of the receiver when the action is pulled. This happened on my dad's 12 gauge 500 and my 20 gauge 500.
    Another thing is the spring inside the thumb safety likes to break, causing the safety to slide up and down on its own.
    I have never seen anyone have problems with the 870, nor have I had any.
    Again, this is after thousands and thousands of rounds.
    So, some people may never shoot as much as we shoot these, so you might not have a problem with the above issues.

    • @elche1976
      @elche1976 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. I'm pretty much the opposite. When I was looking at shotguns, I liked the setup of the 500. Went shooting with my cousin and his kids who had 870s. Jam after jam. They looked pretty and were smooth in demonstrating... but in shooting, issues. Mossberg has been excellent. Thousands of rounds at this point. Also interesting, 2 of his kids have moved on to the mossberg.
