I’m literally in my bathroom floor after my latest bout with “air vomiting”, and I’m just crying… I thought I was alone. I’ve had this since I was a baby. My mom and dad even recall how horrible my inability to burp was for them. I match every symptom. I’ve never heard of this, and I’ve literally had doctors giggle at me about this problem.. thank you so, so much. I’ve got to make some calls ASAP.

It has affected me for so many years, i tried everything- going to the doctors, scans, endoscopy, life style changes, diet changes, stopped smoking, exercising, physiotherapy, yoga, aroma therapy, deep tissue massage.. everything and the annoying thing is doctors sont know the cause of your symptom and cant understand your pains. Like i have searched through every digestive problem and i find that the symptoms dont match,i almost gave up but i kept searching until finally i put the luckiest words 'no burping' and i'm here. This condition is what my entire youtube channel started from in 2008 (known as gurglez), to raise awareness and find others like myself (without even knowing what it was or what was happening). There were no videos or posts or reddit threads back then about this. I found one forum a few years in, but that's it. This video is such a HUGE step for people looking for answers. This is AMAZING. Thank you so much for creating this video Dr. Bastian and team. It means so much. "So full of air that they just can't breathe"
I took a leisurely walk with a friend a few days ago and I just could not breathe. I even went out and got tested for Covid, just in case. It lasted a few days, but I've been to the ER because of the sheer amount of air trapped in my chest (caused by one wine cooler) pressing on my heart made it go into tachycardia and I thought I was having a heart attack. My friends would always joke that I had frogs living in my chest, groaning and croaking. I've had R-CPD for all of my 36 years and I am crying to finally have a name. I cannot WAIT to see you, Dr. Bastian, and have this procedure done.

Dr. Bastian, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Every single symptom- the big 4 and the other non-universal symptoms- I have experienced for the last 20+ years (I am 27). I first noticed symptoms in early childhood. Much like Julie, I have searched for others and tried to explain it to friends/doctors and no one understands the physical pain and mental/social stressors this has put on me. I am not being hyperbolic when I say you LITERALLY described my life to me- every symptom- and now that I know there is a treatment, I will be getting that as soon as humanly possible.
Thank you thank you thank you! You are someone who cares- you are a godsend!

@Josh Keen Hey Josh! My condition remains the same but there are things that I do in daily life that prevent symptoms. I've learnt them myself over the years. I'm a student and work casual so this year has been tough getting around to do much of anything. Getting it properly dealt with and seeking treatment will be a feat in its own, but still on the front of my mind though. The things I do to ease symptoms are never eating and drinking fluids at the same time (or soups/ramen), waiting half an hour between. Never eating and go walking or a lot of physical movement straight after. Don't drink soft drink. They stop the pain and sick/fake burp/bubble feeling. The bloating is always an issue- if I eat anything I get bloated. That is one thing I cant change.

If I do either of those things for too long, this happens. It was the worst when I was in marching band in high school and played for competitions 😅 I had multiple experiences where I almost threw up and wasn’t hungry until the next day

My whole life I've dealt with all these symptoms and not until very recently did I realize that I had an actual condition, and more importantly, one that can be cured. When I tell people I can't burp they are confused but kind of just see it as a quirky thing. But in reality, it is a huge pain that I and many have to deal with all the time. I used to be on the heavier side but have since corrected my lifestyle both in terms of diet and exercise. Even with my now athletic build I still get bloated throughout the day, and by evenings I look almost pregnant in a way. Of course the next morning my stomach is back to normal and I look fine. This is especially frustrating as the bloating forces me to wear baggier clothes if I know that a t-shirt or tighter fitting top will show my bloating. When I go out for drinks or to a party, I have to be conscious of both how much and what I am drinking, as too much will make me vomit or be very uncomfortable due to the build-up of gas that has no way out except for through vomiting. I am tired of dealing with this. No one besides those with R-CPD really understand just how bad it gets. I am booking an appointment with my doctor to discuss my symptoms and the condition I am almost certain I have. I fear though that like many others, I will be brushed off and prescribed another remedy that won't fix the main issue I have, which is the inability to burp. I also live in Canada and don't know how readily available the procedure is here, especially with the Covid-19 pandemic still ongoing. Maybe if anyone in Canada who has either gotten the procedure or is looking into it could give me any information or advice, it would be very much appreciated. Also to Dr. Bastian, I'm beyond happy that you are bringing attention to this condition and doing your part in helping those with it to live normal lives.

I am a RN. I have had this issue since I was an infant. My grandmother said she would try to burp me for hours but It would not help. I'm 25 now, still having the gurgling, extreme bloating and flatulence, and I have to gag myself after large meals to let the air out. I can't drink carbonated drinks, I hate to let them go flat. My heart rate will increase to the 140's at highest sometimes because I have so much air in my stomach and chest, which causes tremendous pain and in turn, anxiety. I have had drs say, "we will get your burping" but ever address the issue. Maybe showing this video to my gastroenterologist will change something. I am so bloated constantly, and it hurts a lot. I hope and pray we all get relief!!!

So glad you found this avenue of exploration. A comment: Often all GI symptoms end up being related to the R-CPD. That includes in many cases, constipation (due to overstretched colon walls) and diarrhea (an irritative response to excess air). So R-CPD could co-exist with UC or Crohn's but it certainly can cause lower GI issues all by itself.

I cant hear it but it has bothered me my whole life and is the main symptom I want to rid. That sound is the bane of my existence and will hear it sometimes through the echo of my microphone on xbox and it really shuts down my confidence.I try to stop it but I literally can’t. I thought I was literally just crazy because doctors said everything seems fine. I made the connection on my own that the gurgling sound lack of burp and the sharp pains due to a build up of gas were connected. @@Musicallison Thanks for your response, I believe those may be parts of a larger issue. I've had a few abdominal surgeries due to the chronic chest pain (originally thought to be a Hiatal Hernia). I had a fundoplication and fundoplication takedown due to it failing. It's fedinitely aerophagia, bit debilitating. Chest pain is so severe I can't leave my house anymore or even stand for longer than 10 minutes without it becoming excruciating. I also talked to a doctor out in LA who studies supragastric belching and he agreed that it sounds more like an anatomical issue. None of my tests show anything wrong anatomically.

    • @Musicallison
      @Musicallison 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CodyLawrence Woah I'm so sorry to hear about all of that! There really isn't enough research in this field and you're a perfect example of why even a non-fatal disorder like R-CPD needs more attention. Otherwise, (and again, I'm absolutely not a doctor) I would have to guess that you might have multiple anatomical issues? I can't imagine that aerophagia alone would cause you to have so much pressure in your chest since you have the ability to burp and release trapped air. Going off of that logic though, here's an article I found that lists a couple of possibilities: www.health.com/condition/gerd/9-serious-conditions-that-can-feel-like-heartburn Although as a last idea, maybe you could also be excessively swallowing air like how aerophagia typically works but the air could be getting trapped in an unusual location where burping can't reach? My first inclination from that would be a tear in your esophagus but I'm sure there's other conditions that are capable of redirecting excessive air intake.

Dr Bastian, I know its a long shot that you will read this but I feel like you are my last hope to answers. I have this condition (R- CPD) I have met with ENT doctors, GI doctors and even one who specializes in this disorder. However, I was told I am not a candidate for botox and this is why... My lower esophageal spincter doesnt work properly either and is patulent. This causes reflux and the ENT doctor believes my Upper esophageal spincter remains tightly closed as a defense mechanism to prevent aspiration of reflux into my lungs. However, I am also not a candidate for surgery to tighten my LES and potentially rid myself of both conditions because apparently mannometry tests show I have yet another condition called Ineffective esophageal motility. I just had an upper GI with biopsy to rule out eosinophillic esophagitis which I dont have. It is unclear what caused all these issues and I feel defeated and sad that I may have to live the rest of my life like this with no relief. The reflux I can deal with but the symptoms related to no burp majorly suck and ruin my social life. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated?

Do you mind sending this message to info@laryngopedia.com? Dr. Bastian will see it there and likely reply to you. You must find a way to get your R-CPD treated…Ineffective motility and LES laxity are almost predictable RESULTS of R-CPD!

I am that can hear the gurgling from the other side of the room, stick my finger down my throat to let out an enormous amount of gas. I need this botox injection, my doctors know nothing about this.

I just started this as a result of panic attacks. I’m a pharmacist and both my colleagues and doctor blamed it on acid reflux. I knew it wasn’t acid reflux because I didn’t have any acid at all. But that was the only thing that made sense . The worst is the build up of the air in the chest cavity which makes you feel like your chest is going to explode. I have been suffering on and off for the past month. What I did was use some Lipton tea wit a lot of lemon. I squeezed the lemon into the hot tea and placed the remaining lemon in the tea. It relieved it after hours of the air being trapped in my both my stomach and chest. I still plan on going to ENT and maybe I’m wrong but this definitely describes what I have been experiencing.

So sorry to hear of your experience. The key determinant of whether you have R-CPD is whether you can burp Most people have had difficulty for as long as they can remember, but there is a small subset in whom it is acquired later in life.

I'm speechless. I also thought I was alone.
I've got all the symptoms, this has been going on all my life, but seems it's getting worst (I'm 60). Possibly because I am doing more sports.
It's not on a daily basis but mostly because I avoid most situations, but I often still live the social awkwardness.
    - I will never drink fuzzy drinks (soda or beer)
    - I will eat very slowly, and very small bites (people find that funny).
    - avoid family dinners where you eat and talk
    - on a long day hike, I will avoid eating lunch or take a couple small bites (otherwise I'm not making to the end of the day)
So on a normal day I am kind of ok. But then I like to run. Above a certain distance (about 10km) it becomes a misery as I become full of air with shortness of breath.
I did mountain trekking (up to 7000m of altitude) up to recently, but always at the cost of many 'air-vomiting' stops. Guides always think I am experiencing severe sickness altitude syndrome, but in fact I tolerate the lack of oxygen pretty well, as long as my stomach is emtpy.
At the end of the family meal, I will always have to go lay down (horizontal position is such a relief). Normally by 2-3 am I am back at normal 'pressure'.
There's absolutely no way a that 'walk around the block' after a meal would make me feel better.
I cannot understand either how drinking a Perrier with bubbles would make anybody feel better after a large meal!
I also often get severe and painful hiccups, sometimes unable to drive back home unless I stop to air-vomit.
After a 3 times usually it has no more effect and doesn't help with the hiccup.
The only symptom that I also have that is not mentioned here (or in the other articles) is the fact that sometimes if I eat certain things (mostly a sandwich with thick french bread), I will get like a 'esophagus cramp', the food seems stuck in my throat, I am unable to breath at all, I become silent, unable to move, with big pain in the esophagus, usually it takes about 30 seconds before the 'bite' finally goes through. My mother probably had this, she was diagnosed with a 'hiatal hernia', but as she was old (70s) she refused to get surgery. Reading about this I find some of the symptoms contradictory with R-CPD.
It's not the first time I research with my symptoms, I once found a group of people in France having similar issues but most said that their doctors simply discarded their descriptions and didn't take them seriously. I never consulted because I figured it would need to be at a time where I had the symptoms.
I will obviously see if here in Canada doctors have started to hear more about this conditions and possible solutions.

You have just described R-CPD perfectly. We have treated many patients from Canada, because they could not find prompt help there. But I do know that Dr. Amanda Hu in Vancouver, and Dr. Jennifer Anderson in Toronto know about this disorder from my work.

I have R-CPD and in my country this is not recognized as a disease. I can't get operation. I have severe gurgling daily. Around 30 times a day. Also I have excessive flatulence. What can I do to fix this? I don't have any money to travel abroad to get my operation. I feel hopeless and I don't know what to do.
