      The FLEX is just fine; these guys are holding the stock like rookies; your thumb should never be over the top of a traditional style stock. It's a stock, not a pistol grip; your thumb should be parallel with the barrel. Not sure how these guys don't know this, as it's super basic fundamentals of marksmanship. I guess they've grown up around pistol grips where you do put your thumb around, and they're incorrectly applying that grip to the older style of rifle/shotgun grips/stocks.

    870 was my first shotgun and it was great but when people ask my option I always tell them the 870 is good but go with a mossberg. Remington quality inspection has dropped in recent years and the 870 has had very little improvements on the gun.

      I agree. I looked at a recently made Remington as compared to my Mossberg 500. I found the quality of the latter to be much more than the former. A friend of mind has an old Remington 870 from the 60s. Like the Mossberg, the quality over the new is remarkable as well.

      Got my first 870 Wingmaster in... jeez just around 1980? Beautiful burled walnut stock and the shotgun was amazing. I hunted with it for over a decade before it was stolen. Today's Remington is NOT the Remington of old. I purchased a Browning Light 12 to replace that old WIngmaster which I like. I'm looking at getting a Stoeger pump now. I like the take down and action of the Stoeger better than the Mossberg. Mossberg is a solid choice tho; you can't go wrong with it.

I bought the Mossberg 590 20 years ago. Gamechanger for me. Things got tight a few years ago and I sold it. I bought an 887 Remington to replace the 590. Not a fan. Bought a 500 combo with adjustable stock, fully rifled slug barrel(scope). Not unhappy with it. It isn't a 590.

  • @diversify210
    @diversify210 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I chose the Mossberg 590 of the Remington 870 for one reason and one reason only. The action release. The action release on the mossberg sits behind the trigger and allows it to be pushed with out ever taking your hand out of the firing position. The action release on the 870 does not allow that. Having to move your strong hand from the firing position to manipulate the firearm is not a good thing to me.

  • @wadedag
    @wadedag 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Agree - the Mossberg is better. But you missed what to me is one of the more important differences - loading is way easier on the Mossberg. Turn it over and you can drop shells into the slot. On the Remington, if I’m not mistaken, you have to push the elevator out of the way which requires a little more care and slows you down as a result.

      I have the FLEX model and reach the trigger just fine; these guys are holding the gun like rookies with their thumb incorrectly over the top of the stock and their grip about an inch too far back. Your thumb should be parallel to the barrel, not perpendicular. It's a mistake a lot of novice shooters make, treating a traditional rifle/shotgun stock like it's a pistol grip. I'd bet they aren't getting proper cheek welds either, because if they were, first hot load they fire and their thumb is gonna be smacking their nose.

    I absolutely love the FLEX model because you can transport it in a case that's as long as whatever the longest barrel is you want to run. Mine is stored in a 30" long case that fits perfectly in my tiny little trunk (2014 Chrysler Town & Country), as I can in seconds pop off the stock and unscrew the barrel, and just as quickly reassemble it. I'm thinking about making an aluminum walking stick that houses the barrel, keeping it free of debris and moisture, and just popping the stock and receiver in my backpack for hiking out to hunting spots. Might even make the upper part of the hiking stick house my fishing rod (disassembled) as well. Options are a great thing to have, and being able to offload the weight of the barrel to the ground as you hike I think is a great idea. Maybe even make a spot where the barrel can thread into the hiking stick to prevent rattle and not need to add foam inside the compartment.

    • @peteloomis8456
      @peteloomis8456 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have had my mossberg 500 for 40 years & what I did was took the pump ejectors out & the firing block & polished them using polishing stones then some 1,500 grit sand paper lubed with oil to finally polish the parts & it makes a night & day difference on how smooth the action is on them . The other thing is if it hasn't been shot enough to break it in & kept clean during that process it takes a long time before it starts to smoothen out . My 500 the safety is on top that slides up & down & once again if the gun gets used enough that will smoothen out or can be polished if you don't shoot that much or don't want to wait . The only problem I ever had with mine was that safety knob was plastic & mine broke one fall while duck hunting with a buddy but once we were out of the blind & back in the truck we drove to the nearest bait & ammo stop near us & they had a upgraded blued steel safety knob for it for under 10.00 . I have since then shot thousands of rounds through it without any problems at all & still use it on clays once in a while or to take out a pesky red squirrel or wood chuck at times lol . I bought a extra barrel for mine that's been shortened that I used for grouse & woodcock plus it shoots deer slugs well also & it also can be used as a home protection gun with that barrel & my pistol grips & sling I can put on it so it's pretty versitale especially since I only paid 40.00 for the barrel from a friend then had my machinist friend cut the barrel down & install the bead sight on it for free . The old 870s were top notch but that was long ago & from what I hear they are just a shell of what they were quality wise which is sad & I have been hearing that about a lot of other gun manufacturers that used to make & build good quality guns as of late & part of it is they are either made over seas or with parts made over there or they are skimping out on fine tuning & polishing as well as quality control .

    You guys aren't kidding about availability being so low on shotguns right now since the pandemic started. I was trying to buy one since last year and they were all sold out. It makes sense to me a lot of people are rushing to get them because in most states you don't need a permit, so you just have to pass a quick background screen. Hunting license applications have went up exponentially, and people are also looking for an entry level gun for home defense. Anyways, I was looking at 870s and the 500 for their price point and reliability. Both are a great choice but I went with the 500 because of everyones repeated reviews of the 870's jamming and the 500's quicker reload. If I were to get a Remington 870 I would probably invest in some upgrades and the end product might be better than the 500, but I tend to want something functional right out of the box.

    The 1950s price of the 870express adjusted for inflation is the price of todays wingmaster. So ofcause there are shortcuts. But the shortcuts of the 870 can be fixed. Polished chamber, non-MIM extractor, better bluing/parkerizing.
    The downsides of the Mossb are more diff to improve. Aluminum reciever(sorter lifespan), trigger housing can break off, lifter can pop out of the holes in the reciever.
    But I don't think anyone would be under gunned with any of them

    On the Mossberg 500A, I believe that was an easily replaceable *ejector*, not an extractor, that screws into the left, interior side of the action.
    The Mossberg 500A has two extractors on its bolt, which is one more extractor than the Remington 870 has. Therefore the 500A is more reliable than the 870 in that regard.
    Another advantage of the Mossberg 500: because the receiver is aluminum, that is one less part of the gun you have to worry about rusting! The 870's steel receiver will need constant guarding against rust.

It's hard for me to reach a tang safety if the gun is shouldered. My father had a savage model 99 with the safety on the lever. I loved that gun but he traded it for one with the tang safety. Cost me a nice buck years later. I have 2 Remington 870s 1 from the early 1960s and 1 from the early 2000s. The early one is much slicker but I cannot guess how many shells have been through it

    You're holding the grip on the 500 FLEX way too far back. You guys do know you're not supposed to wrap your thumb around the stock, RIGHT?
    That's the most rookie mistake ever. Your thumb should be pointed towards the muzzle, same side as the hand (thumb on right if right handed, thumb on left if left handed).
    The reason you don't wrap your thumb around the stock is so you don't whack your nose during recoil with a proper cheek weld.

Remington owners poo-poo my Moss 500, calling it cheap & nasty, but they can't shoot any better with their 870s, plus I don't have the extra weight to lug around. Negatives? You can't add a mag extension to the 500, but at 5+1 it's enough until there's some "Zombie Apocalypse" or warlike Space Alien Invasion.

    Do not buy a Remington 870 express. It is a pile of shit that isn't worth your time to make reliable. Old wingmasters (1980s and older), are fantastic. Mossberg 500s are rugged guns. Unfortunately, they've never fit or pointed well for me. Also, I hate how loose and thick the fore-end feels. Express RUST...
    This may get ridiculed but I have an express and the way I've kept it looking new for 8 years so far is a quick liquid wrench SILICONE spraying, end to end,in and out, every 4-6 months (or after it's been wet). Takes 1 minute. Wipe if dirty or just let it dry on & polish wood. If you use another brand make sure it is for metal,wood,plastic & rubber. I like liquid wrench because since they added ceflon it makes a longer lasting coat. If an express is treated with this and kept fairly dry, it should look new indefinitely. mine lookes better than it did new. More luster - zero rust.
    Other things stop rust too but this is faster and gets in every crevice and protects and is good for every part on a shotgun it gets into, unlike other products. And after dry doesn't attract dust n dirt.

    The older 500s, the non-FLEX hunting model 500s, the Maverick 88s (made by Mossberg) and the 835s will all have the standard length of pull. I would avoid the FLEX. Mossberg actions are not super smooth like the high end Remington wing master and police models, but they don't ever hang up unless you've got really bad ammo or you just short stroke the gun by limp wristing the slide (the Mossberg is meant to be pulled back on hard.) It's also a strong action with twin action bars and twin ejectors on the bolt. Good lock up that believe it or not has a locking lug that goes into the barrel shank. I like that the loading gate on the Mossberg is internal compared to the 870s which can catch the finger. You can simply drop shells into the gun and push them in, the elevator only comes down when you pull the action to the rear. I like the ergos on the 500, all the controls are perfectly accessible without changing the grip of the firing hand. The 590 has the open ended magazine/barrel similar to the 870, but to my knowledge there are no sporting barrel options for the 590, so if you need a barrel longer than 20" and you need a choke, or you need to be able to use a rifled barrel for hunting in states that make you use shotguns for deer, it will be relegated to being a security gun or for plinking/non-competitive clay shooting. That being said I've known people to hunt even with an 18.5" riot gun, both upland birds and boar (with foster slugs.) For my money the Mossberg is the best, Remington's QC has been going down and down and down, which is a shame because older 870s were a thing of beauty.

    Their problem is that they're resting their firing hand too far back. Get a high and tight grip, forget about the slide lock, as long as you have positive control of the weapon it won't come out of battery. And if you want a bit of a heavier mossberg you've got the 590 and the 590A1. So literally I have 0 problems with mossberg. My first shotgun was a $50 maverick 88. I put over 3,000 shells through it in a matter of 2 months with no issues.

    I have an older 870 and a modern 500. The 500 doesn’t like to cycle some rounds, the 870 it’s it all and is easier to shoot. The plastic receiver feels like junk on the 500 to me. When I went to upgrade parts on my 500, it quickly found out one way mossberg was saving money was by using Maverick 88 parts, in this case it was a slide. I had to buy an actual mossberg slide tube to be able to use aftermarket stuff.
