Love this idea. Before Planechase we had a similar format called Planeswalker where we’d just use a deck of magic cards that were global effects. Still have one, great for multiplayer fun.
I played a 7 or 8 player planechase game about a week ago just for the novelty of it, it was exactly as chaotic and confusing as you would think. 10/10, if you can convince some of the other people at your lgs to go in for it I totally recommend
This is a good deal value wise IF SEALED, 45 dollar precon sealed where i live, plus 2 6 dollar packs, and commander masters a pack is 18 bucks online. So you got a HELL of a steal
That's Costco for ya. They gotta make the box look big because especially at that store, big boxes are what drives eyeballs. Wait until you see how they package gift cards.
Well the point is XMAS presents, so when it's wrapped and under a tree it looks bigger which makes the kids more excited. That's and it makes THEFT that much more stressful in attempting
Costco also sells gift cards i.e. a 1.5 x 2.5 inch piece of plastic packaged on a 12 x 5 inch piece of cardboard in a giant cardboard display box, all for something you could probably purchase directly from the company's website and have emailed to the recipient
Bloomburrow got me back to Magic due to the Artwork. I play still my Angel/Spirit Commander Deck but I actually buy Bloomburrow Boosters just to be able to build eiter a Bat/Rat or Lizard Deck.
Hey Seth. I enjoyed this video when it came out. I just picked up the Sauron Commander deck with 2 packs of Lord of Rings in one box when I was at Costco this weekend.
I’d say it’s only really worth it if ya find that knight tribal commander deck, like the one shown in the video. Anything else and I’d say NO, it’s not worth it. Outside of the knight commander deck, the other decks were badly designed and weren’t too fun to play with.
Even that one isnt really worth a lot it's just scarce which is jacking up the price. This is before they actually started putting effort into making the landbase decent
@@xeper9458 Yeah Cavalry Charge saw a spike when a lot of reviewers were ranking it #1 prcon of 2022. I got into Commander in 2023, so when I was looking for a starting point I was getting pointed toward that one a lot but the price on it was like double all of the others so I ended up with both of the Phyrexia decks to start. :)
Just got one today and pulled a Cyclonic Rift, Bloodchief Ascension and Ashnod's Altar on the Commander Masters booster so I guess I didn't do that bad ;)
The march of the machines Ixalan coin treatment is cool if you know the history behind it. The artist that made the art is the royal mint engraver who designed a bunch of medals and UK currency. Give it to MTG fans to not know much outside of goblins and elves ;)
Got decent pulls from my boosters out of the bundles from Costco. I pulled a Finale of Devastation and a Smothering Tithes plus some other playable pulls. I grabbed the Cavalry Charge & Call for Backup decks. Just played them this evening. First games of commander I’ve played with physical cards and not MTGO hahaha
Planechase not planeshift…..and the dice is specifically for planechase. The die alone is $5+ since they only have a few precons where they are included. Same thing in yugioh too; legendary duelist packs had special dragon dice and i have 8 of them sealed and they are $10 each.
Got the Sidar precon when it came out, changed out like 10 cards and the obligatory lands and that thing f*cking slaps in higher power casual games... Unbeaten in 1v1 against the, really annoying, Edgar Markov deck my buddy plays btw. Many decks are not ready to handle a flying first striker that draws and insantly reanimates another nice knight in turn 3-4. The package overall seems like a good deal for once, normally the big box store bundles are full of random crap to clear the storage. The decks are around 25-35, 17 for the CM set booster and let's say another easy 6-10 for the other stuff.
Do note costco packaging HAS to be that large. Although...all things considered, I'm QUITE sure there will be more than a few opened boxes around the store to be found, where they sell them at. Lord knows I've seen pokemon promo sets as well in the last couple of years.
This is probably the best product for a player looking to start playing commander. Good price point, extra packs to "upgrade" the deck maybe or just get that crack a pack itch out of the way. Would recommend to parents that have kids wanting to start playing the game, someone wanting to get back into the game, or a player already wanting to get the deck. Keep in mind this was around the same price range as when they originally released
Found the LOTR precons for $55. came with 4 promos and 2 packs. Seemed like a great deal for someone getting back into the game. I picked up all 4 decks!
Would be fun to watch a commander game where each person opens one of the Costco packages and can change out the cards from their precon commander deck with cards they open in the boosters.
wish my country had deals like this. its neat as a gift (either for a friend or to treat yourself) comes with excitement, the promos are foil which i think is neat even if they arent worth anything, and jace fits the colors of this specific deck so you could be excited to try to modify the deck right away. i really like this =D
Did you check to see if the packs are resealed? Because i would bet money that those packs are picked through for money cards and then resealed with bulk rares.
for like 50 bucks and you get a commander masters pack? def worth it in my eyes after i googled how much each pack was going and if i wanted to buy this shit separately. plus for me those cheap promos i didn't have but now i do ;)
I actually found a Sidar deck at a discount store for 20 bucks so when I saw these I was excited but also hoping for some other kind of Precon , are any of the other decks good ?
It’s a great deal on a commanders precon with the planechase cards and dice. The price will jump down and up for a few years like Edgar markov precon or the ur dragon is expensive now. Best to keep the deck for a paneschase deck with some in the commander deck gets a bonus in the format
Seth, you should try to get the rest of the crew to play a commander plane Chase game for a video, I've done it with my playgroup and it's actually like ridiculously fun!
I live in Kentucky and my local Walmart hasn't had much as far as magic lately because of those groups who get together and buy everything out and leave nothing for anyone else. But regardless of that. They did have a couple of commander pre cons bloomborrow and I think a Outlaws at thunder junction. And they wanted like $65 for those. So this bundle is a steal compared to those.
I bought the Angel convoke commander specifically for the Nesting Dovehawk. It helped that the commander is Jeskai cuz I broke down that precon for Zinnia
Absolutely insane that the current pricing on Cardmarket for both promos is just over 10 dollars if you wanted the originals. Or just pay 50 cents for resale promos. Junk Wax era incoming.
I wouldn’t quite agree that promo cards don’t hold value, just that promo reprints don’t. One of my favorite planeswalkers ever (tezzeret, master of the bridge) was exclusively a buy-a-box promo and up until they reprinted it in the recent bloomburrow secret lair it hadn’t really lost any value, hovering around $25. The original art is still $15-$17 even after the reprint.
I was able to snag the Cavalry Charge precon bundle a few weeks ago from there…even got a few neat pulls out of those packs. I hope Costco continues to sell MTG!
The backside on battles needs to be better for them to be worth it. Losing - wont be able to flip it Winning - you can flip it, but its winmore at that point, and because the backside is underwhelming, is it even worth putting time into flipping it instead of just winning? Tied - this is where flipping could be possible and worth it, but if you're taking time off from attacking your opponent, you're falling behind. The payoff needs to be good enough to be a solid threat and leapfrog you ahead. I think they tried to balance them based on mana cost, like, "they already paid a somewhat fair rate for the front side, we need to make the backside just okay". But the front side is rarely a great option compared to similar effects, and you'll rarely try to flip it without the backside being quite good, so at that point you're just playing a bad card. If they're going to be playable at all, the backside needs to threaten to win the game for it to be worth it to play a below average frontside and then put in the effort to flip.
I am only just now returning after stopping magic back in the early 2000s... what's up with that card from mirage?! Is that an actual genuine reprint? Does it have something that distinguishes it from the original? Would a collector stick that in the mirage folder?

They're already up on the website, $59.99 each.

That’s luck! The rollick and sol ring go in the precon well, too.

An epic amount of cardboard for a small amount of more valuable (hopefully) cardboard 😂😂
I pulled a Demonic Tutor from the Commander Masters pack. I wasn't planning on buying any Magic cards that day, was there for milk and chicken.
It was for me. Those boosters ended up with way more value than what I paid for the box.
I just snooped the Canadian Costco site, they are also selling all four Fallout Commander decks as a bundle for $220 CAD.
Such a wasteful packaging
