    Thanks a lot for making this video. This is a decision I've been trying to make and you absolutely pointed out several things that I've not seen in any of the many other videos I've watched on this topic - ie 500k vs 200k shutter and construction quality. I hope this video makes it further up in the search results as I think a lot of people are unaware of some of the points you made.

    I’ve owned a 7Rii for a half-year, and love the high resolution. One day I’ll move up to a newer one, but this is still the same sensor, and that’s the biggest feature, for sure!

    Very good comparison review. Thanks. I already own the 7R3, a decision from the beginning I made for the size as I was primarily purchasing it for architecture and large prints. However, I was dickering back and forth on getting a cheaper 'B' body as backup, and have decided NOT to get the a73 as several features I care about would be missing entirely. I think I will just have to wait until people buying a7R4's are jettisoning their good-condition-used a7R3's and just get a 'spare'. Thanks!

    • @ericinthewild
      @ericinthewild  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Randolph --- I think that is a good decision! As I mentioned, the additional expected life span alone could tip the scales in favor of the A7Riii in my opinion. Given the prices are somewhat similar at the moment, it makes it easier; as you said, many are dropping their R3s in favor of the R4s. Thanks for watching! Appreciate it.

    An alternative to the 1 and 2 options for different shooting settings, you can use the toggle/hold feature to set a custom button to quickly change shooting settings to increase shutter speed, drive mode etc. It's an incredible feature. I do this for wildlife/birds because you simply don't have time to switch to another setting. I use 1 and 2 for filming in 24 and 120 fps. Thanks for the video :)

    Hi! Great videos, I appreciate them a lot! Deciding between a73 & a7r3...I’ve been leaning towards the R3, but something that has me worried is that I’m someone who hates dragging a tripod with, I enjoy handling my camera for even landscape/wildlife shots I take. A friend warned me with high megapixels with the a7r3, it will show more hand held shake. Have you found this to be true? Any insight is super appreciated!

    • @ericinthewild
      @ericinthewild  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Madeline! I also rarely have a tripod with me, but I've yet to feel like this cost me a shot! That said, it's true, the a73 will be impacted less by camera shake. This is an interesting question... I'm not really sure how to answer it other than saying: yes, in theory, the concern is valid, but in practice, I find myself leaning more toward the benefits that the a7r3 brings to the table.

      Hi @PadPoet, thanks! I appreciate the kind words. I haven't tried any APS-C glass on the R3, no. Thank you for this video. Most of the videos I watched were made in late 2018 where the price difference was very high in between the two. I found both for about 170eur difference. And I belive the 7R3 is woth the extra 170eur. Would you say so?
    Could you recommend a lens for it? I wanted to get a 35mm 1.4 Distagon from Zeiss but I hear it has some quality issues and now I am leaning more towards the Sigma ART 35mm 1.4. What do you think? Thanks in advance. :)

    • @ericinthewild
      @ericinthewild  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely worth it in my book (like I say in the video!). As for the lens, it totally depends what you are shooting and what you want from your camera. The lenses you listed are fast at F 1.4, but of course fixed at 35mm. If you are shooting a lot of street photography, those could be good choices. However, if you want a bit more versatility, then perhaps something like the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 might be better. With crop-mode on the R3, that would allow you to essentially have a 28-105 lens at F2.8 ... not bad! In any case, up to you, MrAston!

    Thanks for your nice video! If you downsize the pictures of the ARIII to the native AIII picture size, would it be a noticeable improvement of the picture quality (details, noise, etc.)? Is it possible to reach the similar SNR of A7III after downsampling? Thanks

    • @ericinthewild
      @ericinthewild  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, interesting question.
      I can only answer it in this way: I have not tried to downsample nor compare noise levels between the two cameras on such an objective level. For me, the 7Riii produces image quality where I am not worried about the noise, nor its comparison to the 7iii :).

      Hey, you are welcome! I think it will be GREAT for food photography. The level of detail will be quite impressive. Plus, if you pair that up with the use of pixel shift, you can really see the textures of some of the foods. I do think lighting will be one of the more important factors with food photography, but I guess you probably already know that! Take care.

    as i was waiting (about 2 years) for the 73 to drop under $1300 used (now even found for $1000) it seems that the r3 has also dropped to that price, which is pretty wild.
    after having watched a few comparisons my only concern aside from the obviously larger file is the lower light-gathering capabilities of the more populated sensor, a concern i also share for the 74, in comparison to the 73. i first watched a few comparisons of the 73 to the s2, which it ironically outperforms in iso, but the s3 is at the other end of the spectrum.
    is the slightly lower iso a worthwhile consideration in lower-light scenarios?
    and another important concern, is the lack of an a-a filter something that induces serious moiré?

    • @NoBananasthird
      @NoBananasthird 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeanV1986 I have been loving the Riii. I mainly shoot in studio so my ISO never goes above 400. I do shoot weddings and events on occasion, and in those instances I shoot with the 7iii primarily. Since the release of the newer cameras, I’m heavily considering buying 2 a7IV’s and selling my Riii and 7iii. I have over 220k shutter actuations on my 7iii (which is only rated for 200k) so I think I’m coming to the tail end of the camera life. My Riii only has around 40k, so there’s plenty of life left in that camera. Decisions decisions. I hope this helped Jean.

    • @JeanV1986
      @JeanV1986 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NoBananasthird thanks for your quick answer! I'm loving the A7iii honestly but I wish the screen was better, the evf is ok but could also be improved. Also, the more durable shutter is a plus. The extra resolution is not really essential, though I could use some cropping power . I just wish the A7riii would have a sRaw option like Canon cameras.

  • @marcelocampoamor4761

    Thank you very much for the comparison between the two cameras. I have both cameras and they complement each other very well. Crop mode on the A7III is 10 MP not 8 MP , inferior to the 18 MP A7RIII but usable. The difference in resolution is evident when working with the photos in PP but not when the photos are used in social media or printed at sizes that are common to most people. For landscapes there is no doubt about which camera to use but for other types of photography having smaller files has its advantages. both to work in PP for a more comfortable workflow without having to have a supercomputer and for storage reasons. Without saying that the A7RIII does not work well for weddings or street photography I think the A7III is a better tool.

    Picked up my used a7iii a couple of days ago for 4 reasons:
    - Money (got it 900€ used and there's no way you'll be able to find an Riii down to that price just yet, lowest was 1250 or something)
    - Low light. Both in video and photos that thing is a beast and is rightfully in the middle of the resolution vs sensitivity battle, it's a much better all rounder than an R or an S camera. Anything you might want to get into you can with this camera and that's a big selling point to people without a lot of money to throw around. I also do a lot of astrophotography so an R wouldn't cut it, I was growing tired of fighting against noise. 24mp still allow for some cropping too, 12 or even 10mp in apsc mode are both more than enough for online posting or small prints, it's just more limited to re-framing instead of getting extra reach out of a photo.
    - Lenses. With more megapixels you need better quality glass (if you want to utilise them) which means more money being thrown again. With a 24mp sensor I can get away with lenses that are even considered bad in the community which is really important to me.
    - Storage. Can't be buying 4k capable quality sd cards all the time or cleaning my storage devices to find space. I'm a little trigger happy so these 24mp fit like a glove to me.
    I do think that if you have the money an a7Riii+ camera is the best choice, but one point still stands and that's low light performance. Unless some kind of wonder material starts getting used soon I don't see the R cameras beating low megapixel full frames at low light.
    Edit: The a7iii gives you a 10mp image in crop mode, not an 8mp one.

    I was trying to decide between the A7Riii and A7iii. I went with the A7Riii since I wanted to be able to print big. It was also on sale and got it for US$1718 + tax (with education discount). The A7iii would have been about $1550. I am still waiting for the camera to arrive, but was worried if I made the wrong decision by going with the Riii when everybody says you don't need high megapixels and 7iii is an all-around better camera. Your video made me feel better :). I also bought the Tamron 28-200mm. Will add a couple of primes in the future.

    Great video on comparison. For me one of the big differences is the filter. Aside from the megapixel count difference, the Anti Aliasing on the a7iii softens the image and changes it. The texture and colours are different.

    • @ericinthewild
      @ericinthewild  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Guillermo Lopez, I am sorry I can't be of better assistance here as I rarely do astrophotography. I did not get the chance to compare the two myself on this topic. Just taking an educated guess regarding the resolution: the A7III/RIII have the same BSI (backside illuminated) sensor tech and have similar sensitivity per sensor area. The pixels on the higher res camera will be more noisy, but when down-scaling to some lower res, you can expect very similar results. Only if you go to ultra dark areas, the lower res sensor will have a bit better SNR (signal to noise ratio), as it captures more photons per pixel. In areas with 'normal' darkness, that difference will be totally drowned by ambient light.

    On this Sony A7r III 3 an important thing is missing which is the color inversion or negative. Very useful for reproducing color or black and white negatives. Many photographers have these negatives in stock and could digitize them. I hope this message reaches Mr. Sony's ears.

    And I have a question to ask if you don't mind.
    Taking photos while traveling and hikes is my hobby.
    I currently own a Fuji X-E3 with a 10-24 lens. I love how light weight it is when I go on 3-4 hour hikes. The photos I take with it are good. But not great. I see a lot of noise on landscape photos. Especially the trees. Other than that landscape photos are great from 10-24 wide angle. I am thinking of getting a full frame to get better pictures. Quality of the image is important to me. Which camera and which lens would you recommend for my landscape photos on hikes and traveling? I don't do astrophotography nor bird photography. Just purely landscape and just taking pictures of cities/buildings where I travel. Or should I even switch to full frame? TIA

    • @ericinthewild

      Hey thank you for the kind words! I'd honestly recommend the A7R3 with the Sony 24-70 f4. I have both, and I am very happy to take that setup on a hike. The lens is also sharp enough to give you some high quality results. The APSC mode of the R3 allows you even to have some sort of quasi-telephoto lens at 115mm.

    First of all I would like to say i love your content! I'm just starting out on photography and I'm looking for a good camera. The A7 III and A7R III both came to my attention. I want to do photo (streetphotography, portrets and nature) and a little bit of video both in light and low light environments. I am willing to splash some cash if the A7R III is really so much better (but this means I could only buy 1 good lens initially), where as the A7 III i could buy 2 good lenses. What would you recommend me to do in this case? Thanks in advance for your response!

      @ericinthewild  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yorick! Thank you, I appreciate that. You find yourself in definitely one of those border cases, where I feel like you would be happy either way.
      However, I have to ask, where are you finding your prices? For me, the difference right now for the A7R3 or the A73 is very small: Certainly not enough to buy another "good" lens. So it's tough --- if I would base my answer on 1) that you get an extra lens with the A73, 2) that you would like to focus on street photography/portraits/video, and 3) kind of the underlying concern you built in about funds; I'd say maybe take the A73 + 2 good lenses versus the A7R3 + 1 good lens. Now, if the price difference isn't really there, and you would find yourself wanting a camera that is more capable for landscape, wildlife, or really for all of the reasons I listed in the video (longevity, crop factor, APSC mode); I'd say go with the A7R3! As I said in the video, the APSC mode basically gives you an extra lens with the A7R3 anyway ;).

      @@ericinthewild Wow, thanks for your extensive answer! Indeed the price differences are very small. I mainly will use the camera to post images and videos on social media. this is the only thing i'm worried about, i have a mac and can edit 4k film but he has a hard time with that!
    but then I think if I don't take all the photos and film in the highest quality, and only those that need to be enlarged a lot later I can upgrade the computer if necessary.
    I just want to avoid having to immediately incur additional costs for a heavier computer.

      Well, what computer do you have currently? If you shoot in compressed RAW, you will get 42MP images with the A7Riii, and 24MP for the A7iii. If your computer can edit 4K film, it should be fine with 42MP images, in my opinion, but perhaps you can search for your exact setup in forums before pulling the trigger!

    I recently upgraded from the a7RII to the a7III, but the camera was defective so I sent it back to Adorama who promptly botched the replacement so I cancelled the order. I was mad at first, but then when I went through a different seller, I decided to treat myself and get the a7RIII instead of the a7III. It arrives tomorrow, and the more I see, the more I'm glad I went with the RIII instead. I was worried about fewer PDAF points, and being able to use them up to f/11 (I think) in the a7III vs f/8 in the RIII but loosing those megapixels always kept nawing at me, so in a way I'm glad Adorama screwed up which forced me to change my plans...

      Hi John, as you said, I think you got lucky in some weird way! The R is great, and you are going to love it. I have not had one qualm about purchasing it. Plus, my trusty MBP handles the files much better than expected. I shoot in compressed RAW. Let me know how your experience goes!
      Also, do you think it would be useful to make a video about custom keys and menu setup?

    • @alchemist_x79
      @alchemist_x79 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far I've only had it for a day, but I already feel it's a quantum leap ahead from my a7RII. The autofocus is absolutely sick.
      The only thing I'm disappointed with is it seems that the touch screen I can only specify where the focus point goes, but then I still have to focus with a camera button. I was hoping I could tap a spot and it would acquire focus. Unless I'm missing something? But other than that, it's a minor quibble.
      I haven't done much with the video features yet (I'm a stills shooter) but coupled with the 100-400GM it's been a beast so far. Overall I'm very happy with it.
      I think a custom keys and menu setup video would be a great idea.
