I learned this method on my very first quilt. I made a throw for my mom. Had it bound, ready to gift, and she mentioned she needed a new king size comforter for their queen bed. Off came the binding, and on went borders. Luckily the throw was almost exactly the same size as the top of the mattress, and the borders look like they were planned for the drop! A really good technique to have!
I am so grateful to you & other quilting YTers for sharing QAYG videos! After drooling over various quilts on Pinterest for months I wanted to try quilting myself, but the idea of putting such huge chunks of fabric together on my kitchen table was rather petrifying. Thank you so much for this.
My husband when you said "Domestic sewing machine" "The existence of a domestic sewing machine suggests the existence of Feral sewing machines..." I laughed for a while so I thought yall might giggle too.
Ha ha! A feral sewing machine, like a cat, might only work when it wants to. It would have to be set up in a sunny window. Prefers oil from canned tuna. And it might be hurt if you paid attention to the serger, Juki, Featherweight... All fun names for cats! Speaking of ferals, My housecats, formerly feral, love when I sew. One likes belly rubs and lays on fabric and supplies , and soaks up attention. The other, more reserved, becomes kitten-like, and I have to keep fun choking hazards such as spools of thread and trimmed threads away from him.. Once he had thread attached to the spool wrapped around the table legs and a good length of the had spit so yeah, choking hazard.
I really love the fact that at the end you said you could do it to add on to a short quilt or one that someone has just outgrown. I had thought about this before, but never attempted it because I thought well that’s got to be wrong or somebody would’ve done it by now. I should’ve tried it, but now that you say it’s OK, I guess I will!
you changed my QAYG world!!. JUST Last week I had pulled out 3 rows of stitches to try to get the back fabric to line up with the front when attaching blocks. NOW THIS!! i attached 4 blocks in a row in 2 minutes!!! I can't thank you enough for the perfect timing of this video.
I just found you about a month ago.. I have watched and rewatched!! I just love everyone these videos!! Each time I learn something new!! Thank you Karen!! You are one smart Cookie!! ❤
Thank you for this video. Not only does this quilt help us get rid of scraps that we never knew what to do with, I feel that this will be great fun and help me develop my quilting skills, as I’m not very advanced, because it helps me with the ‚3D-thinking‘ as I like to call it. And it’s doable and will look good even if it’s not 1000% perfect, that’s the fun of the pattern. Thank you for the useful tips Madame😊
Thank you, Karen. This method gives me hope that it's possible to make a quilt, all on my small, home sewing machine in my tiny apartment. Gonna try it!!
thank you so much for sharing, and showing this method of quilting. as a newbie i am absorbing so much information. and learning by my mistakes, its all good fun.
First of all, I must say I love your glasses, they make your face pop! I like this technique, clean and simple. I have a too short quilt, I may try this on.
Great video, I have a longarm but occasionally like to make small quick projects on the sewing machine, this is a great method for them. Thanks, loved the beautiful quilt.
You ask for it. Here is another Quilt-as-you-go video. This is a really used method to know so be sure to watch to the end. Thank you Birch Living for sponsoring! Premier Pro has given me so much grief this week. I'm hoping that the update solves the problem.
I really love this video. I am a very beginner quilter and quite daunted by the whole quilt sandwich thing. I have sewn a couple of quilt tops together and they have turned out bigger than Ben Hur size. Consequently that's as far as they have got and will probably stay that way now. Will give this QAYG method a go as it makes so much more sense. I LOVE your colours and layouts. Thanks from Australia.
Thank you for your free download and a great way to stitch and flip a quilt x I will have to read it a few times to get the steps right but I know I will enjoy making some for our young people leaving care homes xx
Also when cutting WOF, start the cut on the FOLDED side. This will help prevent wiggles that are unrecoverable as the open edges are easier to re-align.
Karen, this is wonderful. I have so many blocks unassembled because I have no idea how they need to be quilted and I don’t live in an area where there is a long arm quilter. I would like for you to show this technique with on-point blocks. I’m sure it can be done the same way. Thank you so much for this and all your videos.
Just the tutorial I need right now!! Made a quilt for my 94 yo mother, just a throw but she liked it so much she wants to use it on her double bed so I need to add more border on sides and bottom-perfect for this method!! Thanks Karen!!
Thanks Karen, I just started using leftover fabrics to make a throw quilt for my daughter. I'm going to use QAYG method. Keep making great tutorials ❤1🧵🪡🎉
Karen, I love your videos. I always learn something. This is no different. This method simplifies the QAYG method and one I have been looking for. Thank you for sharing.
I learned so much from this one video! I am excited to try the basting powder as I live in a place where I can't go outside to spray baste when I need to all the time. Great method that makes so much sense. You've demonstrated it so simply! I'm excited to try it and see where else I can apply this technique!
Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦 wow thanks so much for your details on how to keep it "straight", I did a QAYG and it went a little off. It's doesn't look bad, actually adds a little unintended creative flair. I did a double putting the block in the middle and working both ways. There is a YT video I was inspired by. Thanks again❤ keep well 😊
Great video. I love the tip of using a ruler to eliminate the 'dog's hind leg' when cutting strips - best tip on this I've seen. I'm going to try quilt as you go.
This is an awesome video. Thank you so much. I've been struggling with curves/elbows in long strips and never thought about putting a ruler in them to make them nestle up to the other. I use a Stripology ruler to cut strips but they are only a straight add getting both folds to align.
At my age, I can strip but flipping may be too much. Just a little humor from a 78 year old. Love you videos.
😂😂😂
This is not just a good Quilt As You Go video. It's a wonderful pattern just for using up strips. Thank you!
Thank you
Totally different method than I had imagined when you said "strip and flip" Karen. Great way to use all those scraps.👍♥️🇦🇺
One day I should do a video on 10 Quilty terms that sound dirty
Reminds me of the classic quilting book by Eleanor Burns, “Still Stripping After 25 Years” 🤣
I love this idea. This eliminates the look of potholders sewn together like the only QAYG method I know. Thank you!!
I learned this method on my very first quilt. I made a throw for my mom. Had it bound, ready to gift, and she mentioned she needed a new king size comforter for their queen bed. 🎉🎉🎉
I gasp every time I see the quilt on your bed, it’s so beautiful!
Thank you 😊
I gasp as well they are so beautiful. So colorful..! I love her videos.
I'm really loving this series
🤗🤗🤗
Same here 😊

Over the years you have helped me so much can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done
Now my brain swirling with ideas. Great tutorial!!! Thank you so much for sharing.
This is just brilliant Karen! You continue to amaze me with the depth and variety of your quilty knowledge.
🤗🤗🤗
My husband when you said "Domestic sewing machine"
"The existence of a domestic sewing machine suggests the existence of Feral sewing machines..."
I laughed for a while so I thought yall might giggle too.
LOL…there are commercial machines
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts Oh I know, He's just making jokes :D
Thought your husband's comment was so funny I shared it with my husband. He laughed and said, "Quilters of the Serengeti!"
@@janiewilliams5803 Oh I like that for sure! ^_^
Ha ha!

how come you manage to push me to try new and more difficult things??? and I like it (plus like the new quilts made)..thanks
Karen, you are the BEST !! Thank you for everything you do for us .... Hugs & luv
Thank you
You're one of my favorite TH-camrs. ❤. I recommend you to every quilter I know .
Thank you

Finally -- a Quilt As You Go design that I actually want to make! Thank you for including the info for different sizes!
You are such a good teacher! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm going to try it.
I use my serger to sew these flip and stitch sections together. Very quick assembly. Sometimes I use minky remnants for the back sections.
you changed my QAYG world!!. JUST Last week I had pulled out 3 rows of stitches to try to get the back fabric to line up with the front when attaching blocks. NOW THIS!! i attached 4 blocks in a row in 2 minutes!!! I can't thank you enough for the perfect timing of this video.
Wonderful!
Another wonderful video about more scrappy bits…I have so many I’ve been tidying them up at home! Pity we’re away caravanning!
Thank you for sharing this process. The video is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
It never occured to me to make a quilt bigger after it was finished. That is great information to keep in the back of my mind.
Never fails. I always learn something to make my quilt better or easier to make. Thank you, Karen.
Karen, I love your videos. You are so informative and helpful. Thank you💖
I love the pattern for this QAYG tutorial. 💖 Thank you for sharing. 😊🌹🍁🍃
Thankyou Karen!
This looks like a great way to make a small project quickly.
Time for this old dog to learn a new trick!
For true quilt as you go, I would sew the strips directly onto the batting and backing.
I just found you about a month ago.. I have watched and rewatched!! I just love everyone these videos!! Each time I learn something new!! Thank you Karen!! You are one smart Cookie!! ❤

This was a super informative video. You offered rationales for batting and squaring up many thanks, waving to you from Michigan.

Fantastic, a row by row quilt is on my list of want to do. Thanks for sharing the possibilities. 👍❤️😊
Really Karen, when I watched this, this will be a very interesting project where scraps are concerned. Thank you for sharing Karen.♥️
First of all, I must say I love your glasses, they make your face pop! I like this technique, clean and simple. I have a too short quilt, I may try this on.
You are awesome!! I made a picnic quilt following one of your videos and love it!! It was a crazy quilt using fat quarters!!!
Nice
Love how this quilt turned out! Will be referring back to this tutorial
Another excellent tutorial Karen. Thank you. Awesome and less unnecessary bulk

Love the quilt and the method. I like that the piecing is done like usual.
We absolutely LOVE our Birch mattress… got it about 3 years ago. Now that the luxe version is available I’m tempted to upgrade. 🤗

Thanks for your videos. I was curious about the magnets or weights you used for cutting long strips
Aaah - this is so cool! And I haven’t finished the last quilt-as-you-go idea! But I have always loved French braid quilts, and this just is too fun!
That is a nice way to do a quilt, I think I will give that a try ❤
Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦 wow thanks so much for your details on how to keep it "straight", I did a QAYG and it went a little off. Thank you for your quilt as you go tutorials❤
Excellent video and instruction; however, won't pressing backing and batting with a hot iron totally flatten the batting?
