  • Special thanks to Carobu Engineering and their customer who let me review this nice example of a Porsche 968.
The 968 was the ultimate evolution of Porsche's 4-cylinder transaxle series of sports cars that began on the mid-'70s with the 924, which evolved into the 944 and then the 968.

I've always seen the Porsche 928 and the 968 not as purpose-built sportscars, but as cars to fly a highway at triple digits. GT machines in the truest sense of the word.

That's pretty much what they are, great GT cars that are also fun to drive.

The 968 Club Sport is probably one of the most involving visceral drives you can have.
The 928 is truly the king of the Autobahn, I have a late model 😊S4 bought off an old gentleman for pennies 15 years ago.
Within Europe, for most distances, I prefer it to flying.

I try not to daily drive my 968. Yet I love driving it 3 days out of the week whether it’s a short trip or a long trip, on a highway or a joyride around mountain roads.

Excellent Review. I still adore my 968 Cabriolet. I imagine that it might one day become a collectible. Perhaps long after I am gone but the primary reason that I will not let it go now is because it is a stick shift. The last of the Classics. There will come a day where they simply do not make manuals any longer. This car is a joy to row through the gears. Thank you good Sir for your tribute to our fine cars.

I still remember the first time I saw one of these. It was 1992 and I was living in Montpellier. I was walking down the street and suddenly stopped to gawk at a purple 968. My American friend couldn't figure out why I was so fascinated, but I guess he didn't know what were looking at. I still like the look 30+ years later.

I can really appreciate that the modifications made the 968 a “better” car, but I really strongly prefer the looks of the 944.

Great video, always been a fan of the 968 manual. I had just started working back in 1993 when I saw a racing yellow club sport on the road for the first time, wow, always been a fan of its looks

Absolutely beautiful and timeless car. And a great bargain compared to air cooled 911's which are insanely priced and out of reach from the casual car enthusiasts. Buy these 968's now when you still can.

Great video! I have always been a huge fan of the 968 and last year I finally pulled the trigger and bought myself a 93, cobalt blue, 6-speed, Coupé.
I can only recommend the car and agree with what was said here. Terrific handling, timeless looks all combined in a great package! However, there is something that should be considered when buying one of these! 968 maintenance is not necessarily cheaper than it is for a 911. A mayor service at a Porsche specialist can easily get up to the $5000 mark with a few other small bits added. Plus a lot of 968's were cheap throwaway cars for many years and because they are so durable they were frequently not maintained as well as they should have been and now they have a lot of deferred maintenance. So definitely keep an eye on that if you don't want to invest another 25-50% of your initial investment within the first few weeks of ownership.
My top tip: Buy a car with a few more miles, but one that has been driven and maintained consistently, preferably at a main dealer or an independent Porsche specialist. Interior pars are frequently faded or broken and replacement is almost impossible to find, so make sure that you find one with a nice interior, exterior cosmetics are much easier to take care of! If you want a manual check the clutch as they are quite the pain to replace, and as you might imagine, really expensive. The only other major flaw with the car are the camshafts, or more specifically, the camshaft gears that are connected to the Vario-Cam assembly. The teeth sometimes get hairline cracks, shear off and end up in your engine resulting in all sorts of terrible things. However, if the car was serviced at a specialist regularly that should be preventable as most experienced mechanics take off the valve cover while doing the timing belts in order to check the gear wear while they are in there.
I hope that I haven't scared away too many potential 968 buyers. The cars are really terrific, but buying the cheapest one can often lead to a very bad first Porsche ownership experience and no one wants that! If you have any further questions or want to chat about these wonderful cars you can find me on Instagram @93porsche968

What model and version of the 944 or 968 would you say is the 1 to buy out of the 924S 944 or 968? I've been considering buying one. Your vids are great and you really know your stuff. Thank you for the advice and your knowledgeable opinion.

944 turbo is the best out of all in my opinion. Looks the best, probs the most iconic and isn’t as much as a dog as the others. There’s a later models with 250hp from bigger turbo and it can be tuned up to 400-450 easily
