Now that i got my A73 you do this? why you do this to me Jared? why? WHY?! nevermind, i just got the real deal....i'm not ready to carry an A74 yet.....but i will....eventually....if i move in to Canada......in the next 10 years....
The Mrs bought me the A7iii in December. on a really good deal. £1350 brand new. The current price in the UK for the iv is £2400. the difference paid for my first lens. 24-105G. Your videos gave me the confidence to go in this direction. Also just picked up the Sigma 100-400. (based on your reviews)
I have an SIII in my cine rig, a 7III as the base for my med-wide lenses, and an RIII for tele and fast primes. I'm probably going to get a 7IV for my med-wide/B-cam for video, and use the 7III for a backup/timelapse/grab-n-go body.
The A7IV offers better support for the LA-EA5 adapter compared to the A7III, as it supports AF on A-mount screw driven lenses as well. The A7IV with LA-EA5 is a good upgrade path for people that still own a lot of A-mount stuff.
hey Jared, with so many options now from Sony and 3rd party manufacturers it would be awesome to have a follow up to this video with your idea of what is the right choice of "good glass" for the a7 IV. Choosing a7 IV over a1 I'd like to also not go G-Master all the way, cause this seems an overkill with my needs and skill level.
A74 main advantages for me are AF speed, huge improvements in video, like active stabilisation, better cropability better ergonomics, and anti dust function. I thought about 2nd body seeing dust on photos which got inside while me changing lenses.
I would buy a7iv just for 422 10 bit and cinetone. I already have to a7iii and I'd update asap. a7iii is a wonderful camera and I won't sell it. It would still be useful for photo and a second cam for video if needed.
Hey Jared, great review, however I feel that calling it a slight improvement on video is not true; I have owned both and the jump on quality with the 10bit files is huge. Specially considering the fact that you can use S-log 3 which makes a huge improvement on dynamic range.
Jared is right! 10 bit will always be better than 8 bit, agree but really, what serious videographer will pick the A7iv over the A7siii. If you are under the A7siii, it doesn't matter if you are A7iv, A7v or A7iii under is under. Jared is use to quality.
@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx if you can afford the extra $1000 and treat it mainly as video camera then yes Siii is the answer. But for true hybrid camera A7iv is much better in video than A7iii. Sure in a well lit studio like Jared has; the A7iii will works. But in most situation the color banding alone from 8bit is a deal killer. On top a7iv also have better dynamic, better color science, better auto focus, full size HDMI etc
@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx I actually have used both. Agree on the a7siii being better in video, except on 24fps where the A7iv is more crisp and detail due the oversampling. However if you do both and only want to take one body with you and your photography game is serious the a7siii is limiting. Oh and one fact, true that the crop on 60p is a pain, but tbh it is not a big deal for me as I can adjust framing or lens, and If I shoot 60p will be tighter anyway to be slow it down. And the ability to crop to apc/s35 and still having a high quality 4k is something I have missed on the siii. Again, I would say that you are being very bold, and that it will or not be worth it depending on budget and use case
totally true, everyone who has worked with the 4:2:2 10 bit of the a7sIII in comparison to the 4:2:0 8 bit of the A7III knows that there is an incredibly huge result in quality. With Slog3 and S Cinetone, combined with the Alister V LUTs it is such a nice image, where the A7III is not even close at. For me that's actually the biggest reason to upgrade, because I can use the a7IV now as B Cam for my A7SIII
I’m very happy with my A74 it’s my companion to my A7R3. My A74 is my go-to for street, sports, film and Mated usually to my 24-70 Gmaster or 200-600. My A7R3 is my Astro, portrait/studio, landscape body and mater with my 20 1.8 or 85mm. For weddings I can use the A74 to film and R3 for stills. The A74 enlarged grip is welcomed, new mode dials are helpful, swivel screen is better than the tilt. Full sized HDMI out is great. My wish list for the A7R5 is the A74 body with a RAW size selection ability like the D850 had. A major reason I didn’t upgrade from the R3 to R4 was no raw file size selection ability and being forced to shoot everything 62mp unless I shot Aps-c.
For a prosumer like myself that does little to no video, I weighed getting the A7ii vs the A7IV just recently and got the A7iii on a deal and I honestly probably still would get the A7iii no matter what. Normally when I buy a camera I have some regrets and say maybe I should have spent more and gotten a different one but this time I am just fine and quite content. After having multiple Sonys and Canons over the years I kind of come to the conclusion I really don't like the flippy screens either despite their usefulness.
I recommend the a7IV overall. It's Sony's PERFECT hybrid camera right now and especially at $2,500. All the video features that were not in the a7iii is here in the a7IV. If you're primary just shooting photography, then the A7iii will be the best for you and at a lower price of $2,000. Eventually you will want the video autofocus, 10-bit color and S-cinetone, so keep that in mind when you're going to buy the a7iii. I've upgraded to the a7IV and I love everything about it.
It's better for photography as well as for video work... 1. 33MP which is the sweet spot for all studio, sports, motorsports and action work, as well as not being too much for photographers in other fields. 2. Better (WAY BETTER) Eye/Face AF tracking (and not only is it better, it's also WAY faster too.) 3. Better (WAY BETTER) low light focus performance in terms of both accuracy and speed. 4. Better low light/high ISO performance. 5. Better color science (almost on par with Canon and Nikon) - meaning less time spent color correcting your images before you begin editing. If you shoot sports, motorsports, any kind of studio work, landscapes, wildlife or events - you WILL want those 33MP and you WILL want the near-perfect AF (there's literally no real world difference in AF between the A1 and a7IV - in 40 minutes of test shooting, both the A1 and a7IV had 85/85 shots in focus aka. 100% of the shots in focus.) And I don't think I even need to mention the amazing low light performance with both high ISO settings and the autofocus.
If you want videos get the A7siii. Don't waste your money on the a7IV. If you want photography get a like new body no scratches or dents are like 1600 that's almost a thousand dollars difference. Don't get scam by business.
@@Aroundtheworld-ew6rx Not necessarily. The 2nd native ISO of the A7S3 being at 12800 is not very practical for most applications. In dark scenarios with some available light (even run&gun), 3200 or 6400 ISO is enough. And at those levels, the A7iv significantly outperforms the A7S3. A7S3 is better for people who either light their scenes and shoot at lowest native ISO, or something like documentaries. Or people who really really need the 4k120p and ProRes Raw.
@@professionalpotato4764 Agree, Lights are essential. People forget videography and photography are art. If someone is shooting at high iso to capture an extremely low light scene, I'll recommend for them to take a class in lighting before buying any camera over 1000 dollars. Shooting sports or weddings could be the exception because capturing the moment is more important than photography or videography.
@Aroundtheworld 111111111 Depends. Lighting is a privilege not many people can afford whether it's manpower or financially or even a limitation of the location. It is impossible without a crew or assistants.
Pro video/photo guy here. I shoot video with the Sony FX3 and photo currently with the A7III. As soon as taxes come back (USA) I will be updating my photo body to an A7IV.
A7iii has an incredible sharp and high quality 1080p. I think that 1080p downscaled from 2k or 4k. I'm using A7iii 3 years. Always shooting 1080p 24-60-120 and export to 4k. Resulotion never deteriorates.
"these aren't your grandmother's electronic viewfinders" -- Your grandmother's viewfinder was a tiny and cheap plastic lens optical system in her snapshot camera that took 126 film cartridges and used flashcubes.
Focus mapping and the variable shutter are great, noteworthy features I wish I had in my Sony a7iii. If I were just starting out, I'd buy the Sony a7iv. That said, I love my Sony a7iii and if I were to buy another camera I'd probably rather save up and get something like one of the Sony a9 models.
If starting out I'll buy the A7III brand new for $1600 when it goes on sell again then buy a 35mm 1.4 Gm for $1400 totalling to $3000. Great camera and lens 👌 A7III is such a beautiful camera and when it goes on sell its so worth the price. You won't be able to tell the picture quality difference if it was side by side either. I'll definitely buy the A7IV soon and have both bodies to use.
Im just starting out getting in to photography and I just picked up the sony a7 iii with 3000 exposures for 600 dollars, with the sony 24-70 kit lens, and an sd memory card. I also found an 24-70 f2,8 gm mark 1 lens, second hand for 1000 dollars brand new condition. next step would be to sell the kit lens, and upgrade the sd card and buy a camera bag
I bought the A7III today instead of A7IV for the sole reason of having the tilting display. The "variangle" one of the A7IV is absolutely unusable for concert photography where I need to be quite discrete and take the least space possible in the crowd. Also I feel like a dork opening the screen to the side.
@@ameliadellavita I don't know about the performance. I've had the A7III for two months and I have to say I don't like it very much. The AF confirmation is false around 40% of the time, eye AF does not work at all in colored light it seems and regular AF is slow for flashing lights - it just seems to never be able to fully focus between the flashes (not talking about strobe lights, even just 1-2 Hz flashes make it unusable often); the dynamic range feels 2x worse than my old Nikons D600 and D750 (I am unable to push shadows at all without introducing extreme noise even at ISO 1600). But the tilting screen is great and even the resolution is ok for me.
At the time of writing this, here in Germany the a7 IV costs 2700 € whereas the a7 III is 1900 €. Either of these two will be my entry into the full frame world. But the 800 € difference makes me really insecure as to which model I should go with.
Same here in my case, currently here in Serbia there is a sale for both A7 III and A7 IV. A7 III is 1590€, while A7 IV is 2390€ and both are with 4 year warranty. I don't have any E lenses currently, only my Nikon D5200 with 18-200mm VR II lens, for which I guess I could sell for somewhere 450~500€.
I would buy the A73 in a heartbeat but it’s a 4 year old camera with the same price as when it originally dropped. If they dropped it to at least $1,500 or even $1,700 I think that would be a great deal
@@R221-e7t If I could find an a7iii for $1k - $1100USD I'd buy it instantly. I'm located in Canada, and they are selling used for around $1900 - $2100CDN.
I bought an A7III optical in mint condition, 50k shutters. Ebayer only interested in cameras with 10k or less. Crazy. So I paid 700 dollars for,the camera, original packaging and 3 batteries included. And like I said, optical and technical mint condition, if you are notmafraid of cameras with more than 20k shutter.
As we (apparently) leave the DSLR era of photography (2020 and earlier) and quickly enter in to the Mirrorless era (2021 and forward), how many of you think: a) it's an exciting time ? b) it's a suddenly become dull? To me, the art of photography of looking through a a real viewfinder to compose an image vs. an electronic viewfinder (is what listening to music on a record was to digital music today)? Am I wrong? I can't say I have a strong opinion either way I just want to know what everyone thinks about it.
Honestly I went from my A7iii upgrading to the A7IV mainly because of 10Bit. I’m heavy on colors within my work, so the extra color smoothness is something I wanted. Not needed but personal preference in wanting it. The A7iii is a beast as it is
If I were to start out with Sony I would easily go A74. If you have big hands holding the A73 sucks. I waited and waited for the A74 release, never came and I jumped onto the Nikon mirrorless. Amazing feel in the hand.
Welp I bought the A73 today and I am pretty satisfied by how you broke it down. I see I made the right choice not to spend the extra money. I'm coming from a Canon T5i so this is a big upgrade for me. I have pretty good glass and lighting knowledge so I'm sure I can get the best out of this camera. Great video!
Hey, I'm switching from Canon 60D and was whinking about a7IV, although it cost much more than a7III. (around 1000 usd)... do you think that A7III with f.e. Sony 24-105 is gonna be a great choice? Are you still satisifed with your choice or do you see some drawbacks which makes you regret not taking A7IV? Do use it also for video or just photo?
@@losiek008 I am really satisfied with the performance. I was shooting last night at a night Market, and it performed really well in low light. I’m using the Tamron 28 to 75 2.8. It barely missed any focus. I think the Sony 24-105 2.8 would be a great choice. Sony has good glass but it’s expensive. That’s why I went the Tamron route. Right now I’m using it for photos only. I had to buy a better and faster memory card to shoot 4K. So that’s on the way. The only drawback is that I can’t shoot 4K 60 but I can get around that. It would have been great to get the A7IV but I’m super satisfied with my choice. No buyers remorse here.
I started my photography last year. I’m using a Kodak az421 pixpro. I’ve gotten some AMAZING shots with this camera but feel an upgrade is necessary. Sony A7 IV looks like it may be it. The optional lenses alone make me want this camera. I’ll be back after a few weeks to update once the A7 is in my possession.
Hi Jared. I think your points about 1. buying used and 2. prioritising glass are bang on the money literally. I've recently moved to Sony and picked up a very nice used A7R IV at a very competitive price from my local camera store. That is going to let me get the FE 200-600 rather than having to think about getting the Sigma. New and shiny is nice but getting a deal brings a nice warm fuzzy feel. If I was weighing up between a III and IV I'd probably go for the III and either spend the extra on glass or really good filters or any other quality kit really.
Upgraded in late November when it came out, no regrets. The Autofocus is a noticeable step up in confidence, especially in lower light situations. The screen is more reliable in terms of exposure as well. I think at both 1600ISO which I often use it at, its slightly cleaner than the A7III? Perhaps the noise pattern is improved, at even 6400 ISO I prefer the noise pattern on the IV over III. The new body feels a lot nicer, also the buttons are nicer to click. Love the new flaps and doors. 33MP is the perfect sweet spot, I think the colours are slightly better as well. If you could bare the extra cost I highly recommend the IV, even tho the III is a perfectly great camera even in 2022, quality of life improvements will make you smile. Oh yea the menu is great too!
My a7III is a bit of a nightmare at times. I only shoot video on it so I can only speak about that. Steady shot? It's on but it may as well not be - handheld footage looks like the shooter is having micro seizures. It's fantastic in sunlight but the missing focus in low light is aggravating. Actually, what is more aggravating is the pulsing focus even though you haven't moved, your subject hasn't moved but the light changed. I won't bs you and say I"m a top notch videographer with years of experience under me but I want to do the BEST job I can at any given time. That means that I research, learn and practice. Any time I've shot a band with show lights ranging from somnambulant to frenetic it will be sharp in the white light and fuzzy in all the others. The focus will pulse between the subject at the front and , for example, the drummer at the back no matter what I do, in shooting technique or farting around with settings. I would be extremely willing to upgrade just for the real time tracking. When this one came out I thought, nah too much redundancy for me to be able to justify the expense. Now? I'm thinking, I'm thinking....
I just purchased the a7iv and I love this camera!, but I also own the a7iii and love it also, but for me, the dual sdxc ll slots, insanely fast new auto focus, improved color, improved view finder, new flippy pad, and new menu with many additional options and functions, also the 33mp sensor are worth the extra $500. In certain situations with low light, and overheating, also battery life, the a7iii still Rocks! and is better than the a7iv. I love both of these cameras, and use them just as much. The a7iv is like a poor mans a1.
@@TwProductions Tamron Trinity, 17-28mm f2.8, 28-75mm f2.8 and a 70-180mm f2.8, ❤ all three, sharpness is just as good as Sony and sometimes even better, for half the price. Thank you! Peace! 🙏
@@realJonSpringer I'm liking it a lot. I do like the feel of the Nikon better and the menu system. Other than that I really have no complaints. Plenty of glass I get to use on the e mount as well. That was the drawback of the Z. I use a A7IV at work. That's also a great camera!
Great video as always. One benefit of the silent shutter is keeping the shutter count down which really helps when you go to sell. Also replacing shutters is not cheap and it will reduce the need to do so. I just got top money for a A7RIV as the shutter count was only 1600 despite me taking an estimated 35,000 photos. If the A7IV was usable under artificial light in electronic shutter it would be a perfect wedding camera. My A9 and A7IV make a good pairing for weddings
I jumped on the A7III and for the remaining money i got me 2 lenses (samyang 45 and Viltrox 85), a hard drive, a LED light AND an PK adapter love my SMC F 50 1.4 more then ever
I started with my A7III and LOVE it. Now I have my A7IV and it's a love/hate relationship. I love the dual UHS-II slots, so now they both write extremely quickly. But im getting WAY too much flicker/banding in my photos. I shoot music concerts/night clubs and so I deal with production lighting. My A7III turned out beautiful photos with no issues. But now under the exact same conditions (same venue, same lighting) im getting a lot of horizontal lines going across my photos (flicker/banding) I'm not sure if it's a firmware issue or the new sensor, but it gets annoying.
Damn that's sad to hear, I have issues with banding on video at clubs with my a7iii as well as shitty stabilization so I've been considering upgrading to the iv
@@professionalpotato4764 I mean, if the shutter speed is the same value as the frequency of the light then it does lessen the effect. Which is typically 60hz but shooting a musical artists at 1/60 is not exactly feasible with all the movement that happens. But what im saying is that im shooting at the same venue with the same lighting production, the only thing that has changed was going from the A7III to the IV and my III didn't have this issue and can't seem to understand why exactly... the only thing I can think of, is the new sensor or hoping it can be fixed with firmware update. And unfortunately, antiflicker assist doesn't help either.
@@Chapa324 Did you see the part about variable shutter at 20:27 ? That should allow you to dial it in. Also, you can use a multiple of the shutter speed. You're not limited to 1/60; 1/120, 1/240, etc.
Probably needs a firmware update. Don't get trick by business, A7iv is not worth the price. The camera is worth 2k, but the chip shortage won't allow it to go to it's true price point. The A7iii is worth 1600 but they won't price it lower to incentivize people to overpay for the A7IV. I'm praying for the A1 to get a little lower.
I’ve already some good glass, and will switch next week from my a7 II for an a7 III used of good quality. I know, I don’t have always the last generation😅, but it’s good for my money , and permitted to me to invest in good glass 😉
Ugh. Can't decide between A7IV or A9II. Missing the fully articulating screen on my a7III now. So a7iv Need the silent shooting in mixed lighting too. So a9ii Can get a good cash back deal until tomorrow, pressure's on. Extra resolution and less expensive is nice... but the Silent shooting! Mehhhh
Hot take, hobbyist photographers who don't plan on printing their photos are likely never going to need more than 12MP considering that 4K monitors are the equivalent to 8MP.
I found the 12mp counter-productive. The noise was extremely blocky and it wasn't usable above 3200 ISO back when I used the A7S2. Is it better on the S3 now?
I admit, that when I got into photography, its cause I was doing tech support for digital cameras, and I thought I was da bomb at getting good photos. I was stupid. And the thing that I never caught onto until years later is that the glass is more important than the camera itself. If I had known then, what I know now, I'd have bought a lesser camera than a Canon 20D and got better glass with it.
I have the a7iii and good (well, I think it is) glass in the Tamron trinity. Watching this makes me think upgrading to the a7iv would be worth it after I get a couple more important financial goals done.
The a7iv at the price, its hard to beat especially if you have invested in E Mount. I have a a7iii as a super back up to my two main bodies. She still fights but her age is showing
I would have to go with the a7IV. The upgrades are worth the $500. I totally agree with the GLASS, GLASS, GLASS!!!! I enjoy the Sigma lens paired with a Sony camera. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Probably should have waited to get this over the r6. I don’t do video and basically just shoot street and some wildlife, but I use my Fuji when doing wildlife/birds
The reason I am watching this today. For early black Friday specials the A7 III is now $1,699.95 AUD while the A7 IV is $3,499.95. So it is over half the price. I am guessing the stores have a glut of these A7 III they need to get rid of before more new cameras for other manufacturers hit the market.
I purchased a new A7iii for $1600 with a 50 1.8 at the beginning of 2020. I then sold the body for $1200 in 2021 in lieu of an A1. If you're a beginner like I was then, I would definitely start with a used A7iii and then move up the A7iv when you become comfortable.
I do use a microphone plugging it into a hotshoe on A7III. I mean, my good old Sony XYST1M works even with a6000, so I don't understand what is different considering hotshoe in A7IV.
I have a sony a7iii It works great and I really dont have any issues with. I thought about upgrading it but it will cost me another $4500 on top of the body for the underwater housing that I use. So I will keep my a7iii and keep buying lenses. Next lens, Sigma 24-70 f2.8 art to replace the 24-105f4 I sold to buy a sony 90mm macro lens.
Which would you go with?
sony a7 iv without a doubt!!!!!

Sony A7 iii is good enough for me.
a7IV!! Upgraded from my a7iii and the differences are HUGE!!!!
2019 I bought a7iii w/good glass, I shoot stills and video, still thrilled with what this a7iii delivers.
A7III already suits my needs. I can use the price difference between the IV and III for leveling up my glass instead.

The a7iii does indeed have a hot shoe. I use the XLR-K3M. Works great!

I have an A7iii. Love the idea of someday getting an A7iv. At the moment though I have been investing in glass.

While i love these sony cameras... i love how crisp and saturated the color in Fros videos are.

Did you forget about focus breathing compensation and gyro mode stabilization.
The A7IV is my first ever full frame camera and I am enjoying it so much specially paring it with the 35 and 24-70 GM's
But we can make a7 iii a web cam... In 15:45 you say it's not possible but it is possible yes. I'm using it and to stream to obs also.
2. Better (WAY BETTER) Eye/Face AF tracking (and not only is it better, it's also WAY faster too.)

A7iii has an incredible sharp and high quality 1080p. I think that 1080p downscaled from 2k or 4k.

Great camera and lens 👌 A7III is such a beautiful camera and when it goes on sell its so worth the price. You won't be able to tell the picture quality difference if it was side by side either.
Will you suggest that it’s better to buy the A7 III for concert photography?
Brilliant advice for us A7iii owners. I need to upgrade my glass for sure. appreciated.

17:40 Lol, grandmother's electronic viewfinder
The flip out view finder is enough for me to pull the trigger
At the time of writing this, here in Germany the a7 IV costs 2700 € whereas the a7 III is 1900 €.
Either of these two will be my entry into the full frame world.
But the 800 € difference makes me really insecure as to which model I should go with.
Wie hast du dich entschieden?
Same here in my case, currently here in Serbia there is a sale for both A7 III and A7 IV. A7 III is 1590€, while A7 IV is 2390€ and both are with 4 year warranty. I don't have any E lenses currently, only my Nikon D5200 with 18-200mm VR II lens, for which I guess I could sell for somewhere 450~500€.
I would buy the A73 in a heartbeat but it’s a 4 year old camera with the same price as when it originally dropped. If they dropped it to at least $1,500 or even $1,700 I think that would be a great deal

As we (apparently) leave the DSLR era of photography (2020 and earlier) and quickly enter in to the Mirrorless era (2021 and forward), how many of you think:
a) it's an exciting time ?
b) it's a suddenly become dull?
To me, the art of photography of looking through a a real viewfinder to compose an image vs. an electronic viewfinder (is what listening to music on a record was to digital music today)? Am I wrong? I can't say I have a strong opinion either way I just want to know what everyone thinks about it.
Definitely not the same. I feel like it's going to wind back to the history just like Leica Q2

Wow, Jared. You did the best comparison video of the A7iv and A7iii I've seen on TH-cam.
The Sony A74 is on my shopping list

The Sony A7 III goes on sale for $1600 pretty often. Keep an eye out for that if you are looking to buy.

EASY: for hybrid probably, for video yes, for photography no!
But now under the exact same conditions (same venue, same lighting) im getting a lot of horizontal lines going across my photos (flicker/banding)
I'm not sure if it's a firmware issue or the new sensor, but it gets annoying.
Damn that's sad to hear, I have issues with banding on video at clubs with my a7iii as well as shitty stabilization so I've been considering upgrading to the iv
Does it still happen even when you tweak the shutter speed slightly? What about the anti-flicker assist?
I'm praying for the A1 to get a little lower.

counterpoint: I absolutely love shooting stills with the A7Siii. Awesome AF, amazing dynamic range, and the RAW files are very manageable.
