      Thanks Paul. I was surprised by how much impact the yellow dye had on the overall look of the piece.

    Nice this is a excellent explanation of how to dye. As a side note, love how when you said "obscure" the camera blurred slightly.

    very interesting finishing process. Also great tip on alcohol dyes and shellac. Obvious when you think about it - but I never do.

    That was awesome, thanks very much Jack! I'm working on a ribbed bench and I'll do exactly as you did. If I can get my ribs to look like your handle, I have a great piece! Take care! Mark

    That’s a beautiful handle. I’d like to make my own one day when I get a chance. Your dye process looks great and I’ll have to try that polishing compound and past wax technique. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

      The polishing compound is great for getting nice high gloss finish. Thanks!

    It came out looking really great! Does the final wax make a huge difference after the polish? By the time you added the shellac is was looking amazing. I enjoyed these tips.

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Eloy. Sometimes the wax does make a noticeable difference. Any wax is easy to use on the lathe, but I am looking for something that is easier to use on flat work. I've heard good things about General Finish Liquid wax and plan to try it sometime soon. generalfinishes.com/wood-finishes-retail/maintenance-polishes-and-waxes/satin-finishing-wax

    What liquid did you use to mix the Transtint dye with? Their info gives numerous possibilities, including water, isopropyl alcohol, denatured alcohol, lacquer thinner, shellac, etc. I need some guidance on which I should use.

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually use regular tap water, but distilled is preferred. If I am concerned about grain raising then I will use denatured alcohol.

    Thanks for the finishing tips, Charlie! I think we know why you didn't look up to the camera - you were admiring your work - and there's nothing to fault for that!
    Tell Jack Bench "Hi" for me. Even though he's not on camera, I'm sure he's am important part of the show. Maybe he runs the camera, or maybe he's a producer, or what ever... but tell him "Hi" for me. ;)

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HAHAHA, I will definitely let "Jack" know that you were thinking of him. Actually, I like that idea so much that I might introduce "Jack" on one of my videos!

    I enjoyed the video! I haven't had the best luck with dyes yet. I'm thinking of using trans tint dye in denatured alcohol and then brushing on a water-basted poly so I don't lift the color much.

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply, I'm glad you liked the video! I think that water a water based topcoat could dissolve some of the dye because Transtint is soluble in both alcohol and water. I usually seal the color in with a thin coat of an oil based finish when I am concerned that the topcoat might "lift" the dye coloring.

    How can you dye veneer? I run into the problem that it doesn’t fully dye into the veneer just the outside

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dying veneer completely through is an involved process and I've never attempted it. However, dyed veneer is available from certainlywood.com and other vendors.

    Was your base just warm water ? and what was the ratio of transtint to the base ? [Great Video]

    • @JackbenchWoodworking
      @JackbenchWoodworking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Yes, warm water for the base. I honestly don't remember the exact ratio, but I've found that a strong mix usually works better.

    Great looking finish but I have a question. I was looking for the Antique Cherry dye that you started with but can't find it on TransTints color chart. I did find an Antique Red Walnut but it looks more brown that the color you were using. Can you give me an item # for that dye? Thanks. Also, anyone interested in buying any of these dyes should go to the manufacturer's website at homesteadfinishingproducts.com/transtint-liquid-dyes/. He has an eBay store that is selling them for about $10 less than on Amazon.

      @JackbenchWoodworking  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Charley, The antique cherry red is a powder dye. It's also sold by homesteadfinishing and is available at their ebay store: www.ebay.com/itm/TransFast-Water-Soluble-Dye-1-oz-container-ANTIQUE-CHERRY-RED-3265/263997463734?epid=1579218028&hash=item3d77799cb6:g:BKsAAOxyRhBSq0iq
