Before the crabbing season starts I need to get the FV Southern Girl out of the water to check, clean, and paint her. This is such an important part of preseason prep! I have to add zincs to the bottom of the boat, if I forget to do this it will cost me thousands of dollars in repairs! It's never an easy task, sometimes you find huge repairs that need to be done, hopefully we won't find anything too major that needs fixing.

Hey Luke,
Retired crabber here, fished the waters of south Louisiana, and Lake Pontchartrain, for 45 years, and I just wanted to "Thank You" for allowing me to re-live my experiences through your videos, something I tremendously appreciate!
People today don't understand or appreciate what it takes to be a successful crabber/fisherman, the hard work, sleepless nights, ingenuity, and outright hustle it takes to pull off an endeavor like this, nor could they do it, yet they're always the first to criticize.
Oh well my friend, Thanks again for all you do, and keep the Great content coming, it's enjoyed & appreciated more than you know!
God Bless you and your lovely wife, stay safe, and keep making that money!!!
Thank you so much for watching! Appreciate it!
Got any advice for a younger guy out of New Orleans looking to catch some crabs in lake ponchartrain? Gonna try it for the first time this year and Luke’s videos inspired me to
I feel the same now my time as a trawlerman is at an end 😢
East coast of England twin beamers ✌️
Would you mind sharing a finance video? Like your monthly spendings and how much you make out of crabbing? I think that would be really interesting
@@fvsoutherngirl Thanks for responding!
PS... Time to get busy, looking forward to meeting baby Luke, I know he's gonna be making an appearance soon, and you're gonna be needing a new first mate to pass along all that good learned knowledge!
Kudos Brother!
So surreal seeing the Key Bridge. I was going through old footage from my past videos and noticed quite a few Key Bridge shots. Stay safe out there. Can't wait to get crabs from ya.
was going to say the same
Yeah when he showed the bridge I was going "Hey wait a minute".
I was just thinking the same thing
I Love that quote, "brakes are for quitters". Thanks Luke.
I laughed at that too but the from Denny's to Hooters was a good one as well.
All brakes do is slow ya down, and we're racin' here!
Young man,you most definitely got the hustle, determination, attitude, and à strong will to accomplish what you want to do !! You are an inspiration to your viewers, love the channel my friend !!!
Thank you for watching!
A little trick from Alaska. Polish your prop with a brass wire wheel and paint penetrol (its like a paint additive)on it , as many coats as you can so it dries before you go in the water. It keeps barnacles and things from growing on your prop. Good fishing and be safe!
Our harbor is a mud pit at low water...full of electrolysis.....we paint out props with FG resin...🇺🇸
We use Penetrol in car work too, sprayed or brushed onto difficult to access surface rust. It penetrates completely to healthy metal and fuses the oxides... Also use it in ALL oil based paints, with or without catalist. I also mix it with boiled linseed oil and rubbing oils for woodworking.
Hey Luke, great videos as always! The cormorant is not invasive. Their numbers were down in the 80-90s due to pesticides like DDT…same as the bald eagle situation. Working on the water during those times clamming I didn’t see many but their numbers are up now. Keep doing what you are doing!
Was looking for this
The crew doesn't look like they will steal the copper out of the AC. Kind of a nice recommendation. 👍
We think so too 😂
I dont know if you actually read all of your comments but i just wanted to say that i love what you do im from seward alaska and i have been a commercial fisherman my whole life. I feel your pain and i appreciate your victories even the small ones.thank you for devoting so much time showing us the struggle there is so much value in that.and finaly i love the term sacrificial anode as aposed to zinc god bless you and yours and keep up the good work skipper.
Thank you for watching!
"She went from looking like Denny's to looking like Hooters"!! That line had me shooting tea out my nose, very very uncomfortable thing to have happen!! But the laugh was worth it.😂😖😂
Luke, try using “rustaid outdoor” for the brown tint on the hull, all you need to do is spray it on with a chemical hand sprayer. We use it down here in FL on our boats we run in the river. No scrubbing necessary and way less harsh on the fumes.
😂😂😂 I love your humorous look at things. And your "git'r done" attitude. You rock Luke.
Luke, not only did u put in a strong day of work, but u explained in detail on how to maintain a crab boat, and were humorous also
Denny's to Hooters comparison, awsome. Ur definitely one of the most detail oriented people on the internet.
Keep it up brother
Ur doing great!!
Crazy seeing the key bridge in the video. I also hate painting!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Luke, When you said, China Wire, that made me smile.
Sad seeing the bridge in the background. As always you make me smile!!! Thank you
Spurs line cutters needs to help this man out. He’s the best advertisement for their line cutter that there is
My grandfather was Head of Dept. Of Ships at Mare Island from 1948 to 1959, and he always installed zinics on his cars, which prevented rust! 😊
I love your smart common sense, self deprecating humour.
Its awesome all the random youtubers interacting with each other, love Flair videos and that Jerky is legit
Same cormorant problem on the west coast, between them and the bay seals it's tough to find a salmon
Damn gunna be weird seeing videos with the bridge still up
We buy muriatic acid from a pool supply house. It’s the main ingredient in hull off. It’s cheaper to buy by the gallon from a pool supplier
We get ours from a local Farm & Home Supply named Atwoods... similar to Tractor Supply.
Canada of all places have recently opened up a cormorant season around the Great Lakes. The US needs to follow.
Classic. Finally you use a Hammer and it's called a scraper. 😂😅
3rd Gen fisherman here and a good trick is adding cayenne pepper to bottom paint. It helps in preventing growth
I’ve used cayenne pepper on my outboard lower end that sits in salt water and it works terrific! Just mix it with latex paint and save lots of money and time not scrapping crud and barnacles. Good tip.
@@williamwest5827 that's a good idea 👍
If your having a heart attack....it can save your life....put on your lips...hope for the best
You've got to love the small family owned yards. Respect for Mr.Mark❤.
I'm in Washington State, my family has been in the pot making business for decades now since the mid 70's. After our father passed, my brother and his wife took over the business and kept up making shrimp and crab pots, but they use plastic coated wire, we don't have to zinc our pots because of that. I remember every fall my dad getting his wire order in so he could make them all winter.
You should talk to them about maybe sending Luke a couple to try or even discounted.
Pretty sure its because Dunggies can be in much deep water, and much rougher conditions compared to blue crab. Needs a thicker heavy duty pot, which makes sense to coat. Blue crab pots are much lighter weight, and in shallow calmer water.
@@sverre054 It all depends on the location. We used to wade for Dungeness crab on the Dosewallips flats during the extreme low tides, they're everywhere from 15 to 600 plus feet (we were in the Hood Canal) their geographic range is immense from California to the Aleutians in all conditions from rough water to calm inlets. The commercial crab pots for the ocean fisheries were huge heavy round 4' diameter pots with a stainless steel "chicken wire" like covering.
@@cherylmillard2067 I know, my family has a cabin on Ouget sound and on low tides we can go out and grab crab, but we also can go out and set our pots in 300'. What's your company name? I am actually looking for 2 new pots.
I’m watching this 3 weeks after the Key Bridge collapse! It was good to see it up in this video! What a horrible disaster for the Baltimore Chesapeake region to have happen. Fair seas Captain!
It’s US Gypsum. Also right there is SCM chemical, the white paint pigment specialists. Ft. Howard, militarily important since the early 1800’s served as the footprint the British temporarily held during the war of 1812. Interestingly the US Special Forces created a typical Vietnamese Village (including underground NVA tunnels) to train our soldiers. Who knew.
Great job. I appreciate the humor and seriousness of the work.
I work in a boat yard in aus for your props it is great to have a product like propspeed helps with the growth on your prop and shaft
Can’t even tell you how much I look forward to your videos - and with gems like brakes are for quitters and if it’s free it’s for me - how can you go wrong ??? I always say cheap is good free is better !!! Love your show bro / looking forward to crabbing season - more videos for. You and more crabs to buy from you - can’t wait to see the dry dock boat at the crab stand - love your show !!!
The marina (Mucluski's) you pulled the boat out is where my father keeps his boat. It is on the trailer currently in the lot, but pretty soon we will be docking it in a slip. I can't wait!!!
The red paint is call redlit what we use in the navy, which suppose to make the hull rust reaction eats the metal slowly. And the paint job does looks crap when only one man doing it, trust me it much pain in the back doing hull paint job by yourself.good job luke do what you ganna do😊😊
Gotta say I've made my career at a small boat yard up in the great lakes. I enjoy watching all your videos and can really relate to tons of it. We all call half our wrenches and pliers "hammers". Also love cringing when you do things totally off the books when painting and other boat finishing jobs! Have any questions on how to do anything related to boat refinishing please reach out and I would be happy to answer anything.
Thank you!
As always, thanks for the chuckles with your Lukeisms
A scraper like this, holding a hammer!! You’re awesome
Been there, done that but on a 65 footer for over 30 years and mostly on intertidal boat walls! My rusty joints need a lot of grease these days! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.
You should make a shirt with a barnacle on it and a bottle of on & off in the background with the barnacle saying "Why is the water spicey?!" Haha
Between your channel, diy repair and other sail boating channels I've learned so much. I'm currently building a 25 and 34 foot custom perahu style canoe so I can boat on a river here in central alabama. Definitely getting the six pack license with sail boat rating, so eventually I can have fun on the water.
Hey Luke, nice work on the boat. One thing i found many years ago to clean my boat was a spray cleaner called 'Mighty Boss.' i sprayed it my boat the black stains just started coming right off, very little effort... I really like that old marina. Kinda reminds me of old marina in Panama City, its now gone. It's sad to see those old marinas torn down and turned into condos. I hope it doesn't happen where you are. I know what you do is hard but imbrace it, enjoy what you have and your surroundings.
😂 that claw hammer has more character than most people I know!
I like the water dripping OUT of the rudder shaft while he's changing zincs. Classic!
I saw you doing interview on some TV show after the bridge collapsed and went to your page and love it. I'm in the Northwest so that's a lot different culture out there and I enjoy following you.
I use pots from Millers Is in Rhode Island. The crabbing here is off the hook and the short pots work great here.
I learn new things every single time I watch a video of yours. It's my favorite part and I appreciate it.
Lived in Maryland my whole life and it’s so cool to watch your videos and learn more about everything our waterman and fisherman do. My family was never into boats or fishing or water related stuff 😂 so I’ve never had the opportunity to get out on the water or on boats and what not and I’ve always been curious. Cool to see what goes into catching my favorite meal! Makes me want to get some crabs this weekend lol
Its funny for a small state it has mountains in the west to Atlantic oceanfront in the east and everything in between. I've met so many people that have not done a lot of things this state is known for. Never been on the bay and boated, crabbed or fished, rode a horse in the farmlands or been to a horse race or have even just drove through the mountains let alone camp there. I may not be a world traveler but I have been all over this state. It has a lot to offer.
"The crew doesn't look like they'll steal the copper out of my air conditioner " 😂 Classic, just wait, they're coming.
We resent that! 😂
Love the quick to the point and reasons explaining your process, and the goofy sarcasm.
We got a cormorant season in Ontario a few years ago. It’s great! Hopefully you can get one too
Great timing for this video, my boat bottom cleaner just invoiced me for a bottom scrub and new Zincs. I'm in a marina in SoCal, and besides the salt water, there must be ALOT of stray current in the water eating up the Zincs!
Roofing crew that doesn't look like they're going to steal the copper out of your AC unit add me spitting my coffee out. Thanks man I needed that😂. Nice seeing the Key bridge standing.
Deckhand on a towboat outa’ Charleston here! Just gotta say the majority of the guys out here love you & your stuff, especially myself.. Good luck this season & God bless!!
I love seeing a young bloke with strong work ethics, also loved the shout out to flair. 🇦🇺
I have a next level of appreciation for crabbers because of your channel Luke!
You ever watch the documentary of the old Chinese men who raise and fish with cormorants. It’s nuts, there’s even cormorant match makers. 😂
Yes 😂
My son-in-law has a large fishing trawler here in Austraila people just don’t know the expenses involved in keeping the trawler sea worthy it’s good to see a Chanel like yours that can explain the amount of maintenance required
Hey Luke, lived and boated out of Annapolis my whole life. Run over many things fishing, crabbing or when running at night, Best marine accessory ever was the day I installed "SPURS" to my drive shaft and from that moment on it cuts fishing line. crap pot line (you name it) I think they advertise up to 1/16" wire as well. It has kept my shaft clear of any and all entanglements ever since. A thought :)
Keep up the very entertaining videos. I appreciate you
For your Zinc fund
Thanks!
I use zep toilet bowl cleaner and a foam blaster at the end of the pressure washer to spray the scum line off. Foam it up wait ten minutes then spray off.
Hey Luke. Love your videos. I wanted to comment on this one as when I was a VA. Commercial fisherman I've crabbing outta either my Carman 40ft'er or my C-Hawk 21ft'er they both got dirty as all get out to in the lower bay and my home river( potomac). I used to use on/off too until I got schooled on reading the ingredients. Go to any hardware store a grab a gallon of just plain muratic acid. It's the magic that's in on/off and half the price. Your pay for the name of on/off. Thanks
Same with zinks on boats always last to go on After Painting boat 😊
"whawhy is the watta spicy" haha ... This definitely lighted the mood of seeing the key bridge moments prior.
Gonce has the best ice cream around!! That’s a regular stop for me.
12:22 Cutlass bearing 💅
It's nice to see that you on are also using the weekend to replace the zinc anodes and paint the boat. Greetings from the North Sea coast - Europe
The Southern Girl looks so good out of the water 😍
Lol!!! He finally got a hammer and called it a scraper. So funny
We get the brown-stain in coastal NC. It is easily removable with any acid-based cleaner like Whink, or most toilet bowl cleaners. Apply it, and it melts away the brown stain almost instantly. At the same time it removes any wax; best I recall, you don't wax your hulls anyway! ☺EDIT; If I had commented at the end of the video instead of the middle, I would have seen you already have an acid-based hull cleaner that works...
Nice that you had some old footage of the Key bridge pre collision. Any guesses how much the new tolls will be?
Luke, I have never commercial fished, nor want or need to do it, I live 20 miles from lake superior. But your videos make a guy want to Gump it up. Love you're videos! U made me interested in this stuff!
My OCD would make me wire wheel all that before I put anodes on it.
I really like your channel. I owned a wooden 30 foot skiff in barnegat bay. Also had a sailboat in middle river. Very familiar with where you are. Lived in federal hill for a couple years.
Dude, you make me laugh, and that's what I need right now.
I don’t know about scum lines, but I have used mop and go to seal certain leather projects that see a lot of moisture and it works fantasticly.
How cool to see. Could you put a split collar on the one side that you get that line… in on 🤷♂️ just wondering if it would help never seen or worked on a boat but I sure would like too.
Best life to you man.
Thanks for sharing it super cool
So weird to see the Key bridge not broken. 🥺Breaks are for quitters lmao. You have the best lines. From Dennys to Hooters 😂 Stay Safe
Thanks for taking us along.
Just a note ... the nuts on the prop shaft holding on your propeller are on wrong. You have them reversed ... the small nut goes on the inside and snugs up the propeller, the larger nut goes on as the lock nut. Easy way to remember -- would you rather have 4 -5 threads locking the main nut or twenty threads locking the main nut? I know that you probably already put it back in for the season, but you may want to fix that if you take it back out!
nice installment Luke......curious to see how your stand turns out as well!!!! Keep it up....
God bless ya young man. I’ve never bought merchandise from a TH-cam creator. However, you impress me as a hard working youngster. I’m gonna make the purchase. Stay safe out there.
I know it's to late now but with aluminum boats you can get a see through though skin put on so the alloy doesn't discolor on our 55 foot cray boat we put skin on her but not where we'd pull our cray pots. The point to the story is if you got a clear skin put over the bow area it will stop the discoloration of the white fiberglass. Another trick on the charter boat I rand it was fiberglass and I'd use aluminum acid for keeping the bow waterline white as a dove 🕊
Why not add a line cutter on the prop strut to cut line?
The crew does it look like they're going to steal the copper out of my air conditioner that's some funny stuff right there
Hey buddy, Ex Shrimper from S.C. here, Ya might wanna pack dat rudder post packin gland, She pourin bud!!! lol. I use to use ospho on those stains like ya had it worked good too, Great on rust too!! Ps, I normally tug on ma nuts eva now n agin, Rotfflmmffao!! Have a great season up yonder this yr.!!!! Best ah luck to ya my friend!!!!
Marine Travel Lift, proudly made in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. I've hauled several to marinas on all coasts.
FYI, the prop nuts are installed backwards. Big nut needs to be installed last. Fun post. Thanks.
I met Luke tonight! Really nice guy and such a hard worker. It was great to meet you in real life! I would crab with you any day!
Nice seeing you!
Very entertaining video. 👏 commentary is off the charts. 😂
Good job ! But I will still out crab you !😊 hopefully, the wye River will be good this year .
She came from dennys lookin like hooters had me rollin😂😂😂😂
Great Acknowledgment of Mc Cluskey’s , Cuckold Point(Millers Island), Edgemere, Fort Howard area.
That fraid strap picking that boat up - OMG:)
I don’t even own a canoe…. I don’t even like to swim, but I do like to watch your videos. Hey ya know what ever floats your boat kid 😎💪
Hey man, I’m at Crabber in Louisiana. Wanted to let you know when we pick our boat up and clean it to make that white and get that scum off of it. We use the toilet bowl cleaner called the works and then we wax it and it helps keep that scum line off. Maybe try that next time and it might help I’ll get the name of the wax and send it to you.
I think you should move that zinc further up the shaft away from your cutlass bearing. They need water to cool and having the zinc that close will block some flow.
Just a construction worker here in mass who like watching your videos!❤️😎🤘🏻
This guy gives me hope in tomorrow.
Hey Luke. Next time go to Napa and get some stuff called Bully Dog.. it's an acid type cleaner. Almost acts like toilet bowl cleaner but better. Put it in a sprayer and spray it on, scrub and rinse. I promise you won't be disappointed. Also any small carburetor that needs cleaned,,,,, put some of that in a bowl and drop the carb into it. You'll watch it fizz and bubble for a few minutes. Leave it submerged for about 30. Pull it out and rinse. Should be cleaned. Reason I say not to leave it longer than 30 is it'll eat the aluminum in prolonged plunges
I use Pine-Sol as my small engine and ATV Carb Cleaner... its great for that!
Nice work Luke, I hate doing the bottom too. Wishing you a fantastic season!
