    The only thing I don't understand about this is:
    How is it that the side eject option on the gun can give your position away, but an enormous blast from a double 0 buck shot round at 25 yards from a twelve gauge shotgun and the sound of re racking a new shell does not? Makes little sense to me.. I see this logic for rifles at moderate ranges but a shotgun? no way jose.. You pull that trigger and the whole world knows where your at.

    • @kevinharker768
      @kevinharker768 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Maybe they mean it this way:
      You're in a hidden position and the intruder is around the corner from you or in the hallway, whatever the layout of the building is, and they can't find you. You fire a shot, it's loud, bad guy is still trying to find you and you rack the weapon. Say your she'll flies out the door or past a half wall and they spot it. I don't know. I now see your point clearer after writing this but he must've had a good reason to say it haha.

      if you are inside a building with a lot of corridors and hallways, the gunshots will echo and it will be hard to distinguish exactly where it's coming from (especially with all the other gunfire). When the shell ejects you can see which way it flies from so you know which side they shooter is on. This is only applicable in the case that you are already detected, such as in a gun fight

    • @TheCharleseye
      @TheCharleseye 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    To each their own, you can't go wrong with either but I have used both and I lean towards the Mossberg and prefer it for several reasons.
    Dual extractors for shells with the Mossberg where the Remington only has one, a solid barrel bolt lug lockup, I find the slide release more comfortable and not having to readjust the hand, the open shell feed for high-stress situations and another one that people often mistake for a defect is that the Mossberg has a bit of play in the forend which actually allows for easier cycling in any of the slightest misalignment problems with the slide arms. My friend's Remington has no play in the forend and on the outward appearance it would appear to be better built but the slightest misalignment problem with the slide rails caused a huge crack down the middle of the forend under normal cycling and he shelled out some serious money for his Remington while my Mossberg Maverick was only a couple hundred bucks. The one thing the Remington has the edge is the steel receiver but I'm not sure that it's really a deal-breaker. I actually prefer the Mossberg Maverick to the Mossberg 500 because it has the safety location on the trigger group like the Remington. I highly recommend polishing the internals of either with a felt wheel and polishing compound on a Dremel to eliminate any casting flashes to help with smoothness and reliability, remember smoothing instead of metal removal. Have fun and stay safe.

    • @harleyutterback8218
      @harleyutterback8218 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hunter Jordan His was older the stock is still in pristine shape but the forend got a crack down the center from fatigue. Most Mossbergs have a little side to side play while the Remington is stiff. My understanding is that under any misalignment or malfunctions if it is forcibly racked that the tight tolerances place the stress on the forend. For an older shotty it's a reliable beauty with the exception of that.

    • @harleymichael83
      @harleymichael83 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a somewhat common problem if you do a Google search. I don't think it''s just Remingtons I'm sure but any kind of wood forend but from what I understand the tight tolerances stress it a little more. Nothing to really sweat, all that much excuse for him to get a new furniture set for it. Still cycles really well although I did notice his action release is a little more difficult to depress than that of that of the Mossberg.

    • @harleymichael83
      @harleymichael83 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hunter Jordan In all honesty I think most modern pump shotguns are created equal in terms of reliability. Most of it just comes down to personal preference, I never understood why Remington didn't use the dual extractors. As a Mossberg fan one distinct advantage I think the Remington has is the steel receiver. One thing is for sure I trust a pump shotgun in a home defense situation more than a semi-auto just because they'll feed just about anything where some of the semi-autos seems a little more picky.

    • @harleymichael83
      @harleymichael83 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The part I was referring to is the shell extractors that grab the shell out of the chamber not the elevator. The Remingtons only have one and the Mossberg has two.

    • @Ephem13
      @Ephem13 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the fore grip release is only a consideration for first round, once it's been fired they release automatically. That being said I never have to change my natural hand position thus I have several accurate shots in a short amount of time. Speed does not win in life or death situations, the accurate shot wins. Not to mention you need to be deadly accurate with a shotgun in a home defense situation as the buckshot hasn't expanded more than a few inches.

    • @SynchronizorVideos
      @SynchronizorVideos 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can put a reverse safety in a right-hand-ejecting 870, or you can just use the standard safety left-handed, it's not hard with practice. There are also fully-reversed left-handed 870 models.

    • @Ephem13

      ***** All of witch is very, very true. The reasons I bring it up is left hand guns tend to cost more and why learn to practice something extra when you can avoid it all together. These two shotguns are so close in every category that it's going to be the little things that make a difference.

  • @CaeruleanWren
    @CaeruleanWren 10 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    I must admit, I find it interesting that the first two things he mentioned for ergonomics on the 870 are the two things I hate most about it. I can neither rack the first shell nor turn on the safety without moving my shooting hand. That's always seemed dumb to me. I thought that Mossberg just had a patent on the behind-the-guard action release until I learned that the 870 came before the 500. Besides those two things and the lift gate, I'd take either gun.

    The ultimate bottom eject shotgun, the Ithaca 37. Find an older Deerslayer 12 gauge or a Ithaca 37 DS police version with the longer magazine tube. I have had Ithaca's for years and they are tough as nails. I do have a Remington 870 for defense use these days and it will do everything the Mossberg wishes it could do, especially since mine is 30 plus years old and is steel. Of course I could have gotten a Mossberg 590 but I couldn't afford it so I snagged the 870, I got it used for what I would have paid for a Maverick 88.

      Well, my understanding is that it is hard to tell where a big blast came from indoors and in urban areas (places you would generally be using a shotgun) because of the way the sound bounces off of hard objects. A shell dropping does not have the same awesome concussion and its sound would be limited to a specific area. Now, that being said, I do agree we are splitting some hairs here.

    I think i understand his point with ejection. If the shell lands at your feet, it could land on your shoes or lightly on the carpet or whatever floor is below you. With the side eject, you launch the shell out of your way, possibly going around a corner or hitting the wall with the force of the ejector. The enemy also might see the shell fly

If you're in combat, neither matters, because you're going to be making a load of racket and I doubt a shell flying out the side will give away your position while using a short barreled shotgun, LOL. Great video guys, really enjoyed it!

    I had a 1970s 870 Wingmaster with 28 inch non vent rib smooth-bore barrel and combat ringed fore-end. Threw a mag extension on it so it held 7+1 and I kept the barrel 28 inches. It was a big boy, very light recoil, and it was my go-to shotgun. Paid $100 bucks the day after I graduated High School, and I sold it last year to buy a pistol. It was the smoothest shotgun I've ever had/fired. That's out of Mossbergs, A Winchester 97, Stevens, and some lower end 12 gauges. Man I need to get another 1.

    I have to say the tang safety for me is much better than a cross bolt one. And a bottom ejecting/loading shotgun would be much slower to feed and run and gun with compared to a side loader. You can't chuck a shell in and feed as you go or throw a different type of shell in ie: a slug. Hence why they aren't as common.

      ***** It's not simply about what's cheapest. It's about economical AND durable. Mossbergs are like the AKs of the shotgun world. They have higher tolerance, less precision, which is exactly what makes them so popular for so many different organization.

    I think that we are going with the mossberg for several reasons, mostly its ability to perform under less than ideal conditions and its pricing is side by side with the remington. The deal breaker is its good performance. Thanks, ER

    Albiet the remmy seems like something to camp out in hell with, but empty it weighs more than the fully loaded mav with 3 extra capacity in the mag
    I held airguns that felt heavier than that mav and it's a non corrosive material product.
    I appreciate you reminding me why I have the remmy

    There’s also a little plastic bit that you can put in the back of the mossberg receiver to shorten it so the mini shells can feed correctly, just slide it in, made possible by the style of the loading arm

    I'm a lefty, and I have a Mossberg 590M full-size 12ga., and I also have a Mossberg 590M Shockwave 12ga., (the "M" stands for "Magazine" fed). I replaced the plastic safety buttons with metal one's from Brownells, and I've not had a problem with either of them (not that I'd ever had a problem before, but ... better safe than sorry). I have the original 10 round magazines that came with both, AND, I also have a 20 round magazine for both ... the 20 round magazines are just INSANE, lol.
    I also installed a "LS-250G Crimson Trace Shotgun Lasersaddle with Ambidextrous Control", on both 590M's. It brought my accuracy with the Shockwave up 100% since I fire the Shockwave from the hip as it has no stock, so shoulder firing is NOT an option. I use the Shockwave as my home-defense shotgun, loaded up with 2 3/4' 00 Buck, 8 shot. (The magazines are chambered for 2 3/4' ONLY)

    I used the Mossberg in Iraq when we had to switch from rolling our tanks to rolling around in humvees. Anytime I had to fire warning shots, I used the shotty lol it was just funner than using the M9 or M16 (or M4. When I enlisted we still used the "musket" and we got the M4 eventually). The ones we had had pistol grips and the regular stock; just depends on what cree got issued what, and luckily I got one with a pistol grip. They're just cooler and funner to use.

    nice vid. one thing overlooked is the Mossberg is much more left handed friendly than the Remington. the safety and the slide release are very accessible w/ the left hand. designers don't realise how many sales they lose by being righty centric. not just w/ firearms.

    Eric, I heard you say that you like the position of what you call the "operating bar stop" better on the Remington over the Mossberg. Maybe you've figured this out by now since this video is 7 years old, but if not, try this - while holding the Mossberg in the firing position, rotate your firing hand very slightly to the right and reach under the grip with your right middle finger. It's very easy to release the action with a very small motion of your hand and you don't have to completely release your grip - just a small rotation will do. After many, many years of owning and shooting Mossbergs I only recently learned this trick.

      I'm going to have to disagree with you about ergo's being subjective. No 870 can be put on fire, action released to load a round, and be fired with one hand.
      Now with that being said, I'd never turn away from owning an 870, it would be good to have as a reference gun only. As a back up to my AR15's? Hell no, I can get my 590 in action much faster than I could with an 870.
