Double dyed saucer - How to dye wood

  • Welcome back!
In this video I decided to just chuck up a blank of maple wood that was lying around and show you how to dye wood. I could tell this piece had some figure to it through the bark. I didn't have a idea for this one, just a lets see where this goes. Ended up having some beautiful figure in the grain. So, I decided to give it a double dye. Went with red and black from Keda Dye and it came out better than was imagined.
Yes it was way off balance and I should have trimmed more off with the chainsaw. But I trust this lathe and it was much quicker and safer than trying to cut something that small with a chainsaw in cylinder form. But always do practice safe methods! #woodturning #wooddye #woodbowl

Love the black under the red. I like using dyes and layering them but haven’t done it in a while. You’ve got a great result. I’m inspired! 😊

Thanks! Give it a go! I’ve seen some awesome outcomes with black as a base or fading two different colors.

I like the effect that you get when sanding away a color like around 8:00. But the red is spectacular.
    Great job!

It’s on my list to do one just black. I keep saying I will one day but always find myself throwing another color on lol

Hi Epps, when I run into cracks I often use the clear CA glue and then add some color such copper. One lady customer thought that was a fun idea, she bought 6 of my bowls and will probably buy more when I recover from surgery. Just thought I'd share that. Nice work.

I’ve done that with another piece of black walnut. Ended up matching up very very nice!

Curly silver maple is a close second to burl wood to me. Those curls just beg for dye!

A beautiful result. I can't help but wonder jow it would have looked if you'd centered on the limb and made a single wing bowl out of it. Good job.

Love how the color came out on the piece. How do you mix your dye? I would like to try some. Thanks.

I use water or alcohol. Water allows it to penetrate deeper while alcohol allows it to flash off faster and not go so deep. Just kinda depends on the wood and how it absorbs.

A good piece but please, leave the music out. It's such a distraction.

Yea I’m working on leaving it out.
