Just a quick comment for those who have not yet gone through the school of hard knocks. THIS IS NOT A QUICK AND SKILLESS JOB. You really have to follow every step in order to get good results, otherwise you get crap. Do not try to dry sand your clear coat off either --it will leave deep scratches. If you don't like the way it turned out, don't panic! Use 2000 grit sandpaper to wet sand, after you have let your clearcoat dry at least a day. Than use some compound with a buffer to really shine it up nice. You can save your paint job this way.

Incredible! I wanted to sell my car to a dealership, but the clear coat peel looks so bad. There is no way they were gonna give me the price quoted. I followed your instructions to the letter. I spent $100 total. That included getting the paint code off the side of the door and getting the base paint ordered. Very smart to do that. It came out great. If you are on a budget, then this is a good way to do it. If you don't have any time constraints you can even get a paintshop perfect result by letting the base coat dry a few days and then lightly smooth sand it with really high grit and later do the same to the clear coat with an extra step of polishing the clear coat. You can get a mirror finish with some extra time and elbow grease.

I was going to ask about that. I assumed you would need to wet sand the base coat and the first clear coat with longer time between each, so thanks for clarifying. I’m assuming also that most orange peel would be removed with a wet sand. Any issues spraying 2K clear over acrylic base coat?

People tend to get a little hysterical about paint finish on older automobiles, this video is a great example of how a really quite presentable finish can be a achieved affordably & with a small amount of effort & work space available. No, this is not professional quality, but it is really amazingly good for spray cans & gives the car a new lease of life for a few years. Well done to you on sharing your skills on this as getting a cars paint professionally restored is almost beyond most of us financially now. And bonus is doing a section at a time is much easier than tackling the whole car at once.

    A few tips..
    - Once sanding is complete, PUT ON GLOVES. Your hands carry many oils, and washing them won't fix this. Touching the panel with your hands will transfer oils and compromise your work.
    - Clean panel with wax & grease remover on a clean lint free towel. Be sure to get all of the panel edges. Open adjacent panels (hood, door) to get to the edges if needed.
    - Mask off your area (if required), clean the panel again, then tack it.
    - Start your spraying in the "hard to reach" areas, such as the edge of the fender that's next to the hood, the edge by the door, the edge by the headlight, and the underside of the fender (wheelwell arch). Your normal back and forth spray pattern will most likely miss these areas. If the clear doesn't "envelope" the entire panel, and falls short on one edge, guess where it's going to peel first?
Just some constructive tips, otherwise you did a good job. Judging by the fact that it is a 10+ year old Hyundai, you just wanted it to look better, which you definitely achieved.

note : to get the best results from spray can paint - heat the can ( safely ) - until the can is heat soaked through to about 100* f 40-50*c this will help the paint propellants - it will thin the paint droplets and cause it lay nicely preventing orange peel appearance. still a nice job for a spray can.

Basecoat always looks like that when its wet. As long as it looks right when its dry your ok. If you see orange peel or even worse fish eyes or crow feet then you have to start over because you have contamination under the clear and will have to sand it out and then try again. Also make sure to use wax and grease remover before spraying anything to help avoid those problems in the first place.

@@ghostzzz3988 I painted it last summer and it didn't look as good as Mad4Motor's 😂 lol but it did give our 20 year old vehicle a facelift. I fixed an area on the hood. It was really hard to get a good angle and probably would have come out better if I could have painted the entire hood. Its slightly noticeable, but I just wash and wax it regularly and its not unsightly. I'd suggest anyone trying this to buy good quality spray paint and take the extra time to protect surfaces you don't want painted, even practice first. I had some overspray of clear coat and it's still a little rough there. But all in all, until I can have it done professionally I'm not mad at it.

He could get rid of that by wet sanding the clear coat 1 more time and then polishing it :)

He's not going to do that when the clear coat is fresh obviously, you need to wait for at least a week before you can do that. He probably done that afterwards :)

So quick update. I gathered materials for a rattle can job. I did find more clear coat damage all around my truck, sadly I think I will need a full body paint job. I havent taken it in yet to any shop, only looking around for prices to see what is most cost effective in my situation.

You know how to explain it short and simple with amazing results! Could you also polish/compound it on regular basis? Or will you polish away the paint, because it's to thin?
