Very pleasing shape and the way the stain was taken up is interesting. The wood is amazing. Take care wearing your ring when you work, if a step or knot catches the stone it can make a mess. Thanks for sharing your talent.

Still revisiting all your previous videos (you have a bunch!). This one really caught my eye. First is the grain. I swear it appears to run in 2 directions. I just stared... I haven't seen anything that defined before! That AAA was definitely a AAA!
As for the color, I'm 50/50 on coloring. When you started coloring this AAA I yelled at the TV! I'm glad you started over. That looks more like a watermelon than a watermelon looks like a watermelon (if you followed that, congrats!). It worked well and didn't kill the grain, just gave a different perspective. Since I'm here, you've used black and white miliput on a couple of pieces from a while ago. I thought the mix of black and white on those looked amazing! It has almost a lace effect. Your best miliput use so far, in my opinion. I'm going to try for that effect soon. Beautiful embellishment!

Just finished turning a bowl out of the figured maple also purchased at Rockler. I prefer the natural color of the wood. I very much liked the interior of the bowl. Not to crazy with the color on the outside of the bowl.

Nice job! I have the same lathe and I'll just share my experience with coring systems, since you mentioned an interest.
I started with the McNaughton and got some horrible catches. As I was analyzing the problem, I noticed the tip of the cutter would flex 1/4" below center with hand pressure. I thought it was the knife flexing that much, but was surprised to see it was the banjo on my 18/36! The body of the banjo would twist away from the bedways and the cam lock bar became bent from the catches.
I swallowed my pride and bought the Oneway Easy Core. It is so much easier to use, I wish I got that in the first place!!!
Good luck with whatever system you choose and keep turnin'!

I think you color schemes are really cool. What a beautiful grain on that piece of wood.
FYI...an easy way to find center on round, square or whatever. take your compass and guesstimate the center of the wood, take the point and touch the edge of the piece then drew a small curve in center. Place the point on opposite side (edge) and draw another curve. adjust the compass to hit the middle of the 2 curves. Do the same thing on the other 2 opposite sides. Where the 4 lines intersect will be your center...Easy Peasy!!! Hope that explanation came thru 0K.

My only experience of highly figured maple has been laquered guitar tops. The 3D effects can be startling.
This is a beautiful piece of timber. I would have preferred to see more of the natural colour of the maple but then I tend to use TruOil finishes on guitar bodies and necks.
What a shame to waste all that gorgeous maple when following out the centre...gotta get that bowl saver!
I really like your commentary, great to know what the various passes are intended to achieve. Thx for posting

Loved the color selection you chose for the bowl and the exterior shape. Then I watched you hollow out the inside and it looked like you stopped the depth about half way in before sanding. Was this an optical illusion?

    • @PFWoodturning
      @PFWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks, Derek. Must have been an illusion. I sanded the inside once it was hollowed. Might not have filmed it all....not sure.

Make it easier on yourself and tool by starting forming the bottom first, as you are going to cut away your perfectly rounded edge anyway. Speed up the process too.

I was challenged and inspired by your coloring approach. I think that aspect of finishing is your strong suit. You didn’t sand enough (at least on the outside) as concentric tool marks were clearly visible at the close-up. Too bad. Push cuts would have given you a much smoother, more even result than the smoothing cuts (scraping) you were shown doing (outside). As a fellow Mainer, I encourage you to perfect your craft; we have a long history of excellence and artistry. Best wishes.

You asked for feedback. I have a channel but I took the videos down 7 years ago. I did firearms restoration. I was working 7 days a week & I just couldn't keep it up. Now I am a "consumer" of youtube. What I would recommend is to put in the low volume royalty free music in the background. You have to do narration because of the noisy environment, and you also have some long pauses. I have found that the music in the background is a good filler and adds to the video quality.

Peggy I love the way you start on the outside of the bowl to get it balanced first, I've been turning wood for a long time as a hobby. My lathe is worn out and currently have a Grizzly G0766 on the way. I used water-based paints and wipe them off with a wet rag to get the colors I wanted, your coloring is good, and I learn a lot of new things from you-tube, always learning something new ! I was blown away whenever I watched this video ( th-cam.com/video/XrMJ6tyjh-s/w-d-xo.html ) I think the trick is to let the die dry, watch it and let me know what you think .

    love your video
but the way you hold your hands when sharpening needs to change. your lead hand should be below the jig. if the tool catches your hand will go down. if you hand is above the jig, guiding it from the tightening lug, you fingers will fall into the wheel with the tool if there is a slip off the wheel or a catch.
the two bloodiest accidents i have heard about so far are both from sharpening. with two fingers gone.
get safe. get that hand below the jig and learn to control it from there.

Please, humor an old man, record the sound the tool is making when you’re working the wood. The sound a lathe and the piece of work make is just as important as your dialog. (Pontificating)
