    This is fantastic. I am considering taking up woodturning and was concerned by not knowing how things can go wrong. But you show exactly how the catches occur and how to use the tools safely to avoid getting them into that situation.

    This probably had the opposite intended effect on me. Now I am absolutely terrified at trying wood turning.
    Main reason that it seems to be very small margins of error.
    Cant you run the lathe slower? Seems it will cut at hand turned speed anyway.

    • @wcndave
      @wcndave 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      gamingSlasher Imagine though this had happened when you started, and you had no idea it could happen, you'd need a new pair of trousers, and would wonder what you'd done wrong, start thinking you were lucky to have all your fingers, think you'd wasted all your money etc... at least watching this you know what could happen, that it happens to everyone, and that with a skew, it's fairly safe. I've been turning occasionally as part of my general woodworking hobby, for about 5 years, and I get catches all the time. They make you jump, and they wreck the work piece, but they're part and parcel of the hobby. Watching videos like this helps me understand and reduce them. The speed of the lathe here makes little difference. Hang in there!

      as one who have been wood turning as an hobby without this knowledge. this looks for a bit more advanced turners. since I have seen few that cuts in that angel. for starters I did just have it straight 0°. making is very hard for it to cut Inn to the wood. and having it on lowest rpm. it's not that scary as you think. and being caution on what can happen will make it so you won't loose those fingers.(sorry shirty English) good luck

      I totally understand what you're saying it does terrify the crap out of me also. But as long as we have respect for the tools always remember safety and educate ourselves then we will have better woodworking experiences. I do cuts on the table saw and let me tell you there is no room for error when working with those kinds of machines they are unforgiving.

  • @tedspens
    @tedspens 5 ปีที่แล้ว +108

    I overcame my fear of catches by running my lathe at it's slowest speed. That got rid of the anxiety factor and allowed me to focus on what the cutting edge of the tool was doing. As I got more comfortable, I turned up the speed a little and practiced more, and continued doing that until I was comfortable at normal turning speeds. I did this with the skew, bowl gouges, spindle gouges, scrapers... basically every tool that is prone to catching. This is also a great way to learn how to use the tools, not only to avoid catches.

    Excellent video. I'm currently looking to purchase a fairly basic lathe to see how I like wood turning and this is one of the best videos i've seen for explaining how and why catches occur. I have to admit though, the first catch you showed on the video made me jump slightly. haha.
    Most videos out there typically explain how to use the tool properly, but don't go into how and why a screw up happens. But I guess most people aren't confident enough to intentionally catch a gouge for a demonstration. So hats off to you!

      LBCAndrew my husband started with a bolt and a nut and a cordless drill than bought a 40$ Craigslist tile saw old school with 3/4 horse motor belt driven the saw blade spindle had a 5/8 nut on it he took a 5/8 drill chuck and spun it on used that for a month. With a lot of freehand cussing and trying to make a rest out of scrap wood bricks and a lot of c clamps he bought a 70 year old running shop smith and is now teaching me if you love it start with the same start making a few rings with a nut a bolt and cordless drill and for faster results add a angle grinder with flap disk lol but try to make some simple ring and if you keep trying to be better on purpose than chances are you got the bug

    Question: You address the angle of the bevel, but I'm having trouble with two other angles now that I've got a skew chisel. One is the angle of the tool on the toolrest. You don't keep it flat on the toolrest, but rather rotate it slightly so that only the bottom edge is on the toolrest? How does this figure into catches?
    The second angle is that of the two hands. Bringing the right hand further out will change which part of the tool is doing the cutting. How does THAT affect catches?

    I'm new to this sport. Thank you for explaining the physics of why it catches. I now have an understanding of what I am doing and why.
    Best video I have seen explaining the basics of wood turning.

    I just put new bearings in an old Craftsman wood lathe. I ran a 3/8 stud all the way thru to tie in the work. Now I'm going to run in REVERSE with tool upside down and see if I can eliminate tool catches.

    I know this is an old video, but franly, this was one of the hardest videos for me to watch in a long long time, I was practically jumping out of my chair watching those catches. I have done wood turning since I was a teenager back in the 90's in high school and I don't recall ever getting a catch so that shows how lucky the stupid can be.

    I love this guy! No matter what level this is a good video. Just getting started back to turning after four years and badly needed these lessons!

    Learning so much from this video. Would love to see some of these things in hi-speed slow motion... call the slomo guys?

    This is an excellent video! It makes me just as freaked out as making all these mistakes on my own lathe (by accident) does, but hopefully it'll help me avoid them. Then again, the more videos I watch the worse I seem to get!

    I didn't know this was dangerous. All the pro videos on YT to classical music make it look easy and pleasant.

    Very helpful for us beginners. Thank you for the instruction. Could you do a video demonstrating how the various tools are to be properly used?

    I can't seem to figure out why my chisel keeps catching when doing the inside of a bowl... any solutions?

    • @RichardRaffanwoodturning
      @RichardRaffanwoodturning 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A tool will always catch when the wood descends on an unsupported portion of an edge. You should be using a gouge inside a bowl, not a chisel.

      @@RichardRaffanwoodturning Sorry, I meant Gouge. But thank you!

    Hes not kidding with gouges and cutting bowls, still have a gouge stuck it the ceiling left it there after it caught an flipped straight up and stuck in the drywall, its there to remind me not to do it the wrong way ever again.

    I am half way through this video and have already learned quite a bit. I have been doing lathe work for about a year or so now and in 5 minutes you have explained several things that I have been doing incorrectly with catches. Thank you. I have subscribed and look forward to more of your videos.

    I'm just getting into wood turning and I found this very useful. I never really thought through before how the tool was in contact with the wood and the rest, and how that could result in catches like this. Thanks.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a couple of your books, but there is nothing like a video to get the full concept. I know how to use skew, but your explanation on why it catches makes sense.
