      mormegil231 The Force Awakens was an abysmal film, but it was still better received by the general audience. Because even though it had some drab story choices (Rey being a Mary Sue, Leia hugging Rey instead of Chewie, etc) it was still a continuation of Star Wars and not whatever The Last Jedi tried to be. (Star Wars: Ragnarok)

    Love to see people loving this movie--I am pro-The Last Jedi, and the amount of online whining about this film is so immense that after a while you begin to wonder if you were imagining that it was good. (Call me crazy, though, I really really liked Rogue One and maybe even liked it a bit more than TLJ considered as a whole. But in general, I have to say that Disney-era Star Wars has been good Star Wars.)
    I'd heard a few spoilers going in, but the scene that thrilled you all the most came as a complete surprise.

      You sound like my dad, and he also said something that is very apt for not just Star Wars but almost all movie franchises. The second movie in a trilogy is almost always going to be the worst one of the bunch because You have to set up things for the endgame, and not many questions get awnswed.

    • @kylemorello4787
      @kylemorello4787 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@elizabethsmith7224 that's ironic, since The Empire Strikes Back started off as the most hated Star Wars movie, and turned into the most loved. And now that Rise of Skywalker is out, it seems like TLJ is following suit. It's seems like more people are warming up to it now, and those who still don't like it are actually being respectful to it's fans. I've heard some detractors say that they envy fans of this movie and want to like it, which, IMO is how it should be for any thing someone doesn't like. As an animation fan who loves the 2010s, that's how I handle my dislike for any animated things from that era I don't like.

    Whenever I watch a movie or a T.V. show that I really hate I'll just say it sucks and continue with my life. I'm not one to take a fictional property, that's meant for entertainment purposes, so serious that it'll harm and cause damage to others * cough * Steven Universe * cough *. The fanboys acting immature about not liking this film is just ridiculous. I get why some would hate it but it's seriously not the worst thing to come out from Star Wars. I guarantee you that if Disney didn't buy Lucasfilms then the movies would had gotten worse. But hey, like you said, we all got different opinions and I do respect that. It's the people that would take a fictional property WAY TO GOD DAMN serious that pisses me off.

    I do believe this is my favorite edition of OML. Seeing you all rejoice in how much you loved the movie was so fun to see, and your critique of the more vocal and disagreeable detractors was very thoughtful. Hopefully, in time the fandom will mellow and accept Episode 8, even if some people never see it as their favorite installment. Rian Johnson's direction is fantastic, and I hope he gets to make 10-12. Thanks to all of you for your hard work and for all the laughter you brought me and my boyfriend in 2017. Your efforts have made this grim little year brighter for us, and I imagine that's true for many others as well. Please have a safe and happy New Year's and a wonderful 2018. Best.

    i appreciate the turns TLJ took and can support them in a narrative/literary sense. (aye, space monticarlo seemed to be a filler area of this film and prelude to the separate trilogy with that boy). i wonder how this film would be if someone were to edit out a few moments from the casino...

    I think that people hate this film because it takes it's time a bit to much even though it is used to further the story (they could have taken out the casino scene and that would have helped) unlike the original which has more energy. I will argue with one point: the Snoke argument. I get that he’s supposed to be a red herring, but it took them almost two entire movies to reveal that. You can’t spend that much time on a character, not give them any interesting characteristics, and then just kill them off without any development.
    Also, I think the “Humanizing Kylo Ren” thing is because the whole Nazi/Neo-Fascist symbolism was turned up to eleven in the new trilogy, and at this point no one wants to humanize the Nazis.

    • @TonyGoldmark
      @TonyGoldmark  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fair enough I guess. But I don't think they spent too much time on Snoke, and the fact that they didn't give him many interesting characteristics is all the more reason to kill him off.

    • @kylemorello4787
      @kylemorello4787 4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @uniquelancelot
    @uniquelancelot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have a theory about why Kylo Ren is evil. Imagine if you're the child of two of the most powerful people in the galaxy and they aren't around ever - they're busy running everything. So then when you get sent to train with your Uncle Luke you're one of twelve and you still aren't getting any sort of special guidance or attention. So you find someone (Snoke) who will take you on and not only that but tells you how special and important you are. He's that young and that desperate for love it would make sense that he would follow that.

    Not to be nitpicky, but I feel like it's kinda debatable as to whether we got the true story of Rey's parents. Isn't it just Kylo who randomly yells at her that her parents were some random traders who deserted her? How is that automatically considered the truth (especially given Kylo's own backstory)? IMO, his explanation shouldn't be taken as fact. I've only seen this new movie once (illegally, online), but I don't understand why various critics are all saying "Yep, it's been explained now... her parents are just some random assholes."
    IMO, that's exactly the sort of thing Kylo would say to her in that situation, because he wants her to join him. I'd see it as a manipulation tactic, not as him telling her the actual truth about her parentage. Even if his explanation was *technically* true, aren't most of these main characters kinda "orphans' in some sense, to begin with? Luke didn't know who his dad was, etc, etc... Her dad could still be a "smuggler," yet could also be Han Solo, could he not?

    The Force Awakens trailers were not setting up a reveal for Kylo Ren to actually be Luke having turned to the dark side at all. They were just setting up a return to form for Star Wars. There was nothing revealed about the plot at all in the trailers except that a new evil had appeared from the ashes of the Empire, young heroes would rise up against it, and arguably the best character in the original trilogy, Han Solo, would be there to play the mentor and pass the torch to a new generation. That’s what the trailers for The Force Awakens set up. A fun, sci-fi action adventure movie.

    • @TonyGoldmark

      I remember a LOT of speculation that Kylo Ren was gonna turn out to be Luke. I don't think it was a coincidence that they specifically didn't show Kylo's face, AND didn't reveal how small a part Luke would have.

    • @brandonkrol
      @brandonkrol 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I remember the speculation around Kylo Ren’s identity too. And I also remember that most of it was absolute dog shit. There were people who thought Jar Jar was Kylo Ren for crying out loud! If you ask me, they probably just didn’t show Luke in any of the marketing material because he only appeared at the end, and didn’t show Kylo Ren’s face because they wanted to build him up as a creepy guy in a mask.

    I dunno...this movie is a mixed bag for me. I get the ideas where he's going for, but its the technical parts and pacing issues is what bugs me and held the film back for me. Like the Leia part, her using the force, I'd believe it! But the way she was shot coming back to the ship ala Superman...that was distracting for me, it should've been shot differently to make it more graceful and not so over the top and fast with a sweeping camera shot. The idea about the grey area and the commentary about war profiteering at the canto bite scene, I get it. But it feels weird coming from Rose (and I like the actress), but it feels off to me when Finn should've known what it was like to be forced to follow orders and such from a powerful elite (leaving out that deleted scene REALLY didn't help) that and I admit I would've REALLY preferred if Finn was the main character of the trilogy because his concept since TFA was so much more interesting and he's my fave character of the trilogy, and it doesn't help that at least to me, Finn's character in TLJ felt like character regression just to get that lesson in there. And I like Rey, but her character just feels a little too safe, if that makes sense. She DOES go through a lot, but I mean more about the idea of having a woman who's white is easier to market than having a black man be a lead in a star wars movie, cause if you know Disney, China.
    The ending is another issue where it should've ended with Kylo has taken over the first order, the battle on the salt planet was intense but pacing wise it felt like it dragged on like the Return of the King. But Luke made it all the more worth it and I can buy him using the force that way to be more defensive and less aggressive and it does work for the ending, though with Luke's character being what he is...well I can't say much since that is REALLY subjective. Many like you can see that working because of how many people would change overtime and feel the hopelessness of reality, whereas others would find it troublesome with his character, even when Luke did hesitate about killing Ben, it would be like if Billy Batson considered killing his relative if he was already too far gone with the evils of the 7 sins, sure Billy would still hesitate and restrain himself, but for some people, just seeing a character they see as a beacon of hope and a the image of a relatable hero would be too much for a lot of people. But again, subjective, and I feel like there IS no concrete answer because there will be those who want their hero be who he is, and those who wand dirty deconstruction in a time when most people want to escape from reality. And that story arc is a damn good one with a great moral, but with how Luke was used for it was definitely an issue that has people split down the middle.
    But ultimately its just the pacing for me, parts I liked kept me interested, other times I literally fell asleep in the theaters twice, and I went to see the movie with moving seats. So in case if you couldn't tell by my LONG comment box, I'm a rare one in the middle when it comes to this film. There are parts I didn't like, but I wouldn't say its an awful movie. And there are parts I did like, but I'm sorry this ain't no masterpiece. Either way this whole back and forth from people who praised it, defend it, criticized it, deconstruct it, and attack each other just left me with Last Jedi burnout. I don't even hate the movie but its not likely I'd go back to it often cause either way I'd get torn apart from both sides of this spectrum. And I thought Man of Steel was really divisive. Feel free to mock me if you want since I don't love the Last Jedi like you do.
    And if someone asks "why comment on it then?" Like most people would, to get it out of their system, I'm just someone who is casual with star wars and is frustrated that I can't have a decent conversation about it without turning into a pissing match when it doesn't really matter.

    • @Fizggig
      @Fizggig 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      jack adam I thought return was good. I like the ewoks and it was a good ending to the original trilogy. Revenge of the Sith had good parts but it still had that whole politics and Yoda jumping around like a mad man. Rogue One is an amazing film in general the acting was on point and I really enjoyed that ending.

    • @jackadam9348
      @jackadam9348 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rogue one is a good all around War movie set in the star wars universe. Without that last 10 minute, it really doesn't stick with many of the Star Wars fan. As a war film, it showed the emotion of rebellion. However, as a Star Wars film, it lacks that Star Wars Fantasy feel with the exception of the Vader scene.
      Empire was such a rebel of a movie where it goes all over the place, but return of the Jedi played safe. My problem is not with Ewok and such, but lack of momentum after Empire build up. I watch the original trilogy one after another on VHS with like a day in between because I use to rent VHS tape. After Empire set the tone of the star wars, I was eager to get back into star wars. But Return of the Jedi left me feeling like they did something very family friendly instead of War, emotion, and conflict.
      Revenge of the Sith brought conflict and emotion (which lacked in the first 2 prequel). Padme and Anakin scene are as awkward as ever, but it does make some sense in context of the whole conflict. It has that Star Wars fantasy of knights over throwing emperor just to be betrayed by of one their own. Revenge set A tone of hopelessness through out the movie, which is a perfect lead into the OT "a new Hope". I am Ok with yoda light saber fight.
      I understand your point of view and I am not trying to convince you of anything, just my opinions for a good afternoon youtube conversation lol.

    59:14 As I haven't watched the movie in english yet I thought that it was just a nod to the german dub of the original trilogy made by the localization team. If memory serves me right Ben Kenobi called the lightsaber a "Laserschwert" (laser sword) back then. There were a lot of those things in the german dub especially in episode IV (like Millennium Falcon = "Rasender Falke" (dashing or racing falcon))

    I agree with a lot of these analyses of the complaints.
    However, there was one OOC Luke moment that bothered me.
    He thought about killing his unarmed nephew in his sleep long enough to ignite his lightsaber. I have a hard time buying that, as this was the guy who thought Darth Vader could be saved and Darth Vader was only related to one of his two best friends.

      Here's the comment I left on another video regarding this. Remember that Luke panicked for a split second and had no intention of following through:
      Remember that Luke glimpsed his future. The one that resulted in an entire star system, with billions of lives, being snuffed out in an instant, Luke's Jedi Order destroyed, the rise of the First Order, the fall of the Republic and his nephew at the center of it all.
      I think he can be forgiven for panicking for a moment.

    I think the real attraction Disney will borrow from TLJ is that all drinks in Galaxy's Edge will be served by milking animatronic aliens.

  • @SonofMrPeanut
    @SonofMrPeanut 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's why I think they're keeping Star Tours even after Galaxy's Edge opens:
    They're serious about the whole "immersion" thing, and the proof of that comes with all the merch being "in-universe." They'll likely also want to produce more traditional tourist merch, so the only solution I can see is Galaxy's Edge t-shirts and the like going in Star Trader. Too, there's no guarantee that Batuu is even concerned with what's going on in whatever upcoming movie Disney is plugging, and Star Tours is the best means of doing that (and leading you directly to a gift shop).

  • @SonofMrPeanut
