Finally a video of someone that didnt just win the lotto and buy all of the fancy turning tools. Just starting out this is awesome. Well done!
Thank you so much! I hope it helped 👍
@@davidnilius Haha! Right on!
Good job, Luie! There are always more than one way to get something done. I love your ingenuity! I've done similar in my 50 years of woodworking and it's always very satisfying to solve a problem with little cash outlay. I'm sure this video will help a lot of people. 😊
Phil
Thanks Phil,
We do what we can with what we have😊👍😎
Great job of using what is available on hand. Keep up the great work Louie.
Thank you so much 😊
A very convenient device for sharpening!
Thank you so much on a budget, you have to do what you can
Great info, Luie. I got the one way system as a gift and it just made me realize you don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy stuff. Consistency is the key and you have that covered. 👍🏻
Thank you so much buddy 👍😊
Thanks so much man. You are so calm, humble and down to earth. I am just starting out and have already spent so much money on the lathe, chucks, grips, tools and a grinder. I just can't afford to spend more in the sharpening jigs and platform. I hope I can make my own just like you. Cheers buddy.
@@PetefoggyTurner Hello,
I truly enjoy working on my lathe and I hope you will find as much pleasure as I do.
I truly appreciate you watching and commenting
Thank you,
Love the fact you made your own sharpening tool rest. I am big on up cycling. Very informative. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you…..for watching and commenting 👍😊😎
Good job Luie! Yeah, i dont have several hundred in my budget for a fancy setup either. As long as something works, it dont have to be expensive!
Thanks for stopping by and commenting on this video I appreciate you 👍😊
Thank you, Luie. Take care.
Thank you so much 😊
What a great idea! Thanks!
Thanks! when your broke you find a way
Great video Luie! Free is my favorite price to pay. I'm currently using a harbor freight 4 x 36 belt sander as my lathe sharpening system. It's my poor man's ProEdge. 😃
Greatest comes from necessity 🤣
Thanks for commenting 👍
This is exactly what I was looking for. I am on a fixed budget & cannot afford expensive tools. Thank you
@@chrispark3758 so glad that it was able to help you👍
Thank you Luie. I was hoping you would make this video. I to work with a small budget at times. Hopefully I will have a fancy sharpening station some time in the future, but will make do in the meantime.
You are welcome I hope this helps 👍😊
I like that you made what it takes to do the job. And it seems to do a fine job. It seems half of my fun in the shop is to make jigs and things to help in the process.
I recognized the logo but did a double take on the new channel name.
Thanks for making this video I know it will help a lot of people that just are not sure what is needed for setting up a grinding station.
Gary
Thanks Gary,
I changed the name to match my Etsy shop.
Hopefully it doesn’t affect my rating on TH-cam
Nice jig!
@@keystonekreative2174 Thank you

Good info. I see you have done a channel name change. Good to have the channel name match the Etsy shop name. 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Yeah I will mention the name change in my next video, I hope it doesn’t affect my rating 👍😎
@@spindlesworkshop9744 Old name very distinctive and unusual. New name more generic, but still good identifier. Will the Brit guys now start calling you “Spindles” when they don’t remember what first name goes with the channel name? 🤣🤣🤣

This is freaking brilliant. THANK YOU.
Thank you so much 😊
I bought an 1890s watchmakers lathe to make viola pegs and your video is the first one I've seen about lathe tool sharpening. Straight forward, honest explanation of how to get at a perfect edge on my similar budget. I've paid $700 for viola fittings from artisans in Europe and finally thought why not just make them. Problem is, the lathe brought $700 on eBay 😃. I will get one of those Mohawk wheels. Thanks for your help 🍻.
So glad this was helpful

Well thought out ,luv it and thanks for sharing this idea
@@prem9918 thank you!
Very well done vid there Spindles👍😁 One thing to be careful of is getting the tool too low on the wheel where it can get jammed and cause serious problems. I get leery when the cutting edge goes below 45° (7-8 minutes on a clock). It's a combo of the tool length, the cutting angle, the wheel diameter, and how hard you push down. Keep 'em coming Luie👍 Take care. -Mike
Yes your right
You can not go below that quarter of the wheel👍💪😎
Nice job Louie, and it goes to show that we don't have to spend hard earned money to make something cheaply instead of buying an expensive factory made jobby that does exactly the same thing.
Cheers, Bram .Ps nearly had me there with the name change lol
Thanks buddy 👍
I changed the name to match my Etsy shop. Hope it doesn’t affect my rating 🤔

This is why I love watching your videos so much Luie. The solutions with a low or even no budget. After all, we can only spend our money once. Good solution and good tips. (New channel name, I was a bit confused for a moment 😊)

This is great!! Just started and this has been quite the expensive therapy to get set up to say the least! But all money saved is so appreciated. Do you know anything about lung and eye protection? Goggles ✅ Respirator ✅ Turned half project last night and today the whole garage has a thin layer of dust over everything. I use to be the one cutting the wood not working with it. You fell the tree you take everything off after until you cut your next. Thanks for doing what u do!

Luie!! How have I only just realised that you changed the name of your channel! It all makes sense now - I am playing catch up here! Ha! Claire,
I just changed the name to match my Etsy shop. I plan on mentioning it in my next video.

Well done. You seem to be a humble plain talk guy with good knowledge and talent. I'm just starting off with lathe work and have learned how quickly the tools dull down, following your lead and will copy your setup. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
I appreciate that and hope you check out some of my other videos.
I plan on starting up new videos in the new year.

Thank you for making this video, I’ve been searching all week!
I’m trying to get into turning, with a cheap used Harbor Freight lathe but didn’t want to spend another pile of money trying to keep things sharp.
I’m so glad you were able to get something out of this
I appreciate your comment 👍
Nice setup in your shop. Thanks for showing us. Take care.
Thanks 😊 I appreciate you stopping by and commenting 👍
Man what an awesome setup. Really looking forward to setting this up in my shop now. I find that I end up making more jigs and stuff like this than actual projects, but it's exactly what will be needed to restore my grandpa's old lathe tools. Thanks for posting this.
I will add a small disclaimer for anyone that using a fine grinding wheel will make the tool heat up faster than a course wheel. Might be prudent to have a little jar of water nearby to keep your steel from overheating and losing temper (so I've heard anyway.)
Hello,
Thanks for your support 👍
If you are regrinding the angle I agree you can’t let the steel heat up.
But if you are just putting an edge on it you should be fine (hope that makes sense)
This video came with perfect timing for me. I have been using carbide tools exclusively because of the cost of sharpening tools on the market. I will be setting one like yours up very soon. I also sent you a sticker today. Keep it up and be safe.
That’s great I’m glad it helped you out😊👍

Thank you. It has certainly helped me. Also on a budget.
Thank you for your kind words👍
I’m glad you were able to get something out of it 😎
I think we all work within our budgets. I started about the same and funding was a available for me to expand to nicer tools. Looking back... I spent too much. LOL
My day is coming 👍😁
Great Jig. Has the same rulles as the expensive set ups. I would watch for heat and have some water close by. A slow speed grinder would help. Look for a secondhand DC motor from a tread mill. A cheap speed controler from the net and you have it all together.
Thanks for the tips!
Great idea Luie Keep up the great work Louie.
Thank you so much 😊
Great video Luie! Cool new channel name Brother 👍
Thank you so much 😊
I need to design a new opening
Great idea. I love to see people use their imagination to solve problems on a budget. I was recently given a lathe and have been practicing but sharpening has been my issue. Thanks for the solution. I was thinking about using my drill press and a homemade jig as a low speed grinder. What do you think?
I’m not sure what you’re thinking
But I’m sure you can figure it out if you put your mind to it 👍👍
