    Love the channel. For me this is pretty much a no-brainer. The A7IV is the clear winner here, unless you do primarily still subjects. That 42meg sensor is great and add the pixel shift function really works well (again for still subjects). But if I had an A7R III, not sure I'd sell it for an A7IV.

    Good comparison. If you are shooting RAW stills, manually focsing, profiling the camera and manually white balancing the improved picture profiles on the IV become meaningless and the RIII still wins on image quality; delivering a 80+ megabyte file with more information than the 60+ megabyte file from the IV. Depending on viewing sizes this is quite significant. And even more significant if using the multishot function on the RIII. For video, general travel use and environmental portraits I would get the IV and for action the A9 or A1.

    Hey Matthieu, great video once again. I saw your A7R4 video as well, and I have a question.
    When the A7R4 is connected to a field monitor in VIDEO mode it loses autofocus function like face detection. (Many have spoken about this and given solutions ie Gerald Undone)
    However, video is NOT my concern.
    For still photography. Do you know if the A7R4 loses any autofocus functions while connected via Hdmi to a field monitor?

      I haven’t tried this with the A7R IV specifically, but for my reviews I recorded the live view in photo mode of many Sony cameras using an Atomos Ninja V, and the AF was working fine (I used this to show how AF points or face/eye AF were behaving for example).

    I learnt something from your post today: "Operation Customize > Different Set for Still/Mv". It really frustrates me that sometimes I forgot to reset the PP when shooting still photos. Now, I can let "video" have auto ISO, and still photo has a fixed ISO value. VERY VERY VERY useful indeed.
    To comment on your autofocus at minute 12:32, I totally agree. My A7R III focuses on the nose tip, the ear tip, or the eyebrows instead of on the eye/eyes. With A7 IV, out of 70, it only missed 1.
    However, both cameras complement my workflow as A7 IV is primarily on video and portrait, while A7R III is on general photos and works great with macro lenses.

    Thanks for posting this series of videos. The A7IV ticks so many boxes. I wish they could have gotten the lossless frame rate a bit higher (I take a lot of wildlife photos), but other than that it seems like a perfect camera. It's interesting how Sony's colors have meandered from green to red and back to green over the years. I'm currently shooting Panasonic GH5 and Nikon D500 and it would be nice to only have to carry one body with me in the field. I'm guessing the A7R3 autofocus is outclassed by the D500? I rented the a74 with 200-600mm and it was very competent! I did not miss the d500 at all.

    I just bought a Sony a7RiiiA. I understand they've made a few improvements. I don't shoot a lot of video. I can't remember the last time I did. I had a Sony a7iii which I sold recently and have been shooting with a Sony a7c. The a7c is a small camera that's great for travel but Sony has discontinued it and it is two years old. I'll keep it for travelling around town and as a backup. I should have the new one before I travel to the Baltics, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Germany.

    i'm currently deciding between 73 and r3 as i'm seeing very low and comparable prices on the used market ($1000-1200). the autofocusing looks a bit slower but obviously the r is a higher-tier model and makes more sense especially when at the same price, despite being a few months older with a few upgrades left out for the 73.
    i am concerned about the weaker iso performance, due to the higher mp count seen mildly in the 74's mp increase. from what i've seen so far the iso difference doesn't seem significant. is the iso difference notable or tolerable?
    i'm also concerned about moiré issues in the r3 due to lack of a low-pass (a-a) filter although it seems like the aliasing could be avoided and potentially taken care of when necessary. the 74 also seems to have dropped the anti-aliasing filter, i'm reading that it's not used for cameras with higher than the standard 24mp, as aliasing is more prominently introduced when the projected lens resolution is higher than that of the sensor. doesn't this mean the 74 is even more prone to aliasing than the r3? would the moiré on the r3 be an issue for general model, product and architectural shooting?
    thanks!

    • @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
      @MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can see for yourself in the video, there are ISO and moiré tests.
      For the aliasing, are you talking about stills or video?
      Moiré can be visible when dealing with thin and very detailed texture, like textile. Could also appear on architecture shots depending on the specific building I guess. I rarely had problems with the R3 and moiré, and if not too invasive you can remove it in post.

    • @kuchesezik
      @kuchesezik ปีที่แล้ว

      i'm sorry for any confusion, i was sparse with my terminology, i used r3 as shorthand for sony 7r3, not to be misinterpreted for the recently released canon. i was thinking that its video is downsampled from the higher resolution but now realized that the pixel binning shows the opposite. the 7r3 downsamples from 5k and not 8k, as opposed to 6k compared to the 73, which means that it's only using about 60% of its effective resolution. it's disappointing to read that the a1 also doesn't downsample from 8k into its 4k but that's another story. thus the 73's video looks (20%) better and i don't think it's worth it to sacrifice the extra video quality and smaller image file sizes for a bit of extra crop capability in photos.
      i'm still interested in comparable iso performance in higher pixel sensors and moiré in sensors without olpf as these issues affect all cameras. both could be easily suppressed in post-editing as far as photography goes but in video it's most certainly a nightmare.

    I already own a A7iv, which is normally fitted with my Sony 200 - 600. I wanted to upgrade my second camera, an A7Rii, which I use mainly for landscapses and macro, really just for the joystick and the battery type.
    I wanted to part exchange the A7Rii, along with a Tamron 28 - 70 RXD version and an Olympus lens I no longer use. The A7iv is still £2400 in the UK, but at London Camera Exchange they currently (Mar 23) have a special offer of £1500 for the A7Riii, so it is a no brainer and as a bonus, the part exchange is going to easily going to leave me with enough to purchase a new pair of binoculars, as well as the camera. Roll on Friday.

      If you're interested in landscape, architecture, general travel with the 16-35mm, it will be a great combo, especially for photography.

      USB and HDMI are two different things.
      The ports haven’t changed: Micro USB, USB C and Micro HDMI are present on the original A7R III and the ‘A’ version.
      On the ‘A’ model, various websites reported that the USB C port was ‘upgraded’ to a USB 3.2. However, in my understanding of the USB C specs madness, the speed remained the same (5Gbps).

      A7R III vs A7R IIIA
      The original A7R III has been discontinued and replaced by the A7R IIIA. The differences are minor, with the most noticeable thing to highlight being the extra resolution of the LCD monitor (2.36M vs 1.44M dots). An easy way to distinguish them is the absence of the Sony logo beneath the LCD monitor on the ‘A’ version.
