  • Learn to sharpen your woodturning tools
    Do you struggle to get sharp, properly shaped tools when you sharpen? You’re not alone, most woodturners do. Having sharp tools is critical to overall success, ease of cutting, and increased enjoyment.
    In this video, Kirk DeHeer will take you step-by-step through the process of shaping and sharpening tools so that your tools cut cleaner, leave a better finish, and reduce the time needed for sanding. All without the frustration and reduced tool life that comes with free-hand sharpening. He will also show you how to re-shape your tools to the correct profile with a simple trick or two.
    In our Dale L. Nish Workshop program, we teach students how to create perfectly ground tools using the Oneway Wolverine Sharpening System with Vari-Grind jig in combination with Raptor Set-Up Tools. Together, they offer woodturners simplicity, repeatability, and superior results overall. When you’re done watching this video, you’ll know how to properly sharpen your tools so they are razor-sharp and ready to help you reach your full potential as a woodturner.

    Finally .. your's is the only video to talk about setting the control leg and where the leg needs to be in relationship to the notches. Been looking at video's for hours and not one of them go into this. Nor is it detailed in the Wolverine manual that comes with the tool. Thanks for filling in the missing details.

    My Wolverine platform is powder coated on the top worksurface, not bare metal as seen in the video. Is it best to lap/polish the platform down to bare metal?

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA
      @CraftSuppliesUSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some platforms can be a little "sticky" depending on the brand - we've found that a lapped/polished surface allows you to have a more fluid motion when sharpening skews and scrapers.

    How have I ever sharpen my woodturning tools for close to 45 years without having throughout that knowledge until now! I'm going with what my father had taught me! Gee! Could you write me the manual angle setting red jig ? I would really appreciate it and will review all your sharpening ways now. I've learned the angles with experience and over the years some mens on several occasions would bring their tools and tested me for différent angles for different tools. They would bet my dad would bed high. On friday nights my dad would take me to the old A&W and get my medium milkshake root beer floaters. The waitresses on their roller blades. So thank to the trip nostalgia. Please tell mr that tool that you skew the tool in and you set the angle you want to sharpen the tool. Thankfully Sylvie

    How do you determine that your tool is sharp?

    • @HPCthulhu2011
      @HPCthulhu2011 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to sharpen at the primary bevel angle but it has to be sharpened all the way to the very tip of the blade.
