For wildlife photography in a wet environment the argument doesn't hold. The weather-sealing failures of the A7riii are a deal-breaker, and the reach provided by the extra megapixels in the a7riv allows you to carry less glass.

    • @wahrerWalter
      @wahrerWalter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Derrick Hand Yeah, film costs are the reason i went digital very early when i learned that photography is my thing. Nowadays you can get pretty good cameras for under 500€/£/$, though i don't know the Pentax lineup. If you want to stay cheap, buy a DSLR. Both cameras and lenses are getting cheap now with all the new dslm systems out, especially big brands like Canon and Nikon. As i said, i don't know about pentax.
My dream goal at the moment is an apsc dslm to adapt my father's old manual olympus lenses, because it's hard to hit the focus on my 650D at 50mm 1.4. Nevertheless, i keep taking pictures and having fun. I just came back from vacation with some thousand pictures taken

People have to understand the difference between the two. the R4 is best for stills and single shots. With the 61MP, you capture literally every detail of your image area, which makes it perfect for portraits in both dark and vibrant scenes. The R4 was NEVER meant to be a sports/performance camera. It was not designed to be a camera that you bring to the soccer field. Because of its ridiculously high resolution, the files are much larger than the R3. So go figure it takes the buffer so long to clear, even with the higher end SD card. High MP cameras are distinctly designed for one particular purpose: portraits. On the other hand, the R3 is a jack of all trades. It can do everything you want. Sports photography? You got it. You can achieve up to 10 FPS and still maintain great quality images. Wanna do stills and portraits? Easily done with its 42MP capabilities. Even videographers will absolutely love the R3 for its crisp 4K quality. Its a matter of perspective and understanding how you intend to use the camera. Shop wisely.

Switching from R3 to R4 made a descent difference for me. I cared more about quality and not about time .. very rarely to miss out on something extraordinary happening, however, with my R4, i am finding my work on LR and video editing becoming a bit easier and more sharper than the R3 were. Besides, the quality shows, if you were to do 3d prints for products, or bigger size posters. My final verdict is that i love my R3, i use it now for social events, for quick pictures for online ads and / or social media, but for more professional use, i will always chose the R4 with a heart beat, for i know 99.99% chance my pictures will turn out to be to my liking. However, and to be completely honest, for a novice to med professional user, they might not be able to see the difference right away, and therefore , i understand if they chose the R3 instead , where they can invest the extra $ into the accessories. It makes complete sense, and either way you would be making a great choice.

From camera of the year to dumping it? Wow!
Ive shot with the riii and the riv and IMHO, for me, the difference is worth purchasing the riv.
There are a lot of somewhat minor improvements, but the biggest one for my shooting is the ability to crop more aggressively. It really makes a difference when shooting, especially wildlife. Ive had many occasions when I could get by with my 70-200 vs. having to buy a longer more expensive lens.
Also, I like the EVF much better as the increased resolution is very noticeable, especially when magnifying.
I think the auto focus is better on the riv and that is something I also believe is worth paying for. I have noticed the difference between 399 points vs. 567 points in both auto focus and tracking ability.
Anyway, just my opinion, I certainly value yours, but again, for me, the a7riv is well worth the price!
    best to you,
    Rick

I agree. The A7R4 is like having two cameras in one. When shooting birds, I often use the crop mode and that produces comparable files to my A73. When importing to LR, I skip the DNG conversion until after I have culled the images, then walk away and let the computer do the conversion. No big deal.

I've always appreciated their blend of hard and soft analysis, fun, business, etc. I've learned a great deal and still will, from them. However, they just named the A7RIV the camera of the year for 2019. That was just a few weeks ago. It doesn't help - in my mind - that their Canon push is commensurate with a spike in general interest in Canon by many prosumers (including me) due to recent news of fixes and new gear. Whether they intend to or not, the entertainment portion of this is starting to "feel" more important than the truest sentiments.

LostinOC they are not owned by anyone just because they talk up or down a system that you don’t agree with. Canon fans been calling them Sony fanboys for a long time, before that Nikon fanboys, before that Canon. Yaada yadda, but, what most youtube pushers do is live in their own bubbles of perspective that don’t really mesh with real world buyers. This feels honest, but I’ll predict right now the next big thing will quickly become not enough for them either. Some of that is because it’s their job, some of it is from the bubble....lol

    • @lostinoc3528
      @lostinoc3528 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@danieljohnston5306 owned was a slight exaggeration. However when your job is to be an influencer and a company pays you to influence others to buy their products, it is in a way important that they do what those who pay them want. I understand being a huge fan and just assuming everything they say they mean fully, no matter how obvious it is, some people will never see it or believe it. That is why influencers are the #1 way for a company to make sale. You can keep doing as they say, it is possible who they are pushing is the best. However at this very moment, canon is not.

You stated that you were both going to adopt the A7r4 over the a7r3 because of its important upgrades, like weather sealing etc, no mention of having to wait longer when downloading 500-1000 images. The a7r3 has two card slots but only one is UHSii, the overall write speed to the cards is dictated by the slower card speed. The a7r4 has two high speed slots, it makes a difference. The ability to crop an image like crazy is handy, especially if you use primes and can't get the reach. I believe the reasons why you voted the a7R4 camera of the year 2019 just a few weeks ago are still valid.

I shot with the R3 from literally day one. All types of photography and loved it. Bought the R4 day one and love it. If I could I would stick the R3 sensor in the R4 simply to avoid the high ISO hit... which by my stigmatization is about 1.5 stops worse in the R4. The added noise does not clean up to the point of being equal upon down sampling. But between the two if I can only have one I'd still keep the R4. The R3 ISO performance was improved once with a firmware update so if they do the same with the R4 then it's a total win win. My favorite things about the R4 is that you can shoot in crop mode and still have 26mp and that you can store your custom settings on a memory card. Would not go back to the R3 at any price.

Much more comfortable. The buttons feel better. The mechanical shutter is wayyyy more silent and subdued. The exposure dial has the lock. Literally everything is better economically. For wildlife, the higher megapixel image on the a7r4 means you can shoot with less zoom and get same results. And remember the a7r4 can shoot aps-c to really reduce file size. I just bought the a7Riv and find aps-c mode with the 70-300 zoom makes a nice daytime wildlife setup giving me reach of 450mm and still plenty of megapixels in my images to work with. Also the r4 just feels better to me. I tried both and just didn't like the way the r3 felt in my hands... r4 feels much more natural.

One of the best, most honest approaches to camera reviewing is to actually live with a camera like they've done. Depends. For a pro.. maybe . The bigger file sizes and slower workflow won’t matter much as computer performance improves.. I keep my camera bodies longer than my computers.. The A7R4 is two cameras in one. Nothing says you have to take 61 meg shots. I own the camera and use the 61 mpx for landscapes and other times when I need to crop a lot. Unless it's for focus stacking don't understand the need to shoot multiple images of the same landscape composition. The OLED view finder will show whether you got the shot or did not. And given the wide range of the sensor, I almost never need to bracket. For bird photography, I shoot compressed RAW and vary between APSC or full-frame. I edit on an older 5K Mac and have to wait longer for some things, but it isn't a burden.

I think, your points are fair, as many said, the R IV is not for everyone. I also think, that the R IV does make more sense if you're coming from an R or R II (or any other older camera). Sure, the R IV is great with it's body and all, but the R III is fine as well. Also, Canon and Nikon make good cameras as well (although, for their price, they're just not really worth it).
And yes, Sony has some huge problems in general (no closed shutter when off, no switching of resolution [except like 26MP APS-C] etc).
Will upgrade to the R IV as well ... But I do come from an EOS600D // Rebel T3i, so the jump will be significant.

Chelsea, I believe you got it exactly right not seeing great advantage (real wold, considering cost) going to to A7RIV from the A7RIII. In short, productivity is greatly impacted and costs are substantially increased (storage, transfer, rendition, ...) highly disproportionate to (almost any) value when it comes to real world application. The benefit is minimal most of the time.
Also, considering Canon seems to be on the verge of providing new body offerings (R5/6) in rough parity (perhaps superior is some regards) to Sony offerings I would think the well reviewed RF lenses would compel at least a strong look, if not change once a little time for evaluation has passed. Canon seems to be in a position to make themselves a real player, but, in my view, still needs to prove themselves when it comes to sensors (like when it comes to dynamic range), so be careful.
For me, the Sony still seems to be the way forward as third party glass (Sigma, Tokina) makes the Sony system far more affordable in the near term.

Since I don't shoot high-speed series there is only one downside for me: the A7RIV is definitely less good for high ISO / low light. Would I switch from Nikon Z7 to Sony again? Definitely. Fro A7RIII to IV? Not sure. But since I also own a A9 II I maybe take it along on my next travel.

I’d be interested to see a speed comparison between the cataloging and editing tools. The problem seems more to be lightroom than it is big files. I use photomechanic, even on my 2012 MacBook Air, it’s fast, not something I’d say about lightroom. Lightroom is using 4GB RAM (I only have 8GB total), where as RAWTherapee is using 650MB. Whilst I can see that many prefer Lightroom for various reasons, faster software would be cheaper for most than new computer, especially if it means you have to buy a 16inch laptop, when you really only want to carry a 13inch.

That´s why I stay with my A7R III. I like the changes like the better weather sealing, EVF, body, AF,... but for me who shoots mostly landscapes the Mark 3 is enough (for now).
Another aspect is the bigger noise at higher ISOs and this is really important for my astrophotography.
Maybe I will upgrade with the A7R V but then I need a fully touch operated operating system, much better back screen and some other improvements.

So impatient. What did they all do in the old days? The A7R4 is super high res, so you're not going to get blazing speed. I switched up from A7RII and the extra res was immediately apparent. You have to take more care with all that resolution, especially hand held. Get it right and the detail is breathtaking.

Honestly when it comes to photography the only thing I would want out of my R3 would be a 24 megapixel shooting mode so that when i shoot people they don't have to see the inside of their pores

May 2020. Price of Sony A7riii has jumped back up to $2800. (why?!!!). A7riv is $3500. Will the A7Riv hold its value in the used market better? Do you still prefer the A7Riii?

Tony, seriously?!?? The Earth rotating is affecting sharpness? When you've high MP count, usually anything will affect sharpness, a car driving by (even when distant) or yourself near the tripod as it's impossible to stand absolutely still, or the usual wind that will affect sharpness even if it's blowing at 3mph. But please... Earth's rotation...

One of the most honest videos I've seen - I hope people take your advice to heart, bigger is not always better. Too many consolations you'll have to make. Even the A7r3 sounds like it can slow you down too. Maybe the sweet spot is around 36mp?

I shoot with both A7R cameras now every day (after selling all my Canon gear and getting the 4 when it came out) and honestly, I couldn’t care less about the megapixel difference. BUT, the feel of the 4’s grip, the weather sealing, the EC lock, and the A9-style lock-on autofocus or whatever it’s called? Those “little” things are what I miss when using the 3.

I just switched from the 42 MP A99ii to the A7R4 and I'm really enjoying it. I've never shot an A7R3 but I like the new body and grip better than my A9. Still, I'll probably continue to use the A9 more than the A7R4 because I usually don't need more than 24 MP. However, it sure is nice to have that extra crop capability when shooting birds!

Hmmm. After taking a closer look at the cameras they're holding, I'm wondering if they actually use them, or if it's just eye candy. How 'bout those chic leather camera body suits. No, PD Anchor Links or RRS Modular Plates in sight. Hon, lets head down to the beach and take a few snapshots of driftwood and seashells.
