    I have an A7R4. It's a forever camera for me. Sure, I'll upgrade bodies down the line when the time comes. The A7R4 is just so good on so many levels, and it has helped me take some amazing shots. I'll never get rid of it.

      i have to disagree, recently sold mine, firstly, no one needs 61mp unless you’re doing prints/crop in on your shots a lot, the biggest downside is low light image quality, unless you’re shooting with flash this camera falls apart at 6400 ISO, the a7iii beats it glaringly at 12800 ISO, it’s just overkill

      Do you have any issues with colors looking green? I have an A7R4 and my raw files in Lightroom take so much work to get skin tones to look right.

      @@artemisfowl9002 That's just not supported by what I have found. Compared to my A73, I honestly don't see much of a difference in high ISO image quality when the images are compared in similar sizes.
      I'll always go with more megapixels. I can't believe you had poor luck with yours. Maybe your lens?

    Dan’s not really seeing the big picture - he’s trying to push square pegs into round holes.
    Sony’s making each camera fit a market segment, which necessitates compromises to work. Each of Sony’s models is perfect for their target segment with many satisfied customers.
    So having mixed feelings because the compromises have caught you out is missing the point, because it means you’re looking at the wrong camera.
    Anyone wanting a no-compromise camera with resolution, speed, and great video should be eyeing the A1 - Sony’s just making you pay for it and if you’re a pro, then it’s still good value. If you can’t afford it, then you need to be comfortable with compromise.
    Wanting a camera that can meet everyone’s need without the price tag just isn’t rational, meaning the negative tone in parts of this video were unjustified.
    It’s like reviewing a Ferrari with mixed feelings because it didn’t have the comfy ride of a Rolls Royce or Bugatti Veyron, and feeling mixed about a Rolls Royce, because it didn’t have the speed of a Ferrari or Veyron. Why criticise the Ferrari or Rolls for things they’re not designed for when the Veyron meets your needs?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, the only reason Sony (seems) behind with a couple cameras is that they are 2-3 years old compared to brand new cameras from other manufactures. Any new Sony camera (A1/A7SIII) is way ahead of other options at the moment. Sony got the head start in mirrorless and that bet is still paying off

  • @theunsunghero9

    This review is a bit weird. The complaints are price (still cheaper than the competition), file size (yeah, it is a 61 MP sensor. Why would you buy it if you want to shoot less???) and that they updated the screen (see the point on price). What would you want to recommend it? Turns out one thing. Cheaper. But still the A7RIV is cheaper than the R5. Sorry but this is hard to understand.

  • @Eikenhorst
    @Eikenhorst 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The Canon R5 is a great camera, possibly even better than the A7R iv. But the main consideration for a camera body are the available lenses. I am a travel-landscape photographer and thus I want coverage from ultra-wide to telephoto as light as possible but with good quality. Canon has fantastic lenses, maybe the best lens in the world with the 15-35 f/2.8. But with the Sony there are so many great and especially unique focal length possibilities that it is so much easier to find the lenses that fit your need.

    I own this camera plus a Fuji XT-3. I've owned all brands at some point. Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Minolta, Pentax... and more in DSLRs. I used to be proficient in film 35mm and Medium Format. Developed my own film and prints. Former pro wedding and portrait photographer. Honestly, the only thing I hate about this camera is the LCD screen. It's annoying in how it pulls out and moves. Color extremely accurate. Res off the charts. Focusing, controls, no complaints. I don't care for the menu system of all Sony cameras. But once you get used to it, not a big deal. I don't use it for video. I can shoot in the harsh Nevada midday sun and even in auto mode I don't get blown highlights. Shadows are perfect. I will never go back to Nikon or Cannon. The prices on their pro DSLRs are an insult. Unless you are concerned on "brand", forget them. Sony knows what they are doing and I know many pro wedding photographers who have fully turned over to the Sony system.

    I mean I gotta respect this camera because to this day there's still only 2 other high megapixels cameras that can outdo it. And they cost more. And to this day the image quality is still arguably the best detail in the game. It was even the best video camera Sony made until they dropped their 10 bit cameras because it didn't have all the shortcomings of the A7iii. If you can catch it when they run it on sale for $2500 or so it's still the best thing blowing and going. For photography it's still my favorite camera. Until I can get my hands on an A1.

    Your channel just gets better and better! I just switched over to Sony after shooting Nikon for 20 years. The A7R IVA was my choice. I really enjoy it so far. The lens selection is great. The biggest issues I've found with it so far are the increased noise vs my prior Z7 and D850, the slow ass write speeds when writing files to the cards, and that trash screen. Its so weird the areas Sony chooses to skimp on. Anyway though, overall, its been a successful move and I am very happy with the body.

    I scored my a7riv for $2300 and I wouldn’t part with it. Those images are breathtaking with all that details when you have some great glass on it like the 135mm GM. It does everything I need a camera to do for weddings and portraits. Even a little action sports it’s still good. I picked up the Sony a9 for my back up and I barely use it. I love the image files on the R4. I really don’t see no difference in compressed or uncompressed when editing. So I shoot compressed and have had great luck with it. I could see me keeping this camera for a long time until it dies.

      The tracking for sports is amazing on a7riv. It even works amazingly with ea5 adapter and old Minolta sports lenses. Keeper rate has picked up. But that 135 GM is something else, sometimes it feels you don't need a 300 or 400mm lens, you can just crop the 135 GM photo :).

      @@vads4683 the 135 gm has replaced my 70-200. I don’t even use it but maybe twice since i picked up the 135gm. I just used the 135gm with my a7riv and A9 doing some shots for a client’s dog running towards me and I was surprised on how many keepers I had with the a7riv to the a9. About 75-80% accurate on my a7riv to 90% accurate with my a9. I didn’t think it would be that close. I think the 135gm is the best lens I have ever tried. And I thought the Nikon 200 f2 was a badass lens, the 135gm edges it out

    Love this camera going on a year of owning it! I graduated from Sony’s APS-C line and still own my favorite crop lenses, as this makes the ultimate crop sensor camera. Nothing like shooting in full frame and glorious 60mp with the ability to zoom in like a high powered magnifier in editing. The negatives of having huge files have gotten less straining on our faster and more powerful laptops(!) and cheaper and faster storage options. Definitely wait, if you can, for it to go down to $3K when it did earlier this year, after the A reconfiguration 👌🏼 I currently use the A7C for video and casual shooting. I’ll be in the market for a used SIII to record home videos, after I have a kid to watch grow 🤞🏼 Even further down the line is a used A1 with hardly a shutter count lol

    Regarding the camera's LCD screen:
    - Sony A7R IVA: 3.0 inch w/ 2,359,296 pixels
    - Canon R5: 3.2 inch w/ 2,100,000 pixels
    - Nikon Z7 II: 3.2 inch w/ 2,100,000 pixels
    The Sony LCD is technically sharper (higher DPI), but obviously the Canon and Nikon screens are slightly larger.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But when it comes to screens, DPI is basically a meaningless spec unless all other things are equal...kind of like MP. My phone says it's 100MP but the sensor sucks compared to a 12MP A7SIII. The quality of the panel has less to do with DPI unfortunately. You can buy a 4k TV for $300 and $3000...same resolution but one looks massively better. Right now every Sony display lacks quality regardless of the DPI. The A7IV lacks in quality and DPI

    The rIV is a Studio Camera with an occasional video tossed in for fun. Excellent all around and solid high megapixel camera. If you are invested in Sony why bother with others. If you jump ship when another manufacturer comes on line with a tiny bit better in some areas then you are just a gear head. When the A7rV comes out with over 100mega pixels I'll be on board. you touched on lenses but didn't quite express the importance of them. There are not a lot of lenses that can fully utilize the power of 61mp. I'd even go as far as saying if you plan to use zoom lenses then you're better off with an A7IV. The 61mp is so demanding, but slap on a lens like the 35mm 1.4GM and we see how truly glorious the a7r4 is. You should also add the insane amount of lowlight headroom. At 61mp you tend to see a bit of noise, and people misinterpret this and instantly say "bad at low light compared to the a73" but let me tell you. Shoot a 61mp RAW and export at down to 24mp or 12mp to compare to the a73/a7s3 and you'll have a better image that what both those camera's cant even think about getting at low light.

I’d buy a 102MB FF camera, because when I’m hiking up mountains I’d be able to lighten my load with smaller and fewer lenses knowing that I can crop in half and still have 50MBs to play with. For special locations, I’d certainly shoot for 102MB for large fine art prints.

I also take several trips a year to shoot wildlife. I have no issue with image quality that comes out of the A7RII, assuming I nailed the focus. My biggest gripes are the buffer and focusing ability. Since every brand now has a sizable lineup of mirrorless camera bodies and lenses there is almost no reason to switch brands just because of some gimmicks on a body. Very good video, very informative 😊 I have a question for you. I don't understand why there is only a 2mpx improvement of 26.1mpx apsc crop mode for the A7m4 compared with the Sony A6400 with a 24.1mpx sensor? I would have thought that if you have 61mpx full frame that this would be able to render 40mpx apsc mode?

    • @vads4683
      @vads4683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's 1.5 crop on apsc lenses, but full frame sensor area is actually 2,3x larger than apsc. a7riv 35,8*23,8=852,04 and 23,5*15,6=366,6. That also must mean the apsc lenses dont use the sensor as effectively as full frame, because lenses are not 2.3x crop.
      Maybe someone else can comment more about it.

    • @vads4683
      @vads4683 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured out myself I think. If you calculate 366 from 852, then you get 43%. For marketing purposes it was then probably rounded up and classified as 1,5x crop or 50%. Magic of percentages, but actually the full frame sensor is 2,3x larger 852/366. So the photos you see from full frame sensor with similar lens is actually 2,3x times bigger and low light performance should be too. 1 stop advantage low light advantage is also 2x advantage (2,3x to be correct) :).

      @@vads4683 Thanks for looking into this. I still don't understand it, though. Regardless, it is the only full-frame camera that I am willing to upgrade to, and bring my apsc lenses along. I'll get an 8.3% increase in pixel power (not a huge difference) , while all other full-frame cameras in the Sony range will decrease my pixel power when using aspc mode (compared to the Sony A6400). I am into wildlife photography and the more megapixels I can get for distance shots the better.

    • @vads4683
      @vads4683 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@voglerthevloger5870 yes you can get more reach with apsc mode. But as the sensor is 2x times smaller it needs more magnification and a full frame lens on full frame sensor gives better quality i think. I had a6400, a6600 and now zve10 for fun. Their sensor photo quality is not the same as full frame a7r cameras. A7r cameras also don't have aa low pass filter and images are sharper and clearer. But you can compare for yourself. There must be a reason why some buy very expensive full frame 600mm f4 lenses ;). And full frame lenses generally are better quality too additionally to the sensor size. But as a hobby photographer you can use 100 to 400 on apsc and it will be 150 to 600mm for you. Zoom lenses also tend to focus breath more when focusing closer so that lens is not 100 400 but more like 350 for close objects.

    I love my a7riv, for many of the reasons you stated. Image quality, AF speed/accuracy, and crop mode versatility mainly. You can always crop in post but I like to frame my shot up in camera so crop mode comes in handy then, almost like having a zoom lens

I did not get the a7m4 because it did not have a flip out screen for low portrait landscapes! The a1 has speed and the right amount of megapixels, but no flip out screen! The only camera that fits what I am looking for is the Canon r5!!! But I don't want to leave Sony. Maybe there will be a a9iii, or a a1ii that will fit the need! Appreciate your hard work creating these but I believe ANYONE could find something with their [2] year old camera that falls short of what is released [today.] I have an a9 and going on 5 years, I have ZERO remorse as I knew what I was getting and above all, I know that technology will always improve / evolve.

    • @learningcameras

      So typically either firmware updates or sale prices help make old cameras still compete with newer cameras but the A7RIV actually costs more than it did last year!

    • @beatmixer0097
      @beatmixer0097 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@learningcameras Fair point! Although I think firmware updates largely address challenges (glitches) and perhaps “tweak” things but I think it’s a stretch to say they allow cameras with dates tech to keep up with current tech.
      Perhaps they thought that do to the “upgrades” they could justifiably price the camera at the launches $3500 - anything more than that would be absurd but to your point in this video, there are VERY few cameras that can achieve what both the R5 and 5riv can. Guess what I’m saying is if there were an abundance of options, and they still priced it at $3500, yea that wouldn’t mKe sense. Limited supply to deliver specific needs and high demand = Sony a7r4?
      Finally, as you very well know, it’s not just the camera you’re investing in, it’s the ecosystem and while RF glass is incredible, they are BIG, HEAVY and not cheap. Sony on the other hand started the party, were laughed at by C & N (especially Nikon and that executive who actually was quoted at saying that, “No professionals use mirrorless) but maintained course and here we are. Did you ever think that SONY would be considered the benchmark for the two well known giants??
      Love them or hate them, everyone needs to thank Sony for ALL the incredible options we as creators have today. Too many focus on which is better and forget that had it not been for Sony, these options wouldn’t exist.

      Appreciate that! So the A7RIVa is technically better than the A7IV in a few areas (screen, viewfinder, resolution...) but the video side of the A7IV has more noticeable improvements over the A7RIVa that make a much bigger difference so if you are using it for video ...either hybrid or video exclusively, I'd be more likely to get the A7IV
