    Very nice. I just bought some Artisan dyes and have been watching a number of 'how to videos'. You are the only person putting a finish on before the dye. Why do you think the finishing step is necessary. Does it not stop the dye penetrating.

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thank you! The finishing is not necessary, but can make a huge difference depending on the wood. Ash wood, has soft and hard wood grains and by adding a finish like shellac evens out the dye, so you don’t have some darker areas. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

      @mikeyandalyssab4782 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, I wouldn't put on the friction polish until after they dye has been added. The shellac will create a barrier and limit the dye or limit the clean look in my opinion.

    I remember the old days, when my chuck looked as new and spotless as your ;) Love the blue dye, simply nice deep color, but I wouldn't think you should dye after applying the polish, I would think it blocks the way to the grain... but then again, if it's spirit base, I guess it melts the shellac... correct me if I'm wrong? Love the overall effect, well done!

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good eye, my chuck is fairly new (Nova infinity). I do keep it lubed with WD 40 to help the jaws from sticking, but I'm like that with all my new tools. However, after some time passes, I'm sure my Chuck will have all sorts of materials stuck to it.
      The polish I use is basically oil/shellac and the dye also has 5% shellac in it. So, basically I end-up with dye, shellac, and a top coat of lacquer with a little bit of colored wax in the pores. The alcohol just thins the shellac and then evaporates. I have not seen any issues with doing it this way. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it.

    What kind of friction polish do you use? Great result.

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I appreciate it. The friction polish is a home brew. I mix equal parts of boiled linseed oil, dewaxed shellac, and denatured alcohol. I store it in a mason jar so the alcohol does not evaporate. You can use this polish as a sanding sealer as well.

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul Emmerson hi, I'm not sure where you are in the world, but in the U.K. you can use methylated spirits. I believe some people in Canada use Everclear from a liquor store, which I believe is 200 proof (95% alcohol/5%water). I try to stay away from water on wood. Ether way they are flammable and toxic to drink, stay safe. Lol if you just want a base coat over a color, you can use shellac. hope that helps. Thank you and thanks for watching.

    can u use butcher block over that dye ??

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      mike pruett hi, I have never tried that, but my first thought is ,”no.” Butcher block is basically bees wax and mineral oil. The mineral
      Oil is what concerns me, as it is an oil that does not harden. This type of oil would most likely mix and or bring up the dye. Thanks for watching and hope that helps.

    Looks good but looks like a waste to use so much silver just to wipe it off

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you sir. I know what you mean about the silver, but this stuff lasts forever and goes a long way. I've been using that same silver can for years and will most likely use it for many to come. The shelf life is decades, seriously. If it gets a little dry I just add a tiny bit of denatured alcohol. I'm not sure about other brands, but this type is great, highly recommend. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers!
