  • Some Jerk With A Camera kicks off a new sub-series of One Movie Later, "Escape From Tomorrow Done Right (Or At Least Less Wrong)," about indie films that shoot at least partially on location at theme parks. First up, Jerk and friends discuss Sean Baker's critically-acclaimed slice-of-life dramedy The Florida Project!
DISCLAIMER: This video, like every video on this channel, is intended only for mature audiences. While the topic at hand is a form of media commonly associated with small children, the purpose of this video is to present a mixture of analysis and comedy about said media from a distinctly adult perspective, which may possibly include profane language and references to sex, drugs and/or violence. TH-cam, like many websites, collects personal data on its users. The Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) has made it illegal to collect personal data on children younger than 13, and rather than fix their own algorithm, TH-cam is essentially threatening to pass the blame onto content creators whose work may seem "attractive" to children. For these reasons, the producers of this video feel compelled to state, in no uncertain terms, that if you allow a child under 13 years old to watch this TH-cam channel, you are a bad parent or guardian.

The first time my family went to Disney World, we missed an exit and ended up in Kissimmee. We pulled into a convenience store parking lot and we went in to ask for directions. The lady at the counter began telling us how to get there, but then immediately stopped and tried selling us timeshares and we were like, "Oh no, thanks. We're not interested." And then she just KEPT going on about how beneficial a timeshare could be and my mom, who was exhausted, then was like, "LOOK LADY WE'VE BEEN IN THE CAR FOR 12 HOURS!! I DONT WANT A GODDAMN TIMESHARE. I WANT TO SEE MICKEY MOUSE, ALRIGHT???" Then the lady whipped out this weird Kissimmee branded map on how to get to Disney from that very convenience store and we got the heck out of there.

I know I'm very late to the party but after watching this film for the second time I think the most heartbreaking scene was the hotel restaurant scene, while the daughter is completely oblivious to the situation that she is about to be in the middle of, the mother knew full well what was about to happen and she wanted to have one more happy moment with her daughter before she may never see again.

Wow this movie really is like the perfect juxtaposition to "Escape from Tomorrow."
Instead of being only black & white it's over-saturated with color.
Instead of escaping FROM tomorrow, they escape TO tomorrow.
AND it's actually a really good movie instead of a steaming turd!

    • @maxleunig4072

And instead of a frustrated middle-aged man being the main character, it's a happy, precocious six-year old girl. And instead of being set in Disney World, it's set outside in Kissimee. And instead of a psychological horror, it's a slice-of-life drama. And instead of showing how Disney World can be hell for adults, it can be possibly devastating to kids as well. And instead of a hotel cleanup guy, Willem Dafoe is a motel manager, seriously you can make a million antithesis comparisons between these movies. Do you think Sean Baker actually watched Escape from Tomorrow and said, "I'm going to make the exact opposite!!!!!"

I was just able to see this, because it finally opened in Michigan, and my thoughts on the ending are that Disney world was an escape. Moonee never needed to escape before, because she was always perfectly happy with her situation and life. But at that moment, where everything she's presumably ever known is taken away from her, she needs to get away. She needs to go as far away from tacky gift shops and apartments pretending to be hotels as she can. and the most far-removed place she knows is Disney, even though it's actually geographically very close.

Saw this film on Friday. It was a fantastic human comedy and social commentary at the same time. You had to feel for these kids and their parents at some level. And the idea that Disney World represents the happy place juxtaposed with Mooney acknowledging Jacey is her best friend is a great thematic ending.

You know what I think helps keeps a lot of these places like those shops on 192 in business? The fact that there is no supermarket on Disney property.
some hotels do have "general stores", but their selections are rather limited and the prices a bit much. So you're stuck going out into "the wilds" of Central Florida to stock up on supplies, especially for the return trip home if you're driving and you've got more than a day's travel ahead of you.

I think in general this is a hard film for Hollywood to accept. they don't want to accept the fact that it could compete with big budget studio projects as a no budget indie. they dont want to accept the fact that it successfully broke the traditional 3 act structure that is there bread and butter. they dont want to accept the fact that they an unknown was able to preform on the same level as actors they pay 5-20 million a film for. and most of all they dont like having to take a head on look at the realism of everyday poverty in America. it is unacceptable to be racist, sexist, or homophobic amongst liberal elites or Hollywood elites or whatever and that's why movies like "moonlight" "the Dallas buyers club" or "12 years a slave" (all great movies btw) did so well at that Oscars but this movie not only didn't do well, it wasn't even nominated (besides William for best supporting actor) for anything so that it could even not do well. classism and snubbing your nose at poor people is not just a republican thing and Democrats are not as progressive and willing to address the poverty issue as people make em out to be. that's just my theory though, doesn't mean its true.

    • @Spiderman-wt8hb

Honesty the film is very much the opposite of this one. It represents the side of childhood where one can feel under spoken and frankly defenseless. Almost every thing that the kids have to go through, scary or not, is representative of that. The adults are either indifferent or obstacles and the bully's are pushed forward to the extreme in how they treat other kids, but also knowing that they too have been effected by these problems too. It's not perfect, it's tone is jarring at points and some aspects are a bit overbearing. It works well though because it tries a lot to show kids that you can relate too very well and having scenes of just them being kids in short conversations or playing around. It's probably not your thing since you don't like horror, I'm just giving a suggestion since it came up in my mind about films like this about kids and the society around them. Looking forward to whatever project you work on next.

  • @ByakuyaOfTheDreams

I really have to thank you for this review Tony. I saw The Florida Project recently and was left frustrated by it. I didn't like the characters, and I felt Moonie and the other children were just being presented as innocent and precocious and the film didn't have anything new to say about childhood beyond that. But your analysis of the film's ending and Moonie's character, particularly your point Disney World being a homogenous escape from reality for most children, and now that Moonie has lost her home, she'll have to rely on it too, and that destruction of her imagination and freedom being devastating is an insightful point that really makes the film more poignant and unique that I originally gave it credit for. I still don't know if I can say I like the film since I didn't enjoy watching it, but now I can see what it had to say and how novel a take on the relationship between Disney World and childhood the film makes, and with that in mind I really appreciate it a whole lot more.
It really is a shame it wasn't nominated for more awards at the Oscars. Best Picture aside, Brooklyn Prince really should've been nominated for Best Actress for her role as Moonie for that gut-punch of that crying scene alone.
