      After reading the specs of the A7RIV, I said the same thing. If you already own the A7RIII, there's really not as big of a jump as I would like in order to invest an extra thousand dollars. I usually skip at least one generation before upgrading my electronics.

      I think I'm leaning toward the A7R IV due to the fact that it has nicer "knipples" and it is just much more Bad Assier...although I am considering an A9 as well...decisions, decisions.

    As a former a7r3 owner let me add that if you are planning to use adapted glass with an mc-11, it gets temperamental at times especially when shooting f8 and above in studio. Sometimes the eye af will back/front focus even though it looks accurate with the af box. Also, if you shoot video and stills and switch the mode dial between the two modes too quickly when shooting a hybrid assignment, it messes up the video file. I didn't have these issues with the A9. Pixel Shift is worth its weight if you print. You only need Sony's software to combine the files and you can export a raw file afterwards that Lightroom will read just like a normal Sony raw file.

      They're most likely the expensive first party ones. Good if you want the same build quality throughout and keep your weather sealing on the grip as well. But honestly in the past I've exclusively used non-sealed third party grips on weather sealed cameras and never had any problems with water getting into them when I get caught in the rain or snow.

    I just upgraded to the a7rIV and I love it, but I upgraded from the a7rII, so I was primarily doing it for the resolution bump for my macro shots. I really can not stress how much I love the new form factor though... I do a lot of hiking with my kit, and primarily hold it with a hand strap, for quick access, and over a 4-5 hour period my hand would start to cramp and get raw in spots with the a7rII, but don't have that issue anymore with the IV, plus the deeper grip just feels like there is less likelihood of an accidental drop with a hand strap, once you are good a sweaty. Gave the a7rII to my wife and she has zero issues with it, so likely just depends on your hand size or how you carry it, because she prefers using a sling strap, instead of carrying it in hand.

    Great review Jared, as always! Two weeks ago I sold my R3 vor 2000 Swiss Francs, which I invested into the new R4. The step from the R3 to the R4 was not as substantial as was the one from the R2 to the R3. But Sony listend to us
    and improved the ergonomics and funcionality in several points, each of them not world-shaking, but in the sum resulting in a body which is more comfortable and thus a greater pleasure to use. I already owned most of the glass necessary to photograph anything, but could complement my lineup thanks to a bargain offer of the GM 100-400mm.

    the most important question I have is, does the new, deeper grip also offer more space between the grip and the bigger lenses? My biggest complaint with Sony thus far as been simply that my fat fingers don't fit. Shooting for even 15 or 20 minutes at a trade show with the A7III or A7R3 left me with scraped and sore knuckles.

    I recently upgraded from an a7ii to the a7rIII. I have been making a lot of prints lately (24"x 36" and larger) and I wanted my prints to be cleaner as they are generally viewed within 1'- 2' of where they are displayed. It was a very tough decision but the cost difference made the decision easier. I picked up the a7rIII used in like new condition with under 500 shutter actuations for barely more than an a7iii and the features and upgrades between the a7rIII and the a7rIV wasn't worth the extra cost to me.

    • @andrewfiedler4960
      @andrewfiedler4960 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you find the difference from the a7ii to the a7riii to be enough to justify the latter? Looking at $2000 a7riii vs a $950 a7ii. Or would it be better to go a7ii and get better lens?

    • @TheSk8deshtruction
      @TheSk8deshtruction 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewfiedler4960 I honestly believe it was worth it. The battery lasts me all day compared to using 2 or 3 batteries with the a7ii. The EVF on the a7rIII doesn't get near as much digital noise as the a7ii does in low light. Image quality isn't noticably different on small scale media but with large prints it's very noticeable. The other thing I noticed is the raw files of that a7rIII seem to be much more flexible. I personally love that a7rIII and I loved the a7ii. I will say if I was just starting out I probably wouldn't notice the difference between the two.

    Jarod, you kinda missed a couple of things. First, there are a number of reviews (e.g. Dustin Abott) that say that the A7RIII has better high ISO noise performance than its big brother. Second, you omitted to say that the A7RIII does not have the lock on autofocus performance of the IV. This is important for sports and bird photographers. In addition, the shutter of the A7RIV has been re-engineered for more longevity. There are some complaints in online forums about shutter life for the A7RIII. The key question is whether the IV is worth an additional $1,000. IMHO, the answer is no, the a7RIII is a great camera and there's no home run with the a7RIV, just a bunch of singles.

    Excellent comparison, sir! I have a question...I have zero experience with Sony, and have been a Fujifilm-X shooter for about 8 years, first with an X-Pro1. My main interest is obtaining the sharpest, most detail-rich images as possible, given the constraints of time and funds. As a landscape and product STILLS X-T3 shooter (no video), Lately I feel like I've gotten the most out of the APS-C format, hence I have been debating on selling my Fuji kit (reluctantly), and moving into FF, specifically the Sony a7Rlll and lenses like the Sony 16-35 f/2.8 GM, Sony FE 55 f/2.8, and the 90mm f/2.8 G Macro . Since I shoot 99% tripod-mounted, neither IBIS nor video interests me. So, my question is, for large print output (around 24"x 36" prints), how much of an improvement in terms of image sharpness, detail rendition, dynamic range, base ISO performance, etc., would I see over the already excellent X-T3 (combined with the ultra-sharp Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro lens), when using the a7Rlll and the Sony 90mm f/2.8 G Macro or Sony 16-35 f/4 tripod-mounted? Thank you, Jared!

    Coming off an a7r3 to the a7r4 - Now having shot with it for a month. I want my old camera back. The a7r4 images are WAY noisier and noise is experienced even at ISO100. 61MP is too much for this camera to handle. The good with the R4 is the grip, the AF system - really good. But as far as your hit rate and satisfactory image quality, the R3 wins hands down. Folks on the forums have to regularly denoise their images. How is third party denoising in your workflow allowing you to realize the 61MP of the r4? it doesnt. Short answer. The r4 does do some amazing things and I will keep it for those things but really, the R3 is better in most of the ways that matter. I will be buying a new a7r3 knowing what I know now. Shame it was a $3400.00 lesson.

    I have actually switched from an A9 to the A7R4. I do mostly wildlife and though the A9 was great my biggest issue with it has always been a need for more reach and the ability to crop or use APS-C mode with a 26mp readout has been amazing. Sure the A7R4 doesn't grab the moving targets as fast and I will miss some shots with the 10 fps vs the 20 fps but I that won't bother me as much as missing the shot that doesn't require super fast AF.

    Yes, that is what I did, I have them both now. Just nitpicking here Jared: the AF coverage is the same for contrast AF, not the same for the phase AF. The larger number of AF points in the IV allow to cover a wider area. This is quite relevant when shooting in portrait mode with eye AF. With the III the eye af will often not work as well. It does have a pretty substantial impact for who shoots portraits a lot. Also, the the IV has the real-time AF currently not available in the III. So the IV is a pretty substantial advancement in AF and imo deserves a full checkmark
